The multi-generational boy band crossover event to end them all is here: One Direction and ‘NSync have linked up — well, kind of. Liam Payne has got a new song out today, “Teardrops,” which he co-wrote with ‘NSync’s Jc Chasez.
Fittingly, the track harkens back to that late-90s/turn-of-the-millenium sound, with a somber, twinkling guitar weeping behind booming pop production. In a statement, Payne said, “’Teardrops’ is about the vulnerability of heartbreak and the challenge of overcoming those moments. This song marks the start of a new beginning, there...

Just a few days before he would make his inevitable appearance on Usher’s Super Bowl Lviii halftime stage, rapper-producer extraordinaire Lil Jon tells me about the self-soothing mantras that kicked his decade-long wellness journey up a notch. “My affirmations in my time of really finding meditation were ‘I am healthy, I am happy, and I am at peace,’” he says. After he emerged from a mosh pit on the football field of Las Vegas’s Allegiant Stadium – performing his hit with DJ Snake, “Turn Down for What,” as a...

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

Though Huluween is almost officially over, Hulu is not slowing down at all as the new month approaches! The streamer will head into November with plenty of new additions to un-spook yourself and keep warm, including the new Awkwafina and Sandra Oh-led “Quiz Lady”; Christmas classics like “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” and “The Polar Express,” and much more.
On the TV side, Hulu will have the exclusive two-episode premiere of FX’s limited murder mystery series “A Murder at the End of the World” starring Emma Corrin. “Fargo” fans can also catch the next-day streaming premiere of Season/Year 5, which will star Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Plus, in comes more of the debut season of “Spellbound,” a serialized re-cut of Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia,” and several original series premieres, including “Black Cake” on Nov. 1.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.
Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

When Mia Berrin first began performing as Pom Pom Squad around 2017, audience members would approach her after shows and admit that they’d been surprised by how much they’d enjoyed themselves.

With Oscar voting officially underway, members of the Academy are hunkering down and catching up on all the films from this year of extended eligibility. Inarguably the hardest awards season to read in modern history, there are dozens of interpretations of how the season will shake out and where AMPAS voters’ minds are within the race.
I believe there’s an “X” factor to this awards season that could potentially affect what pundits perceive the nominations could look like. In addition, there’s also a disagreement on what this “X” factor could be. Some argue: just look at the guilds, that’s the only Oscar voter overlap. Others say Academy voters are disconnected from the season, and anything is possible. The truth is, it’s somewhere in the middle — but my theory is that international voters can be the tilt for various films and performances.

On the heels of the nominations for the Golden Globes and the release of the BAFTA longlist, the Screen Actors Guild Awards have weighed in on the best films and performances of the season. Critics awards be damned, SAG will do what they want to do.
Overall, the nominations provided not as many jaw-droppers as we’ve seen in normal years. Chadwick Boseman made history by scoring four nominations on the film side in one year — two individual noms for his performances in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Da 5 Bloods,” and the others as part of the ensembles.
Heavily male casts dominated the ensemble categories. A24’s “Minari” has the most women represented in its cast with Yeri Han, Noel Kate Cho and supporting actress nominee Yung-Jun Youn. Amazon Studios’ “One Night in Miami” from Regina King, the only female-directed film to make the lineup, has two women among its cast,...

Aaron Schneider welcomed working with Tom Hanks on their new film “Greyhound” as it was “Saving Private Ryan” which inspired his first film as a director. “Tom’s production company has a long history of WWII projects with ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘The Pacific’ and they defined the state of the art in creating authentic productions.” Schneider was part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel, conducted virtually by this writer (watch the exclusive video above).

“Greyhound” cinematographer Shelly Johnson vividly recalls those anxious days before filming began when he was still waiting on the arrival of the Sphero 65 lenses. Director Aaron Schneider takes his time when choosing a project. As you’ll hear him detail in our interview today, he’s consistently passed up work that he couldn’t get excited for. After moving from cinematography to directing, he won an Academy Award for his Live-Action Short in Two Soldiers, followed by a strong feature debut in Get Low. Since then, he’s bided his time, now returning with the Tom Hanks vehicle Greyhound (reviewed here). Hopping on the phone with me a few days ago, Schneider was surprisingly candid, as well as detailed in his answers. If you’ve ever been curious about how you actually make a film like this, you’re in luck today… Below you will find my conversation with Schneider. We obviously touch on what drew him to the project, as well as working with Hanks, who not only stars but wrote the screenplay as well.

Showboating: Schneider Sinks Ships with WWII Historical Action
Cinema is littered with war-time submarine action epics, a claustrophobic setting which taps into universal anxieties and fears, and a new addition to a dwindling subgenre is Greyhound, the sophomore effort from Academy Award Winner Aaron Schneider, last behind the camera with the droll dark comedy Get Low (2009).

If a patriotic, proudly square tale of military courage under fire (minus the Trumpian jingoism) is what you’re looking for in these pandemic times, Greyhound (available on Apple+ starting July 10th) should float your boat. It’s early WWII action in the North Atlantic, with Tom Hanks tackling the role of Captain Ernest Krause, a Navy career officer taking his first command. The last time Tom Hanks played the captain of a big ship, he was fighting Somali pirates in “Captain Phillips,” a kinetic, immersive big-screen experience that was nominated for six Academy Awards. He’s now back at sea in “Greyhound,” but this time Hanks plays the commander of a World War II destroyer fighting Nazi submarines in the North Atlantic — and this time the film will be seen on a small screen, because Sony sold it to Apple TV+ for release this week.
That makes “Greyhound” the third recent war-related film to be given a predominantly streaming release, following Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” and Rod Lurie’s “The Outpost” — and like those two films, this one at times screams out to be seen on a bigger screen than most viewers will be able to give it.
On the other hand, “Greyhound” is pretty modest as war movies go.

Greyhound will see Tom Hanks return to the backdrop of World War II; an arena in which he has excelled, both onscreen in 1998’s Saving Private Ryan and offscreen as executive producer of HBO miniseries offerings Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Here Hanks serves as star, writer, and producer for the Sony film, tackling a different aspect of the war, the seas, with a story centered on an international convoy of Allied ships, racing across North Atlantic seas filled with Nazi U-boats.
Greyhound is an adaptation of the novel, The Good Shepherd, by C.S. Forester. It’s a World War II-set drama, following a Navy officer (Hanks) who finally gets to command a destroyer, but has to get on top of his personal doubts and demons as he does so.

Not counting his voice-acting work, it’s been quite a long time since Tom Hanks had a major film arriving during the summer movie season but that will change in 2020. After a few delays (it was originally set for March of last year), this June will see the release of Greyhound, directed by Aaron Schneider (Get Low) and, in a rare occurrence considering he’s not the director, scripted by Hanks himself.
Set during the first part of World War II, the Captain Phillips star returns to the sea, playing captain Ernest Krause who leads a convoy of nearly 40 Allied ships. The film depicts their journey across the North Atlantic as Nazi U-boats are on their tale. It certainly looks in line with Hanks’ affinity for inspirational historical tales and Schneider is clearly working with far expanded scope here. So hopefully the delays were simply the case of fine-tuning what...

The audience at Nashville’s famed Grand Ole Opry got one awesome surprise on the evening of September 25 when Bill Murray made an unannounced appearance to sing alongside country and folk music legend John Prine and The Steeldrivers. The appearance marked Murray’s Grand Ole Opry debut. The group sang Prine’s 1971 song “Paradise,” and Murray’s beaming smile as he belts out the chorus is priceless.
Murray has been a longtime fan of The Steeldrivers, the Nashville bluegrass band featuring fiddler Tammy Rogers, bassist Mike Fleming, guitarist Kelvin Damrell, mandolinist Brent Truitt, and banjoist Richard Bailey. The band is well known for being the launch pad for country music superstar Chris Stapleton. Murray has made surprise appearances at numerous Steeldrivers concerts, even buying tickets for his fans to one of the band’s 2017 concerts. The band was featured in Murray’s 2009 movie “Get Low.”

Best known for his arena-caliber Edm and bombastic bass drops, Los Angeles-born DJ-producer Dillon Francis has a long and storied history with Latin music. He began releasing mostly dubstep tracks in 2010, when the then-nascent moombahton genre — which combines electro-house with Latin-tinged reggaeton beats — first took the Internet by storm. Francis then notched his first major hit in 2011 via “Que Que,” a Spanish-language track alongside mentor and frequent collaborator Diplo, featuring Dominican-American artist Maluca. Fast-forward to 2018, and Francis has reached the cusp of a new career chapter: Dillon Francis, Latin pop crossover star.

If you spent any time in the Northeast this summer, it’s likely that you heard HoodCelebrityy’s “Walking Trophy,” which was a favorite of radio DJs. The track helped this Jamaica-born, New York City-based singer and occasional rapper earn a deal with Epic Records for a reported $600,000, and on Friday, she released Inna Real Life, her first Ep as a major-label artist.
“Walking Trophy” was a self-esteem booster, and the bobbing synths and skipping beat — very similar to her 2017 track “Cut Them Off” — went down smoothly, offering a welcome relief from formulaic radio rap.

The last year has been tough when it comes to mental illness, which has claimed the lives of popular artists and creators including Chris Cornell, Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain and Margot Kidder. This year the MTV Video Music Awards could pay tribute to two artists who died by suicide since 2017: Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington, who was 41 when he lost his life last July, and electronic dance music artist Avicii, who was 28 when he died this past April.
Linkin Park is nominated for Best Rock Video for “One More Light.” It’s their eighth nomination in this category, tying Aerosmith for the most nominations ever. They have won it three times before, for “In the End” (2002), “Somewhere I Belong” (2003) and “Shadow of the Day” (2008), but they haven’t won any Moonmen in 10 years. The video for “One More Light” features past footage of Bennington performing, along with footage of the band over the years.

The spring movie “Isle of Dogs” marks the eighth pairing of actor Bill Murray and filmmaker Wes Anderson. In fact, Murray has participated in all of Anderson’s films except for his first project “Bottle Rockets” which he made with longtime friends Owen Wilson and Luke Wilson.
Murray first came to national attention when he joined “Saturday Night Live” in its second season to replace the departed Chevy Chase. Like many of his SNL colleagues of the era (Chase, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd) Murray was able to parlay his television success into a film career. He first made his film mark in comedies but in later years would take on increasingly dramatic films as well. Murray would return to TV in 2015 for the HBO limited series “Olive Kitteridge,” for which he won an Emmy as Best Supporting Actor a suicidal man who becomes involved with the title character (Frances McDormand...

Some of our favorite choreography videos are typically set to the tunes of popular dance hits (see: Demi Lovato's "Sorry Not Sorry") or throwback jams ("Get Low," anyone?). So when we came across this video for Florence + the Machine's "You've Got the Love," we were curious to see how Florence Welch's indie-rock vibes translated into a dance routine, and the Millennium Dance Complex didn't disappoint. With choreography by Nathan Trasoras, the routine made us see a new side to the band's music that we never expected. Watch the video above to see a group of talented dancers tear up the dance floor to Florence's hauntingly perfect voice.
