Should not have been in cinemas
nqpz4 April 2008
This movie wasn't bad. I think it was a great idea to make this movie, and I even think it turned out to be okay. I think it's good that this movie shows how life is in some areas of Denmark. That way people will realize that something is wrong and that there has to be done something about it. I didn't know such neighborhoods existed in Denmark even though it's an extremely small country with no more than 6 million people.

Now, why do I rate this movie the way I do? Mainly it's because of a lack of plot. The plot basically relies on following a group of immigrants in Denmark in a period of time. That's all, and I even though I don't like it, I don't think it should have been made differently. This movie is more like a documentary than a "normal" movie (by "normal", I mean having a story and a plot). But at the same time, it is far from a documentary. It's just the "no plot" thing that reminds me of a documentary. Another reason why I rate this movie badly (although not playing much of a role in my final rating) is that it's not the kind of movie I would normally want to see (I didn't want to see this one either, but I had to).

I think it's amazing that this movie was made for only 1500000 kr. (Danish currency - DKK). That's about 316000 American Dollar or 201000 Euro. I don't think it would've been any better if more money had been involved.

I think this movie belongs in television as an "action documentary", not in the cinema as a movie.

If you think you like this kind of movie, go watch it! It's not that bad. I know a couple of persons who actually enjoyed this movie.

So this is it....

Warning: Spoilers
So, this is it - the long awaited feature debut from the praised filmmaker Kaywan Mohsen. And what a film! It's got it all - bad acting, bad script, bad cinematography, bad lighting, bad editing, bad voice over, bad structure. You get it all in "Eye For Eye" If this is the future for danish film and cinema, I'm heading for the exit door. How could anyone, and I mean anyone, ever even think about supporting this project financially? This is the worst film ever to come out of Denmark, and I can't recommend it to anyone.

"Eye For Eye" is about K who lives in Århus, Denmark. He finds out that a girl he knows (or actually only met once at a party) has been raped. Sp he and two of his wannabe-tough guy gangster friends finds the rapists and make them pay for what they did to the girl. After that he all of a sudden realizes he doesn't want to be a gang banger anymore, and then the film ends.

WOW!

There is nothing new in this film, a scene is directly stolen from "Irreversible" (the scene at the gay bar), the script is filled with holes, is very poorly written and has no structure what so ever. The cinematography is far the worst I have seen for a long long time. I would say the cinematography in "The Blair Witch Project" is Oscar-material compared to this mess. The editing is definitely NOT done by a professional, and the color grading is just something I still wonder about - what the hell happened there??? This is all homemade ego-video and no one can call this mess film-making.

the truth
k1-128 February 2010
If you are a filmmaker or interested in independent movie making. THIS IS IT. Facts. Eye For Eye was labeled 'the most talked about' movie in Denmark 2008. It was released in 75 cinemas out of the round about 120 cinemas that Denmark holds. Written, directed, produced, edited and music composed by the same kid. At the time a 17 year-old boy. The full cost was 100.000 kr., which is around 18.000 US dollars. Money that he managed to borrow from a bank. The movie was edited, graded and music score composed on a laptop. A producer was shown the result and there from a deal was made. 75 cinema owners were shown the movie and chose to run the movie in their cinemas. The movie reviews hit from 1 up to 6 stars. Mixed feelings from the little country. Some of the people in the business got mad and frustrated because of all the pr the movie was getting. Especially because at the time many expensive danish movies would only have a release in 10- 20 cinemas. Politicians from the different parties commented: 'an important movie' 'a warning to the people' 'a true depiction of what's happening in the danish ghettos'. The movie turned out to sell 5 times more than another movie about foreigners that had a release at the same time. A movie which had had a budget that numbered 10.000.000 danish kr (ca. 2 mill dollars). No offense - I've heard good things about the movie. Nevertheless Eye For Eye sold more tickets than three danish movies with regular budgets that were released at the same time. Movies which have used millions and millions of the peoples kr. Now .. My name is Kaywan. Kaywan Mohsen. I've been around the whole country in about 150 elementary schools discussing the elements and themes in the movie. Courtesy of The Danish Film Institute the school system has used the movie in school projects. Thousands of kids have used the movie and it's story as their major school project paper. I've personally been at The European Film College where the movie was shown. We interviewed the students afterwards .. and that's where I understood that this movie IS and WILL forever be an example of hope for new filmmakers. The method of making is a book in itself. Eye For Eye is a 'love it or hate it' movie. I've heard people say it's the best movie ever and I've heard those who say they don't like the story - BUT who willingly admit that the real life actors, locations, energy, style and rawness which the movie bears is UNIQUE. Peace up! Ps. The story is a story of a Muslim gone Christian - so if that offends you - do not watch this movie. 1 love
