The most offensive sitcom of the past five decades!
GrandpaBunche17 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
How does one reconcile the simultaneous feelings of being appalled and fascinated? I honestly do not know, and thanks to an accident of channel-surfing I must now ponder that question.

I hadn't heard word one about it this series, but I came across it while flipping around the channels last night and was horrified by what I witnessed. At first it looked like just another of the terrible "black" shows vomited onto the airwaves by the MyNetwork — formerly the UPN, so that should give you a clue as to what kind of programming I'm bitching about — but as I watched, a mind-altering tableux unfolded within the stale framework of a "fish out of water" comedy along the lines of Who's the Boss?, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire, or The Beverly Hillbillies. In the space of one half hour I beheld a parade of ethnic stereotypes so egregious that it made me wonder if I'd fallen into an alternate universe where they still allowed this kind of pre-1960's minstrelsy to flourish, and had somehow found a away to resurrect Stepin Fetchit in the form of Flavor Flav.

Mister Flav plays Calvester Hill, a cartoonish, over-the-top hip-hop caricature who has recently gotten out of jail after taking the rap to prevent his "good" younger brother from ruining his much more promising life after crashing his car. Once out, Calvester calls in the favor owed him by his brother — who is now a bourgie real estate gazillionaire with a white wife — and promptly moves into his brother's mansion, thereby bringing his streetwise ways and sensibilities into conflict with what is perceived as his brother's disconnect from his own "blackness," as well as opening the door to his thuggish pals and former fellow prison inmates. In the first episode, Calvester must fend off the unwanted presence of "Pumpkin" (Tiny "Zeus" Lister), a hulking violent offender who protected Calvester during his days behind bars, who now seeks payback in the form of post-incarceration prison-style man-on-man lovin'. Yes, you read that right: a sitcom that seeks to wring laughs from a gargantuan black man set on raping his former cellmate, and said former cellmate's outlandish efforts to avoid being sundered by a huge wedge of ebony soul pole.

That setup is bad enough, but the icing on the cake is the parade of broad ethnic clichés. The black people present are either "buppies" or hip-hop "playas" and blaxploitation stock characters, complete with pimp walks, gold chains, and flamboyant threads, and as for the other races about the only offensive stereotype not present was a Jew with a gigantic hook-nose and Smith Brothers beard who controls all aspects of the media and lusts after hot, blonde shiksas. But the true standout here is the Chinese cook (Emily Kuroda) who yammers in embarrassing pidgin English and sports fashions seemingly designed by Mao Tse-Tung. I know she's an actor and is looking to earn some cash, but this isn't the way to do that and maintain one's dignity. And as I predicted nearly twenty years ago, without Public Enemy and Chuck D, Flavor Flav has degenerated into the living embodiment of the classic minstrel show "coon." I say this while speaking as a lifelong black person, so please don't think I'm saying this out of any attempt at using ethnic slurs for my own amusement.

But, you may ask, is any of this funny? The answer to that is an unequivocal "no." I'm not alone in my assessment, as can be found in online articles. As for me, I plan to regularly tape this atrocity, just so I'll have it for posterity; no one believes me when I tell them about Homeboys in Outer Space (1996-1997), a show I wish I'd taped just to prove how extra-stupid it was, and I won't make that mistake twice.

This show is an insult to the American people
unlearnc14 January 2009
I came across this show tonight while channel surfing and at first thought that it was a comedy sketch show along the lines of MadTV. I was willing to watch for a few minutes in hopes of a punch line or that they would end this horrible train wreck and move on to a funny sketch. Alas, my hopes were diminished as it became obvious that it was in fact an actual show.

The plot is vaguely reminiscent of "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" in that it stars a rap star as a family member out of place in his rich relatives home. But that's where the similarity stops. The acting is absolutely atrocious and the jokes just aren't funny. In fact, the only "joke" is that this network (My Network TV) would allow this embodiment of the perpetuation of horrible stereotypes of black people to be broadcast. I can't even begin to describe how offensive it is on every conceivable level.

I sincerely hope that no one watches this and I encourage everyone to contact this network and let them know that America is tired of this "Blacksploitation" media.

NICE SHOW; LOW RATINGS
ottogrimsley23 October 2018
I did like this show when I was young. My favourite actors of this series were Kelly Perine of "One On One" & "Between Brothers" & the main star Flavor Flav. It was cool because Flavor Flav's character Calvester was a thuggish man who came to live with his younger brother WInston & his family after he was released in prison for something that was NOT even his fault. & he was hilarious for doing some of the things that he did. It's a shame that Under One Roof's ratings were so low that MyNetworkTV (formerly known as UPN) decided to cancel it after 13 episodes. Plus I so liked the promos where it would show the MyNetworkTV logo with either the "Cali Cal" chain or a hat with a pair of sunglasses. I even liked the promos where the main theme plays. My favourite character was Calvester because he was cool & he was hilarious.

Hilarious!

This show is so hilarious, Flavor Flav makes it wonderful! He is so awesome, I am one of his fans! I especially love his catchphrase "Flavor Flav! Yeah, boy!".

Flavor's character Calvester Hill is my #1 favorite character! Calvester is also hilarious and awesome like his portrayer Flavor! Hopefully, this show will be brought back with brand-new seasons and episodes! I do not even know why it was taken off the air in the first place! I do not even understand why people criticize this show! What is so stupid about it? In my opinion, Flavor Flav does not make the show worse, but rather improves it!

Anyway, yeah, I just wish the show was still airing with more episodes and did not get negative responses.

The Town Mouse meets The Country Mouse.
johnnymacbest1 April 2008
I caught a sneak-peek of this show on cable last night and to be frank it was quite funny, though never breaking new ground like other TV sitcoms have done in recent years such as Two and a Half Men and "The New Adventures of Old Christine". The Cosby Show was notable in that it introduced characters that neither were caricatures or stereotypes though later in the early nineties, the genre went "Hog Wild" when "Martin" and of course the outrageously funny, raunchy, and intellectually-devoid "Married...With Children" rolled along the airwaves in all of its gut-busting glory(sadly, this was at a time when the genre was fresh and exuberantly arousing. "sniff"). As for the show itself, its premise is familiar; think of it as a urban, hip version of "The Town Mouse Meets The Country Mouse". Here are the similarities: One is a conservative, wealthy, well-mannered, "Clark Kentish" dude and the other is an ex-con from an opposite side of the...United States of America. Now with these two characters, you know there's gonna be a "culture clash" of sorts which gives way to many outrageous situations and goofy mayhem that inevitably will occur throughout the course of this new show.

Fresh off from his cable-only stint "Flava of Love" former Public Enemy front-man Flavor Flav gets to flex his comedic muscle alongside Kelly Perine ( of One on One fame). Since this is a preview, I'm not sure about the two female characters, though one of them is likely to be one of the main character's love interest which makes for a romantic subplot among other things. Though the premise isn't nothing new and the writing is a little spotty in places, I think the show has a real chance if the writers are willing to take it further into untouched territory in terms of its content. Having never seen Flavor Flav in a comedic sitcom (well, there WAS a lot of humor on Flavor of Love) this may be something special, if not a solid addition to an otherwise lukewarm career. Check it out if you're curious or fan of Flavor Flav.

Outrageous, Hilarious!

I'd only ever seen a bit here and there once or twice of "Flavor of Love" which lead me to believe that the Flava Flav phenomenon was something i had no interest in. Well tonight, that has changed. I happened upon an episode of this show and LAUGHED AS I HAVE NOT IN AGES!!!

I could not believe how offbeat and zany and sometimes kind of wrong it is, but in a great and, dare I say, ingenious sort of way. It's so over the top & hilariously written and Flava Flav just lights up every scene.

I don't know what show these other reviewers have been seeing, but people are always more likely to take the time to complain about something than to praise something they enjoy.

I've only seen one and a half episodes, but I AM HOOKED! I'm not usually home on Wednesday nights, but I am going to make a point of re-arranging my weekly schedule to catch it from now on. it's THAT funny.

It's funny too, i thought this show premiered in 2006 or 2007 - I remember seeing the ads for it - seems so long ago.

I can't wait for the DVDs!

Please don't cancel this show - it must go on!
