This Star Trek article contains minor spoilers for Lower Decks Season 2, Episode 6.
Tasha Yar deserved better. When the oil slick creature known as Armus killed off Tasha in The Next Generation episode “Skin of Evil,” the fandom let out a collective groan. As its first season wrapped up, Tng was already down one fantastic character and the franchise wouldn’t get another female head-of-security on a regular basis until Nhan appeared in Star Trek: Discovery, 31 years later. But, like some kind of self-aware rogue A.I., the canon of Star Trek itself seems to want justice for Tasha Yar. The latest example comes from the coda of the Lower Decks episode, “The Spy Humongous,” further proving that, decades later, Trek canon is still looking to avenge Tasha Yar. Here’s how the hilarious Lower Decks Easter egg went down…

This week’s episode of Star Trek: Discovery paid homage to two of the franchise’s much-missed stars. “Unification III” was mostly a kind of sequel to classic Next Generation two-parter “Unification,” with Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) discovering that her brother Spock’s dream of unifying the Vulcan and Romulan peoples was ultimately fulfilled. Leonard Nimoy even appeared via a touching use of archival footage.
Besides Nimoy, though, the episode also found room to offer the perfect tribute to Anton Yelchin, who played Pavel Chekov in the three reboot movies. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 27, just before the release of Star Trek Beyond. Discovery has now given him the highest sign of respect that a Trek actor could ask for, though, as he’s had a Federation ship named after him, the U.S.S. Yelchin. Not only that, but the ship is also of key importance to the ongoing storyline.

It’s Spock time! In “Unification III,” Star Trek: Discovery has continued a story that The Next Generation began in 1991. And, in doing so, the series has created an episode of Trek that is both nostalgic as hell and also forward-facing and new. Back before we even knew what Discovery would be like, we were told Michael Burnham was Spock’s adoptive sister. And now, Spock’s sister has come home!
From Tng vibes to sweet nods to the reboot films, to a lot of references to Spock, here’s all the Easter eggs and shout-outs we caught in Star Trek: Discovery, Season 3, Episode 7, “Unification III.”
New Starfleet Logo on USS Discovery
During the opening moments of the episode, we see that a newer, more rounded Starfleet insignia adorns the shuttle bay of the Discovery. This feels commensurate with the...

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains Major spoilers for “Unification III,” and spoilers for Picard.
Michael Burnham has returned to her home planet Vulcan in an attempt to recover some data from a Vulcan and Romulan alliance she never thought was even possible. If this sounds like the beginning of an epic title crawl in a Star Wars movie, you’re not far off. In Discovery Season 3, Episode 7, “Unification III,” the Trek franchise has delivered one of its most epic and generation-spanning episodes in a very long time. We always knew Star Trek: Discovery’s status as both a prequel and a sequel to Tos and Tng was tricky, but for fans everywhere, it was hard to believe these time-jumping tricks could ever result in an episode this heartfelt and straight-up cool.
And yet, if the USS Discovery’s visit to the planet Ni’Var had you scratching your head,...
