Chuck!!!

Ohhh, this episode is soo great! One of my all-time favourites...It's even better watching it with the knowledge what will happen seasons later...You can really indulge in the various allusions...Rob Benedict as Chuck is fantastic! He was definitely destined to play this role! I love also the cover design of the supernatural books...So over the top and funny!

If someone is ever allowed to do something like this...
flight-of-death3 April 2009
then these people are. You could say *thank you* to your fans in million ways. But this was maybe the best one to do it. It couldn't be more funny, amazingly well written, twisted, and still to be taken more seriously. Just about last week I was commenting with a friend of mine- and what if the screenplay writers are checking on all the theories on what's going to happen on the net... what if some of these things we're going through in our minds in every SN-free day happens, like, for real...

and just about then they all happen, and I could be lip- synchronizing- *but hey, I didn't even write this stuff down!!* whatever, I don't get any hopes high for the final episode- now I just happen to KNOW that ANYTHING is possible.

thank you for that.

Plays a lot darker now
CubsandCulture9 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I am writing this during the final season of the show so I am not sure how it wraps up but the later plot developments, esp. Season 15, has radically altered the meaning of this episode. It use to be a lot more just having fun with meta-jokes and a goofball pulp author. That stuff is still present to degree but it plays a lot darker than it did. In fact this is one of the darkest episodes in the show's run because of Chuck. I still love it of course but there is a cruelty now under the goofball vibe.

It is too the credit to the exact words on the page that this episode flows as well as it does with the later plot developments. In fact it was like seeing it again for the first time on the re-watch. I am glad that the show didn't shy aware from the anti-clerical and humanistic themes. They fit in with a show about ending the supernatural.

The Prophet of the Lord

Warning: Spoilers
Sam and Dean find a series of unknown books in a comic book store about their saga written by Carver Edlund. They lure the editor to discover the real name of the author and they meet Chuck Shurley, who is surprised to know that the brothers do exist. Dean reads the last pages that Chuck has just written and all the events come true. When Dean finds that Lilith will meet Sam, he prays for God to save Sam. But Castiel appears out of the blue and tells that Chuck is a prophet of the Lord and destiny can not be changed.

"The Monster at the End of This Book" is an intriguing episode with a new character – Chuck Shurley – and the return of the mysterious Zachariah. Sam is not strong enough to destroy Lilith but also has the endurance to support her attack. The puzzling conclusion certainly raises the curiosity of the fans of this excellent show. My vote is nine.

Excellent episode

Warning: Spoilers
Another episode from the fourth season, which brings enthusiasm and fear. Many happenings such as the return of Lilith, the Prophet's rising and also Kurt fuller ending another supernatural episode. After watching the promo and seeing Chuck's vision, the author of the supernatural's books, Will Sam deal with lilith? The guest star character Chuck Shurley, who seems to be a simple writer with a pathetic failed life, turns out to be stronger than he seems to be. And moving on to the seals, this episode wasn't focused too much about the seals, they have been less important last night just because they weren't broken. That is it, cant wait till the next episode is out

Like many people in other reviews I'm rewatching the series after finishing it and WOW! This episode has a whole new meaning now. Without spoiling anything to the people watching for the first time, it's crazy how the writers made this fit perfectly into the storyline 10 years later.

It was a good episode when I first watched it, now it's a fantastic episode. It is of course funny how they poke fun at themselves and the fandom with crazy "ships" and stuff like LARPING while still developing the main storyline. But like someone else said in their review, it now has a sadness to it that you couldn't understand the first time around.

Just when you think you've seen every trick on TV... It's pretty safe to say that the core concept (not the reveal of *how*) has not been seen on TV before. However, there is a Hollywood movie that came out 2006 and it had a similar core concept (but a different "how"), so it is not like this idea is unique. Also, the Winchesters' first "solutions" to the situation recall a certain Top 250 comedy from 1993... and episode #3.11 of Supernatural itself. But that doesn't mean this is a rip-off. Roger Zelazny once commented, it isn't the story, but the way the story is told - and the story here is masterfully told.

It all starts from a "WTF?" situation, seemingly making this a Weird One - surely this cannot be a straight episode, right? Then again, it is *so* funny from the start that this could also be a Comedy One. And surely this is not a Mytharc Episode, right? Whatever it turns out to be in the end, it is first and foremost amazingly assured. So assured, in fact, that it slips in a *major* revelation about the Mytharc right under the viewers' noses. At the end of Season 5, if you remember this episode, you'll see how incredibly clever the writers were.

The title sequence is hilarious and from the opening titles we can see the guest stars. It's good to see Misha Collins back, and more Kurt Fuller is also appreciated. As newcomers to Supernatural, it's always good to see the underused Keegan Connor Tracy (Final Destination 2, the new BSG), who probably is so underused because of her distinctive uncanny doll-likeness (in a good way), and the equally underused Rob Benedict (Buffy, Felicity, Alias) is just hilarious.

This is an instant classic, as equally funny as it is significant. It's almost classic enough to warrant a 10/10, but it's structurally a bit unbalanced and with some scenes that could have been excised without affecting the whole. Also, after you've seen the season 4 and 5 finales and start thinking about how this episode and they both form a cohesive Big Picture, your head might start to hurt. So, all things considered, this is about 94% perfect. And that rounds down to 9/10. After all, the user rating for similarly funny and significant but superior #5.8 is higher.

The Winchester Gospel.
zombiehigh1829 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Supernatural writers are courageous enough to poke fun at every thing, themselves, the characters and even fans. (Thank God they apologized about "Bugs" and the "Ghost ship" episodes, and Supernatural fans please stop the Wincest thing, this is just sick) The series has always tagged along with the idea of Faith and destiny vs free will. The boys come across Chuck Shurley aka Carver Edlund who writes stories about them. They find out that Chuck knows every thing about their past to every last detail as well as some parts of the future. Chuck reveals to them that Lillith is coming after Sam, so Dean is worried and wants to take his brother out of harms way. But no matter what he tries to do, Chuck's visions comes true. Later Castiel reveals to Dean that Chuck is a prophet (Yeah I didn't like that) and he is writing the Winchester Gospel. According to Castiel, Chuck's visions can't be undone and no way to stop their fate. However Dean still determined to save Sam, wants a way out, But Sam wants to face Lillith and thinks he is ready to fight. Sam confronts Dean that he is worried he might go dark side and Dean admits that and tells him that he knows about his powers. Castiel told Dean about what Sam did to Alastair and they know that Sam is only getting stronger but they don't know how. Desperate enough to save his brother, Dean does a surprising thing and prays to God for help. Castiel admits to Dean he is unable to help but tips him that Chuck has an Arch angel protecting him from any danger. Meanwhile, Lillith shows up but both she and Sam are powerless on each other, she tells him that she won't survive the apocalypse and that she is ready to make a deal, to hold off the whole breaking of the 66 seals thing if she gets Sam and Dean's head on a plate.

Chuck Shurley was an interesting character though I don't like the idea of him being a prophet and I'm not sure how would he be of any help for the boys if he can't share his knowledge of their future to warn them. Zachariah is becoming more intriguing, I wonder which side is he really on?

Castiel's bond to Dean is only getting stronger, his sympathy is more prevalent. He is beginning to find ways to help the brothers without going all disobedient to higher authorities.

Sam's confession to Chuck about the daemon blood was great. Sam admitted he can't stop and that he thinks his brother isn't strong enough and it's his turn to carry out the weight and repay his favours, However Chuck warns him about the way he is heading and tells Sam that helping Dean might not be the only reason for him to do this but that he likes the feeling and the strength it gives him. Sam, come on this is the hundredth warning you get? Are you that stubborn? Will you ever stop? Or are you the monster at the end of the book? Jared Padalecki conveyed Sam's inner struggles perfectly.

Finally, Supernatural writers, please stop hurting the Impala.
