Makes "Plan 9 from Outer Space" Look Like Shakespeare
mortwerks26 August 2020
Eric Roberts in a "Top Gun" ripoff from The Asylum- What could possibly go wrong with that formula? Turns out, even more than I could possibly imagine. While normally I would encourage people in any artistic endeavor, no matter how ill-conceived, in this case, I'm asking (nay, pleading) with both Roberts and The Asylum to just... stop. For the love of all that is holy and just, please do not make any more videos! Sell the camera and donate the rest of the equipment to the A/V Department at the local high school for the tax write-off. Then just walk away, Renee... This makes "Plan 9 from Outer Space" look like Shakespeare...

Just a cheap copy of an upcoming blockbuster
denno26 June 2020
Yes, a Top Gun remake (or sequel?) was scheduled for summer 2020. Apparently this did not stop the producers to quickly push their own mock version of Top Gun to the market. Market? What market? All Top Gun veterans from the 1980's wouldn't come close to this cinematic crap let alone watch it and the Millennials don't know what the heck this is. So who is this movie intended for? Beats me.

Also, Eric Roberts seemed to follow in Nick Cage's footsteps by accepting virtually every script that winds up in his mailbox. No matter how bad it is. Seems neither two have a reputation anymore to uphold.

The producers were also snotty and bold enough to keep "Top Gun" in the release title, which is surprising. So if you love amateur acting, plot holes, anachronisms, goofs, errors, visual mistakes and clueless directing, then you came to the right picture. Everyone with a bit of cinematic taste should avoid this though as it will cause eye cancer, bleeding from both ears and uncontrollable vomiting.

Stopped watching 5 minutes in after this happened
Sam_Schick126 June 2020
Not even 5 min into this movie and you see a female "sniper" aim and take down 6-7 guys while overlooking her sights vertically and not even bothering looking into her sights.

Not even gonna give this the light of day.

Zero effort.

It's another horrid Asylum travesty....
joshhanke11 July 2020
What else is there to say? If Asylum's name is on it, you already know it's trash. I don't know how they got Eric Roberts to jump on board with this nonsense, but they did....and I feel bad for him. He may have a long B-movie history, but this is way worse. Just utter crap. Avoid it at all costs, unless you have the ability to look past the bad acting, the bad lines, the bad CGI, the bad story/plot, and the overall ineptitude.

Asylum outdid itself!
jonasatmosfera25 June 2020
Top Gunner is one of those films that are so bad it is really very bad. Every line, every scene exudes ineptitude and badness at a level unseen before by any living being in the Galaxy.

Cliches abound, the special effects are poor at best , amateurish acting, below par production values, stupid and confusing plot. The filming location seems to be an abandoned airstrip in the middle of nowhere.

Asylum strived to be as awful as possible, and they did it!

And as the cherry on the cake, this was a stellar performance by Eric Roberts. He seems to be drunk most of the time....

toviadomus26 June 2020
I don't know who directed it but I can say this looking at the title. This was aimed at Top Gun: Maverick which has a budget of 152 Million USD. I have seen this before. Many poor attempts to confuse people and draw crowd from the larger genuine movie's ad campaign. Who ever thinks this kind of things are utterly spineless. I wish they go to hell. Do not watch this prank movie. Wait for the Original movie Top Gun Maverick It released yesterday. June 26, 2020. This is just poor copy of that movie title. DO NOT WATCH!!!

Another fun one from The Asylum
rothrules695 August 2023
Kenny's Streaming Service Review

"Top Gunner" (2020)

Now Streaming on Tubi

Recent graduates of a secluded U. S. Air Force base must protect a gene-editing bio-weapon from the Russian military - who are desperate to seize the deadly viral agent at any cost.

Another terrific film from the great folks at The Asylum, this came out on the heels of "Top Gun: Maverick" and if your familiar with the 1986 "Top Gun" then you'll enjoy this also, in this instead of Volleyball we play tag football 🏈 the plot revolves around 3 of the "Top Recruits" the Air Force has ever seen and while they were punished at the base for doing tricks in the air (sound familiar) the Russians are trying to intercept a "package" that's "very confidential" and of course the 3 hot shots are the only ones to get it.

Only problem is one girl has a nose ring on, if you knew or are familiar with the military that's a no go.

The only person I know is Eric Roberts is a Asylum regular and he does the "Tom Skeritt" character. If you like to have fun and just want to watch a popcorn 🍿 movie this is a fun one. If your in for a serious movie that makes you think, take a pass.

Really enjoyed the film and fun on a Saturday afternoon view.

The level of stupidity involved hurts.
JagdtigerIV18 November 2020
Another title for this is 'Wingmen Under Siege.' That doesn't change the fact that this is garbage.

Picked this one up at Wal-Mart and I feel ripped off. The cover shows F/A-18 Hornets with an American aircraft carrier under attack with cheap Photo Shop. I was led to believe that it would involve US Navy pilots defending their carrier against a threat. Nope. Instead these are US Air Force pilots, not even pilots-they are training cadets to become pilots.

Review: So, an American 'Special Forces team' of some sorts, are conducting a black operations in Baja California, Mexico. They take down criminals conducting a handoff for a device that I call 'The McGuffin' because that's all it is, it just furthers the plot but has no stakes. It's a biological agent that attacks a person's DNA, but it's never shown doing so. Anyway, the Special Forces seize the McGuffin and evacuate via a CGI stealth plane.

At the same time, a four US Air Force lieutenants are undergoing pilot training at a top secret base that also happens to be in Baja California, Mexico. To train these Air Force pilots, they're using Navy and Marine F/A-18 Hornets? These are cadets and yet they're already flying $30 million aircraft? If they were actual Air Force pilots-in-training they would be flying T-6 Texan II, T-37, T-38 trainers. In addition, why would they be at secret base in Mexico for pilot training? The logic doesn't make sense.

To add to the funny, I figured before the movie even started that this whole production was done on the cheap, that they would not show the 'pilots' getting into, or out of, or show any other exterior portion of their aircraft and I was correct. In some scenes you can see the engine cowlings behind the cockpit and a single, vertical, tail. The Hornet has two angled tails. At first I thought it was an A-4 Skyhawk, but the position of the engine cowlings is higher and just behind the cockpit. I think it's a Aero L-39 Albatros, a two-seat trainer. This was filmed in New Mexico and Jet Warbird Training Center is in Santa Fe. You can rent aircraft there by the hour to train with, and you can even fly a MiG-15!

To pick on the set design further, all the firearms used are airsoft. The muzzle flashes, discarding shell casings, all of it is cheap CGI. In one scene, the cadets are conducting weapons qualifications with M-16s and CAR-15s. One pilot is standing shoulder to shoulder with a buddy and firing at full auto with the 'casings' spitting out. If it were real, those hot casings would be hitting his buddy in the face or go down his collar and into his uniform. Other aspects, like their uniforms, is not worn properly or not accurate for their rank and branch. I'm guessing the production rented the facilities at the airport, got some friends who are in airsoft-judging by their attire, and raided a local military surplus store to get what else they needed.

Back to the story;

The 'commandos' aircraft's fuel pump is damaged during the escape, and they have two wounded. So they set down at a top secret base called Asan. The cockpit interior for this stealth aircraft is a flight simulator. The exterior of the cockpit is black even though they're landing in broad daylight. The hard landing damages their aircraft, and the commando's commanding officer dies of his wounds from a shot that somehow pierced the aircraft without anyone noticing his wound or a hole in the airframe. The new commando team leader implores the Colonel that they must get the McGuffin to the US within 18 hours. Also, apparently ALL Asan base personnel are away for holiday leave except the Colonel, Master Sergeant, and the four cadets. I mean ALL base personnel, including the Security Police. One of the cadets blows the secrecy of the mission when his cellphone call to the States is intercepted by the Russians.

The Russians mount an attack on Asan with poorly designed CGI aircraft. Their first wave of attackers was, as the Colonel said, four Mi-20 helicopters. Those are transports. However, when the cadets take off in their Hornets to intercept-they are now Mi-26 attack helicopters. In this dogfight, all four helicopters are shot down and one Hornet is damaged.

In the next attack, the Russians use a single Su-57 'Felon', Russia's first stealth aircraft that is somewhat similar in appearance to our F-22 and YF-23. The three remaining Hornets rise to intercept and one is quickly shot down by the Felon. The two remaining Hornets conduct a Thach Weave, crossing paths to lure the Felon to jump on one and enable the other Hornet to get behind and engage. This is the dumbest part of the whole movie, and that's saying something. The Felon takes the bait and jumps onto one Hornet that rapidly climbs. The Felon also climbs. The second Hornet is directly behind the Felon, at point blank range for fighters. This idiotic cadet, his aircraft intact and fully armed, ejects and rams his multi-million aircraft into the Su-57. WHY?! He didn't even try to use his M61 Vulcan cannon, the Felon's stealth abilities are lost in visual range. So we just lost an aircraft worth over $30 million dollars because a cadet doesn't understand how a cannon works. To add to the taxpayer's woes, the baiting Hornet's pilot is equally as stupid. Her aircraft is intact and no longer in danger, so she just bails outs. Yep. Two Hornets, worth over $60 million are lost because two fools at the stick do not know how to fly and fight.

So now there's only one Hornet left, and it's not airworthy. The only 'mechanic' they have, which is one of the cadets, is working on it. The 'Hornet' is inside one of the hangers and they try to crop the shots but you can still see civilian single-engine aircraft in frame.

So the Russians come again, this time they bring in Mi-24 'Hind' helicopters that drop 'Spetsnaz' onto the base. The pilots and remaining commandos take off into the woods to get an extraction. Typical for the military in Hollywood-their extraction is delayed and they 'just hold on a little longer'. Well, the Spetsnaz catch up. So the Americans ambush the Spetnaz by having enough time to set up a Punji trap and is shot. Another gets jumped by the Air Force Master Sergeant and stabbed in the back. The others are shot. One of the commandos is a female sniper, and she's killed in the firefight. They have to leave her body behind to keep going, and they also decide to just leave her with the Barrett .50 caliber anti-materiel rifle that still has ammunition.

There's some convoluted reason why, the Americans go back to base that's been overrun, and are quickly captured by the Russians. The McGuffin is taken by them and the Russians leave in their helicopters. Instead of just executing their prisoners and leaving, the remaining Russian guards are jumped and overwhelmed by said prisoners whom then take the supposedly disabled Stealth aircraft from the beginning and give chase. They catch up to and shoot down the Russian 'Boss'. Once more, typical of Hollywood, the plummeting of several thousand feet in a burning helicopter doesn't kill the Boss on impact. He staggers out of the wreckage and is chased by one of the cadets. The pair have their mano a mano fight, and, of course, the cadet wins.

The McGuffin is secured and handed over to the Spooks, who wear Russian gas-masks even though they're suppose to be Americans. Blah blah, patriotic narration and flying jets in formation with cheesy uplifting music. The end.

This film's logic was so painful that I had to stop and come back to it several times to ensure that I wasn't making all of this up. Nothing in this film makes sense, the plot, the characters, the set, nothing adds up. I was so fed up that I mailed my copy back to the distributors because Wal-Mart doesn't accept DVD returns.

If you expect a Tom Cruise quality movie, fly right past this one.

In all likelihood this is the worst "military's" movie I have every seen. Its even worst than Iron Eagles 3. and that one just plain stunk.

Do was 1:23 minutes of your life watching this one, unless you are starving for new content during quarantine.

Not another knock off!
don-damon28 April 2021
Do actors have any sense of integrity any more? Apparently not. Eric Roberts, had a up and coming future. What happened? He succumbed to GREED. He will never be a top star and he will never be filthy rich. His sister has more sense to stay away from these remakes and knockoffs. Anyway the movie itself is poor and and does not have all the bells and whistles that even the original TOP GUN had back in the 80s and certainly not even close to the upcoming TOP GUN 2. Cheesy and meritless. I would say, not worth the time or effort to sit through this.

I never managed to get off the runway...

Pull up! Collision alert! Pull up! Pull up!

Granted, I had a feeling that this was going to be another one of those lousy mockbusters from The Asylum. I assumed as much from the mere title of the movie and its cover. And true enough to my assumptions, as I saw The Asylum's logo on the intro screen, then of course it was as expected.

Still, I opted to give the movie a chance, despite of it having Eric Roberts on the cast list. Why? Well, because once in a blue moon, then The Asylum actually manages to produce something that is entertaining and worth the time and effort.

"Top Gunner" wasn't one such instance. Nay. "Top Gunner" was atrociously bad and pointless. It was a massive struggle to just sit through the ordeal. Did writer Geoff Meed manage to produce anything even remotely worthwhile watching? No. Did director Daniel Lusko manage to turn the lack of a proper storyline and script into a watchable movie? No.

The acting in the movie was actually not all that bad, just a shame that the actors and actresses had literally nothing to work with in terms of a proper script, storyline or characters.

If you enjoy flight movies and pilot dramas, then do yourself a favor and stay clear of this one. "Top Gunner" was by no means an interesting, entertaining, watchable, enjoyable or wholehearted movie. Sure, there are far worse movies out there, but the 2020 movie "Top Gunner" is up there.

My rating of "Top Gunner" lands on a two out of ten stars.

eric roberts are usually not a success-secret
ops-5253523 June 2020
This is truly a disgrace against the USAF and NAVY SEAL's if its meant to reflect their business of training and warfare, i'm not a military specialist, though ive had my turn in my nations service, shot with an automatic and knew loads of drills, but this film is a rubbishfull of junk. it is a film that will disgust even the nerdiest of military aircraft nerds, and if this ''lets make money with a cool poster and title before the superblockbuster hits the market''- bummer should reflect any of the top gun 2 movie, then i will not see that one either.

inconsistencies is a keyword to the whole shalabaise, after afterburning into mach2 speed, how probable is it that all 3 pilots parachutes spot on their base... ooooh how irritatingly stupid, and i guess snow in baja california is a bliss of a surfers dream, how probable is that....?

the special effets are ludicrous and , yes... fake.... and actingwise it could fittin a d-cup or maybe an f'er, because these kids are really suckling for attention, but its a bummer believe me, detention in a military barrack with ten drillseargents would maybe teach them a lesson in how militart life is. there are also a lot of close up filming of the pilots in their seat, and the acting and the bliss in their facial expressions when the deed is done, is like seeing a close face up post -climaxing couple in a d(e)grade(d) porn flick. its a terrible movie...

and ill better quit hammering this indespicable, unlikeabel, stupidety mothridden junk of wannabe filmaking worth a negative score. they could have saved the honour if they had turned this into a militarymocking comedy but they dont... the grumpy old man are angry and there are no way i will recomend this piece of junk. if you doo, play it ffwd 1.5 because they speak sooo slow.

Best Movie I Ever Seen
leftbanker-127 April 2021
This definitely rates the top mark of One Star in my book. One Star is the highest rating, right?

I stood at attention and saluted during the entire movie. On the way out of the cinema, I sang the national anthem and beat up anyone who refused to sing along. On the way home, I blasted Lee Greenwood. Guaranteed to make chills go up your spine and make you proud to be an American.

Don't confuse this movie with "Top Gun" because this movie had three more letters added to it, N, E, and R. The extra "ner" makes it even better than the original with Tom Cruise.

Why Eric Why?
jah266925 July 2020
I cannot tell you much about this movie, I mean I did try (REALLY, REALLY TRIED) but I got maybe 20 mins in and I realised watching paint dry was more enjoyable than watching this. I have to say Eric Roberts deserves better than this, I can only assume he needs the money badly, Eric Roberts has been in some great movies in his time but he seems to be going for quantity over quality. Avoid this one and maybe the next 30 movies he's in this year. Sorry Eric...

Speechless, very shallow film
samuelwong-904332 October 2020
To begin with, why the hell are there so little pilots assigned in that base, and with only one colonel ?

The CGI and the stealth plane, is from the world of X-Men, very unrealistic. The acting is so-so. And the plot is rubbish.

Who the hell directs a film with Fighter Jets fighting Choppers ? And one Russian SU Mig can take out 4 of the USAF Jets?

LMAO. I did finished the film, I rate is a D-Film, the effort is there but the script are rubbish

Warning: Spoilers
I am not sure why Asylum is making mock busters on decades old film. But they are. Recruits at an training base in California must fly and defend the world against the Russia who have a biological agent. Eric Roberts gives a horribly written monologue at the beginning and end of film. How many swagger scenes can one film have?

No sex or nudity. I didn't catch any swearing, but watched most of the film in fast forward.

The moment I saw the female sniper with French nail manicure I started skipping scenes. Done with this miserable flix in less than 5 minutes. A disgrace in all aspects despite of expensive special effects. Better put the money in actors and storyline next time (which I hope for the sake of all mankind will never ever occur). Asylum - as usually - sucks bigly...
