Merely passable

Not much can be found that is worth commenting on. A few developments are made that will be important for the next few episodes, such as the discovery of the sacred city and Eldradimon, so "Journey to the Sacred City" at least keeps things moving forward. We also learn what became of the commander-general and more on Spencer Damon's reputation in the Digital World. Yet, very little actually stands out.

Perhaps this is because the most interesting aspects are underplayed. For example, Thomas' reaction to Spencer Damon's reputation further hints at the family issues that Thomas has endured, which haven't been explored since the 16th episode. Admittedly, the more cautious character being envious of the impulsive leader is essentially nothing new, but the approach is sufficiently different that I really did want lean more about the underlying concerns.

At this point, I think we've seen quite enough of Yoshi's stagnant habit of breaking up arguments between Marcus and Thomas. In fact, I'm so fed up with it that I felt somewhat joyous when she pulled that bullfighting maneuver with the cerberusmon; it's silly but at least she's doing something new.

On the villains' side of things, the digimon-hybrid trio is given a power boost by Kurata, but there's still little to be invested in. Kouki's rivalry with Marcus is nothing more than a competition between two guys who are the "Digimon" equivalent of meatheads, while Ivan is a mere muscle-bound airhead. Nanami is the only one with which the series will do something interesting, as will be seen in the next episode.
