After the 2020 death of Olivia DeHavilland at age 104, Walter Mirisch became the oldest living winner of an Academy Award. Today this legendary producer turns 100 years old and is still going strong.
If for some crazy reason you don’t know the name, let me tell you the Mirisch Corporation, which he founded with brothers Harold and Marvin, was sort of the Marvel of its time except it was about much more than comic book superheroes, a true independent in the studio system, that turned out hit after hit, many winning Oscars, that provided a safe haven for some of the great filmmakers of the time including Billy Wilder, John Sturges, Robert Wise, Norman Jewison, Blake Edwards, Hal Ashby, George Roy Hill, not to mention films directed by greats of Hollywood’s golden era including John Ford, William Wyler, Michael Curtiz and on and on.

On Monday, August 28, 2017, Turner Classic Movies will devote an entire day of their “Summer Under the Stars” series to the late, great Louis Burton Lindley Jr. If that name doesn’t sound familiar, well, then just picture the fella riding the bomb like a buckin’ bronco at the end of Dr. Strangelove…, or the racist taskmaster heading up the railroad gang in Blazing Saddles, or the doomed Sheriff Baker, who gets one of the loveliest, most heartbreaking sendoffs in movie history in Sam Peckinpah’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.
Lindley joined the rodeo circuit when he was 13 and soon picked up the name that would follow him throughout the length of his professional career, in rodeo and in movies & TV. One of the rodeo vets got a look at the lank newcomer and told him, “Slim pickin’s. That’s all you’re gonna get in this rodeo.

The United States is “my country, right or wrong,” of course, and I consider myself a patriotic person, but I’ve never felt that patriotism meant blind fealty to the idea of America’s rightful dominance over global politics or culture, and certainly not to its alleged preferred status on God’s short list of favored nations, or that allegiance to said country was a license to justify or rationalize every instance of misguided, foolish, narrow-minded domestic or foreign policy.
In 2012, when this piece was first posted, it seemed like a good moment to throw the country’s history and contradictions into some sort of quick relief, and the most expedient way of doing that for me was to look at the way the United States (and the philosophies at its core) were reflected in the movies, and not just the ones which approached the country head-on as a subject.

It’s probably fitting that Free Fire didn’t get a fair shake at the box office, if only because it seems destined, if not conceived outright, for a spot in the “underappreciated cult classic canon.” While the film, boasting an A-list cast led by Brie Larson, would appear to be co-writer/director Ben Wheatley’s most commercial film to date, Free Fire winds up shooting its way so far through the mainstream action genre that it winds up back in arthouse territory. The ‘70s-set plot involves an arms deal in an abandoned warehouse gone horribly wrong, but the particulars aren’t especially important. What is important is that Wheatley takes just about every Die Hard-style action movie trope to its furthest limit. Remember the scenes of John McClane dragging his bloodied torso around the Nakatomi Plaza? Well, pretty much every character spends most of the movie doing that, except in far more excruciating detail.

Billy Wilder’s Buddy Buddy (1981) might be one of the most obvious go-to examples in the annals of conventional wisdom when it comes to the cinephile’s parlor game of pointing out a great director’s greatest foible. Upon release the movie was summarily dismissed by critics and ignored by audiences—it managed a paltry $7 million domestically, three million less than its production budget.
Roger Ebert, in his review, called Buddy Buddy “a comedy without laughs,” one apparently so vile that it could inspire not only audience indifference but also one of the revered reviewer’s laziest pieces of criticism. Ebert’s short piece quickly degenerates into name-calling-- “This movie is appalling” is the first sentence of the review, and the movie’s name goes unmentioned until the second paragraph—sans much in the way of actual insight. And unfortunately the critic’s disdain ends up functioning as a substitute...

Billy Wilder directed Sunset Blvd. with Gloria Swanson and William Holden. Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett movies Below is a list of movies on which Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder worked together as screenwriters, including efforts for which they did not receive screen credit. The Wilder-Brackett screenwriting partnership lasted from 1938 to 1949. During that time, they shared two Academy Awards for their work on The Lost Weekend (1945) and, with D.M. Marshman Jr., Sunset Blvd. (1950). More detailed information further below. Post-split years Billy Wilder would later join forces with screenwriter I.A.L. Diamond in movies such as the classic comedy Some Like It Hot (1959), the Best Picture Oscar winner The Apartment (1960), and One Two Three (1961), notable as James Cagney's last film (until a brief comeback in Milos Forman's Ragtime two decades later). Although some of these movies were quite well received, Wilder's later efforts – which also included The Seven Year Itch...

The Interview and the geopolitical crisis it caused is arguably the most important movie-related story of recent weeks.
The story device featured in The Interview, the idea of a film featuring the assassination of the current ruling leader, is nothing new, and in fact is seen through much of film’s history. In 1941 a German-in-exile Fritz Lang shown an unsuccessful attack on Adolf Hitler in Man Hunt (this story was also told in BBC’s Rogue Male from 1976 starring Peter O’Toole). The Shaw Brothers used the actual newsreel footage of Queen Elisabeth visiting Hong-Kong (then a British colony) in their 1976 martial arts flick A Queen’s Ransom (a.k.a. The International Assassin) starring post-James Bond George Lazenby as an Ira assassin and Angela Mao as a heroine trying to stop him. Arriving on DVD without having experienced a Us theatrical release, The Dark Valley toured several smaller film festivals after premiering a year ago at the Berlin International Film Festival. Multiple category winner at both the German Film and Bavarian Film Awards, with a stop at Karlovy Vary and a late 2014 North American stint, which included programming in the mini German Currents events in Los Angeles, it’s unfortunate the title didn’t receive a wider platform considering its rather curious elements.

The director that epitomized the 1970’s, Joseph Sargent, has sadly passed away. (1925-2014)
With a career lasting 50 years, Sargent brought to the big screen such thrilling cinema as The Taking Of The Pelham One Two Three, MacArthur, White Lightning and Colossus: The Forbin Project.
Directors Guild of America President Paris Barclay made the following statement upon learning of the passing of director Joseph Sargent:
“When it comes to directing Movies for Television, Joe’s dominance and craftsmanship was legendary – for the past 50 years. With eight DGA Awards nominations in Movies for Television, more than any other director in this category, Joe embodied directorial excellence on the small screen. He was unafraid of taking risks, believing in his heart that television audiences demanded the highest quality stories – whether chronicling uncomfortable historic events like the infamous Tuskegee syphilis study in Miss Evers’ Boys, or compelling personal stories about inspiring individuals like...

Surely everyone will agree that comedy is perhaps the most difficult genre to make in Hindi Cinema. Whether it is the script, the direction or even the performances, the ability to make people laugh is a complex task which requires immense skill and talent. After viewing Rohit Shetty’s much anticipated film Chennai Express, it can be declared that this is definitely a film full of humour and will no doubt put a smile on your face. It is the big Eid release which has also garnered major international interest. Starring superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, Shetty manages to carve here a film which has some great comedic moments with a strong South Indian touch to it!
Chennai Express is essentially based on a middle-aged man named Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) who is sent by his grandmother to immerse his grandfather’s ashes at a river in the South Indian city of Rameshwaram.

Rohit Shetty's much-awaited entertainer "Chennai Express" boasts of a soothing bouquet of typical Bollywood numbers and some peppy tracks with exceptional mixing. The music album has eight tracks, including a mashup.
The album rightly sets the pace with "One two three four"! This one surely has the potential.

Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical adaptation, loosely based on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, was filmed in 1960 at 68th Street and Amsterdam Avenue (just near Lincoln Center), and the iconic prologue between the Sharks and the Jets takes place in a schoolyard at 110th Street and 2nd Avenue.
3. Sex & The City
It’s no secret that the fifth character in this hit TV show was New York City itself. In the movie, the city plays just as important a role.

Recently turned producer Ajay Devgn’s latest venture Son of Sardar, which stars newbie Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt, Juhi Chawla and of course, Ajay Devgn himself, is set to release on the festival of Diwali on November the 13th. Confirming this, Devgn re-tweeted film critic Taran Adarsh’s post about the film, “@taran_adarsh: #Sos starring @ajaydevgn to release this Diwali, 13 Nov. Exclusive pic from the sets in Patiala http://twitpic.com/97tjw5” the post also includes an exclusive still of Ajay Devgn from the film (see below).

"I want to thank three persons,” said Michel Hazanavicius, accepting the 2012 Best Picture Oscar for “The Artist.” “I want to thank Billy Wilder, I want to thank Billy Wilder and I want to thank Billy Wilder.” He wasn’t the first director to namecheck Wilder in an acceptance speech. In 1994, Fernando Trueba, accepting the Foreign Language Film Oscar for "Belle Epoque" quipped, "I would like to believe in God in order to thank him. But I just believe in Billy Wilder... so, thank you Mr. Wilder." Wilder reportedly called the next day "Fernando? It's God."
So just what exactly was it that inspired these men to expend some of the most valuable seconds of speechifying airtime they'll ever know, to tip their hats to Wilder? And can we bottle it?
Born in a region of Austria/Hungary that is now part of Poland, Wilder's story feels like an archetype of...

America's Next Top Model 18.02 "Kris Jenner" Review
You remember the promise I talked about Top Model showing in its premiere last week?
Yeah, forget I said that.
In the second episode of cycle 18, the newness wore off and the problems that Top Model: British Invasion will be facing for the entirety of its run became clearer. The casting, especially, has yet to click, but surprisingly, it's the American girls that are falling extremely flat for me this cycle. Say what you want about the Brit girls and their overconfidence last week, but thus far in Top Model, they've been far more memorable and distinct than their American counterparts, most of whom blur together in a sea of bangs and dreary confessionals. There's no X factor on "Team America", no girl that immediately makes me sit up and take notice; it's a bunch of bland, interchangeable, extremely safe girls that don't...

The 2009 remake of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta, updated the film to the tastes of modern audiences seeking a thrill, but in doing so they toned down the element of the original that made it so great: New York. Joseph Sargent’s engaging original, with two far better leads in Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw oozed New York from every frame with the grime of the subway cars, the indignant anger of daily commuters, and the whirling political machine of city hall. So much of Pelham One Two Three relies on the sarcasm of virtually every character coping with the hostage ransom plot and almost all of that stems from the world famous New York attitude. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three not only delivers an entertaining ride for its entire duration, but it’s a time capsule for what just...

One of the joys of the current Blu-ray era is that studios have been delving into their libraries and restoring gems, releasing them with varying degrees of love and care. We’ve recently seen, for example, the arrival of musical greats West Side Story and My Fair Lady. But studios have also been working to bring back the really good films that have been somewhat forgotten. They may not get the deluxe restoration or bonus features, but it’s nice to have clean prints and high definition editions so we can still enjoy them at home. I’m reminded of all this because out now is the original The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. This film, starring Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw, is based on a novel and was one of my favorite films of the 1970s. I was interested to see the Tony Scott remake a few years...

Soon to be released film ''Murder-2''s song ''Aye khuda'' is very popular among today's audience. And the singer who is creditable for such a melody is Kshitij Tarey. Kshitij Tarey has a rich melodious voice which he lent to this song along with Mithun Sharma and Saim. Mithun has written the lyrics and music is also composed by him. Everyone today is humming the song now and then. Asked a supposed reason for such popularity, Kshitij said, 'Everything depends on teamwork. If the lyrics and composition are well-compatible, a good song is on the record. Also, if a song is well-pictureised then the song is also loved visually too." When asked the reason for the popularity of the song, whether it is being a song of a movie of Bhatt camp or that is filmed on Emraan Hashmi, Tarey said, "When this song was recorded, I didn't...

In her 8 year long career, Sameera Reddy has been seen in only 10 Hindi films. Now that's quite a miniscule number for an actress who showed quite some promise when she started off and has always been known for her immense sex appeal and ability to make heads turn. One wonders what made her so choosy about the films that she does when she could have signed quite a few projects in a flurry."That's because I have never ever done films where it is necessary for me to show that 'hey, I am here so look at me'", says Sameera who was last seen in De Dana Dan, "Offers do come for all actors but then it is up to you that what do you pick and choose. Do you want to do most of the films that come your way or do you want to do...

"I wouldn't say it's my launch pad. It's an integral part and will only enhance my brand value," Raghav tells me. However, Raghav, who scored the music in Kabul Express, Sunday, One Two Three and Haal-e-dil, is keen to make his big screen debut in a film like Grease. "I would love to work in a musical like Grease. It holds tremendous appeal for the youth," he says, adding that he would love to work on the script if at all the project takes shape. But singers/composers like Sonu, Himesh and Abhijeet haven't been lucky.
