Projects from Oscar-winning Scottish director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland), Philippine filmmaker Erik Matti (On the Job) and Austrian auteur Barbara Albert (Nordrand) have been picked as the most promising new TV pitches at this year’s Series Mania festival.
Macdonald’s George Blake, a real-life spy thriller about the famed double agent, and Matti’s The Squatter, an East-meets-West crime story about a secretive Filipino maid and a tenacious Ukrainian detective who team up, won this year’s Beta Development Awards and will receive $54,000 (€ 50,000) each in development cash from European production and sales company Beta Group.
In addition to his feature work, which includes The Mauritanian with Tahar Rahim and Jodie Foster, and State of Play starring Ben Affleck and Russell Crowe, Macdonald has helmed several acclaimed documentaries, including the Oscar-winning One Day in September (2000), 2004’s Touching The Void and 2013’s Marley.

Peter Bart: In A Buzz-Less Market, Smart New Movies Must Overcome Critics’ Disdain & Audience Torpor
“Uninspired.” “Never catches fire.” “Non-memorable.”
I was sifting through reviews last weekend as the first step in my mission to re-discover the habit of moviegoing. With Barbenheimer finally behind us, I decided to see three new movies on successive days – yes, buying tickets and going to theaters.
But first come the critics: Their reviews, I assumed, would be tepid (excerpts above.) Box office results over the Presidents Day weekend were the lowest in 23 years, down 17% from a year ago — not a good portent. If there are some promising new movies out there, why are they hitting the wall?
Here’s a clue: Remember wide openings and buzz? Well, welcome to the new age of nonbuzz – new releases are greeted by the sounds of silence.
I decided to be resolute, anyway. I’m buying tickets.
Spoiler alert: I thoroughly enjoyed my filmgoing adventure. But there seems to be a...

Monday Am: No surprise as Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love continues to overperform now at $52M over 6-days after a better than expected Sunday of $9.45M (to originally expected $8.55M).
Monday is looking to ring in $5.5M. Current 3-day is $28.6M, 4-day is $34.1M. Some falsely guessed that coming off a record Valentine’s Day of $14M that Bob Marley: One Love would be front-loaded, ala The Color Purple which posted $18.1M on its opening Christmas Day (granted that had previews rolled into it). However, Bob Marley has a bigger appeal than that feature take of the Broadway musical; for in six days, the reggae legend biopic has already made 86% of what Color Purple finaled at ($60.5M). Overall, a great start for what will be a piece of counterprogramming as we approach Dune: Part Two on March 1.

Valentine's Day gave the box office the shot in the arm it sorely needed as both Paramount's "Bob Marley: One Love" and Sony's "Madame Web" opened in theaters. They will both have a nice, long initial stretch as they not only got the mid-week holiday opening, but they will benefit from this Monday's President's Day holiday as well. As far as the head-to-head battle goes? It's not going to be remotely close, as the Bob Marley biopic is crushing Sony's latest Marvel Comics adaptation in the early going.
"One Love" pulled in $14 million on Wednesday, which marks a new record for a mid-week Valentine's Day opening. While that's nowhere near the record "Deadpool" ($42.5 million) set on the holiday back in 2016, which fell on a Sunday that year, it's now a high watermark for a non-weekend V Day debut. The previous record holder was 2012's "The Vow" ($11.6 million). Given...

Thursday Update: Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love was bigger than projected yesterday earning $14M; the best Valentine’s Day mid-week take ever. Audiences loved it more than critics with an A CinemaScore and 5 stars on Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak and an 80% definite recommend. In addition, it has a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 95%.
Sony/Marvel’s Madame Web did $6.05M at 4,013 theaters with a C+ CinemaScore. Oy. That’s lower than the B earned by Marvel Studio’s The Marvels, but it’s the same grade as Sony/Marvel’s Morbius.
Wednesday Update: Moviegoing is slowly getting back into fashion, with Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love biopic seeing an estimated $12 million on Wednesday. That’s a record for a movie playing on a midweek Valentine’s Day, besting the $11.6M made by the 2012 Channing Tatum-Rachel McAdams romance The Vow.

Exciting Details About Naa Saami Ranga Vs Saindhav(Photo Credit –Facebook)
For Tollywood, Sankranti is the biggest festive season. Due to back-to-back holidays, many makers prefer this festival slot for their big releases, and this year was no different. This time, not one or two but four noteworthy films arrived at the box office, and among those were Naa Saami Ranga and Saindhav. Unfortunately, these two films fail to create ripples. Let’s compare their final collection, budget, and ratings!
Closing collection of Naa Saami Ranga & Saindhav
Starring Nagarjuna in the lead role, Naa Saami Ranga was released on 14th January and opened to positive reviews from critics. Even word-of-mouth was favorable, but the same wasn’t reflected in the collection. After a good start, the film didn’t continue the momentum for long and wrapped up its run at 30.50 crores net at the Indian box office. It equals 35.99 crores gross.

North American Box Office: Here’s Day Estimates Of Madame Web & Bob Marley: One Love(Photo Credit –YouTube/IMDb)
Yesterday, on Valentine’s Day, we saw two major releases locking horns with each other at the North American box office. Yes, we’re talking about Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web and Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Bob Marley: One Love. Considering the differences in genres, there’s no clash as such, but still, they will affect others’ businesses to an extent. Let’s see how much both films earned on their day 1!
This year, there haven’t been any tentpole releases so far, but still, things are fair enough. Films like The Beekeeper and Mean Girls raked in good numbers and turned out to be box office successes. Other than that, there are holdovers like Wonka running in theatres. Now, two new Hollywood releases have hit theatres, but none of them are looking to score big.

Full confession: I love Bob Marley, so a biographical drama about the reggae icon is pure catnip for me. Bob Marley: One Love, a charming, personal look at the music giant, is produced by his son, musician Ziggy Marley. Ziggy Marley influenced the casting of Kingsley Ben-Adir, who is excellent as Bob Marley. The drama covers his life, music and beliefs, religious and political, with a special focus on his relationship with his wife Rita, played by the also excellent Lashana Lynch.
The film opens at a pivotal moment for Marley, as he is preparing for a concert in Jamaica that he hopes will soothe heated political tempers in the run-up to an election. The opposite happens, with an assassination attempt on the singer. Moving back and forth in time,...

London-born actor Kingsley Ben-Adir stars as reggae superstar Bob Marley in this perfectly serviceable biopic from King Richard director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Written by Green, Terence Winter, Frank E. Flowers, and Zach Baylin and from a story by Winter and Flowers, Bob Marley: One Life charts the life of the Jamaican singer from his rise to fame to his untimely death at the age of 36.
Bob Marley: One Love portrays the tumultuous political and social landscape of Jamaica following its independence from the United Kingdom in 1962. Amidst escalating tensions between rival gangs, Marley finds himself thrust into the midst of national turmoil. When he is approached to participate in a peace concert aimed at uniting the people, Marley realises that his involvement in politics could jeopardise not only his career but also his life.

Michelle Buteau’s new TV series, adapted from her books of essays, is a refreshing take on our run-of-the-mill rom-com. The show is energetic and diverse—exactly the kind of thing Netflix needs to make more of! It is unfortunate that we got only eight short episodes of this easy-breezy binge-watch, so it would be so fantastic to see a second season real soon. Netflix hasn’t renewed the hot new show just yet, but we can imagine, with the majorly positive response it’s received, we’re likely to get a second season sooner than later. We’re so tired of seeing the same beauty standards and non-diverse media that we should definitely be encouraging such shows to be brought to the limelight and renewed. If you haven’t seen the show yet and just stumbled upon this article, check out our full review for reasons to watch Survival Of The Thickest.

Martin Scorsese hit Vegas on Thursday. No, he wasn’t there to revisit the Sin City locale of “Casino,” one of his mob masterpieces. He traveled to the gambling Mecca bearing his latest opus, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a labyrinthine story of murder and greed that, if he plays his cards right, might be one of this year’s major awards contenders.
The “greatest living director” shared the first trailer for the film at CinemaCon, the annual conference of theater owners that’s been taking place this week. Based on David Grann’s bestselling book, “Killers of the Flower Moon” is a true story, one that pulls back the curtain on a series of murders of wealthy Osage people that took place in the early 1920s after major oil deposits were discovered on their land. It also looks at how the newly formed FBI investigated the killings.

This post contains spoilers for "Attack on Titan."
Many TV shows become different as they go on. New characters are introduced, others depart, and status quos are torn down. What's rarer is that a show uproots its whole premise. And yet, that's what "Attack on Titan" does.
A bombshell twist at the end of season 3 reveals the show's setting is only a drop in the bucket of a much larger, much different world. Season 4, adapting chapters 91 to 139 of Hajime Isayama's original manga, explores that world. Along the way, the story changes from a purely black-and-white conflict about people slaying monsters into a man-versus-man story. Whereas before the heroes were fighting for survival, the conflicts of season 4 were more abstract, rooted in prejudice spanning generations and the resultant cycle of revenge.
As the "Attack on Titan" final season approaches its end, it's time to ask: was this change for better or worse?...

Seminal reggae act Toots and the Maytals delivered an uplifting rendition of their 1975 classic, “Funky Kingston,” on The Tonight Show Wednesday.

“Whitney” is the second documentary about the life and death of Whitney Houston to come along in a year, and it’s also the second one that’s entrancingly well-done. Here’s the thing about Whitney Houston: She was so incandescent that if you sat through nine documentaries about her, you’d probably experience, each time, what I did during the early scenes of “Whitney” — the hope that somehow, this time, the beautiful enraptured young singer in front of you will find a way to defeat her demons, that they won’t drag her down, that the story will turn out different.

Cocaine addiction, of course, is an insidious monster, but Houston, even after rehab, kept returning to it, as if she wanted to destroy herself. To see her life story is always,...

All hail Queen Cookie Lyon of the Empire, whose return from winter hiatus was also a pleasing return to form for Fox's flagship musical drama.
I generally enjoyed Star's first season, despite it being maligned by many critics.
But Empire's spring premiere was a reminder that its little sister show is just that: a little sister who has a lot to learn from her more experienced elder.
Even in its weakest moments, Empire manages to remain addictive thanks to its charismatic performers, catchy musical numbers that would fit right in on pop radio, and of course, enough drama to fill several daytime soap operas.
"Sound & Fury" stuck to that tried-and-true formula. The result was an hour of television that never ceased to entertain, full of moments both hysterically funny and intensely emotional.

Music documentaries are a genre unto their own – sometimes they give you a glimpse behind the scenes of your favourite band, and sometimes they’re about someone you’ve never heard about who become your favourite band. With that in mind, here’s a rundown of the Top 10 Best Music Documentaries of all time:
Anvil! The Story Of Anvil
An opening of Heavy Metal icons such Slash, Lemmy and Lars Ulrich singing the praises of a band you’ve never heard of makes you think it’s all just a Spinal Tap style spoof. It’s a heart-warming underdog tale of never giving up your dream.

For many “Arthur” fans the 1996 animated children’s show was a part of their childhood, or in Stephen Colbert’s case: a show that he enjoyed with his kids. Now, the “Late Show” host is paying homage to the series by performing the “Believe in Yourself” theme song with original singer Ziggy Marley, Jon Batiste and Chance The Rapper in a delightful new video.
The clip begins with Colbert in his office and then hears Jon singing the words to the song. As they reminisce about watching the show, Colbert then takes his daytime nap and in his dreams performs a new version of “Believe in Yourself” with the trio.
Marley is seen playing the guitar alongside Batiste who plays the melodica. Chance the Rapper then joins by singing a couple of verses, while Colbert happily walks down an animated street and snaps pictures with a cartoon camera.
