Timothy Dalton appears here as Rochester. The decade before, he also made an appearance as Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights (1970). Both were written by Bronte sisters: Charlotte ("Jane") and Emily ("Wuthering"). Dalton's two characters are considered to be comparable to each other within their prospective novels.
Rochester teases Jane by referring to her being in association with the "men in green." The idea is he's saying she was a little fairy sprite that enchanted his horse and made him fall when they encountered each other in the woods earlier. Jane was not intimidated by him, and simply joined his pretense that fairies were real in her conversation. Rochester is secretly impressed that he has met his match in Jane Eyre.
