The Millennium Docs Against Gravity Festival, taking place in seven cities in Poland from Friday to May 19 and then online from May 21 to July 3, has grown exponentially in the last few years. In fact it is now, as the people behind it proclaim, the largest film festival in Poland.
Artistic director Karol Piekarczyk explains, “There is a culture of watching films and of watching films with subtitles in Poland. There are a lot of arthouse cinemas, in comparison to the U.K. for example. Even in small cities.”
Piekarczyk has worked for the festival for the past seven years and this edition will be his fourth as artistic director. He sees his job as “reminding everyone that our priority is and has always been the audience. However, we are a documentary festival, and whether we like it or not, audiences mainly choose films based on topic. We as programmers focus more on the quality.

Ninja Theory is all geared up for their upcoming game, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. However, it seems like the gaming community is not hyped for it. Priced at $49.99, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II may seem like a rip-off for gamers since the game has a shorter runtime than its predecessors, and some believe that it will lack the replayability aspect.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II
People on social media have started to compare the game to Elden Ring‘s upcoming Dlc, Shadow of the Erdtree, because they fall in the same price bracket and it is safe to say that there is a lot of anticipation for it. In a way, this is an advantage for Ninja Theory as these discussions have slowly put the spotlight on Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.

The Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival is coming off a successful — and at times turbulent — 26th edition, wrapping “amidst an explosive ambiance with episodes of violence and intolerance.”
In a post-festival report, TiDF says 66,000 spectators and visitors participated in the event this year, an increase of 16 percent over 2023. The festival ran from March 7-17 in Greece’s second largest city, nestled in a gulf of the Aegean Sea.
“This year’s TiDF hosted a great number of premieres, exciting talks and special events, and welcomed the internationally acclaimed artist Dimitris Papaioannou,” the festival noted in its report. “Moreover, it bestowed honorary Golden Alexanders to the Academy Award-winning Spanish filmmaker Fernando Trueba and the Greek film director, screenwriter, author and translator Panayotis Evangelidis.”
TiDF hosted more than 300 in-person screenings at several venues, as well as showcasing 133 documentaries through the festival’s online platform. The concurrent Agora film market played host to the...

Iranian filmmaker Farahnaz Sharifi’s “My Stolen Planet,” an intimate family portrait of life during Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution, won the Golden Alexander at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival on Sunday, bringing a close to an emotional and politically charged week in Greece’s second city.
Using both the director’s personal archives and 8mm recordings of strangers’ lives, the film — which world premiered in the Berlin Film Festival’s Panorama strand — uses an essayistic style to present the joy and vitality of life in Tehran in the 1970s, in contrast with the oppression imposed on the Iranian people by the country’s hardline regime.

This post contains spoilers for "Madame Web."
When Marvel was in dire financial straits in the late 1990s, the company licensed the film rights to Spider-Man to Sony Pictures. When Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" became a gigantic hit in 2002, it was clear Sony would do whatever it takes to keep those rights in-house and never let them revert back to Marvel. There was simply too much money to be made with that character (and the literally 900-plus other Spider-Man adjacent characters they also had the rights to). Sony has since collaborated with Marvel Studios on the Tom Holland Spider-Man films, but until they figure out what the next official Spider-Man adventure is going to be on the big screen, the company is still contractually obligated to release a Spider-Man or Spider-Man adjacent movie every few years to retain those valuable rights.

Berlin-based Rise and Shine World Sales has acquired international rights to Lidia Duda’s documentary “Forest,” which will have its world premiere at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival.
Previously noticed at Ji.hlava, where it picked up the New Visions Award. Duda’s film focuses on a Polish family living right next to the oldest European forest, trying to create a safe haven for their children. But soon, they start noticing refugees stranded in the wilderness, unwelcome both in Poland and Belarus.
“From the beginning, we felt a strong connection to the story,” Rise and Shine manager Anja Dziersk says.
“The encounters of the family with the refugees, in the midst of the forest, bring world politics down to a very personal experience. It reflects on all of us: ‘What would I do in the same situation?’ Lidia Duda manages to create a film which is subjective yet highly relatable.”

Michael Beach was in his late twenties and primed for a breakout performance when he landed the role of Pluto in Carl Franklin's "One False Move." This was not supposed to be that performance. It was a low-budget crime flick from a couple of unknown screenwriters named Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson that was intended to go straight to video. But when L.A. Weekly journo Anne Thompson caught an early screening, she spread the word to her critic colleagues. Once the Los Angeles Times' Sheila Benson and the Chicago Sun-Times' Roger Ebert began raving about the film, the distributor, I.R.S. Releasing, opted for a small theatrical release. The movie wound up on multiple year-end top 10 lists and earned five Independent Spirit Award nominations (with Franklin beating out newcomer Quentin Tarantino for Best Director).

From auditioning for “every John Hughes movie that I never got in” to having Oliver Stone yell at her in a helicopter over her pronunciation of “’Nam,” Robin Wright confesses she’s seen Hollywood from all sides over the years.

“Forest,” an Italian eco-themed animation film about deforestation, has scored some strong pre-sales for Rome-based True Colours at the Cannes Marché du film.
The still-in-production 3-D animation feature – the protagonist of which is a young mushroom named Fey – has been picked up for roughly 20 territories by Top Film Distribution which will distribute “Forest” in Ukraine, Cis, the Baltics, and Eastern European countries including former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Poland, Czech and Slovak Republics, Romania, and Hungary.
Helmed by Luca Della Grotta and Francesco Dafano, the film is produced by Italy’s Al One, the same team that previously spawned 2020 similarly themed animation feature “Trash” that sold in more than 30 countries.
“Forest” – which is the first animation title on the True Colours slate and a rare case of an Italian animation feature film – was presented last year as an in-development project at specialized co-production platforms including Cartoon Movie in the French city of Bordeaux.

Clark has released his tenth studio album, the Thom Yorke-produced Sus Dog, via Throttle Records, and has shared a music video for the song, “Medicine,” which features vocals from Yorke. Watch the music video for the single below.
Sus Dog was executive produced by Yorke, and features Clark going in a new direction. The first album of his to “fully focus on his voice,” the record shows the 43-year-old electronic musician in a more intimate, uplifting setting than his previous work.
The single “Medicine” demonstrates this — beneath a slow, stuttering beat and a bed of retro synths, Clark’s smooth, airy voice resonates with intimacy. In a press statement, he described the song as being about “a perfect day in nature with my wife, but also chancers, dread of time, humans as animals, addiction, the inner judge, and how it’s always other people’s narcissism, right?”

Chris Clark’s Sus Dog tries on a number of stylistic tics—from stuttering electronics to eerie vocals—that recall those of its executive producer, Thom Yorke, but rarely finds a means of organically incorporating them into the Idm veteran’s bass-heavy sound. The zippy “Town Crank” and sulky title track struggle to employ Clark’s limited voice effectively, proving to be little more than imitations of Yorke’s saturnine shtick on albums like Anima.
“Alyosha” starts things off promisingly, with Clark’s hazy atmospherics and vocal warbling setting an alien tone. But he quickly switches to falsetto just as the track begins to pick up steam, and his wispy vocals and repeated mantras about how someone is “lying” to themselves while “telling everybody else the truth” clash with the track’s rhythmically darting instrumentation. Elsewhere, “Forest” starts off with a vast, contemplative soundscape courtesy of the Budapest Art Orchestra,...

System of a Down hosted their only scheduled performance of 2023 at Las Vegas’ inaugural Sick New World festival on Saturday, and the top-billed heavy metal outfit did not hold back for their first live set in over a year.
The Grammy-winning rock quartet, who have only made sporadic on-stage appearances since their contentious hiatus in 2006, closed the main stage for the single-day event and unleashed one blistering hit after another, including the trio of breakout singles, “Chop Suey!” (which still scares singer Serj Tankian to this day), “Toxicity,” and “Aerials,” from 2001’s Toxicity.
The band also revived several rarities from their 1998 self-titled debut like “Soil,” “Darts,” “Suite-Pee,” and “Peephole,” the last receiving its first live rendition in 10 years. The stacked setlist truly spanned the group’s whole career as they played the early era demo track “Dam” along with their two 2020 comeback tracks, “Genocidal Humanoidz” and “Protect the Land.” Watch...

In “Dark Story” the French star, whose recent credits include “The Crusade” directed by her husband Louis Garrel, plays Carla (first look image above), the ex-wife of Vito Semeraro, a banker who beat her when they were together and is the father of her three children. Italian sales company True Colours is launching sales in Cannes on this psychological noir that marks the sophomore feature by D’Agostini whose 2019 debut drama “The Champion” – a soccer dramedy about a young male soccer star and a shy academic who becomes his tutor – sold widely via the same outfit. Andrea Carpenzano stars in “Dark Story” alongside Casta.

"He's there because he has a spiritual connection with that forest." Madman Films in Australia has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary titled The Giants, which is both a biopic about an activist + a beautiful exploration of the natural environment of forests. After premiering at the Adelaide Film Festival last year, it's set to open in Australia this April, with no other international dates confirmed yet. The Giants explores the intertwined fates of trees and humans in this poetic portrait of environmentalist Bob Brown and the Forest. From a seedling to forest elder: the film is a masterclass that draws on Bob's 50 years of inspiring activism, from the Franklin campaign for Tasmania's last wild river, to today's battle for the Tarkine rain forest (see Google Maps) also found on Tasmania. Told in Bob's own words, his story is interwoven with the extraordinary life cycle of Australia's giant trees, bought...

The bell just rang, school is out for summer. Maybe it’s out forever—leaving school behind as our heroes and antiheroes spend long, hot days laying about in the city or countryside, anticipating college dreams or fearing a return to the classroom. Or, more likely, not thinking of studies at all, just anticipating the next summer day and how to score more thrills. As the season winds down, here is a mix that is an ode to the teenage summer—so wonderfully captured in many films—a choice selection that evokes endless possibilities: sweat, love, passion, booze, drugs, and questions of the great unknown just around the corner. The characters of these summertime stories are either breaking hearts, heartbroken, running from hell or somewhere lost in between. Some favorite moments include the confusion, chaos and otherworldly essence of Gheorghe Zamfir’s flute from the unforgettable score for Peter Weir...

The Locarno Film Festival is following the lead of A-list neighbor Berlin and going gender-neutral.
From 2023 on, Locarno’s acting honors will no longer be categorized according to gender — best actor and best actress — but be gender-neutral “best performance” and “best supporting performance” awards.
For the 76th edition of the Locarno Film Festival, set for August 2-12, 2023, the festival’s two main competitions, Concorso internazionale and Concorso Cineasti del presente, will each present two awards for the best performances.
Berlin was the first big film festival to take this step, last year handing out its first gender-neutral Silver Bears for best leading performance, which went to Maren Eggert for her starring role in Maria Schrader’s sci-fi screwball comedy I’m Your Man, and best supporting performance to Lilla Kizlinger for Bence Fliegauf’s Forest — I See You Everywhere. Looking back from the 21st century, it's hard to see Humphrey Bogart as anything less than a skilled, accomplished actor. With such a wide body of influential work, it's no surprise that Bogart has made a lasting impact and inspired the next generation of actors. But things didn't always look so good for the suave actor, especially when he was just starting out.
Despite the myriad of successes that Bogart would later experience on the big screen, the actor got his start on Broadway, working on plays like "Meet the Wife" and "Invitation to a Murder." Though he worked on a few films during this time, the majority of Bogart's early success came from stage work. However, the sudden onset of heavy debts would soon put the actor under considerable stress, significantly jeopardizing his career.

The film starts with a recitation of a story that goes like a fairy-tale and by the time we are introduced to our protagonist, we realize in the back of our minds that this film is essentially a fairy-tale in itself. In fact, it is up to the author of the opening fable (Kauff) that plays a significant role in how Xiao-Wei’s love story turns out. Bracketed within the lore of a Forest Prince and Mermaid, this movie has a surprisingly simple plot, that is sensitive and heartrending in it’s portrayal of a 27 year old (with Down’s syndrome) falling in love for the first time.
What is interesting to note is that throughout the film, Tien Niu is dressed in white, symbolizing her as an almost saint-like, holy mother figure that goes so far as to disturb the relationships she has with other people in her life.

“I’m not sure you even understand what we’re really doing here,” quantum physicist Katie announces late in the new sci-fi thriller miniseries Devs.
Katie (Alison Pill) is addressing her coworkers on the eponymous project, a new technology allegedly so revolutionary and powerful that her boss, Forest (Nick Offerman), is willing to have people killed to protect it. She’s worried that none of her colleagues fully grasp the nature or implications of what their shiny new toy does. But she could just as easily be looking out at the audience in that moment.
