Par for the course

Warning: Spoilers
Professor Payne runs into an old girlfriend with some shocking news: she had a child by him years before, and now she's hoping for some financial assistance. Some of you may recognize the actress playing the girlfriend. She is Nikki Cox, who used to be on a TV sitcom that aped MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, called UNHAPPILY EVER AFTER, or something like that. In this episode, she is barely recognizable as the daughter from that show due to a major cosmetic change in her facial appearance. Meanwhile, Melinda frets about whether to have kids or not. We've heard this before, of course. Her decision at the finale may surprise some of you.

A Great Episiode

This is another example of how the writers used material to further the on going story line. In this case, it centers on Professor Payne, his dead wife, and a former lover. The wife dominates the episode, eventually revealing that her resentment of Payne reflects her sadness in his refusal to have children. This then gets reflected back on Melinda's same refusal.

The show demonstrates what a great character Payne was. His departure to do his own show was never compensated for by the Eli character. But both he and Eli eventually put Jim in the background for much of the series, even during the Jim/Sam nonsense.

I had to turn off.

I am afraid the series had been going rapidly downhill by this time but Nikki Cox was appalling and all I could see were her lips. I wasn't sure why she was in it until I saw she was married to one of the cast.

It's sad the show became so tired so early.
