Season 5: Little bit stalled compared to the flow of the previous season but still very funny and well written

The fourth season of this show was a very strong one thanks to the usual good qualities of writing and acting, but helped by Mark's wedding giving structure to the whole season as it is pulled towards this one event. In the wake of the unhappy event, this season seems a little bit stalled by comparison. With both characters outside of a specific narrative thread, the season doesn't quite have the same "season" feel that the last one did, although it is really only noticeable in a loss of narrative sharpness by comparison.

This is the only area where it doesn't feel sharp though because otherwise it is as good as it ever was. The writing falls back into a slightly more episodic nature and does have some things in the plotting that don't always ring true or work particularly well but in terms of the dialogue and characters it is great stuff. Mark remains the best character because he rings the truest for me but Jeremy is also very funny. The supporting characters are not as well used in this season for some reason, but the lead two don't really need too much help. It is to their credit that Mitchell and Webb could probably deliver these characters in their sleep, but never do so.

The fifth season may not be quite as good as the fourth but this is down to change in the narrative flow rather than any dip in quality. The dialogue is funny and the performances make the most of it in yet another great season of this great show.
