NBC is rolling out the red carpet to celebrate Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary.
Ahead of its upfront presentation next week to Madison Avenue ad buyers, the network on Friday announced that it has scheduled a three-hour primetime special to honor the anniversary. The special, which will also be live, is set to air Sunday, Feb. 16, from 8-11 p.m. Et.
That will cap what NBC says will be a “celebratory weekend” honoring the Lorne Michaels-created sketch show.
Additional details have not yet been announced as Michaels and company are in the home stretch of closing out SNL’s 49th season with alum Maya Rudolph set to host this weekend and Jake Gyllenhaal on deck for the May 18 season finale.
News that NBC would formally celebrate SNL’s 50th anniversary comes as no surprise as Michaels said last January that he was already planning for the February event.

“When I was just a little girl I asked my mother, what will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be rich? Here’s what she said to me: Qué será, será. Whatever will be, will be”
The opening of Michael Lehmann’s Heathers begins with a dreamy cover of a familiar song. Angelic voices ask a mother to predict the future only to be met with an infuriating response: “whatever will be, will be.” Her answer is most likely intended to present a life of limitless possibility, but as the introduction to a film devoid of competent parents, it feels like a noncommittal platitude. Heathers is filled with teenagers looking for guidance only to be let down by one adult after another. Gen Xers and elder millennials may have glamorized the outlandish fashion and creative slang while drooling over a smoking hot killer couple, but the violent film now packs an ominous punch.

Lindsay Lohan is looking to take on the legacy of Ann-Margret.
After Lohan first voiced her desire to portray the frequent Elvis Presley collaborator in a biopic, Us Weekly reports that Ann-Margret, 83, has agreed to the project and has been spending time with Lohan in preparation for her portrayal. IndieWire has reached out to Lohan’s representatives for comment, but we did not immediately receive a response.
A source told Us Weekly that Lohan “feels she’s the only one who can play the part” of Ann-Margret, and that Lohan “wants to win an Oscar and an Emmy.” Lohan believes the biopic could “take her career to the next level.”
The actress recently has ushered in her “Lohannaissance” via some Netflix movies, which she’s also produced, and is preparing for the long-awaited “Freaky Friday” sequel — it’s in the works with Jamie Lee Curtis. Lohan recently had a cameo...

More background fluff from the streamer, this time from Mean Girls director Mark Waters with a splashy Thailand location
Despite experience mostly insisting caution, certain markers still allow one to naively daydream that a new Netflix comedy might be worth more than a background half-watch while ironing. A big name, an experienced writer, a genuine studio-trained director, some substantive source material, anything to allow us to glide on the brief hope that we’re not in hammy, Hallmark-adjacent territory.
This thinking sometimes works – 2019’s Let It Snow was based on a solid YA novel, 2021’s Moxie had Amy Poehler in front of and behind the camera, this year’s Players benefited from the considerable charm of star Gina Rodriguez – but it too often makes precious little difference. For Mother’s Day in the US, the streamer has Mother of the Bride, a breezy comedy that arrives from director Mark Waters,...

‘Mother of the Bride’ Review: Brooke Shields Says I Do to Netflix’s Aggressively Inoffensive Rom-Com
After “Ticket to Paradise” and “Shotgun Wedding” showed us the different ways in which calamity ensues when planning weddings abroad, Netflix releases “Mother of the Bride,” which combines the essential elements of both those recent romantic comedies into one passable package. The far-off setting emphasizes the lavish and luxe, though the narrative is cheaply woven and fairly threadbare. While “Mean Girls” director Mark Waters’ latest fails to add anything unique to the conversation, it does scrounge up a modest amount of heart when it comes to its saccharine sweet message of never giving up on happily ever after.
Mere seconds after her extravagant proposal, Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) begins fretting to her fiancé Rj (Sean Teale) about how to frame their engagement to her judgmental widowed mom Dr. Lana Winslow (Brooke Shields), who doesn’t even know her only child has a steady beau. Venerable actor Bette Midler says that her partially-autobiographical 2000 sitcom “Bette” represented a series of mistakes.
Among the errors, was her decision not to sue Lindsay Lohan, who appeared as her daughter in the pilot episode, but who did not continue in the following 16 episodes which broadcast on CBS in the U.S.
Midler unpacked her regrets on “Fail Better,” a podcast hosted by fellow star David Duchovny. “’Bette.’ A big, big mistake. I think for several reasons,” Midler said.
She suggested that Lohan’s early exit from “Bette” may have contributed to its failure. “Lindsay Lohan was cast as my daughter in the pilot. Well, after the pilot, Lindsay Lohan decided she didn’t want to do it. Or she had other fish to fry. So, Lindsay Lohan left the building. And I said, well, now what do you do?”
At the time, Lohan had recently enjoyed success in “Parent Trap.

There has been much pessimism floating around regarding this past weekend's box office. I myself have tossed some of that pessimism into the void. Much of that has to do with the fact that the summer movie season kicked off with "The Fall Guy" opening to a wildly disappointing $28.5 million, marking the worst start to summer in more than 20 years. Far less ink has been spilled regarding Sony's new horror movie "Tarot," which also opened over the weekend and snuck into the top five on the domestic charts with a $6.5 million debut. At first glance, it's not a good look for a movie from a major studio opening on more than 3,100 screens across North America. However, this might actually end up being a sneaky little hit.
"Tarot" also pulled in $3.7 million internationally, giving it a $10.2 million global start. Again, that number isn't going to break any records. It's not...

Review: I almost had to check my calendar and make sure we weren’t in January. Usually, this level of horror is relegated to those dark winter months so I was surprised to see Tarot getting a May release. And then even further shocked to not see a single advertisement for the film. I go to the theater a lot and yet I wasn’t exposed to a single Tarot trailer. Never a good sign of a film’s quality. But also brings the advantage of having absolutely nothing spoiled for me leading in. Even still, this film is so generic that I feel like I’d not only seen the trailer,...

After a shortened 2022-23 season, Saturday Night Live returned a bit later than usual to kick off its 2023-24 run.
The writers strike affected both the end of last season and the start of season 49; the end of the labor action on Sept. 25 meant a mid-October start for SNL — with former castmember Pete Davidson hosting — rather than the late September or early October premiere the show usually has. (The cast is covered under a different SAG-AFTRA contract than the one actors are currently striking against, so they can perform without crossing picket lines.)
The show’s cast returned intact from last season, with James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman moving up from featured players to repertory players. Chloe Troast joined the cast as a featured player.
Below is The Hollywood Reporter’s updating guide to season 49’s SNL hosts and musical guests.

Normally, the summer movie season would kick off with a Marvel superhero movie, but this May, we’re doing things a little differently. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This year and for the first time since the pandemic, Marvel isn’t launching the month of May. Instead, Universal jumped on the date for its new action comedy “The Fall Guy,” loosely based on the popular ’80s series starring Lee Majors. Two of the Oscar-nominated stars from last year’s blockbuster “Barbenheimer” phenom unite for this new action rom-com from filmmaker David Leitch (“Bullet Train”). Those stars, of course, are Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, who were nominated for Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan‘s Best Picture-winning “Oppenheimer,” respectively, two of the biggest movies of 2023. “The Fall Guy” premiered at the SXSW Film and TV Festival and even played at the annual exhibitors’ convention, CinemaCon,...

Amid Paramount Global’s removal of Bob Bakish as CEO and the ongoing uncertainty of a company sale, it was business as usual for the first quarter at the media conglomerate — which included a $1.3 billion charge for content write-offs as well as layoffs.
Paramount Global reported Q1 2024 earnings Monday, announcing Bakish’s exit and the installation of an unusual three-in-a-box “Office of the CEO”: CBS’s George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks, and Paramount Pictures’ Brian Robbins. The committee of three made brief remarks on the earnings call but didn’t take questions from analysts. The call, which lasted less than 10 minutes, concluded with the theme music to “Mission: Impossible.”
During the first quarter of 2024, Paramount Global took a total of $1.12 billion in content charges, including $909 million for the impairment of content to its estimated fair value as well as $209 million for development cost write-offs and contract-termination costs.

Photo credit: “Shutterstock.AI” Remember how crazy it is that the iconic movie Mean Girls is practically an adult now? Two decades! Tina Fey’s wickedly funny writing (and her Ms. Norbury role!) is still pure gold. And that cast! Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried – they were all pitch-perfect, and the film sent Lohan soaring. Cady Heron (Lohan) tries to infiltrate the ultra-popular Plastics, but her crush on Regina George’s ex sets off the classic high school drama we all know too well. Oh, the cringe!” So, why does Mean Girls still hit home after all this time? Probably because those social groups and sneaky power plays just keep on happening. Even with the Broadway musical (and the less-awesome movie-of-the-musical), the story just keeps on proving how timeless it is. As Lindsay Lohan said when the movie first blew up. Overall revenue for the period ending March 31 climbed 6% year-on-year from $7.4bn to $7.7bn, while operating loss improved 66% from $1.2bn to $417m.

Paramount has just unleashed its first quarter financials and they look pretty promising, although all eyes are on the shakeup in the C-suite. Revenue was higher across the board, albeit a hair shy of Wall Street expectations. Operating losses narrowed. Free cash flow rose, a key metric since it allows the company to pay down debt.
After a bleak Q4, TV and media group advertising jumped 14%, buoyed by Super Bowl Xviii on CBS in February. The studio had two winners in Mean Girls and Bob Marley: One Love. Paramount+ ended the quarter with more than 71 million subscribers, beating expectations and up from 65.7 million at the end of 2023.
The number hit just after the company confirmed that CEO Bob Bakish is departing, replaced with three division heads in a new office of the CEO amid drama-filled takeover talks with David Ellison’s Skydance.

The recent broadcast of Super Bowl Lviii boosted Paramount Global’s first quarter of 2024, stabilizing advertising revenue at its TV operations, as the company’s streaming operations added more than 3 million subscribers and cut losses there by more than 40%.
Overall, Paramount narrowed its first quarter operating losses while seeing a 6% uptick in revenue, due in large part to audience and advertiser interest in its Big Game presentation, which set a new viewing record.
The company released details of its first-quarter performance even as it announced a surprising executive turnover, with the heads of its TV, cable and movie businesses named to run the conglomerate after Bob Bakish, who had been the CEO for the past few years, was ousted. In a shocking move that is shocking nobody this afternoon, Paramount Global President and CEO Bob Bakish is out. In are his (hopefully) crack replacement team. “Paramount Global includes exceptional assets and we believe strongly in the future value creation potential of the Company,” Shari Redstone, the chair of Paramount’s board, said in a statement. “I have tremendous confidence in George, Chris, and Brian. Mean Girls has finally been released! Originally scheduled for Paramount Plus, the executives opted to send this film to theaters after a positive reception from test audiences. The original 2004 film is still considered a classic, with plenty of quotes used to this very day, so when it was revealed that another version was confirmed, most people were scratching their heads wondering if Mean Girls needed a reboot. Unbeknownst to audiences, this version of Mean Girls is an adaptation of the broadway musical. Based on the advertisement, you wouldn’t know first-hand that this version was a musical. The box office has been firmly in recovery mode for several years now. The pandemic, it's no secret, completely upended the business, and movie theaters have been trying to figure out what the future looks like ever since. Hollywood, for its part, has been doing the same, attempting to balance its streaming-focused operations with the need to release movies in theaters. 2024 has brought forth yet another challenge as the Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America strikes last year resulted in a disappointingly bare release calendar. Dire though it has seemed at times, there have been many bright spots in the darkness.
Yes, we've had more than a few box office flops this year, ranging from superhero films like "Madame Web" to total whiffs like "The Book of Clarence." Those flops have helped create a rough situation. However, we've also had quite a few hits. Not just movies that...

Married at First Sight celeb Chloe Brown recently slammed the rest of the Denver women for trolling her online. So, what did Michael Shiakallis’s ex have to say?
Married At First Sight: Chloe Brown Was A Late Arrival To Season 17
By the time Chloe Brown arrived in Married at First Sight Season 17 scenes in Denver, things were already a dumpster fire. Michael Shiakallis’s first bride ditched him at the altar, which was a first in the matchmaking show’s long history.
Chloe Brown came in as a backup match for Michael Shiakallis. Considering Chloe Brown was late to the Married at First Sight party, and considering who her match was, most watchers agree that she did the best with what she had.

2024 is an important year for the movie business. The past few years have been all about recovering from the pandemic. Now? Hollywood and theater chains are facing the challenge of weathering a year that has been crippled by 2023's Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America strikes. There have been moments worth cheering about, such as the success of "Dune: Part Two." But, as always, there have been plenty of sour moments at the box office as well, with more than a few flops to go along with the hits.
The early part of the year was anchored by relatively smaller hits like director David Ayer's "The Beekeeper" and the "Mean Girls" musical. Mixed in along the way were a wide variety of misfires, from hopeful big studio blockbusters to smaller, original movies just trying to find their way in an uncertain theatrical landscape. Some of these flops...

Paramount’s all-audience movie If, starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by John Krasinski, is heading for a $40M-plus opening on May 17 — which is very good for a non-holiday in May and for an original movie.
Krasinski produced, directed and wrote If.
The PG movie is hot with parents, kids and the 17-34 crowd, especially female. If arrived on three-week pre-release tracking with a very-high 16 “unaided” — that’s the category where those polled express interest in a movie without being prompted. That’s higher than what DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 arrived on tracking with; that fourthquel debuted to $57.9M.
Comps are tricky for If: Hello?! When was the last PG-rated live-action conceived tentpole based on an original property? There was the Jennifer Aniston-Owen Wilson 2008 dog romance Marley & Me, which debuted to $36.3M, but that doesn’t count. There also was 2004’s Nicolas Cage action...

Emily Balch saw the clips of Chloe Brown chatting it up with Brennan Shoykhet and Cameron Frazer, and she wasn’t too happy about it.
The Married at First Sight star clapped back at the trio with a shady response on social media, calling them the “tweedle trifecta.”
Emily responded to a clip of the trio calling out the wives for their mean-girl antics toward Chloe.
Viewers noticed that the brunette beauty was left out of the clique when the other woman continued to show up to all the Mafs Afterparty episodes clad in pink.
However, it became more obvious at the reunion when the four wives sat on one side of the stage clad in pink while Chloe sat on the men’s side, dressed in purple.
Sadly, things have only worsened since the reunion, and Chloe has cut the mean girls out of her life for good.

In many ways, the role of Mary Jane, the single mother at the center of Amy Herzog’s compassionate play Mary Jane, was made for Rachel McAdams.
The actress’ most notable characters include an acid-tongued high-school student (Mean Girls), a lovesick Southern belle (The Notebook) and a tireless investigative reporter (Spotlight), but last year she delivered a quietly moving performance in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, which marked a new turn in her understated style.
In Kelly Fremon Craig’s adaptation of Judy Blume’s novel, McAdams breathed new life into Margaret’s mother Barbara, a woman estranged from her conservative family after marrying a Jewish man (Benny Safdie). The actress’ best scenes are the hushed ones, moments in which her character, enveloped by the quiet of an empty house, releases the tension in her shoulders and indulges in her anxieties and uncertainties. It’s a Comedy Night Done Right reunion.
Steve Carell, star of “The Office,” will join previously announced Tina Fey, creator and star of “30 Rock,” in “The Four Seasons,” a Netflix comedy series based on the 1981 film of the same name. The streaming service announced Carell’s casting on Wednesday.
Fey and Carell previously starred in the 2010 comedy “Date Night,” in which they played a married couple. Their characters in “The Four Seasons” have not yet been announced.
The film follows three couples who go on quarterly vacations together, where the stresses and joys of marriage get magnified, especially after one of the men leaves his wife for a younger woman and begins bringing her on the trips. The film’s point-of-view couple is played by Alan Alda (who also wrote and directed) and Carol Burnett. The film was previously adapted into a short-lived sitcom in 1984.

Steve Carell is ready for a vacation after lending his dulcet tones to Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 and John Krasinski’s upcoming family comedy If. Thankfully, Netflix has a plane ticket with Carell’s name on it, so long as he’s willing to join the cast of The Four Seasons, a forthcoming comedy series led by Tina Fey.
The Four Seasons, a retread of the 1981 Universal movie of the same name, is a co-creation between Fey, her 30 Rock co-star Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. Details about Carell’s character remain a mystery, though the cast list for Alan Alda’s 1981 comedy could provide some clues. In 1981’s The Four Seasons, three couples vacation together every season. When prospective students of the University of Southern California visit the school, tour guides like to point out several noteworthy landmarks on campus: Heritage Hall and its multiple Heisman trophies on display, the symbolic Tommy Trojan statue and Norris Cinema Theatre, where students of all majors congregate each Thursday night to watch and discuss cinema with famed film critic Leonard Maltin.
The class, officially titled Ctcs-466: Theatrical Film Symposium, was founded by a fellow critic, Arthur Knight, in the early 1960s. He proposed filmmakers bring their latest work to campus for youthful, eager minds to absorb and discuss. Stewardship of the class passed to L.A. Times critic Charles Champlin in 1985, and eventually, the opportunity to take over one of USC’s most popular electives was presented to Maltin.

New data from Ampere Analysis shows the Apple TV+ library grew by 25% between February and March thanks to the addition of licensed movies.
The strategy for Apple TV+ has always been clear, even if outside observers didn’t necessarily agree with it. The streamer would showcase only Apple originals, a testament to the high production values and A-level stars the company is able to bring to its shows thanks to revenue generated by its device retailing segment. But that all changed in early March when the streamer imported more than 50 movies created by various other Hollywood studios for a short window. New data from Ampere Analysis suggests that perhaps Apple may not want to be so hasty in letting its next batch of licensed titles go if it decides to repeat the experiment again.

The entertainment industry is no stranger to drama and controversy. Most recently, Megan Thee Stallion, renowned for her sassy lyrics and empowering presence, is facing allegations from a photographer who claims he got wrongfully fired. The Grammy winner and Mean Girls actress is being sued by her former personal cameraman for allegedly creating a hostile and “abusive work environment”.
It is alleged that the rapper’s former employee was forced to witness her intimate acts with another woman. Does this imply that the photographer was fired unfairly for refusing to engage in the explicit act?

Anyway, Stallion, on the other hand, flatly denied the allegations, with her lawyer claiming it is an “employment claim” for monetary compensation.

Megan Thee Stallion’s former personal cameraman is taking the Grammy winner and Mean Girls actress and Roc Nation to court for creating an “intolerable” and “hostile abusive work environment.”
In a nine-claim complaint filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court, Emilio Garcia is accusing Megan Pete (Thee Stallion’s real name), her own company, her Hot Girl Touring and the Jay-Z founded entertainment platform of underpaying him, misclassifying him and causing “severe emotional distress and anxiety” due to overwork almost since the moment he started working for the “Plan” B singer in July 2018 (read the whole complaint here).
In particular, it seems an alleged explicit incident in the back of a moving car almost two years ago that proved the final straw – for all concerned:

Reba may have been right all along. The bartender from Spearfish, South Dakota, went home early on in season 2 of Fox’s reality dating series Farmer Wants a Wife. But before she left Brandon’s farm, she had some blunt words for Joy, one of his other daters.
Reba called Joy from ‘Farmer Wants a Wife’ ‘inauthentic’
In a memorable moment from the show’s Feb. 15 episode, Reba called out Joy, one of her rivals for Brandon’s affections, for being “inauthentic.” (One of Reba’s complaints about Joy? She smiled too much.)
“Like come on, like you think you’re genuine?” Reba asked Joy, who had just told Brandon that she considered herself “very sweet.”
“Like, I just can’t stand inauthenticity,” Reba said.
Reba’s dislike of Joy was so strong that she eventually decided to self-eliminate. After watching Joy “[shove] herself down his throat all the time” and...

Jenna Fischer put her acting skills to the test on the set of 2024’s Mean Girls. The actress revealed this week she filmed the movie with a broken shoulder.
“I shot for one day on Mean Girls, and then I didn’t have to shoot for a month,” Fischer told People. “And in that month I went on a ski trip and I fell on a sidewalk and I broke my shoulder. So I had to shoot the rest of the movie with a very newly broken shoulder.”
Fischer played Ms. Heron, the daughter of protagonist Cady (Angourie Rice) in the musical movie. After she returned with her arm in a sling, the actress said the crew got creative in accommodating the injury.
“If you notice in the movie, I am exclusively gesturing with my left arm,” she said. “It was the wildest experience. So a big part of my...
