A Gripping Episode leading into the Finale
Rcwilkinson12312 May 2008
While not perfect, 'Quest' fills Smallville's need for a great lead-in to the show's season 7 finale, dealing with the over-arching storyline of the second half of the season, including retroactive continuity that concerns the entire series.

On the brink of finding the Traveler-controlling device created by Virgil Swann and the Veritas society, Lex finds himself in trouble when he gets attacked by a robed man who carves specific symbols into Lex's chest. Clark gains knowledge of the attack and meets this man in a church in Montreal, Edward Teague- the last remaining survivor of Veritas. Meanwhile, with the help of others, Lex deciphers more and more clues to lead him to the same church. Clark may be in trouble when Teague is dissatisfied with the way that a certain Kryptonian has been working on fulfilling his destiny.

This episode is just what was needed for the show in the third episode from the climactic 'Descent,' continuing a gripping story that began in the 14th episode of the season and has changed the meaning of previous seasons of the show. The action scenes are light, but the mystery and hunt therein serve for great television, and what should be a great conclusion to the last season with Michael Rosenbaum (Lex), and Laura Vandervoort (Kara) as a series regular.

"why think it through when you can just see how it plays out " - jor-el

Warning: Spoilers
Clark's faced with a dilemma. If he lets Lex live, then Lex could find a way to control him and he could become incredibly dangerous to the people of Earth. But he can't just kill Lex, because of his principles. Clark has had this dilemma before, when Lex was going to be Zod's vessel. It might be an interesting dilemma if we didn't know before hand what choice Clark was going to make. Lex lives, of course. We know this. So we're not really left weighing the pros and cons of committing a murder, and the dramatic "you have to kill Lex!" moments really fall flat. We're simply left wondering how Clark is going to stop Lex from using his Kryptonian controlling device on him.

That's fine. How IS Clark going to survive the Kryptonian controller? That's an entertaining enough question to fuel the next few episodes.

We learn during this episode that the device that can control Clark was supposedly sent to Earth by Jor-El to prevent Clark from turning against humanity. It's not hard to see why Krypton exploded. With Jor-El at the helm who knows what's going to happen. That guy makes absolutely terrible plans. Remember when he froze Clark? Remember when he took away Kara's powers? But really, making a device that can control your superpowered son and then giving it to the very humans that said son is supposed to be protecting humanity from takes the cake. That is by far the best, worst laid plan Jor-El has ever made.

Strong genes

Warning: Spoilers
I find it an insult to my (our) intelligence, that they think we would believe that a man like Robert Picardo ( father Teague) would have fathered a guy like Jensen Ackels ( Jason Teague) with a woman as beautiful as Jane Seymour ( mama Teague). Come on people, we already saw what Mr Teague looked like in a flashback. Why ? Isn't the guy we first saw, able to play it again. WTF? I was really late to the Smallville Train, but, I think this show takes people for a bunch of imbeciles with its plot holes, shooting errors and stupid mistakes as having actors dressed differently in the same shot. We see those things, and they're irritating.

Shaking my head in stupefied wonder...
brandondugrey27 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What happened to this show? It was once entertaining fluff, with the occasional above average storyline (Hourglass, Stray) thrown in. Now it's a hodgepodge of sludge and over the top high drama, low octane rubbish.

A crazy monk who believes in aliens, a blood ritual mixed with Kryptonite juice, skin carving, clock puzzles, a purple Kryptonian Rubik's Cube that creates a Star Wars like holograph of the Earth, a secret society devoted to the arrival of an alien "traveller" who must either be controlled or destroyed, lore that doesn't remotely match up with the Superman legend.

Like the headline says, shaking my head in stupefied wonder.
