The executive producers of critically acclaimed BBC prison drama Time have launched their own scripted production operation.
River Pictures has been launched as the latest producer in the BBC Studios stable and will be led by Andrew Morrissey and Michael Parke. They were previously exec producers at the BBC’s commercial division and worked on both seasons of Jimmy McGovern’s BAFTA-winning Time, the latest season of which stars The Last of Us‘ Bella Ramsey, and all three seasons of RTÉ’s Irish drama Smother.
Scripted label River will have bases in London and Liverpool, taking inspiration from the Thames and Mersey rivers that run through those cities, respectively, in its naming. The company will look to showcase “strong regional voices” in its output when it opens its doors before the end of the year.

The Irish government set out its 2024 budget this afternoon, which included a surprise shift to the country’s tax incentive structure.
Irish Film and TV productions are now able to claim the country’s 32% tax break on eligible expenditure up to €125m, raised from €70m.
Screen Ireland, the national agency for the Irish screen industry, welcomed the increase and set out plans to support new initiatives and facilitate production across the country. The plans include the launch of a new Creative Clusters Programme for 2024 targeting emerging screen talent and communities across the country, with a pilot scheme proposed for County Cork.
“In a landscape where global film and TV production budgets have reached an all-time high, the increase in the eligible expenditure cap will allow Ireland to attract a wider range of high-quality, larger scale production,” said Susan Bergin, Chair of the Board of Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland.

When the 2023 BAFTA nominations were unveiled on Jan. 19, one of the main talking points — alongside the standout success of All Quiet on the Western Front — was the domination of Ireland.
The 10 nominations amassed by Martin McDonagh’s awards season favorite The Banshees of Inisherin included a clean sweep of the performance categories, with the film’s four main cast — Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan — all finding slots. With Aftersun’s Paul Mescal and Good to You, Leo Grande’s Daryl McCormack (also a Rising Star nominee) joining Farrell on the leading actor shortlist, BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip noted on the day that half of the category was Irish (“Although it wasn’t one of our targets,” she told THR).

Berlin-based sales agency Picture Tree Intl. has shared with Variety the trailer for the Austrian horror movie Smother by up-and-coming director Achmed Abdel-Salam.
The film centers on Michi, a young mother and former alcoholic. After the sudden death of her estranged father, she decides to stay in the inherited summer house for a few days with her small daughter Hanna, hoping to regain the motherly trust she lost.
“During the first night, long-repressed memories of her childhood overshadowed by her mother’s suicide start to haunt her. Trying to numb herself again with alcohol only drives her daughter Hanna further away and accelerates Michi’s paranoid state. When her demons also start to threaten her daughter, Michi must finally confront them to save her.”
The Glitter and Doom production is tentatively set for a local theatrical release in early 2023, notes the site. The film is heading to this week’s AFM in Santa Monica.

Ireland has long been known as a nation of storytellers, home to giants of literature and theater such as Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett, W.B. Yeats and James Joyce.
In recent years, Ireland’s storytelling tradition has started to thrive in the screen industries too. Indigenous and co-production successes include John Crowley’s “Brooklyn,” Lenny Abrahamson’s “Room,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Lobster” and “The Favourite,” Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart’s Oscar-nominated animated feature “Wolfwalkers,” and the hit TV series “Normal People.”
The country has also become a magnet for international production, lured by fiscal incentives, stunning Irish locations and highly regarded crews. Apple TV series “Foundation” – the largest production to film in Ireland to date – wrapped last year. So too did Ridley Scott’s upcoming historical epic “The Last Duel.” Netflix’s “Vikings: Valhalla” is due to wrap in June.

Paul Mescal emerged as one of the breakout stars of 2020 thanks to his performance in BBC and Hulu drama “Normal People.”
Ireland has seen a slew of such acting talent establish themselves in recent years, like Jessie Buckley with her star turn as the pregnant wife of a doomed Russian fireman in “Chernobyl” and Barry Keoghan, who won attention with lead roles in two 2017 films, “Killing of a Sacred Deer” and “Dunkirk.” Keoghan is now BAFTA-nominated for “Calm with Horses,” as is Niamh Algar, whose credits include “The Virtues” and “Raised by Wolves.” Elsewhere Domhnall Gleeson has made a name for himself as General Dux in recent “Star Wars” films, and also in “The Revenant” and “Ex Machina.”
Among the new generation of actors to watch are Fionn O’Shea, chosen as one of the Berlin Film Festival’s Shooting Stars of 2021. A “Normal People” alumnus, O’Shea will next be...
