Well-written and cute
schanzaysohail10 February 2021
This movie focuses on Haruki and Akihiko's relationship more than it does on Sato and Uenoyama. And its very cute cause we didn't get to see much of them in the show... It takes place around the same time in the show, if you've watched the show you can see them prepare for the same concert that happened in the show here too. But its more behind the scenes of whats happening before the show in Akihiko and haruki's life. I would totally recommend this to all given fans, its animated very well and s super cute and enjoyable.

Disappointing in a good way
jacobcooneyday6 February 2021
Let me start by saying that the Given movie is a good movie; If you like the anime, you'll enjoy the Movie.

With that out of the way I think its important to make one thing clear: If you go in expecting a continuation of the story from episodes 1-11 you will find yourself rather disappointed, as the Given Movie really only follows about half to two thirds of the story of Given.

The Movie almost entirely takes place from the perspectives of Haruki, Akihiko, and Mafuyu. In comparison to these three, Uenoyama has very little, but still important, dialogue.

I don't think this movie is bad, the pacing felt a little off, and the animation can feel a little bit janky in some places, mainly the 3D animated scenes. If they had the resources and time I think the movie would have benefited from another 15-30 minutes, but as it stands was still very enjoyable.

In summation, The Given Movie is an excellent addition to the story of Given, I recommend it to any fan of Given; however, the Given Movie is not a good continuation of Given, and I can only hope it can be the springboard for more Given, whether that is a Second Season, or another movie.

Given movie review
jaysshukla4 February 2021
Like the series, the movie doesn't disappoint either. It's a very simple movie but I enjoyed it thoroughly. We get to know more about the other two band members - Haruki and Akihiko.

We saw in season 1 how Mafuyu was initially unable to express himself and gradually he opens up, this pair is more straightforward. It is also interesting how the storyline or the pace really goes parallel to the character's personality. Just like how Mafuyu was unapproachable in the beginning, you would feel bored for the first few episodes. It is only bit later when you are shocked to know what he went through and you start craving for more of this series. Akihiko is very straightforward and the pace of the movie has never been an issue and it doesn't feel rushed either. Towards the end, you feel satisfied and wouldn't regret the time you spent watching this movie.

Like the series, the movie too has an insert track being performed by the character Mafuyu. Both these insert tracks serve great purpose to their respective storyline. The influence of the song is undeniable. While you will definitely enjoy the movie's insert track, I feel it doesn't compare to Fuyu no Hanashi, the one played in the series.

A different story
abdullahzahmad4 February 2021
This love story was a lot more different and complicated than the couple we saw on the show. But it was just as good, I really enjoyed kaji's character arc. It's definitely worth a watch

Overall story was the same however
kali_z14 February 2021
How fast the movie played out amplified the VERY iffy relationship between the two. The movie would've benefitted from an extra 30 minutes. The ending was especially quick.

Great except for the major character flaw
jennahobbs26 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I officially have a love hate relationship with this movie. Don't get me wrong, it's a very well done movie.

*spoiler alert*

...but damn, how that unfolded with ugetsu just pissed me off. I feel like he needs a happy ending. He did everything he could to try to distance himself both physically and emotionally from akihiko due to his feeling of smothering him, but akihiko just couldn't let him move on. Then, literally the instant he decides to move on he tosses ugetsu to the curb like he was no more than a passing fancy. Akihiko had been sleeping around left and right while mooching off of Ugetsu both literally and emotionally, then gets all bent out of shape the moment Ugetsu tries to do the same to try to help himself move on, while also trying to prevent Akihiko from actually having to witness it, to no avail. I just can't. Akihiko sucks. Not only did he use Ugetsu, but the moment he gets that retaliation from him, Akihiko uses it as an excuse to assault a close friend just because he knows that Haruki has feelings for him and would probably let him get away with it - which he does. Seriously, the guy's a totally scummy leech.

Other than that MAJOR character flaw in Akihiko, great movie. Did great on the bl aspect too.

If you liked the series, no way you won't like the movie!

"This is an ordinary love story, that took place one ordinary spring" Such a beautiful movie! Perfect sequel to Given: the series, focusing mainly on the storyline between Akihiko and Haruki.

Like the series, the movie doesn't disappoint either. Unlike the series which takes us through Mafuyu's story in a very slow-paced way, the movie is more fast paced and it suits the main pair.

We get better understanding of their feelings and most importantly what music means to one!!!!

For the cherry on top we get an insert track in the movie, Yoru Ga Akeru.

I think its so worth the watch! So go for it!

Nonconsensual Sexual Acts and Poor Animation
rjwickings6 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Firstly, there are some serious incidents involving sex that happen in this film. Including a possible rape scene between two of the characters - it is left slightly ambiguous about the rape but there are definitely some nonconsensual sex acts performed.

The fact the film ends with the two parties involved in that scene in a relationship is terrible. A victim of abuse ends up apparently happy in a relationship with their abuser. That is a terrible message to send and just lazy from the writers. If they wanted to tackle serious issues like this it could have be done in a much better way. Rather than promoting to their audience that this is normal and ok. It isn't and there will be a number of people influenced by this.

Not suitable for the younger fans of the tv show either due to the above content.

Lastly, and less importantly, some of the animation is terrible - see the early scenes with the conductor and the orchestra.

Messy and dramatic, but with a solid core
Emma-M-V23 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie feels very poorly plotted, with the story jumping in leaps and bounds, instead of building at a satisfying pace. We are thrust into the plot headfirst, given a kind of misleading focus. This is likely because it is a sequel to the Given series, so it focuses on that series' main character Mafuyu first before settling into a focus on the three main characters of this story. I felt it was a poor choice to avert the focus like this, and to keep cutting back to Mufuyu as if he is a main character here when he would work better as a secondary character. I feel like the movie doesn't know what it wants to be - a story about a Mufuyu's band entering a song contest, or a dramatic love story. In trying to be both it feels discombobulated and strained.

I think the story line of the love triangle is quite interesting, but it feels a bit under cooked. Haruki's character and reactions feels very authentic, and I like Akihiko's arc. He is basically going through the process of exiting an abusive relationship, which is very intriguing, but the abusive dynamic between Akihiko and Ugetsu is kind of unexplored. It's this very interesting element, but there is never really a reckoning with the fact that Ugetsu is physically abusive, or that Akihiko has way less material power than him, being a runaway. And the ending, where Akihiko returns to his parents, and apparently ghosts Haruki for a while because he is "trying to become a man deserving of him" (and isn't that the most annoying kind of romance trope? ) happens wholly off screen in a time jump. Why did he run away from his parents in the first place? What did he "apologize" for? Who knows, who cares. Even if it seems crucial to Akihiko's character.

I did enjoy the story, and I found it a pretty interesting one, but I have a feeling reading a summary of the plot would be about as interesting as watching it - and perhaps less confusing.

TW: There is also a scene of quasi-sexual assault between the mains (Nothing so horrible as the old Yaoi tropes, but still).
