Ever since global streaming giants Amazon Prime Video and Netflix entered the Indian Ott space in 2016, the conversation around original series has mostly revolved around them, thanks in part to market leader 21st Century Fox’s Hotstar’s circumspect attitude at the time about producing content.
Netflix had great success with “Sacred Games,” while Amazon rode on “Inside Edge,” “Breathe,” “Mirzapur” and the recent “Made in Heaven,” and the U.S. majors also announced several other commissions.
Cut to 2019 where the scenario for homegrown Indian OTTs is vastly different and there is a glut in originals production. Hotstar, with 150 million monthly active Indian users, scored a slam-dunk in January, announcing a slew of A-listers signed up to create content, including Shekhar Kapur (“Elizabeth: The Golden Age”), Neeraj Pandey (“M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story”) and Kabir Khan (“Tubelight”). The first of the new original commissions include local remakes of hit franchises “The Office,...

The Newsroom and Mary Poppins Returns star is in the early stages of development with the remake, which will be produced by her own indie King Bee and eOne.
The series, which ran on ITV predecessor Thames Television between 1978 and 1992, starred Leo McKern as Horace Rumpole, an elderly barrister in London who defended a weird and wonderful mix of clients. It started as a radio play on the BBC before making the move to television.
The reboot was revealed at a Deadline-moderated Banff Connect event in London by Polly Williams, eOne’s head of scripted development in the UK. The Designated Survivor studio has a first-look deal with Mortimer’s company, which she runs with her husband Alessandro Nivola.

AMC has opened a writers room for 61st Street, a potential drama series from BAFTA-winner Peter Moffat, Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society and AMC Studios. The project is being developed as part of AMC’s “scripts-to-series” model, which opens writers’ rooms to produce multiple backup scripts for pilot scripts the network is high on. In success, the projects that have gone through a writers room move to straight-to-series orders.
AMC usually has two “pickup” seasons — winter and summer — when it selects projects to open writers rooms. 61st Street is part of this winter season, joining Rainy Day People, from the Halt and Catch Fires team of Chris Cantwell, Christopher C. Rogers, Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein, and Kevin Can F*** Himself (working title), from Valerie Armstrong, Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, which were designated for “scripts-to-series” consideration in November.

Meek was in a Philadelphia court Monday when the judge ruled he'd violated probation from his 2009 drug and weapons case by getting busted for a St. Louis airport fight ... and his reckless driving arrest in NYC. Even though both cases were dropped, the judge said the arrests alone were...

Last time on NCIS, Palmer stepped into Ducky's shoes while Ducky is teaching a semester at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. We also met Special Agent Jacqueline "Jack" Sloane, played by Maria Bello. I think it would be fair to say that her introduction to the team is off to a rocky start.
In this episode of NCIS, titled "Fake It 'Til You Make It," Reeves witnesses his friend's kidnapping, and McGee deals with his awkward teenage years.

Slowly but surely, the 25th James Bond film is starting to take shape. A couple weeks ago, Craig was rumored to be on his way back to the franchise. Soon after that, MGM and Eon announced an official release date for the new flick, and just yesterday, the New York Times made a report that all but confirmed that Daniel Craig would be returning to the role of James Bond.

So what’s next for the film? The next big slot to fill is the director’s chair. Who would be the one to take this upcoming film to fruition? Most recently, there have been rumblings around Christopher Nolan as a potential helmer, but he’s all but said that he wouldn’t do a film that wouldn’t need him, and by all accounts, their re-hiring of Daniel Craig...

Samantha Bee eviscerated Attorney General Jeff Sessions for increasing sentences for non-violent offenders caught with drugs. This is a reversal of a policy put in place former president Barack Obama, who aimed to reduce jail time for some non-violent, drug-related crimes.
"The worst weapon in the decades-long War on Drugs were mandatory minimum sentences," Bee declared. Later she added, "It's like Trump nominated a VHS tape of Reefer Madness to run his Justice Department."
Bee argued that modifying or eliminating mandatory minimum sentencing is a rare idea with bipartisan support.

“Big Little Lies” isn’t the only HBO limited series fielding demands for more seasons. “The Night Of” set the TV landscape on fire when it debuted in the summer of 2016, and people are still hot to see more nearly a year later.
Speaking at an Emmy For Your Consideration event in North Hollywood on Thursday night, co-creator Steven Zaillian, joined by stars Riz Ahmed and John Turturro, was asked whether or not Season 2 was a possibility.
“My client pleads the fifth,” joked Turturro, who played defense attorney John Stone on “The Night Of.”
“Listen, we would love to do it,” Zaillian said. “And when I say ‘we,’ I mean [co-creator] Richard Price and myself. If we can come up with something that we fall in love with, we’ll do it. If we don’t, we won’t.”

Am I looking at an image of a dress on the ground covered with leaves? Is it from a lover’s tryst, or is something more sinister going on, and why would I think that?
On the whole, media and society have turned darker and more aggressive as we’ve moved into the 21st century. Being besieged with nominally factual content has constrained us all to a different type of viewing, more of a true-crime voyeurism than ever -- inundated with reality or its simulacrum on television and computer screens on a daily basis, we wonder how we ended up here. When did we start needing to see unedited live-steamed reality of life’s most horrific moments? The true-crime program America’s Most Wanted premiered...

Woman: Mother, Daughter, Wife, Friend… Curated by Dr. Thalia Vrachopoulos President's Gallery - John Jay College of Criminal Justice , NYC September 15 - November 4, 2016
The exhibition "Woman: Mother, Daughter, Wife, Friend," curated by Thalia Vrachopoulos, investigates the diversity and complexity of women’s multiple roles in their private and public lives as they confront societal constraints, requirements and misconceptions with their own strategies. The participating artists, George Pol. Ioannides, Orestes Kourakis, Lena Morfogeni, Dongyeoun Lee, Vangelis Rinas, Frandy Jean, Jason River and Helene Pavlopoulou, respond to the theme with images that resound with deep sincerity, sympathetic rendering, and uncliched, unbiased depictions. The eight international artists, who hail from Greece, Haiti, America and South Korea, bring their individual cultures into focus, bypassing the generic stereotypic impact of "globalization" in art. There is no trace of the usual gratuitous images of sexuality or abuse, ubiquitous when women’s issues arise. There are no nudes on view.

Welcome to The Night Of's day after, when viewers are undoubtedly experiencing the slightly woozy, vaguely hungover sensation that accompanies eight weeks of investment in a TV show and the promise of a potentially earth-shaking pay-off that, in the end, can be filed under mileage-may-vary. To be fair, it was apparent very early on that this HBO miniseries wasn't likely to dominate the modern equivalent of water-cooler discussions in a way that, say, the true-crime phenomenon Making a Murderer did last winter, or the spot-the-Reagan-era-reference game that was Stranger Things...

A review of The Night Of finale coming up just as soon as I forget my hat... "Who did it?" -Stone The Night Of was, in no particular order, a murder mystery; a legal procedural; a drama about the way the gears of the criminal justice system can grind on cop, criminal, and family member alike; a harrowing portrait of how a civilian survives behind bars; and a black comic character study of the low-rent attorney who finds himself in the middle of it all. These are not incompatible kinds of stories; you often see many of them comfortably overlapping in the same production (even if John Stone's eczema was unique to Criminal Justice and this remake). But as The Night Of moved along, it became clear that Price and Zaillian were better at — or simply more interested in — certain aspects than others, excelling whenever the focus was on...
