Emma Heming Willis has shared that “it’s hard to know” if her husband, action star Bruce Willis, is aware of his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis.
“Dementia is hard,” Heming Willis said on “Today” as part of the first TV interview she has given since her husband’s diagnosis. “It’s hard on the person diagnosed, it’s also hard on the family. And that is no different for Bruce, or myself, or our girls. When they say this is a family disease, it really is.”
Heming Willis went on to say the diagnosis has been “the blessing and the curse,” adding that their family now has a better understanding of what Bruce Willis is going through. “It doesn’t make it any less painful, but… just being in the know of what is happening to Bruce makes it a little easier,” she said.

A couple weeks ago, we learned that a new take on Red Sonja had gone into production – after spending decades in development hell – with Matilda Lutz (Revenge) in the title role. Deadline reports that Lutz is joined in the cast by Oliver Trevena, who has experience wielding a sword thanks to his role in the 2019 film The Rising Hawk. Trevena is taking on the role of Tr’aal, “a gladiator-type warrior who joins Sonja in her fight against an evil emperor”.
M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) is directing Red Sonja from a screenplay by Joey Soloway (Transparent) and Tasha Huo (Netflix’s Tomb Raider anime). This version of Red Sonja is derived from the sword and sorcery comic books by Dynamite Entertainment, based on the character created by Robert E. Howard and adapted by Roy Thomas. The last of Bruce Willis’ films continue to trickle out, and the most recent one to come our way is Wrong Place, which reunites Willis with music supervisor turned director Mike Burns and writer Bill Lawrence, the team responsible for Out of Death. I won’t blame you if you give up on it after reading that.

The family of Bruce Willis announced Wednesday that the actor is stepping away from acting after being diagnosed with the cognitive disorder aphasia, but new reporting suggests that Willis’ health decline was affecting his work on the set of recent films.
In January of 2020 on the set of the film “Hard Kill,” actress Lala Kent told the Los Angeles Times that Willis twice missed his cue to fire a gun. The actress said she asked the film’s director, Matt Eskandari, to remind Willis to say his line before firing the gun, but on two takes Willis fired the gun before delivering the line, taking the actress by surprise. “Because my back was to him, I wasn’t aware of what was happening behind me. But the first time, it was like, ‘No big deal, let’s reset,’” she said.

Several of Bruce Willis’ recent directors spoke to the Los Angeles Times about the concerns they felt while working with the actor in the years leading up to Wednesday’s announcement that Willis has aphasia and is stepping away from his acting career. Aphasia is a language disorder caused by brain damage that affects a person’s ability to communicate. The directors witnessed the effects of Willis losing his mental acuity, which often resulted in the actor being unable to remember his dialogue. Mike Burns, who directed Willis in “Out of Death,” said he was asked to reduce the actor’s speaking parts in his film.
“It looks like we need to knock down Bruce’s page count by about five pages,” Burns wrote in a June 2020 email, obtained by the Times, to his film’s screenwriter. “We also need to abbreviate his dialogue a bit so that there are no monologues,...

Willis has announced he’s to retire from acting following an aphasia diagnosis. How we will miss new work from a man who brought such wry humility to mainstream cinema – and reinvented the vest
The news of Bruce Willis’s retirement on health grounds brings its own special kind of sadness. Admittedly, he has been booking some dodgy films in the last year or so – I recently sat through a pretty sorry action thriller called Out of Death with Bruce in his comfort zone as the retired cop who has to take on a terrifying situation.
But even there, Willis’s coolly amiable, faintly contemptuous, always battle-ready presence sprinkled a little much-needed vinegar in the blandness. And so often in so many different kinds of film, Bruce Willis has been the wild card – or, actually, the trump card.

Diana the Musical, the much-mocked telling of the life story of Diana, Princess of Wales, has swept the board at this year’s Razzie Awards.
Complete winners list below.
The stage show, of which a filmed version was shown on Netflix, won five awards at this year’s Golden Raspberries, including worst picture, worst actress for Jeanna de Waal in the title role, worst director, worst supporting actress and worst screenplay. It had been nominated in nine categories altogether.
Netlix streamed a filmed version of the stage show before it debuted on Broadway, without a live audience due to theaters being closed at a time of coronavirus restrictions. When the theatrical show eventually opened, it lasted for only 33 performances on Broadway before the curtain fell for the final time.

Results for the 42nd Razzie Awards are in — and if you had anything to do with “Diana: The Musical,” you might want to go back to bed.
The big, fat Broadway bomb about the Princess of Wales beamed into your living room courtesy of Netflix was this year’s big Razzie “winner,” taking home five of what the group calls its “un-coveted … tacky, gold-spray-painted statuettes.”
The streaming version of the stage musical bagged Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Jeanna de Waal), Worst Supporting Actress, Worst Director (Christopher Ashley) and Worst Screenplay. The group pointed out how richly the “Diana” script deserved the honor for “featuring some of the year’s most ridiculed dialogue and lyrics — Including rhyming ‘Camilla’ with both ‘Manila’ and ‘Godzilla.'”

Yippee-ki-yay, Bruce Willis sure has a lot to celebrate the day before the 2022 Academy Award nominees are announced.

Leading the 2022 Razzie Awards nominations roster is the Netflix version of the Broadway flop “Diana: The Musical” with nine bids. Tied with five apiece are “Karen” and “The Woman in the Window.” Each of these ill-conceived movies counts a Worst Picture nomination among its haul. Tied with five apiece are “Karen” and “The Woman in the Window.” Each of these ill-conceived movies counts a Worst Picture nomination among its haul. Joining them in that race are the sequel “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and the sci-fi flick “Infinite.”

The Razzie Awards nominations recognizing the worst “crap streaming, beaming and steaming from our various screens and devices” of 2021 — as the group put it — have been announced, with LeBron James, “Diana: The Musical,” Amy Adams and Bruce Willis topping the heap.
“Here’s a look at what we saw,” the organization said in a press release. “The excruciating musicals, thrill-free thriller rip-offs, a nearly 2 hour product placement flick, and more Bruce Willis than any starving viewer could stomach. In other words, 2021 did not fail the Razzies!”
With Oscar nominations coming out on Tuesday morning, the Academy Award’s snarky counterpart, the Golden Raspberry Awards (aka the Razzies) followed suit as they do every year at this time acknowledging the superior work – or, actually, the inferior work – coming out of the entertainment industry.

Midnight in the Switchgrass presented me with a bit of a dilemma. After Cosmic Sin and Out of Death you can imagine the last thing I wanted to watch was another Bruce Willis film. But Megan Fox had impressed me in Till Death which made me want to see it. That and the fact it claimed to have a budget of $15,000,000 which should buy some decent production values convinced me to watch it.
Karl Helter (Bruce Willis; Die Hard) and Rebecca Lombardi (Megan Fox; Transformers) are FBI agents trying to crack a human trafficking ring. Things become complicated when they find that their case may be related to another investigation. Byron Crawford has been tracking the serial murderer who would become known as “The Truck Stop Killer” for years. But his...

I guess anyone who enjoys action thrillers has already seen Out Of Death at least a dozen times over.
It is, after all, every American’s worst nightmare. You just happen to be out hiking a trail in some conveniently out of the way location – if the banjo accompaniment is anything to go by, this might well be Deliverance territory – when you stumble across some bad people doing bad things.
In this case, the lone hiker is a young woman and photojournalist by name of Shannon, out hiking on some spiritual voyage of reconnection to her deceased father. Also, to scatter his ashes. The baddies? Well, they just happen to be pretty much the entirety of the local police department under the leadership of corrupt sheriff Hank Rivers (Michael Sirow).
One of their number, Billie Jean (Lala Kent), is out to conclude a drug deal with a fairly obvious ne’erdowell.

In a week that saw three theatrical releases debut on Premium VOD, “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate/$19.99) won the battle. The ensemble action comedy sequel took first place on all four charts we follow, despite competition from “The Forever Purge” (Universal/$19.99) and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” (Warner Bros./$19.99).
Meanwhile, “Black Widow” (Disney/$29.99) announced an all-digital platform release for August 10. The unusual aspect is it will be offered as a digital download rather than a rental, with extras including additional scenes and bloopers.
More significantly, “Hitman’s” displaced “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount/$19.99) after just one week as top film. That’s a bit of a surprise; John Krasinski’s hit grossed as much as “Purge,” Conjuring,” and “Hitman’s” combined, and “Hitman’s” grossed the least with $37 million.
That also may mean that the “Hitman’s” audience wasn’t as thoroughly tapped. The audience demo...

“A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount/$19.99) is best overall among VOD rankings this week, but it’s not unanimous. After initially leading after its July 13 iTunes release (always the quickest daily chart to reflect new releases), it dropped to #2. Instead, “Wrath of Man” (United Artists/$5.99) returned to the top, a position it already held for most of June. iTunes, like GooglePlay, ranks by number of transactions; after weeks at $19.99, “Wrath” reduced its price and rebounded.
John Krasinski’s smash sequel also was available on Paramount+. Did that have an impact? Only Paramount knows. Another point of interest: In its VOD debut, $19.99 meant a digital purchase of “Quiet” — not just a 48-hour rental. Electronic sell-throughs usually happen only after a rental-only option.
Apart from its iTunes #1, “Wrath” otherwise scored three second placements on other charts, highlighting consistency between those ranking by sales and transactions. “Nobody” (Universal/$5.99) and “Godzilla vs. Kong” (Warner Bros.

Out of Death is the latest Emmett/Furla production, a company who seem to be following the Pm Entertainment model of churning out action movie after action movie, with actors who are either long-term mid-carders or, like Willis, are in the twilight of their career. I’m not complaining. There was, for quite some time, a distinct lack of mid-budget original action movie fare made in the US. Of course there are the many Dtv franchises that Universal 1440 put out: Behind Enemy Lines, The Marine, Death Race, Sniper, etc. but not much by way of original storytelling. Emmett/Furla obviously saw the same gap in the market are thankfully filling that hole… With varying degrees of success may I add. But they’re still filling a...

After swatting back the Covid-19 scourge to some extent, Puerto Rico opened its ports in June 2020. With the year-long curfew lifted in May this year, it’s been business as usual on this Caribbean island of roughly 3,500 square miles.
The capital of San Juan held its first live audience concert on June 26, 2021 with salsa icon Gilberto Santa Rosa playing to thousands at the Puerto Rico Convention Center for the first time since the pandemic closed it down. According to Asm Global regional manager Jorge Perez, 15 other concerts have been announced, with 10 already sold out.
International acts are also coming in as most U.S. mainland venues remain closed. Plunging cases and a relatively high vaccination rate (up to 70%) has brought some semblance of normality and a growing number of location shoots to the U.S. territory, albeit with health and safety protocols still in place.

"Shannon - you can trust me. What we need is evidence." Vertical Ent. has released the first official trailer for yet another small town crime thriller called Out of Death, the directorial debut of a music supervisor named Mike Burns. Yet another "Bruce Willis looks so terrible in this, why does he keep making bad films" project for everyone to guffaw at. A corrupt Sheriff's department in a rural mountain town comes undone when an unintended witness throws a wrench into their shady operation. Determined to help her at any cost, Jack must tap into his killer instincts to survive the wilderness and the human predators within it. This stars Bruce Willis, Jaime King, Lala Kent, Kelly Greyson, Tyler Jon Olson, and Michael Sirow. Oh yeah it looks as bad as it sounds; the only highlight is Jaime King delivering the only good performance. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Mike Burns' Out of Death,...

Exclusive: Jack Huston has stepped in to play the male lead in Wash Me in the River, joining Robert De Niro and John Malkovich in the Randall Emmett-directed action drama.
Taylor Kitsch exited the role, this after agreeing to replace Colson “Machine Gun Kelly” Baker. The action-thriller is in the vein of No Country for Old Men. Huston will play a recovering addict who goes Man on Fire toward every drug dealer he thinks might have played a role in his fiancée’s death. Two cops are hot on his trail. Huston had a celebrated turn as an assassin in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
Emmett/Furla Film’s Emmett, George Furla, and Tim Sullivan will produce. The company has been prolific during a Covid-19 moment where indies have been hard pressed because of the lack of coronavirus insurance. Eff restarted and finished production on Midnight in the Switchgrass,...

With the second wave of Covid-19 crushing hopes of an imminent strong and global restart for the entertainment industry, the resilience of the independent movie business will be tested during AFM’s virtual edition.
The first major market to unfold since the virtual Cannes Marché du Film in June, the AFM was expected to host the launch of a flood of new product, but many companies are now planning to hold back some of their projects for early next year due to the volatile climate brought on by the pandemic.
As cameras are still not rolling everywhere, sellers and buyers won’t board projects unless they have a firm production start date, so more than ever this year, the AFM will showcase finished product, and movies that are either filming or are in post. Initially regarded by many industry players as a one-off global meltdown earlier this year, the coronavirus...
