In Stuart Baird's 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis," Tom Hardy plays Shinzon, a human clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), grown in a lab by the dastardly spies in the Romulan Empire. When their clone plot didn't quite turn out the way that they wanted, the Romulans disavowed Shinzon's existence and sent him as a young boy to be enslaved in a Reman mine. The Remans were a cousin species of the Romulans that had been enslaved for many generations. Shinzon would grow up among the goblin-looking Remans, sharing their plight. Perhaps possessed of Picard's knack for leadership, Shizon would eventually lead a Reman uprising against the Romulans. "Nemesis" was the first time Trekkies ever caught a glimpse of the Remans. Shinzon's massive warship, the Scimitar, would be staffed entirely by Reman officers.
Most notably, Shinzon's unnamed right-hand man, a Reman Voiceroy, would be played by Ron Perlman, an...

Tomu Uchida’s Mad Fox (1962) is currently available on Blu-ray From Arrow Academy
In stark contrast to the monochrome naturalism of his earlier masterwork Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji, visionary master director Tomu Uchida took inspiration from Bunraku and kabuki theater for arguably his strangest and most lavishly cinematic film, The Mad Fox.
Amidst a mythically-depicted medieval Japan, a court astrologer foretells a great disturbance that threatens to split the realm in two. His bitter and treacherous wife conspires to have the astrologer killed, as well as their adopted daughter, Sakaki. The astrologer s master apprentice, Yasuna, who was in love with Sakaki, is driven mad with grief and escapes to the countryside. There, he encounters Sakaki s long-lost twin, Kuzunoha, and the pair meet a pack of ancient fox spirits in the woods, whose presence may be the key to restoring Yasuna s sanity, and in turn bringing peace to the fracturing nation.

Billed as a neo-noir espionage thriller, Moshe's script will see Hartnett as the leader of a black ops mercenary group who returns to Naples to seek revenge and reunite with the woman he loves after being betrayed by his team and left for dead in Africa. If you listen closely, you can almost hear the elevator pitch on this one. It’s like Jaws, right? But, it’s in the forest – with a giant bear, guys with guns, and a token ballsy blonde to keep the ladies happy. Sure, it sounds like Into The Grizzly Maze basically writes itself, but the most cursory of looks at the newly released trailer suggests that this might actually have a very healthy B-movie pulse to it. What else could account for the presence of the legendary Scott Glenn, and Academy Award winner Billy Bob Thornton?

This spring Josh Hartnett returns to our collective consciousness in Showtime's "Penny Dreadful," and it has been a long time since we've seen him anything. The past four of five years has seen the actor drift with indies nobody saw ("Stuck Between Stations," "August," "Girl Walks Into A Bar"), genre fare that no one saw ("Bunraku," "I Come With The Rain") and troubled international blockbusters ("Singularity"). But perhaps his career might've been different, if he had made some different choices. In an interview with Details, the actor is up front about turning down some major roles, including Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns," early in his career. "Spider-Man was something we talked about. Batman was another one. But I somehow knew those roles had potential to define me, and I didn't want that. I didn't want to be labeled as Superman for the rest of my career. I was maybe 22, but I saw the danger,...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Wow. Josh Hartnett. Haven’t heard that name in a while. Well you’ll be hearing a little bit more from Mr. Hartnett, because he’s just been cast as the male lead in Showtime’s “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”-esque show “Penny Dreadful”. Hartnett will be joined by the lovely Eva Green (“300: Rise of an Empire”) on the show, from screenwriter John Logan (“Gladiator”) and “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes. The “psycho-sexual horror series” (whatever that means) will premiere on cable network Showtime with an 8-episode first-season, and will find Hartnett playing Ethan Chandler, described as “a man of action and daring who isn’t afraid of violence. He’s charming and brash but there are demons behind his eyes. He’s more complicated than he likes to admit.” The last movie I saw Hartnett in was 2010′s “Bunraku”, which was pretty good, but he hasn’t really done...

Long ago, in the before time, I put forth five names to replace Ben Affleck as Matt Murdock in a "Daredevil" movie. Fast-forward two years and two months later and, yes, we have a director, but we still do not have a Man Without Fear.
Recently, David Slade said that there is no "Daredevil" update at the moment, with progress moving slowly on the loose adaptation of Frank Miller's "Born Again" arc. To do our small part in speeding things along, I thought we should revisit the idea of casting Murdock for the "Daredevil" reboot. Mostly new names this time around, with one of the old guys hanging on because he's still my personal favorite.
Read on for "Daredevil" casting suggestions, round two!

Josh Hartnett has left CAA, and he has been making the rounds of agencies looking for new representation. Even though they might be unexcited by his recent movies like Bunraku and Girl Walks Into A Bar, the agencies are all over him. Who can blame them? This is a strapping young guy who can act and is only 33. I thought he was going to be a big star when he made Pearl Harbor and especially Black Hawk Down. While occasional films reminded of his potential — how great was Hartnett in 30 Days Of Night, maybe the coolest vampire movie since From Dusk Till Dawn? – for the most part he has leaned toward indie, artsy fare. I can still remember in the early 2000s when Hartnett was offered the Superman role by Warner Bros in a three-picture deal that potentially could have paid him $100 million. He turned it down because he didn...

SXSW did just that on Tuesday night, honoring the graffiti drama "Gimme the Loot" and the rock documentary "Beware of Mr. Baker," about Cream drummer Ginger Baker. Fun! Each week within this column we strive to pair the latest in theatrical releases to worthwhile titles currently streaming on Netflix Instant Watch. This week we offer alternatives to Safe House, The Vow, & Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D.

But if this isn’t enough to satisfying your thirst for action, adventure and romance, you’re in luck as we’ve got some choice titles that are Now Streaming.
Ryan Reynolds is a desk-bound secret agent thrown into the fray when a disgraced ex-operative (Denzel Washington) barges into his safe house, throwing his whole world into free-for-all. Vera Farmiga co-stars.

It's been a rough year for Demi Moore. Her highly publicized split with husband Ashton Kutcher following his cheating scandal led to a dramatic weight loss that received plenty of media press. After many months of the public focusing on her impending divorce, it seemed as though things were looking up for the 49-year-old actress when she signed on to the upcoming film "Lovelace," which stars Amanda Seyfried and Peter Saarsgard. But after being hospitalized on Monday for exhaustion and since being checked into rehab, it turns out that she won't be a part of the movie after all.
Moore's representative confirmed to People that she will no longer be playing female rights activist Gloria Steinem in the upcoming movie. This was the only upcoming movie on Moore's slate. So what does this mean for her film career?
It's unclear just how big a part the Steinem role is in "Lovelace.

Riddick's a wanted man throughout the galaxy, and the latest bad guy hot on his trail could be the famous Spanish actor Jordi Molla.
Molla would play yet another mercenary hunting down Riddick (Vin Diesel) on that crusty prison planet of Crematoria. As Santana, Molla would head up a group of mercs on the hunt for our eyeball-enhanced ex-con.
Us audiences might be more familiar with Molla's work in the bananas actioner "Bunraku" and the less bananas Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz vehicle "Knight and Day," as well as "Colombiana" and "Blow."
Apparently, there are a lot of folks who want a piece of Riddick in the next installment of the franchise. Yesterday, news broke that "BSG" alum Katee Sackhoff has signed on the dotted line to play a mercenary as well, although it's not clear if she'll be part of Santana's crew or working on her own.

With the Brooklyn-based indie band Grizzly Bear providing the perfect score for Derek Cianfrance‘s drama Blue Valentine, we’ve been eager to get news on who will take care of his crime film The Place Beyond the Pines. It looks like it will get a bit more edge, with the announcement of a composer today via press release.
Faith No More frontman and Mr. Bungle singer Mike Patton has signed on to do the score. No other details provided, but we can look towards his work on Crank: High Voltage, as well as providing songs to films like Black Hawk Down. Patton is also no stranger to other elements of film production, providing narration for last year’s Bunraku and work on I Am Legend. It is a surprising choice, but Cianfrance is said to be a big fan and I look forward to seeing how he fits in here.

Star Trek Sequel Casting Word
Will he? Won’t he? Will he? Won’t he? That has been the song dance we fans of Star Trek have been performing over the latest news that Benicio Del Toro would Not be acting in the highly anticipated sequel. The quite infamous role Del Toro was rumored to be about to play was that of Khan. Director J.J. Abrams has confirmed that Del Toro, The Wolfman actor, is out. Now we have some insight into who may replace him.
Variety suggests two male actors may be next in line for the role of a villain in Star Trek 2. They say Paramount is circling Edgar Ramirez and Jordi Molla.
Ramirez starred in the Golden Globe nominated miniseries, Carlos, as well as Vantage Point, and Ché. Insiders say he is expected to perform a screen test via Skype for J.J. sometime this week.

Now that they couldn't get Benicio Del Toro, for whatever reason that fell through, J.J. Abrams is looking elsewhere to cast his villain in the Star Trek sequel, and Variety says he's got two other frontrunners. The primary one is Édgar Ramírez (seen above), a Venezuelan actor on the rise from The Bourne Ultimatum, Vantage Point, Che and Wrath of Titans. The other is Spaniard Jordi Mollà, from Bad Boys II, Bunraku, Colombiana. Unfortunately, like with all casting news on this, nothing is confirmed yet and testing is still underway. But does the focus on ethnicity mean this is still Khan that he's casting for? It has to be, right? Since this news is not confirmed yet, we can't say anyone is cast, but the process is underway to find someone, as they're still aiming to start shooting early next year. In the Vulture post about Del Toro's talks falling through,...

It may not be the most exciting week for new movies on DVD and Blu-ray, but there are still a few worthy purchases out there if you feel so inclined. Disney and Pixar will easily roll over the home video release charts with Cars 2 even though it's probably the first Pixar movie in quite a while that movie geeks may want to leave out of their collections. Other major studio releases include Crazy, Stupid, Love starring Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling and Water for Elephants starring Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon. Some not so major releases in stores today are Joel Schumacher's Trespass starring Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman, Bunraku starring Woody Harrelson and Errol Morris' latest non-fiction masterwork Tabloid. We've also got Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Hook and Scrooged on Blu-ray, but let's face it, the biggest release of the week is definitely Uncharted 3! What...

An old tale is told in a visually bold manner in Guy Moshe's Bunraku. Revenge is always a good starting point for any story, and in this case, it helps the odds as two men, a drifter played by Josh Hartnett, and a young Japanese played by pop star Gackt, seek vengeance from The Woodcutter, played by Ron Perlman. Bunraku takes a lot of chances, the film is staged in such a way that the viewer will either jump on board or become disillusioned very quickly. I found myself in the former camp, after aligning myself with the illusion. Arc Entertainment bring Bunraku to Blu-ray and DVD in a very capable digital presentation with the stylized visuals holding their own and the sound keeping up...

The fine people at Arc Entertinament and XLRator Media have provided Twitch readers with the opportunity to win one of six signed one sheets from Guy Moshe's neo-noir/western/action/samurai film, Bunraku! The posters are signed by director Guy Moshe and star Ron Perlman and will be shipped in poster tubes, unfolded to you, the winner!Bunraku is a hyper-stylized post-apocalyptic fantasy film that meshes elements from different avant garde film and theater styles to create something new. The film is very daring visually, and brings together a pretty damned impressive main and supporting cast, including: Josh Hartnett, Gackt, Ron Perlman, Kevin McKidd, Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore, and Shun Sugata. What do you have to do to win? That's easy! Just send me an e-mail with Bunraku Poster...

The star-studded experimental film which stars Josh Harnett stars Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson & Ron Perlman and made it's debut at last year's Toronto Film Festival will be available to take home on November 1st. The Film For an indie film to reach cult status it needs to make a splash, either by being really good (Donnie Darko) or really bad (The Room); landing somewhere in the middle just won’t cut it. That’s the trouble that director Guy Moshe has run into with his second feature film, Bunraku. His visually exciting b-movie doesn’t commit to one tone; It’s too serious to be a farce, but too silly to be a drama. The result is bafflingly uneven, an all-style-no-substance thrill ride, that’s as dull as it is entertaining. Equal parts Yojimbo, and Tim Burton’s Batman, the story takes...

Quentin Tarantino has a lot to answer for. The success of both his Kill Bill films has in turn opened the floodgates for a number of copycat movies to emerge in recent years attempting to blend the genres of the Japanese samurai film with American Westerns all with varying degrees of success. The latest to join the list is Bunraku, released on Blu-ray and DVD today, written and directed by Guy Moshe who made the film on a budget of just $25million.
A mysterious drifter (Josh Hartnett) and an ardent young Japanese warrior Yoshi, played by Gackt in his international film debut, both arrive in a town that is terrorised by outrageous and virulent criminals. Each is obsessed with his separate mission, and guided by the wisdom of The Bartender (Woody Harrelson) at the Horseless Horseman Saloon, the two eventually join forces to bring down the corrupt and contemptuous reign...

There are so few films that get made these days in which a director, writer, and cast genuinely stretch themselves to try and make something different. Bunraku is one of those films. And it is awesome almost beyond words.
Writer-director Guy Moshe clearly had a vision for his film, and together with a fantastic cast led by Josh Hartnett and international newcomer Gackt (though he’s already a famous Japanese musician/actor) and supported by Woody Harrelson, Kevin McKidd, Ron Perlman, and Demi Moore, he saw the realization of that vision into an utterly creative film that just doesn’t stop giving. From start to finish, it’s an explosive film that will blow your mind.
Much like Sin City has been praised for the creativity of its production and has gained cult status, Bunraku is just as worthy of such praise and status, and not only because Hartnett is...

★★★★☆ The increasingly popular hybrid sub-genre of the martial arts-western gets another entry in the form of Guy Moshe's second feature, Bunraku (2010) - which stars Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, Ron Perlman and Demi Moore - although the term doesn't really come close to describing the cultural blend of influences that the director has combined into this film. There's also a heavy shade of noir, a boatload of expressionist set design and even hints of the musical genre.

Director: Guy Moshe. Review: Adam Wing. Remember when you were at school, no matter how clued up you thought you were, there was always a group of kids that little bit cooler than you. Most of us, let’s be honest here, were probably clueless when it came to being ‘in fashion’, and we always looked up to that gang of kids that ruled the common room, talked to girls, and had a social life that didn’t involve fat little plumbers and spiky blue hedgehogs. If Sin City and Kill Bill are the cool kids in the classroom, that would surely make Bunraku you and I. With a colour scheme that makes Gok Wan’s wardrobe look positively dull, Guy Moshe’s samurai-western-videogame-film noir aims for Sin City cool, but comes across like Cool World’s baby brother let loose with a pack of crayons. Roundups on some of the more interesting titles opening this weekend have been updated through today: The Last Picture Show, 50/50, Margaret, Take Shelter and My Joy — see, too, Daniel Kasman's review — as well as another on the documentaries.
"Hillbilly horror is nothing new," writes Cheryl Eddy in the San Francisco Bay Guardian. "Some might mark its heyday as the 1970s, a decade containing Deliverance (1972), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Hills Have Eyes (1977), and I Spit On Your Grave (1978). Others might point to Herschell Gordon Lewis's immortal Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964), probably cinema's most persuasive example of why Yankees road-tripping below the Mason-Dixon Line should never, for any reason, detour off the main highway…. But what if, asks Eli Craig's Tucker and Dale vs Evil, you were totally misjudging those sinister-seeming whiskey-tango yokels? What if, despite being a little unwashed and fond of sharp objects and power tools, they...

“Bunraku,” director Guy Moshe’s latest picture, is, as leading man Gackt so eloquently (and confusingly) described to MTV News in an exclusive interview, “a Cowboy meets Samurai meets Mafia action flick. It’s an action-packed movie unlike any other, mixing various genres in the style of Japanese puppetry.” Confusing, yes, but pretty much spot on: no matter how you slice it, “Bunraku” is nothing if not unique.
In a future where bullets have been outlawed and hand-to-hand combat has become the primary method of conflict resolution, the ruthless Nicola the Woodcutter (Ron Perlman) rules the world east of the Atlantic with the aid of nine deadly assassins. But Nicola has a target on his back as well: a Drifter (Josh Hartnett) wanders into town with a thirst for whiskey and a hunger for blood, while the samurai Yoshi (Gackt) also comes calling with his sights set on the Woodcutter.

Since exploding onto the scene in 1998, Josh Hartnett has been working hard to stretch his creative muscles and amplify his range. Hartnett stars alongside Woody Harrelson, Ron Perlman and Demi Moore in the fantasy/action epic, Bunraku, which tells the story of a group of outcasts who band together to take down a ruthless dictator in a world where guns have been outlawed. The Guy Moshe-directed film has been enjoying a run on the festival circuit over the course of the last year, and today it opens in theaters, giving us the opportunity to chat with the film's star. Movies.com: Normally in an interview like this I’d start by asking what attracted you to the project. But given Bunraku’s wildly imaginative story and unique mix of styles and genres, I think...

Years ago, Woody Harrelson proved that white men can jump, and now he's going to prove that they can rob banks pretty well too.
After scoring some serious goodwill for his off-the-chains performances in movies like "The Messenger," "Zombieland," and the recent Toronto Film Festival hit "Rampart," the one-time TV bartender is on a bit of a hot-streak, and what better way to capitalize on it than by playing a bank-robbing magician?
According to Movieweb, Harrelson has joined the cast of Summit Entertainment's "Now You See Me" for Frenchie director Louis Leterrier ("The Incredible Hulk" and "Clash of the Titans").
He'll play a famous hypnotist named Merrit Osbourne who joins an elite gang of stage illusionists and tricksters called the Four Horsemen who pull bank heists during their performances, giving the loot away to their audiences.
Cannabis-connoisseur Harrelson will re-team with his zombie killing buddy Jesse Eisenberg in the picture,...

Director Guy Moshe's "Bunraku" isn't all about fighting, but you could certainly be forgiven for thinking otherwise. Set in a future where bullets have been outlawed and conflicts are started and finished with fists, "Bunraku" follows two men — a Drifter played by Josh Hartnett and a samurai, Yoshi, played by Gackt — out on a deadly mission with a mutual goal… one that's destined to end in blood.

Bunraku’s premise involves a level of fanboy wankery that makes Sucker Punch look restrained. The film, written and directed by Guy Moshe (of 2006’s child-trafficking drama Holly), is set in a post-nuclear-war world in which guns have been banned and all of civilization’s still-copious violence is carried out with swords, fists, and the occasional axe. The city in which the action takes place is oppressed by a vicious gang led by a dreadlocked Ron Perlman, “the most powerful man east of the Atlantic.” Among his underlings: nine assassins who must challenge each other to move up in ...

Ron Perlman is an actor whose face is immediately recognizable by even the most casual cinema fan. His performances in a wide range of films such as Quest For Fire, Cronos, The City Of Lost Children, Alien: Resurrection, Blade 2, the Hellboy films, Sons Of Anarchy, and the current Drive, to name but a few, make one hell of a filmography, and Mr. Perlman, size and all, remains of the most subtle and well-defined performers in cinema. He is, to put it mildly, "an actor's actor." On Friday, September 30th, he will add another iconic character to his repertoire with the axe-wielding overlord, Nicola, in Guy Moshe's Bunraku. Since Joseph Gordon-Levitt is titillating you with cancer this week in 50/50 and Josh Hartnett is storming the art-house circuit with Bunraku, we have no choice but to revisit their joint alma mater, the hallowed halls of Halloween H20. Title: Bunraku Directed By: Guy Moshe Starring: Josh Hartnett, Gackt, Woody Harrelson, Ron Perlman, Kevin McKidd, Demi Moore, Emily Kaiho Based on Transformers: Dark of the Moon‘s performance, there’s clearly a nice chunk of moviegoers who are okay with feature films that are visual spectacles and nothing more. However, not only isn’t Bunraku a Michael Bay blockbuster, but it’s highly stylized, instantly narrowing its target audience. Then again, by focusing on the fans of artistic hand-to-hand combat, Bunraku is poised to head right into more open arms. But, for the rest of us, while the visuals may be like nothing we’ve ever seen and downright incredible, it’s just not enough...
