In the "womens camps" there were few male "overseers". Virtually all the germans who interacted with the prisoners in the women's camps were females, and the women guards on the whole were notorious for being more sadistic than the male guards.
No concentration camp commanders had either a Knights Cross or a German Cross. Very few saw any combat at all, and virtually all of the camp commanders spent most of the pre-war period working in concentration camps or as participants in the Aktion T4 program in which people with mental disabilities (an others) were "euthanized". Over 250,000 people were murdered in the these killing centers, mostly by gas. 70,000 were killed before the war.
The main events in the movie take place in Berlin, Germany in 1944. Large numbers of Jews being rounded up and marched off by German soldiers. However, the majority of deportations of German Jews took place in 1941, and by 1944 there were very few Jews left in German cities.
