Why so much hate?

DBS 3 is what DBS2 should have been...it did something different and was an instant improvement over 2. The graphics and effects were better. I had fun with this movie!

Better than the second but fails with sloppy acting, writing, and terrible direction.

Deep Blue Sea 3 (2 out of 5 stars).

Deep Blue Sea 3 is a sequel that is an improvement over the second movie. But still not better than the original. The plot follows a group of engineered bullsharks that are wrecking the ecosystem in a underwater haven which they have to stop.

The plot is terribly put together. The script and direction is cheesy. The humor feels forced with its stereotypical characters. The direction is horrible. The cast ensemble is good but the performances are sloppy. The visual effects is cheap. It does have some entertaining action. But fails with its script and direction.

A sad decline
djdutts30 July 2020
Deep Blue Sea (1) was superb. But sadly it's fallen by the wayside since then and this third installment underscores that entirely.

I desperately wanted this to be good, I really did, and watched with fingers crossed, but it's just poor. Weak story, awful acting, despite sharks looking good. It's not worth it, and a sad decline. It's a pity as lots of people are crying out for top quality shark movies.

Well, its starting to get back on track...
paul_haakonsen28 July 2020
Well, this movie came out of the blue, pardon the pun. I hadn't expected to see a third movie in the "Deep Blue Sea" movie series, especially not after the abysmal "Deep Blue Sea 2".

So I sat down to watch "Deep Blue Sea 3" with very little expectations or hopes for the movie, given the previous movie. But still, it is a shark movie, so of course there was a chance of it being good. And I do like creature features.

Turns out that "Deep Blue Sea 3" definitely was a step up in the right direction, as it proved much more enjoyable and entertaining than the 2018 "Deep Blue Sea 2", but still it wasn't as good as the 1999 first movie "Deep Blue Sea".

The storyline in "Deep Blue Sea 3" was enjoyable enough for what it turned out to be. Sure, it was generic and predictable, especially as shark movies go. But still, it was fun enough to watch. Just a shame that the sharks didn't really have that much screen time or played too big of a part in the movie. I watch these movies for the sharks, not for the dubious characters in the movie.

"Deep Blue Sea 3" had a fair enough cast of actors and actresses, however there weren't any familiar or famous faces on the cast list, for better or worse.

If you enjoy generic shark movies, then "Deep Blue Sea 3" is worth a watch. Keep in mind that this is by no means an outstanding or memorable movie. My rating of "Deep Blue Sea 3" is a four out of ten stars.

So bad I had to write my first review!
irizarryr-770142 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Huge spoilers...

I think what stood out to me the most was the horrible acting. Mainly because many times throughout the movie, characters watch their friends and loved ones die and the reactions don't seem genuine or real. There's a serious lack of emotional communication.

Like when Shaw dies...Emma Just continues to scream "Shaw!" But there's not really much emotion.

I think that's what stood out the most, aside from what the other reviews mention about the bad CGI, bad writing and bad directing etc...

Not quite watchable
concreterdude29 July 2020
Glaring technical flaws come hard and fast. I went in expecting technical inaccuracies , but it was really bad. Bad swimming, bad boats, bad diving, bad robots. None of which could actually work as depicted. Especially the nerf guns that blow stuff up.

Add to that some low B grade actors, bad cgi, and bad camera work.

I won't pick on the bad plot, its a killer shark movie. Bad plot is expected.

Do your self a favour and re-watch the original. Or if you want b grade. Try Sharktopus. I wouldn't even torrent this rubish.

All the wannabe critics and their 1's and 2's smh
Top_Dawg_Critic4 August 2020
Any film with such good cinematography, directing, and on-point S/VFX and gore, is undeserving anything below a 5/10.

This film had a great setting, decent story, and ok acting, as well as the aforementioned qualities. All you wannabe critics need to learn the numbers in between 1 and 10. It's a solid and well deserved 7/10 from me.

stomach churningly bad!
georgio-2649031 July 2020
Acting 0/10 CGI 0/10 story 0/10 realism 0/10 cast 0/10

oh wow, this isnt just bad, its M&S bad! so we initially see woman in the sea with a great white shark , hitting it on the nose as you would do a puppy for wetting your carpet! then the shark pushes her into a coral, she bleeds and nothing happens! there is a sea station, like a floating village, the roofs are made from palm leaves, never have i known palm trees growing up out of the ocean thousands of miles from land, fresh veg and food aplenty on this man made plot, runnig fresh water the lot! it is just so unreal and unbelievable!

oh then the casting, wow wow wow wow, the famous 5 are all here, white jock, white grumpy woman, black guy with a vest on, the intelligent asian and the camp vegan! im all for diversity but why do we HAVE to have the stereotypical 5 in every movie? these people wouldnt cross paths!!!

so we move on to diving in wet suits amongst massive big sharks who are obviously not hungry! oh dont bother with it , its pathetically awful! this is the a lame effort, the worst movie of 2020 by a long way! AWFUL!

Don't believe the haters!
Blackadder30328 July 2020
Listen, you know what you're getting with a movie like this: Cheesy script, ridiculous plot, fun characters and creative shark deaths. This delivers on all of these, which makes it a classic shark movie and a real easy watch.

Don't go in expecting oscar winning scriptwriting (it seems some reviewers are)... Manage your expectations and you'll have a great time!

Enjoyed the acting and I especially LOVED Spin, need to get myself some shirts like his!

Ignore the movie snobs, this is a shark movie classic...

Definitely for Deep Blue Fans
jayg_5829 July 2020
We've got a whole cast out of the C list. Mostly unknowns, but that's not a bad thing. Especially the lead "Doctor" who looks quite exotic and must be known for some of her popular series', like Lost. I'd never seen her before. Across the board, most of the acting is a bit wooden, and we didn't always remember our lines, did we. Nevertheless, the photography was great, including the underwater portions. Not quite as sharkcentric as the iconic 'Deep Blue Sea' (1), and certainly not the budget, but just enough tie-in to keep it legit, and a lot of similar set-ups (see: formulaic). I liked it, and it deserves better than the 4.6 is currently has. I'm guessing too many DBS 1 purists and maybe some non-sharkaholics contributing. You know - for the life of me - I can't remember DBS 2. Must have been very unmemorable. I may have to revisit.

Really really hard to watch.....
justind-7020430 July 2020
When people say that there is good acting in this movie, they must be trolling right? After trying to watch this for an hour I just want all the actors to be eaten by the terrible cgi sharks. THe actors look ok, but when they open their mouths I don't care what they say as they have no emotion in them at all. Probably one of the most boring movies I've even seen.

Decent Effects, Insufferable Characters
dave-145-51526628 July 2020
Lovely locale and competent Shark CGI gets bogged down by main characters so dislikable it's distracting. I started praying for Emma and Eugene to be eaten as soon as they stuck their toes in the water for the first time. Everyone, save for Richie and Lucas (who are supposed to be the bad guys) have a massive chip on their shoulder - and it gets old fast.

Dumb story distracts from movie
rjwilson-5624128 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is supposed to be a sci-fi creature horror in the same ilk as the first two; however, it quickly becomes a soap opera.

The premise of a bunch of scientists on a floating island (the same plot device as the first two movies) studying sharks when a group of angry guys and one familiar guy turns up. This instantly bothers "Shaw" who has been circling around the main scientist lady waiting for his turn to mate, which is now in jeopardy because the new hunky scientist guy is the ex flame of the pretty scientist girl.

This is literally the only tension that is created in the first part of the movie and it's all about some guy feeling he has a mating right to a female of his choosing. Then the tension gets doubled when it's revealed the all muscle and no brains Aussie henchman is a wannabe serial killer and more interested in just losing his sanity with no explanation and just starts trying to murder everyone on the island.

Notice the lack of sharks in this review? That's because there's a general lack of sharks in the movie who only show up to kill people when you're fully expecting them to do so in the most predictable way.

The sharks play maybe 3rd fiddle in this ok movie. The plot is predictable if not a lot contrived with very little making sense. The only death that isn't predictable is the random suicide of hunky scientist and it's not predictable because it makes zero sense in relation to the story; although I'm sure this made "Shaw" happy as he maybe thought his mating rights had been secured.

Fun dumb entertainment
joao-vendetta2 August 2020
Usually don't write these, but saw so many bad reviews that had to step in. It's the second sequel to a movie where smart sharks eat dumb people, what are you expecting? It's awesome! The first one is great, the second one is unwatchable, this one is pretty cool. Has dumb moments, of course, but overall very entertaining.

Big disappointment
micahdavisott26 August 2020
I was expecting a pleasant surprise but instead was greeted with a political plot grouped with B level acting. The script says climate change more than "shark". The directors don't present climate change as an ever occurring element of a planet existing but as something that is destroying the planet. Part of the plot is also deriving chemicals from the sharks brain that makes people let's hateful. You can tell that the creators cared more about sharing their political views than making a good movie.

The better nightmare of the Deep Blue Sea...
mrharrybond29 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Firstly, I want to discuss DBS2 and my theory to what could of possibly happened here. DBS2 was a movie that was never asked for and we got it. The production company behind DBS2 was indeed SyFy (with Warner) which explains the mess it was. SyFy has a long history of making a mess of once monster blockbuster movies (Lake Placid, Anaconda etc.). I'm not sure what the intentions were around SyFy taking over DBS from Warner, however the possibly that they could make a cheap movie that had a fan base and not do very much and make money is what comes to mind.

Researching the production background of DBS 3, SyFy had no involvement with this movie and it clearly shows in the finished product. However, my theory is that DBS2 made a lot of money ($1,656,55) in DVD sales) and had the hype for Warner to want to the take back the rights or Warner were genuinely disappointed with the results of DBS2 and did not want them to continue making a bad name for DBS (with high number sales). This reflects on all the recent SyFy movies DVD sales, where majority of their movies struggle to hit 100k in sales which is the possible factor to Warner taking the rights back for DBS3 and making a better movie.

Now to the movie itself, I'm not going to sit here and tell you this is the best movie this year and it was amazing, but there was a HUGE improvement in every department and 100x better then DBS2. The movie was actually entertaining and the story floated away from the previous movie setting and introduced to a more realistic setting. The acting was better, however in parts were badly presented (however, I went into this movie knowing it was no Meg with leading name actors staring)

The CGI could be considered awful, and yes it was for current technology, but again they're not going to throw a £30m+ budget into a movie that was never going to make it near and reviewers and viewers need to consider this when watching. Some scenes that were really a HUGE improvement were the likes of a boat sinking, death scenes and the explosions (DBS2 would never), however the Shark CGI is the one issue that ruins aspects of the movie... you get a good scene with a badly CGI shark, my suggestion would of been to create a animated real shark (this would of been cheaper then CGI) for scenes from behind or for example a scene where a shark had been captured and held would of suited better with a realistic image (again, this takes time and a on-going amount of money) - This would of definitely helped with the end scene where the main character (Emma) is being attacked underwater inside a structure/machine and you see various shots of the shark from above and the tail waving around.

The story was interesting, I liked the aspect that they moved away from the research facility, however it still linked (as those sharks have escaped and a science team had came to capture them) - the plot centres around a environmental team vs science team which equals to a battle for cruelty and research. (Which and who is right?!) and it links the previous movies although as much as we want to forget DBS2, how the movie was set up previously we had to have some background aspect of the previous movie for the franchise to continue.

However, if you go into movie not watching DBS2, you can just imagine the same scenario from the first movie (with small elements not from the first movie, however they explain them in this for the viewer to understand and they are easy to pick up) and this is the conclusion of the movie.

Overall, DBS3 is actually a really fun entertaining movie and doesn't deserve some of the harsh reviews it is getting from viewers. Do not go into this movie expecting a Meg styled movie with a huge budget with amazing scenes and stars leading. It's definitely one of those movies you watch when there is nothing else to watch, however if you were browsing through the TV and you saw it on you would probably watch again to be entertained and to get rid of boredom. I am giving this movie 6/10 based on the fact that certain scenes were badly paced and acted and they could of used real elements for the sharks (as this is a shark movie and not a action movie) and if Warner were taking over the project because of how negative DBS2 was perceived, I would like to think they would of thought about this more... which makes me believe that this movie was made to make more money... this is from Warner, a company worth $5.12 billion (they have the contacts and partnerships to make a cheap movie look better).

Not a patch on original
philip-554-6025366 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It was OK, but nothing to get too excited about.

Casting, acting, storyline, CGI, not a patch on the original from over 20 years ago.

I know it is fashionable, but why do so many movies now, this one included, have a bunch of guys who all die, but the 3 ladies come through without a scratch? It is getting very boring.

So much! fun
mickdansforth29 July 2020
When I bought the Vudu bundle of all three movies this morning my expectations were low for Deep Blue Sea 3.

Deep Blue Sea 2 is a bit cheesy . Enjoyable, but cheesy.

And in an era of so many super-cheap Asylum shark movies, it would seem silly for legacy movie studios to put money into shark movies.

But apparently Warner Bros made enough money with Deep Blue Sea 2 and The Meg to warrant putting actual money into Deep Blue Sea 3.

There's a ton of underwater scenes of people diving around this beautiful coral reef. The floating town sets are also really great. The acting is spot on.

I loved everything about this movie.

I hope Warner Bros puts even more money into Deep Blue Sea 4.

Why the low ratings? This one is really nice. Good acting, funny at times. So yes if you like the first one, skip the second and see this one. Really nice.

Deep Blue Sea 3 is like Jaws.
fgesu-097791 August 2020
Deep Blue Sea,like Jaws, was great, but just like Jaws the sequels continue to degrade till all that's left is to watch the sharks swim & eat the cast. Amazing how boring that can get. So like Jaws just stick to the original & remember to stay clear of the real ones.

Just watch Sharknado instead... you'll thank me later.
avadams29 July 2020
And that's from someone who dislikes discount Star-Lord (Ian Ziering) and loathes nearly all things made by The Asylum. Or better yet, just watch the first Deep Blue Sea and pretend that none of the others exist. This movie is just so incredibly boring. The pacing is stilted with long stretches of underwater scenes as the main protagonist tries to deliver her environmental messaging. I wasn't expecting high cinema, but this is a complete dud. None of the characters are likable, the dialog isn't engaging, the CGI is only passable, and you don't even have a mascot to provide a distraction. Not even the tough-talking, shark-punching, self-empowered, and environmentally-aware female researcher running around in her swimsuit adds anything to this opus. And yes, identity politics are in play here since none of the men or women know how to relate to each other -- either as co-workers or antagonists. There's no playful banter, no real scientific exploration, no suspense -- just tired social media tropes and cliched characters. And when you see who survives to the end, it will make you cringe.

The worst storyline and acting ever seen - really poor story although a potentially great topic . How bad could a storyline become ? What a pathetic lead role.
