Warning: Spoilers
After being a avid fan of the original Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-2000), I shuddered at the thought of a remake. I didn't believe that this new version could live up to the show that I faithfully devoted myself to through my twenties (okay, so maybe I missed a few episodes here and there during the hey days of Dawson's Creek, so sue me). But like many of the older fans, I felt compelled to see what this new show was all about. So last night I tuned in and was pleasantly surprised. More so by the fact that the music and hot young actresses even kept my son in the room(he complained all day Monday when I watched the 24-hour BH marathon on SoapNet).

The series opens with the Wilson brood driving toward their new home in our favorite zip code. Dixson(Tristan Wilds) immediately lets us know he's not happy with the move. Annie(Shenae Grimes) also expresses her displeasure, telling us she gave up a boyfriend and a lead in the school play because of the move. Their mother Debbie(Lori Loughlin) has lived in Kansas her whole life and seems to be excited about the change of scenery. Now we find out the reason for the move, dad Harry(Rob Estes) has accepted a job as principal at West Beverly High.

I was pleased that I hadn't been too spoiled, because I was surprised to see Hannah Zuckerman-Vasquez(Hallee Hirsh) as the anchor woman for West Beverly's Blaze. No, not a newspaper, mind you, a TV station. A poorly photo-shopped picture of Kelly Taylor(Jennie Garth) and Harry Wilson(Rob Estes) lets us know that Kelly and the new principal knew each other from way back in the day. Kelly's little sister Silver ("don't call me Erin")(Jessica Stroup) joins in as the school's trouble making blogger. Brenda Walsh(Shannen Doherty) makes her appearance during the second half of the episode catching up with Kelly and Nat(Joe E. Tata) at the re-vamped Peach Pit.

This episode is full of references to the old, questions for the future, and plenty of surprises. I liked it... a lot more than I thought I would. Imagine that.

The One Where They're Not In Kansas Anymore

Warning: Spoilers
I really like this episode. It is really funny. The Wilson family lives in Kansas. Correction: Lived. They have just moved to The 90210. Harry Wilson, who had lived in Beverly Hills for most of his adolescent life, has just got a job as the principle at Beverly Hills High. He, along with his wife, Debbie, and his children, Annie and Dixon have just moved into the place where everyone is rich, drives expensive cars, and expects everything to be handed to them. When Annie and Dixon go to school, they realise they are definitely not in Kansas anymore. The world is so different. Annie meets, sort-of rebel, Silver, and total 90210 Barbie, Naomi. Annie doesn't realise that by hanging out with Naomi, Silver, betrays their new friendship. Dixon has a hard time adjusting to the new town. Both of them all try to fit it, but it might not go as well as hoped. Overall I give it 8 out of 10.

A model perfect looking family moves from Kansas to Beverly Hills, and never struggles to fit in.

Let me just begin by saying I wanted to like 90210. I really did, but the show never gave me a character to care about. Not one. There wasn't a single character arc to follow. The actors were all attractive, but plastic. And they all appeared to speak with the same voice. The dialogue was boring, always about nothing. Always predictable. It never helped differentiate the adults from the teens.

I mean come on the two supposed leads of the story move from a Midwest town, but speak and dress like they lived in Beverly Hills their whole lives. Where's the fish out of water story, where's the teen angst of not fitting in? Within the first day they climb right to the top of the popularity ladder. My estimation is that most of that blame falls onto the plot, which was pretentious, and never tried to be anything but. The whole backdrop looked like a high end Old Navy commercial.

The writers had two full hours to do something original and fresh maybe even dare I say groundbreaking, and instead you get an MTV super sweet 16 party, where surprise the girl hosting is the school bitch. And even bigger surprise the new girl in town has caught the wandering eye of her jock boyfriend. Who we later find out deep down is a decent guy. He just needed her to bring it out. Big let down… It was the same formulaic plot regurgitated since the show premiered in the nineties. Now I know why the CW didn't do any advance screenings for the press and media. For me sadly it's 9021NO
