I'm Quite Adept on the High-Wire

Hey Bones Booth!

I have to be honest, I'm not a massive fan of the undercover episodes. The Woman in the Sand is the only one that doesn't give me intense secondhand embarrassment. I know that's the point but sometimes it's just too much to handle and makes it difficult to watch.

However, this episode isn't too bad in that regard.

As always the silliness and heavy-handedness of it all was very much appreciated, and completely fit the tone they were going for. It would've been just wrong for them to investigate a case to do with the circus without going undercover. As a couple. And perform a Russian knife-throwing act.

It was great to get a tiny bit more of Sweets' background since we haven't heard much about his past as of yet. This gets expanded upon in future episodes but all the information we get right now is that he was adopted and his biological mother worked at a carnival.

It was lovely to see more of Vincent and get to hear more of his random not-so-pertinent factoids.

Brennan's outfit as Natasha... insane. I refuse to believe she slept in it that last night in the trailer/mobile home but the more scenes with her wearing it, the better.

Cam asking B&B to livestream their performance for everyone back at the Jeffersonian was hilarious and again added to how bonkers this episode was as a whole.

Overall, a pretty decent episode, but not one of my favourites, despite how iconic some parts are. 8/10.

Just for Fun

Totally unbelievable episode. The skeletons of two girls, conjoined, is found in the desert between Texas and Oklahoma. A bit of checking reveals that they were circus performers. What does one do? Booth and Brennan decide to join the circus and investigate from the inside. They need an act and so they become Russian knife throwers (well, Booth is the thrower). From here it goes too well. Booth turns out to be a masterful thrower and wows the crowd with his skill, while Tempe eggs him on, totally getting into her role. The gang at the Jeffersonian watch on a closed circuit. The circus people are stereotypes and a things are bit too contrived.

A cheeky little circus romp.

Warning: Spoilers
Hi Bones Booth Podcast, it's English Jan here.

Romp-: to run or play in a lively, carefree, or boisterous manner.

2: Move or proceed brisk, easy, or playful manner.

This is most certainly an episode with its tongue placed firmly in its cheek, and it needs to be viewed with that in mind. That aside, let's get on with a review.

First and foremost, Mr Nigel Murry is back and still spouting silly facts, but isn't this exactly why we love him. Even Cam seems to have fallen under his spell. She comments on missing his insights.

Talking of insights, we learn a little more about Dr sweet's back story. I like that his history aids Booth and Bones during their investigation.

I do find it odd that Bones is excited about joining the circus, given that when she was last at one, they wouldn't talk to her for her dissertation. Why would she want to try again? Compare this with Booth's initial enthusiasm for showing off his excellent knife skills for Bones. I bet Dr sweets raised his eyebrows at this comment, but sadly we don't get to see his reaction.

The Circus terms cause initial problems for Bones and Booth, but Dr Sweets comes to the rescue. I love the casual way Booth suggests Sex to Bones, who doesn't bat an eyelid and goes along with his suggestion, causing the seeking of springs and the rocking of the mobile home. The funniest line comes hot on the heels of this scene and comes from the 24-hour man. "I'll give him good marks for staying power." I don't know who put that line there, but I'd like to bet that it was David Boreanaz.

I love the look between Booth and Bones at the table in the mess tent when Magnum says, "You cannot help who you fall in love with." This is priceless.

Booth brags/boasts about Bone's being very famous on the internet back in the doctor's surgery. He comes across as a proud parent. I'm not sure that is what was intended.

Just before they are about to perform, Bone's get's really into her character when she say's, "Were's the Buck Mousejaw I married?" Unconscious desire spoke out loud, perhaps? Booth's look at her after she says this is interesting.

Booth once again flip flops At first boasting about his knife skills, then just before they are about to go on. He backs down and is worried about killing Bones.

I love Booth's reaction to Bones on the high wire; at first, scared, then proud.

It is not often that Booth apologises for arresting someone, but he does on this occasion. Bone's goes still further, offering to hire a lawyer for him. Nice.

As is the Bones way, the end scene is the best bit of the episode the chat between the now alone Booth and Bones, as they talk about their undercover characters.

I have just one final point - One bed, two single hot-blooded people, you cannot tell me that they didn't get together. Ah, we will never know for sure.

Hey Bones Booth Pod! Warning: Spoilers
Both officers from Oklahoma and Texas are equally backwoods and ignorant. Happy to have Vincent Nigel-Murray back, love a good fun fact. Yyayy we finally meet Buck and Wanda Moosejaw! Look at Sweets swooping in with all the knowledge and lingo. Haha yes Booth's mustache does resemble a small animal. Ofcourse Bones trusts Booth implicitly she'd have to to let him throw knives at her. Poor twins how they died was so sad.

Cute, but why?

Warning: Spoilers
This episode gets a 6 only because Emily Deschanel looked pretty darn good in her knife-thrower target outfit. Otherwise, it was a bit of fluff and seems to only be useful for setting up the increasing relationship between Bones and Booth. The end of the episode is a bit uncertain because I can't decide whether the circus will get in trouble for the death of the twins. The carnies left in the middle of the night, but it's not like they have dropped off the radar. How hard will it be for the cops to find them? I'm not real satisfied with Angela's lesbian relationship after her hot near-marriage with Hodgins, and the never-ending succession of interns is getting tiresome.

That all being said, it's still one of our favorite shows and we hope it stays on the air.

Silly

Warning: Spoilers
Monk went to the circus, so now Bones goes to the circus. B&B investigate the death of Siamese twins who were circus performers. To get at the truth of the twins' death, B&B pretend to be a couple who perform a knife-throwing act. The episode is sort of silly, but obviously it is fun to watch B&B dress up as circus performers. Brennan is particularly lovely to look at. The solution and conclusion are a bit of a letdown. The funniest moment has Brennan's team in D.C. cheering wildly while watching via a remote camera Booth throwing knives at Brennan. Brennan eggs Booth on to scarier and scarier throws, including at a not terribly large red clown nose she slips over her own nose.

just ridiculous
sandcrab27718 July 2018
With each episode, the writers get farther away from the formulaic show ... making booth and brennan circus performers is so pie in the sky, its like a child's whim ... the dialogue between brennan and booth hasn't improved either... they sill sound like a couple of bickering school children ... having brennan repeat how smart she is also detracts from the show because we all know she's supposed to be smart ... i'm not interested any longer

Hilarious gaffe in body reveal scene
katiealisonobrien12 June 2021
Booth's shirt goes from wet to dry in patches throughout the scene, obviously cut together in edit! I suspect there was a water bottle malfunction in the lead up to the scene.
