The laser is not shown functioning as it required a separate power source which was run inside Arnold Schwarzenegger's M-65 field jacket.

One of the students at the military academy is named "Pyle." This is a reference to Private Lenord "Gomer Pyle" Lawrence from Full Metal Jacket (1987). That Pyle is itself a reference to the classic Jim Nabors TV/movie character, Gomer Pyle, who appears in 23 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show (1960), all 150 episodes of Gomer Pyle: USMC (1964), and the made-for-TV movie Return to Mayberry (1986).
Patrick Kilpatrick, who plays the Triple-Eight Terminator, previously played a killer android with a Terminator-like endoskeleton reveal in Class of 1999 (1990).
