Really not worth the time. Frustrating, since every time it looks like it might get good it gets stupid again.
bill0404323 August 2020
Extremely poor writing and directing, overloaded with repeated flashbacks and a lot of plot holes. Probably good for kids about 12-16 who might like the action. Some of the acting is good, most isn't, and there's only a couple characters you really care about. The fight scenes get monotonous and most are totally unbelievable. Forget the ending, it was a total disappointment. Best thing I can say is they chose all very attractive actresses.

Has Potential
Comphunk29 March 2020
Watched the first episode. Like all Korean Dramas, it is fast paced. Things happen quickly. It is going to be a police sponsored artificially enabled officers against a mighty corrupt organization. The Plot isnt new, but it gets interesting due to the involvement of Sy-Fy. All I can say that it has potential, but really judge much by a 75 Minute Long first episode. The Bad Guy seems really tough though. 7 for now. Lets see how this pans out.

story is the weakness
movakalin22 March 2021
The story is finished after the first four or five episodes. But the show stretches over 16 episodes. Lots and lots of illogical story parts and tons of hangers/B-roll material.

Poor direction!
ag-461668 January 2021
The series is overall good. The acting is good, story is fine, action and all, its fine but the director ruined it. There are so many small mistakes in the directing. Very poor direction

yeah it is not perfect but the plot is awesome, but the last episode
JamesRutland8 May 2023
I'm going to finish to see this series and after some doubts above all dealing with dialogues and some strange plot choices that have an explanation in any case, I can say that the plot in general is astonishing moving the characters like pieces of a complicated puzzle. What I think this show misses is the right amount of financial resources to get better results. Some choices about the actors which play the several character is questionable. The evil character is interpreted perfectly, unlike the good character of which I would have prefer it was played by Da-hyun Kim . Indeed my preferred character is Seol. I know about the several complains but the series is worth to be watched due to the storytelling, although the dialogues appear rather childish in some circumstances. As example, the way the villain uses to trap his opponent toward the end is amazing.

Final thought: last episode confirms the lack of courage many writers have above all in cinema environment providing the usual formula: change everything to change nothing. In my opinion this story would have been a masterpiece whether the main character was died in the 14th episode, whether two of his mates were killed in the following episodes, whether the main villain was seemingly victorious and the final entrance of a new opponent had prefigured a sequel. As example Seol. From 9 stars to 6 stars.

Good actors/actresses meh script
nicci197231 May 2021
Park Sung-woong Is an excellent actor. As with most of the actors. But the plot/script is lacking in effectiveness. They tried though. 8 episodes maybe 10 would have told a more cohesive story. I am a for of Korean supernatural shows. This was more science fiction. So perhaps I am not a choice audience member.

Rugal is legit!
ReviewsMatter25 April 2020
First episode in and I'm already hooked! Action, passion, good cop versus criminal lord/empire, and vengeance makes for a great storyline. Use closed captions, binge & enjoy.. unless you understand the Korean language. Once again Netflix you came through!

Sadly dissapointing
simonronneberg-426-10340529 January 2022
I'm struggling to make sense of the seires. Started quite interesting with some promising CGI and cool f/x. The further you get into the episodes, the less sense it makes. The actors tried to make this interesting, but there are so many plotholes and you end up with more questions.

Let us start with the "Rugal"-program. What was the point of it? It's purpuse? So dead people can wake up from the dead? What about Argos... It begins with being a company that produces something. We never get to know what, medicine? Drugs? No idea... The boardmembers kill eachother for power, still no info what they will gain apart from moving up the ladder. The evil lad plays his role good, because you really start to hate him. But why he ends up being so bad is still unclear. Furthermore, the incredibly anoying issiue with noone dearing to kill the evil lad despite numerous possibilites, is just sad.

The series could have been shorten, because you lose interest after the 6-7.th. Episode. Yes it has glimpses of potential, but lacks the convincing part. The director is probably to blame for this..

Prime Example of How Poor Writing Ruins a Show
fake_moviestar20 July 2021
What a frustrating viewing experience.

Rugal had a lot of elements that could have made it a great show - an interesting premise, good actors, cool CGI, and just a fun super-hero vibe. Unfortunately, really bad writing completely ruins this show. The plot points were all there, but they are never connected. Scenes feel disjointed, unexplained, and confusing. Even using logic jumps, there is just no cohesiveness to the writing at all. There was also no clear goals for either the good guys or the bad guys - what is Argos? What were their goals? What were they trying to accomplish? None of this is clearly explained, and so it felt like there were no stakes to anything that Rugal did. There was zero tension except perhaps in the beginning, making the viewer feel bored. I mostly finished the show because I like Choi Jin-Hyuk and I thought the artificial eyes were cool. Although I really couldn't take anything seriously once they gave him that anime-esque emo haircut.

This was such a disappointment because it felt like a marvel-type show and could have been really cool if they had executed the writing well. Instead this was a total mess. It really felt like something that a 14 year old wrote while high after watching the Winter Soldier.

Brilliant!

The South Koreans know how to make their series. After watching Smokin, Mr.Sunshine, Arthdal Chronicles and amazing movies like The Host, Old Man and Parasite to name a few, it became clear to me that South Korean movie making steers clear of the typical Hollywood stereotypes and clichés. Even though the story in Regal unravels slowly, it has more depth as the season comes closer to the end. As most South Korean films and series, they always tend to have an emotional depth, that western films and series lack. Love doesn't always have to be shown as people jumping into bed 2 or 3 times each episode like in most American productions. The south koreans showed one of the most in depth emotional love stories with Mr.Sunshine, without any physical contact between the protagonist and his "chosen " one.

Rugal manages to build up an deep emotional bond between the different characters and how it evolves over time. The fighting scenes are very well coordinated, and makes the team look badass, but they still get hurt and they all have their weaknesses.

Regal is certainly no masterpiece, but its a well made and entertaining series which hopefully will see an upcoming season sequel next year.

Started with so much promise
mokolpop16 March 2021
The first half of this series was very good, then it just started to drag on, so many drawn out emotional scenes with the emotional music and flashbacks to fill the time.

I ended up watching the full series because I'd committed myself .

If I was to advise my future self I would advise against watching this show.

I'm hooked. It held my attention and I got hooked on the characters. I love any show that can draw me into the fantasy which is why I watch this type of entertainment.

If you are between the ages of...
docdra9 April 2020
...7 and 14 this may be the perfect show for you, for anyone else you'll notice the sophomoric writing is sub-par, the acting not much better, and the overall story lacking. It plays out like a 70s TV cop show while looking modern.

The main character is a clueless guy that has no standout features - he's not a good fighter, he's not particularly a good detective, and he doesn't seem all that intelligent, but no one seems that intelligent in this series.

The bad guys are your typical Asian posers that only come off as 'bad' because they have bigger and better guns and way less morals than anyone else. They aren't that smart either though.

I'll watch a couple more episodes unless it gets worse, but I've seen some quality Korean movies and drama and this isn't in the same league - not even close. Watch the first episode and you'll see all sorts of plot holes and silly tropes, but if you can get past that it unfortunately doesn't get better...so far.

Deserves all the stars there is. Keep up the Great work "Rugal"
First thing first for people not to judge it to early. Let the plot build up the story and trust me it doesn't disappoint. It kept me glued to the screen and curious to watch next and next. Lastly lots of love for the team of Rugal for all your hard work and love put into making it among my favourite.

Horrible writing
qinyanwesker17 May 2020
The show seems legit for first 4 eps, but really went downhill and barely watchable after that. Plots twist were used here and there but nothing makes sense and got abandoned really within the same episode. It was the writers decided to try something but felt like it wouldn't work but forgot to cut it from editing room.

Most illogical show I have seen in the recent times. That's all I can say about this. The concept they took looks cool but everything went wrong logically.

Extremely interesting concept and good acting.
rahulmehta-9808514 January 2022
This was my first Korean tv show and I was hooked. This tv show has good acting, plenty of action and a good story line however the only thing that kept me going was Park Sung-Woong as Hwang Deuk-Gu. I actually believed that he may have been a real gangster. He was awesome. I am definitely watching more of him from now on.

so long and drawn out
spelbound23 April 2020
The writing is bad, the ideas are overdone, and the story just drags on and on. They could have done this in 6 episodes. Im at episode 9 and I am just about to give up. Please, no more of this poor attempt. Stop.

Very poor
guga3124 June 2020
Horrible writing, plots doesn't make sense. Main character is more lost that everything. It seems that they run out of ideas will making it and start adding nonsense to it. If season 2 is the same, it won't have a third and I'll pray for this. Very very bad series!

Interesting concept for the series, but the script sort of dragged for the first several episodes. The second half of the season got better and more interesting.
