FilmFestival Cottbus co-pro event will feature ten projects this year.
Cottbus Connects, the east-west co-production market held at FilmFestival Cottbus in Germany, has revealed the ten projects that will be pitched at its next edition, November 10-11.
The projects participating this year include Berliner from Romanian producer Anca Puiu, producer and husband of Cristi Puiu, who produced 2016 Cannes competition title Sieranevada, which is Romania’s submission to this year’s Oscar race. The film will be directed by Marian Crisan, whose 2008 short Megatron (produced by Puiu) won a Palme d’Or for best short film.
Also being pitched this year will be The Return, from BAFTA-winning Ida producer Piotr Dzięcioł. The film will be directed by Krzysztof Rzączyński and also produced by Maciej Rzączyński.
The Best Pitch Award comes with a $1,700 (€1,500) prize and accreditation to the Cannes Producer Network in 2017. Also up for grabs is the Post Pitch Award, which comes with $28,000 (€25,000) and is designated by a jury...

There are talent labs, and there are cinema funds from festivals (ie. Rotterdam's CineMart; Cannes' Atelier), and then there are the short film sections; every important festival has one, and those who do well get their films promoted and financed to become feature-length debuts. Cannes' Short Film Competition (Court Métrage) awards a full-blown Palme d'Or to its winner, and more often than not, these winning filmmakers become the next big names in cinema. Jane Campion won it with Peel in 1982; as did Marian Crisan with 2008's Megatron (he went on to direct last year's Locarno awardee Morgen), and Cătălin Mitulescu with Traffic in 2004. Lynne Ramsay was a runner-up with a Grand Prix award for her Small Deaths, and while Nuri Bilge Ceylan didn't win with his short Cocoon, it was definitely there in the '95 Competition. - Palme d'Or winner Marian Crisan (short film Megatron won at last year's Cannes) is currently in pre-production for a Fall shoot for his feature length film debut. Morgen which tells story of a man living by the Romanian-Hungarian border who likes to fish but whose catch one day is a Kurdish immigrant is a Romanian-French coproduction by Mandragora's Anca Puiu (currently in production with Aurora) and Slot Machine's Marianne Slot (The Headless Woman). If all goes well with the production look for this to make the deadline for next year's Cannes edition. Casting should be announced shortly and filming according to Filmneweurope will take place in the filmmaker's own backyard (not the literal sense). ...
