Sorry, Bro (#4.16)

Warning: Spoilers
So here we get to see one of Ted's ex's. Portrayed by Laura Prepon who was a perfect choice since she made a great job being that pretentious ex of Ted's whom Marshall and Lily don't like for very obvious reasons. We get to hear the story until the very end of the episode where it takes a twist and we see that instead of having a revenge, Ted is actually seeing her again. Wonder what it will be like in the next episode.

And Marshall forgetting his pants at home was just an adorable story! This is so Marshall! I just can't believe Lily would trust Barney in such a situation, but I am glad she did as those cute shorts he made were even better for the story.

A good episode ruined by the ending

Warning: Spoilers
"Sorry, Bro" is an episode that can be considered disposable in entertainment. It sure is fun, ultimately inconsequential to the overall season arc, and is worth the watch.

Ted's story-line was the dominant plot in this episode, and to be fair, it is the weaker story-line. The line 'Sorry, bro' makes for a nice recurring gag during the episode but the story itself is perhaps a little dry, especially when we flashback to 1998.

I mostly enjoyed Marshall's no pants story, which just goes to show how sick (and awesome!) Barney can be. It was an entertaining part of the episode, and I also enjoyed how Lily at no point was amused with Barney's shenanigans. The general sitcom trope would be all the characters laughing at the victim's misfortune, but Lily stays true to Marshall. Good little piece of character work.

After Ted mans up to Karen after he finds out that she already has a boyfriend, he chastises her insecurity and her lack of commitment to the one she is with (in this case, the other boyfriend) and storms out. Ted has grown, and he explicitly states this to Karen, and the group. However, the episode has to end with a joke and it turns out that he has been in contact with Karen since she dumped the other guy.

Sitcoms are notorious for doing this. Dismissing character development to generate some cheap humour. Utterly irritating, weakens a fairly good episode.

An Entertaining Episode

Plot In A Paragraph: While Ted, Barney, Marshall and Lily have a beer at the bar at 2am, Robin, who drops by the bar, has just woken up to start her new job at the morning show which airs live at 4am. Barney is relaying a story about Marshall at work that day, he who was getting dressed for work after a basketball game at the company gym when he realised that he forgot to bring his suit pants, meaning that he had to go to work wearing his athletic shorts. Barney hilariously plays a hand at what Marshall ultimately wore for the rest of the work day. And Ted is telling the gang that his old girlfriend Karen is in town. Karen was Ted's first real girlfriend in college. She was pretentious and often cheated on Ted, which are the main reasons that Marshall and Lily hate her. But Ted always took her back when she came running. As Marshall and Lily try to persuade Ted not to fall into the same trap he always has with Karen.
