The slave auction in which Kunte Kinte was purchased took place on Oct 7. A few scenes later Ames comments that Kunte has been with them four months and is still in chains. This would mean it is February. In a later scene Kunte asks Fiddler what snow is. Between Feb and Oct he would've already seen snow.
