A classic relived with mastery.
Gkublok13 November 2020
A classic relived with mastery. A nostalgic heroic storyline with exciting and well-built characters. It served as a school for most of the shonen who came after him, managing to capture all the magic and rhythm that the plot of the franchise's games have.

The animation and the soundtrack are cool and made with a lot of love. This is the maximum that Toei Animation can offer. The script is faithful to the manga, with some minor adaptations of humor and violence, but nothing to spoil the show.

If you are a novice, take advantage of the raw material that has shaped generations.

Good anime and story
baderamro-3855514 November 2020
Dragon quest the adventure of Dai is an excellent story and manga, no doubt. Strong characters, plot, and quite entertaining. It is early to judge this re-make of the original anime. But watching 6 episodes so far, I feel this new version lacks the dark atmosphere that surrounded evil characters in the 1991 version. The battle between Avan and Hadlar, for example, felt darker and more serious in 1991 than 2020. I found the music in 1991 so far superior, which adds to the 1991 version. The new version (until first 6 episodes) is a bit rushed as well; several parts which gave momentum to plot are skipped. That is not to say the new version is bad; animation is still superior to 1991. Also, the rush is probably to catch up quickly with where the manga originally stopped. I hope they pace down at that point and include more of the details which made the story great.

Old but new story
stefanozucchelli12 November 2021
Good series whose style reminded me a lot of the first season of Dragon Ball with which shares both strengths and weaknesses in many ways.

With the levels of power it remains much more contained than Dragon Ball even if at some point at the end something a bit like in the Naruto series gets out of hand.

Apart from this the series is the faithful repetition of the manga so there are no surprises or substantial changes. The characters are well made and are not stereotyped even if they refer to archetypes of the genre.

It is a series done well, certainly does not shine for originality but considering that the manga from which it is based is from the 80s it can be said that it has withstood the passage of time in an excellent way.

dai no daibouken is an underated anime of 2020 -2021
moncikoma24 January 2021
Most people who rated this anime in myanimelist, is giving a low rate because there is not enough gore, sex , and enough blood, CG animation

they totally forgot about condition of anime as of now, during covid times, and the fact that this show is for kids in japan..

and they give rate based on their own judgement, without considering these facts..

but I'm glad people in imdb give it a high rate, around 8, and it deserves it

I don't need to say anything about this anime.. because u already know how good this anime is from people above me... LMAO and yes, it deserved it..

have fun watching it!

Visually beautiful with an enthralling story.
tylercookaitken9 May 2021
There are no dips in quality for this series, story wise and in animation. One of the fight scenes is so well animated, its hard for me to say I have seen better, its only downfall is part of the fight scene had cgi in it, but asides from that, I blows deku vs overhaul and any jujitsu kaisen fight out of the water in terms of quality and beauty of animation.

Mediocrely written
Jetsss115 November 2021
A lot of fighting scenes are badly written thus making the fights very illogical. A lot of illogical choices they do and so on making this show feel like a toddler had written it.

For all those who grew in the 90's and watched the first version, this is a love letter for us, I cannot begin to tell how happy I am this remain loyal to its original story, it's like being a child again, what a sweet taste in our hearts.

It's seeing back in time and yet something new Animation is gorgeous Clearly this was made with so much love.

As we for RPG lovers dragon quest franchise comes to life, stronger than it was.

Give it a chance I assure you, won't be disappointed Every battle is a thrill you just wish to live in it and be part of this world.

It's an anime that lives up to the greatest ever existed.

A Nostalgic Journey
jeanvit22 January 2024
Dai no Daibouken is a love letter to our childhood selves, who never quite understood why the original version had only those 46 episodes playing on TV over and over again.

Downsides: It's a shonen from almost 30 years ago, so absolutely all the genre's tropes are there, making it pretty basic by today's standards.

Upsides: The animation is consistently good. The soundtrack and the voice acting are spectacular. Characters are really well-developed. There are extremely memorable and emotional moments.

Overall, it's a great choice for those who enjoy the genre and don't mind something with a more "basic" vibe.

Well made Anime, childish character
rivera-irving0111 March 2024
Dai no daibonken, is a masterful made anime, fight scenes are top notch. The story a bit dull but still enough engaging to keep watching. Would have given it 8 stars, but the characters, specially the monsters are presented in a childish way. The dialogue too is a bit childish. Would it been a great Anime if it were aim for an older audience.

If you can get past that, would definitely recommend to watch it.

It passed under the radar, just learn of it because it came out on Netflix. So like other previous reviews that I read here, I think is good anime that is underrated.

Sorry for my grammar but English es not my first language.

I couldn't get into it, is very much a kid's cartoon
tacomaguy15 September 2023
I couldn't get into this Anime, I watched about 8 episodes and everything about it, from the animation to the dialog, was very basic and very simple.. like for children. The animation (even of the monsters) is very unthreatening... like how villians are in children's cartoons. I think that is partially why I don't care for it. Perhaps I stopped watching it too early but I'm not really enjoying any elements of the story. None of the characters are particularly great, I don't care for how they do magic, and I don't worry about any of them getting hurt or losing fights which brings no tension. Normally when I find a good anime, I'll binge the whole thing immediately but this one I watched those 8 episodes over the course of 4 days or so. It just didn't grip me at all. I would imagine I'd be hooked enough by now if it was something worth continuing but it's just not.

At the pinnacle of all races
Nonomemes8 December 2021
Due to the underrating I see from most, I have to tell you first: this is NOT seinen.

I think the best age for this is around 15-16, for me it was not really an issue as I was watching the original series in my youth.

This is the best western middle age oriented fantasy you can find, no contatgion with ninjas, shamans, etc.

And the two japanese characters (Popp and Merle) are very well mixed with the others.

I think the writer often use Popp as a pivot character exactly for this, because he represent the typical target of this series, physically almost a fully grown man but inside still a young and immature teenager.

The Perfect Blend Of Fond Nostalgia And Modern Animation
Geedeeb25 September 2021
A new episode releasing is one of my favorite parts of the week. I grew up reading the manga from my older brother's collection and I was absolutely enthralled, nineties manga just hit different. It combined the best aspects of JRPGs with a cute and expressive drawing style and it was plotted perfectly. The story zipped along so smoothly that it was over before I knew it and it made me yearn for more.

Since, unfortunately, the story was never extended beyond the 36 manga run, the next best thing was to see these characters and storylines I love so much brought to life on the small screen (after the initial disappointment of the first adaptation being cut short), and boy does this series deliver. It was actually a blessing in disguise that the first iteration of the show failed, because modern animation has come so incredibly far and is now able to do justice to even the most complex fight scenes and set pieces. The animation style is so faithful to the manga that it sometimes feels like you are literally transported into the pages while it unfolds. And I'm glad a new generation of kids gets to (re-)discover this incredible series.

Popp was the heart & soul of the series, the MVP. A beautiful anime with great pacing and fight scenes.
sisubalan5 August 2023
Apparently its a remake of the classic run which i was unaware of before. But i do familiar with this franchise as i grew up playing their roleplay games. I adore the amazing world building aspect in this anime, just like in the game. Tons of characters development.

Great animation quality with great attention to details and popping colors, which was bright and exciting to watch. With the amazing scores and audio quality, it sets up a perfect adventurous mood for the viewers. It was so fun.

The storyline was quite generic, something we've seen adopted repeatedly by several animes. The twists were too predictable, unfortunately. The pacing was great - fast but not too much. The opening and ending songs were okay, some were memorable.

Love the characters potrayal and their design. Emotionally approachable and memorable. Perfect for cosplaying. The voice castings were terrific for most of them. The action scenes were amazing to watch.

Few side notes, Maam have the same writting as for sakura from the naruto series. Dai reminds me of Gohan from the dragon ball series. Most of the magic spell name were hilarious. Perfect for binge watching, wont burn you out. Highly recommended.

Enemies who would rather talk, then win the fight, with childish names for characters and spell/moves
snikers-043755 December 2022
Every single enemy our heroes face, lose the fight because they start talking, instead of striking the heroes one last time when they are down. Even if they get another chance, they never learn from their mistakes and start giving speeches, as if thay are trying to loose to the heroes.

The enemies have no believe in their own cause and often ends up rescuing the heroes, with some weak excuse of a reason, that doesn't even make sence.

The heroes also lose because they feel pity for their enemies backstory. Even more pity then they feel for the huge amount of humans, who will be killed by the evil forces, they are bissy feeling sorry for.

The characters name and the names of the spells sound like a unimaginative child came up with them. Names like Maam, Popp and Blizzblaze. Spells names like kaswoosh (wind), kafrisizzle (fire), kazap (lightning) and puff (turn into dragon). Even the lead characters name Dai is to close to "die" and works very bad on english, when the heroes keep yelling "die, die, die".

To me this seem like the work of a child or someone who mentally is a child, but at least it's not written by a discusting pervert like so many other anime.

To sum it up, bad writing, bad fighting and a big waste of time for anybody who is older then 9.
