Old fashioned Melodramatic film a decent film to watch on weekend for timepass
aprilpriya-5870826 March 2022
An average film to watch on weekend for timepass..its too dated like a script from 80s or 90s..it has sweet and fun monents but otherwise its a melodrama like a Malayalam serial..nothing extra ordinary or excellent about this film..it lags and lacks little bit punch..jokes said in the film sounded bland.. Also old school mentality where Biju Menon's character separates from his wife because she chose abortion and he only accepts her when she agrees to his terms

Saiju Kurups character was more likeable.. chemistry between the actors was good..All actors have done their role well..songs are sweet and simple..dont expect much and watch it casually..its a 90s melodrama.

May be feel good, May be Not
maxisnaresh20 March 2022
This is one of those feel good movies which some may like and some may not. There are some cliches and there are some fresh subplots here.

Overall, I didn't like the movie. It neither entertained me nor it gave me a feel good vibe.

But worth watching in OTT with family.

Emotional family drama
judesachinjohn327421 March 2022
An emotional family drama... with bits of cliche and maybe a touch too much of song time.... Nevertheless there are scenes and characters in the movie that impressed like for instance Saiju Kurup character was great.

Good movie with a message to those who don't find time to spend with family. Good story and not so bad acting. Raghunath Palleri has acted well which is worth mentioning. A must see clean movie one should not miss.

Simple Beautiful family feel good after long time
SPHariSP20 March 2022
The title is apt, it's simple and beautiful. It's a family feel good movie with light fun and emotions and has done justice to being good at that. Movie should connect lot of people somewhere, about relationships management in thier own life

We have seen movies like kapoor and sons in Bollywood , it's not a copy of that but the theme is same.

Had low expectations about director Madhu warrior , but I was wrong, he has done his job very well.

A wannabe feel-good drama with no soul or nuance!
nidhunmoviebuff23 March 2022
The template of a dysfunctional family coming together to resolve and celebrate their differences has now become an oft-repeated one in Malayalam cinema. While there have been spectacular successes like "Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela" (2017) and "#Home" (2021), the genre is also susceptible to abject failures like "Bro Daddy" (2022) when the core story lacks sincerity and depth. "Lalitham Sundaram", while being an honest attempt with good intentions, reduces to only a passable watch due to the same lack in depth of characterization and any real freshness in the plotline.

We are introduced to a squabbling family consisting of three siblings-played by Biju Menon, Manju Warrier and Anu Mohan who get together at their hillside ancestral home to commemorate the death anniversary of their beloved mother. With issues of abandonment, rivalry and problems in their respective marriages to comprehend with, how the three of them come to terms with spending time with each other and repairing their broken relationships form the rest of this run-of-the-mill story.

It was definitely a delight to watch Biju Menon and Manju Warrier combine on-screen again, with the superstar pair having last appeared together in the iconic "Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu" way back in 1998. The gifted actors in them find the same chemistry that delighted us in classics like "Pranayavarnangal" (1998) and "Innalekalillathae" (1997) and their back-and-forth sibling rivalry offer up some of the most genuine and organically funny sequences in the film.

The direction by Manju Warrier's brother, Madhu Warrier shows all the inexperience of a debut director, with the narrative often diverging into irrelevant sub-plots on the one hand while not building enough layering and background to the core familial conflicts that should have formed the backbone of the storytelling. The sympathy and relatability the director planned on bringing to the on-screen family never materializes fully due to the disjointed nature of the plot progression and the artificiality in many of the characters' interactions with each other.

Bijibal's heartwarming music offers some solace as the bungling narrative moves forward, offering up more narrative impact than any of the inane dialogues written by screenwriter Pramod Mohan. Because of the same, the feelings and conflicts of the characters remain at surface-level, rarely giving the impression to the viewer that they have any real depth or realism to be taken seriously. While films like "#Home" thrived on authenticity and relatable elements, "Lalitham Sundaram" works more like a soap opera where you just see characters enact on-screen, without ever resonating with any of their struggles or motivations.

Except for Sudheesh and Saiju Kurup, the supporting cast was pretty disappointing with Anu Mohan, Deepti Sati and Reghunath Paleri's performances coming across as forced and wooden. Despite very little screen time, Sudheesh again illustrates how under-utilized his acting prowess is within the industry and hopefully, this is another wake-up call to Kerala's film-makers to offer up longer roles to the 2020 Kerala State Award winner for Best Character Acting (For "Bhoomiyile Manohara Swakaryam" and "Ennivar").

The politics of the film is also dubious with the career-oriented lady CEO character played by Manju Warrier guilt-tripped for that most ridiculous of reasons -"not finding enough time for family" while the same reasoning is deemed as a wife being unreasonable when directed towards Biju Menon's character. Double standards much?

Ultimately, "Lalitham Sundaram" has several high points, especially with Biju Menon and Sudheesh's rousing performances and soulful monologues but doesn't gel well together to make a cohesive whole. Manju Warrier's role was criminally and inexplicably under-written, giving minimal room for the performer in her to shine. I also wish there were more combination sequences between her and Biju Menon because that was what the audiences had turned up to watch the film for.

Set your expectations right and this might be a watchable timepass family drama, that entertains in parts.

Bore Movie
samjithin19 March 2022
This is a below average movie, with some bore and poor acting from actor who played Biju Menon's little brother

There is no story at all, for the sake of making a movie they made something, even the music is bad.

Too simplistic, too stale, and not beautiful!
surajpnair20 March 2022
The film tries a lot to infuse all the emotions for us to relate and move us within, but it falls flat owing to lack of central core conflict, poor characters, mediocre performances and most importantly trivial plot points.

From a plot perspective, the filmmaker tries to enforce a concept of family reunion under the threat of emotional harassment. The family extends their stay just because they saw their mother dying on a video wherein the ailing mother came up with her wish list for her children to follow year on year, and yet this has been told with sheer conviction and to add to that the filmmaker has been fascinated by the 90s era and looks like the 90s era is what he tried to applied to today's world and it was not worth it.

The filmmaker also tries to boast how progressive today's world has evolved to where women & men are happy to exchange their prejudiced roles, but it appears to be more of a gimmick deep down the message that came out to me from the filmmaker is that family rides on emotional blackmailing to get things done for vested interests.

The characters are etched at the surface and there is no depth added, leaving them as simple as superficial they can be. Even the actors have not full justice to their characters though they seem to try hard with not enough research and not enough inputs from the makers.

The lead actors Biju Menon & Sudheesh were able to connect at random times to evoke some empathy towards their plight, rest others behaved at a superficial level.

Melodramatic and cringe worthy
JPEI646 April 2022
Largely predictable fare. Overly emotional and over dramatic. Most of the 'happy family' moments make you cringe. Travel back to the mediocre 70's family dramas. There are a few worthwhile moments but few and far in between. The makers have stuck to a tried tested and flogged to death script and storyline. The only performance worth mentioning is Manju who lifts the movie in places. She also looks ravishing. Strictly one time watch ( provided nothing else is on) if you fast forward the sermons and the drama (happy and sad).

dreamandaspire19 March 2022
This helps us see the simple joys of life in a very uncomplicated straightforward way. Excellent direction I really enjoyed it and brought tears to my eyes. If anyone says this is the one out of 10, I would suspect that it is dileep's army.

Poorly made, cringey slice of life film that wastes the talent of some incredible actors!
tkmce200821 March 2022
If you know it's releasing on Hotstar, then you know how the movie is going to turn out. Lalitham Sundaram features some very talented actors but this slice of life film is so dated and juvenile that you can't bear to sit through it despite it's relatively short runtime.

Lalitham Sundaram is the story of three siblings, who have grown apart with age but reunite at their family home for their mother's death anniversary.

I am sucker for any film that has Saiju Kurup & Biju Menon in the cast. But Lalitham Sundaram ruined that for me. This film that clearly is a derivative of Kapoor & Sons doesn't get anything right. The acting & dialogue delivery is very childish and cringey. And the plot is set in the 90s. Biju Menon, Saiju Kurup & Manju Warrier are seasoned actors but they seem out of place.

Produced by Manju Warrier & directed by her brother, Madhu Warrier, Lalitham Sundaram could have been much better given the talent onscreen. And as for misleading audiences, the poster seemed to portray this film as something more wacky.

Flawed. But A Decent film
afsalmd-1513219 March 2022
First of all, I don't understand the low rating this movie has been getting. It's not as bad as they say. Manju ma'am and Biju Menon gives justice to their roles along with other casts. Good acting performances combined with technical aspects like fine cinematography and music makes this one a decent watch. Recommended!

Oldschool, boring
Jithindurden25 March 2022
20 years ago maybe this would have worked pretty well. Even then, the script has its issues and the direction has all the problems that can be expected from a debutant. The charm of all the brilliant actors was the only thing that was going on with the film but even that isn't good enough to save it from the total lack of cinematic sense of the director. The poster looks way more interesting than anything in the film. Madhu Warrier was not a successful actor and doesn't seem to be a good director either. But that may not hinder his future as a director as long as his sister Manju stays a big name in the industry as an actress and they can make movies by exploiting the possibilities of adverts subtly stuffed inside the film like this.
