Very entertaining finale, even if a few bits are hard to believe..
Sleepin_Dragon5 October 2021
Any is trapped, and it's quickly apparent who on board is causing the mayhem.

I can see it didn't go down too well in every quarter, I however thoroughly enjoyed it, I thought this was exciting, high octane, and crazily paced.

Bags of tension, once the intrigue passed, it became no holds barred drama. It was effectively Line of Duty on a boat.

I can see why it's not for everyone, as the events are a little hard to believe, however it's pure escapism, pure drama, plenty of excitement.

Not too sure they'll bring this back, it felt like the end to a one off series, thoroughly enjoyed overall.

8/10.

Pretty gripping finale.

What can I say?

All things considered, I think the finale was indeed divisive, but I enjoyed it.

I'm sorry, but now I live for Prentice's redemption arc.

Beautiful representation here, and all in all, some gripping action.

Yes, maybe somethings aren't realistic, but if I wanted realism I'd stick to a documentary.

Little bit disappointing, but overall good

Warning: Spoilers
Time wasted on the unnecessary relationship and custody of this little girl etc. I didn't really care about that story line through out the series.

Hunting the Russian spy on the sub was gripping though; needed more time spent on the sub.

Disappointing ending

Warning: Spoilers
Loved the series but felt it was greatly let down with this final episode. The tension ran out halfway through and the second half was just tying up loose ends in a rather slow manner, loose ends that really didn't need to be tied up. Would've been better to get more time on the sub and then end with the suspect and Silva being airlifted off. Leave the audience to wonder what happened next, no need to spoon feed them the predictable endings I watched here.

Great TV SHOW

Submarines are excellent setting for murder mystery (no way out, tension...)

A little bitt disappointing ending, but overall great TV show. Thriller/mystery parts is amazing, personal/drama - ok, but a bit boring.

What About Treason?
Erin5026619 February 2024
Really liked this series but then again I will give anything Suranne, Rose, Martin, Shaun, Gary, and Adam are in, I will give a try! But what I don't understand is why the word treason is never mentioned. If someone had been messing about in the US Navy as they had done in the UK Navy here, certainly it would be a treasonous offense, I should think so wouldn't the CPS be charging whomever accordingly? Not just giving the perpetrator a murder charge or whatever but wouldn't it be treason also because they were not only a citizen but also serving in the military. Other than that it's a great story and it's nice to see everyone stretching their abilities by taking on a bit different roles except dear Suranne, of course, because she's most always a copper, LOL. The submarine scenes were very realistic because I could feel the claustrophobia a fact wafting its way through me so even though I know they're on a stage if it's done really well as here I will still feel that so kudos to all and I can't wait for series two!!!

Episode 6
Prismark103 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This should had been a 10/10 episode.

Amy Silva is trapped. Doward is doing his best to avoid exposure. Although no one remarked just how long it takes Silva to clean herself down.

In other movies and shows. The finale would be resolved in an elaborate chase scene. Vigil does it differently and takes it cue from horror and science fiction.

Doward is like a predator, stalking his prey and picking them off. At one point it even turns a bit Silence of the Lambs. Doward has a breathing apparatus in a sealed off room overloaded with bleaching agents. He is confident he will get Silva.

Vigil was a thrilling series but they did run out of story two thirds of the way through. It ended up being a Return of the King tribute act as it spent the remaining time tying up loose ends.

A Tidy Whodunit - S01 Review
JoshuaMercott1 September 2022
A British military submarine found itself dragged into a strange occurrence that claimed the lives of a group of Scottish fishermen working on a trawler (the Mhairi Finnea). Setting quite the tone for a high-seas mystery, "Vigil" season 1 delivered thrills and intrigue that will stay with you long after the finale.

James Strong and Isabelle Sieb did notable work directing all six episodes. Writers Tom Edge, Ed Macdonald, and Chandni Lakhani wrote a captivating script.

Glenn Gregory and Berenice Scott's musical scoring was amazing. Matt Gray and Ruairí O'Brien's cinematography was engaging. Great work on costume, production design, and sound effects. Outstanding work by the stunts and editing teams. Art direction and set decoration were quite good.

The submarine at the heart of this story is H. M. S. Vigil. That said, this show is a fictional drama, and not based on any actual events, navy vessels, or people.

DCI Amy Silva, played by Suranne Jones, was great. DS Kirsten Longacre, played by Rose Leslie, was memorable. Cdr. Neil Newsome, played by Paterson Joseph, was quite good. Lt. Simon Hadlow, played by Connor Swindells, was good.

RAdm. Shaw, played by Stephen Dillane, was great. Det. Supt. Robertson, played by Gary Lewis, was quite good. Jade Antoniak, played by Lauren Lyle, was great. Coxswain Elliot Glover, played by Shaun Evans, was amazing. Lt. Cdr. Mark Prentice, played by Adam James, was outstanding.

CPO Gary Walsh, played by Daniel Portman, was great. Lt. Tiffany Docherty, played by Anjli Mohindra, was good. CPO Tara Kierly, played by Lois Chimimba, was also good. Lt. Cdr. Erin Branning, played by Lolita Chakrabarti, was remarkable. CPO Craig Burke, played by Martin Compston, was quite good. CPO Matthew Doward, played by Lorne MacFadyen, was notable.

All other cast and crew did good work in "Vigil" S01 now streaming on BBC iPlayer.

Britain's nuclear deterrent capabilities were captured in a vulnerable light. The series managed to shed some light on probable systemic loopholes, including foreign interference. They bottled significant tropes that pointed to crucial current affairs.

In just six episodes, season 1 "Vigil" managed to convey a depth of meaning and possibilities. It was amazing to watch them solve not only a murder that occurred inside the submarine H. M. S Vigil but also the case of four fishermen whose boat had the misfortune of being entangled in an unidentified sub. This soon unraveled a web of inter-governmental conspiracies.

"Vigil" expertly captured the nuances of a great whodunit. It left no loose ends, and proved it could hold its own in a sea of streaming productions all vying for viewer attention. With "Vigil", I found a script that contained all the elements of a great murder-mystery plot set in the real world. The last two episodes particularly kept me on the edge of my seat.

Episode 6
MrFilmAndTelevisionShow28 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The ending episode was often predictable and I didn't feel there was really any big reveal, no grand finale or anything. Everything ended up all tickerty boo (for most people) and one of the videos of Burke they showed at the end just basically proved him innocent from the start, pointless addition. Nevertheless it was enjoyable enough.

[6.5] Relationships don't mix with ...
cjonesas25 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 6: A rather weak episode with a good first part and a lame second one. From the beginning of the series it was somehow clear that it lacked real thrill and suspense, but nevertheless, we sat through its 6 episodes to be rewarded with near nothing aside some good suspenseful moments in the sub.

Relationships don't mix with mystery-"crime" drama.

9/10 for the first 30 minutes, 2/10 for the final 30
creesio27 September 2021
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the finale, it's just it felt like two separate episodes. The first half was exciting, thrilling, pulsating; everything this drama deserved. But I was let down by the final 30 minutes. I just don't think a drama with such a cool subject matter needed the romance/custody batle element to it, it had enough layers with the espionage, murder, politics, warfare, sleuthing etc... I don't think a 6 episode series made me like Amy Silva enough to really care what happened to her after the sub. Agree with the previous review, they should have ended it with them apprehending the spy and being air-lifted to safety, the audience could have filled in any blanks themselves.
