Millennial and Gen Z consumers watch less traditional television than their elders, and the pay-tv sector continues to face a seeming death by a thousand cuts with the steady sting of cord-cutting: A projected 6.6 million U.S. households are expected to have canceled pay-tv service by the end of 2020.
Amid this challenging backdrop, what’s a cable programmer like A+E Networks — whose core business relies on cable and satellite affiliate fees and TV ad revenue — to do?
This year, A+E has doubled down on a digital strategy with Snap, aimed at cultivating new fans. Do you believe that monsters actually exist? To some people, that may seem like a ridiculous question. To others, it may be just the tip of the iceberg. History Channel’s MonsterQuest sets out to uncover the truth. As the title suggests, the show seeks to investigate some of the world’s oldest monster related myths including Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster. Sure, there have been plenty of other series that explored these things in the past, but MonsterQuest uses science and the latest technology to help find answers to some of the most intriguing questions. If you don’t believe in

Today's featured cryptid is a reptilian twist on rural monster lore: where the Sasquatch and Yeti legends (and their many regional offshoots) involve sightings of an ape-like humanoid lurking in the wilderness, suggesting a possible ancestor to modern primates or even a close relative of humans, the “Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp” is also described as man-sized and walking upright, but with unique features resembling those of an alligator. First reported in the late '80s, the creature has been allegedly sighted numerous times, and has now become a figure of pop culture among many of the residents of Lee County, South Carolina. Beginning with multiple sightings in the summer of 1988, the most consistent description of the Lizard Man is his incredible strength and aggressiveness; many accounts describe him attacking cars in the area around Scape Ore Swamp, sometimes inflicting severe damage to the vehicles with his teeth and claws.

The world of the paranormal appears set to increase exponentially as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Jason Blum, producer of Paranormal Activity , has teamed with George Plamondon and Betsy Schechter, the pair behind the television series "Paranormal State." Together, they've scooped up the rights to the classic supernatural magazine Fate and are interested in bringing its decades of supernatural tales to the big and small screen. Launched in 1948, Fate is described on the magazine's official site as follows: Six decades before the History Channel's Monster Quest, A&E's Paranormal State, late-night radio's Coast to Coast Am, and countless websites, blogs, books, and movies began captivating audiences with true tales of the paranormal . there was...

It is that time of year again when Dread Central pays its respects to those who have worked in our beloved genre and made it to the red carpet on Oscar night 2011. The genre was in rare form when it came to the nominations. Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan was up for the gold in multiple categories (best picture, best actress, cinematography, and direction); even The Wolfman was on the short-list for best make-up. And win we did.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves because therein lie the gems of VHS past for a large share of both the winners and folks who were nominated. Highlights include a win for Melissa Leo (nominated two years ago for Frozen River), whom we remember best as Judith 'MaMa' Baer in Deadtime Stories. And who could forget Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho? My fellow fright fiends, he brought home the gold last night.

Episode Number: 7012 (January 20, 2011)
Guests: Chris Matthews
Segments: Rush Limbaugh Speaks Chinese, State Budget Shortfalls – Christine Todd Whitman, 50th Anniversary of JFK’s Inaugural Address
Videos: Thursday, January 20, 2011
Tonight’s show was yet another stellar show in this week’s streak of wonderful shows. The Rush Limbaugh segment showed the utter hypocrisy of Limbaugh, and the Kennedy/Pundit montage was brilliant. I thought that the banter between guest Chris Matthews and Stephen Colbert flowed very naturally, and was challenging without being overpowering. Christine Todd Whitman was a bit dry for me though, but then again, I live in Texas so any talk of state’s issues makes me think of Rick Perry which gives me a pain in my right temple. [Joke #1: How can you tell if a person is from Texas? They'll tell you. Joke #2: How can you tell if a person is from Texas? They don't see that #1 is a joke.]

A few months ago CinemaSpy chatted exclusively with Josh Gates about his adventurous work as presenter of Syfy's paranormal and cryptozoology investigation series Destination Truth (here). The show takes Gates and his team to some of the remotest and most iconic locations on Earth to look for evidence of strange creatures and supernatural phenomena. Previously, the series aired on Wednesday nights alongside the phantom-chasing Ghost Hunters. The premiere of the new season tonight, however, will see Destination Truth in its new slot on Thursdays.
CinemaSpy recently had the opportunity to chat to Gates again when he took part in a Q&A session to talk about the new season of Destination Truth. In the conversation Gates discusses highlights from his new adventures, what it is like to film at night in some of the creepiest places on the planet, traveling as an American and what it means to be a...
