A fairly generic action thriller...
paul_haakonsen18 January 2023
I had never heard about this movie prior to sitting down to watch it here in 2023. But I figured I would give it a chance, as it had Tom Berenger on the cast list.

For an action thriller then writers Michael Paré, D. Glase Lomond, Joshua A. Cohen and Javier Reyna managed to put together a fair enough script. I mean, "Black Warrant" was a watchable movie for sure, but it was a fairly generic script and storyline though. Now, I am not saying that it makes the movie bad or anything, not at all, but it just makes for a movie that feels like the majority of every other action thriller out there. So yeah, you're not exactly in for an outstanding movie experience here from director Tibor Takács.

The acting performances in "Black Warrant" are okay, and they do have some good talents on the cast list, with the likes of Tom Berenger, Jeff Fahey and Cam Gigandet.

"Black Warrant" is suitable for a single viewing, but that is also just about all there is to it, because the writers didn't really spice up the formula with anything noteworthy.

The action sequences in "Black Warrant" were so-so. They worked out well enough, but they weren't exactly thrilling or particularly exciting to sit through. Tom Berenger is in his 70s, and it is showing on the screen; not that his acting is bad or anything, but he just doesn't really musters a whole lot of intense action in this movie.

My rating of "Black Warrant" lands on a five out of ten stars.

who's your daddy

Warning: Spoilers
Tom berenger. Remember him. Way long ago, he was on the verge of real stardom. It didn't quite happen. Who knows why? Anyway its nice to see him. And here he is in a turkey. Its stupid, dopey, ridiculous, non sensical. You keep saying why did they say that . Or do that. Whatever. And yet, and yet. There are moments of real tension and excitement. The movie looks good and the direction is just fine. Things certainly move right along. Even the story is all right. The acting on the other hand stinks. Or let's just say there's little of it. So there you have it. Not worth plunking down bucks at the box office, but at home on a saturday nite for free. Why not.

Barely earns a "B" rating, somewhat miscast, clumsy dialogue.
lenwenzellw20 January 2023
Black Warrant has some fairly decent acting, with Jeff Fahey taking the best acting spot in this film. His acting is pretty much spot on. I completely disagree with Tom Berenger being cast in the lead role as a government hitman coming out of retirement to do one last job; its not as if his acting is not up to the task, it is. How ever his age is entirely against him. The role calls for someone fit and athletic, and Berenger is anything but. In an early scene Berenger reaches down to pull up the flooring of his yacht where his weapons are in hiding. You can almost hear the arthritic creaking of his joints as he feebly reaches for his weapons. You can note where the director cut the scene to avoid showing this unsuitability. Then there are the action scenes, what there are of them that is. Although there are a few, he is just not convincing in the role which calls for a fit athletic man, who even when older would still be fit to perform his sniping tasks. A sniper needs to be fit, and incredibly disciplined to hold motionless for hours, and to have the precision needed to take the shot, and ex-fill the location. Berenger looks barely fit enough to swing a golf club.

Then there is Cam Gigadet, who just doesn't have the acting chops for this role. Lots of clumsy dialogue through out the film, lowers the quality of the film, which to me barely earns a "B" rating.

The director for allowing the camera to roam, the producer for allowing it go out and casting. What a stinker of a movie. Fire the cast and remake the movie with actors. Might be ok then given it's just another save-the-world meme. I'm not into more words ... The director for allowing the camera to roam, the producer for allowing it go out and casting. How About Tony?
nogodnomasters3 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Tony Vanowen (Cam Gigandet) and Juan (Joe Chacon) are American DEA agents working in Tijuana. During a warehouse raid they failed to find any drugs and Juan gets shot by Zico (Rafael Cabrera) because he didn't want to go back to prison. They discover that the real identity of the boss is a man named Polat (Peter Nikkos) who is wanted all over the world. Polat offers to turn in his boss and the whole operation for a deal. Tony is going to escort Polat to the American border to work out details with his lawyer and hand him over to the FBI. Meanwhile there is an elderly retired man living on a boat. Nick (Tom Berenger) is visited on his boat by LaRusso (Jeff Fahey) of the NSA. LaRusso has 3 "black warrants" or kill contracts for Nick. Nick comes out of retirement to kill the guy Vanowen has in custody and his crime bosses.

The plot has a slight twist. Helena Haro provides the eye candy. Not a bad action film. Ends with everybody eating together like F&F.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

A fairly decent watchable B film.
Top_Dawg_Critic19 January 2023
It's slim pickings for anything actually watchable in the B-films crime-action category these days, especially since Bruce Willis has been in almost every one of them, but this one was actually enjoyable. It could've easily been much better with a better director - I'd say a more experienced director, but it seems Tibor Takacs having directed fifty films hasn't improved his filmmaking. Most scenes lacked urgency, and better cast direction was needed, and the overall feel of the film felt like it was directed by an amateur filmmaker. The story however, albeit bits and pieces from other better films, still was an enjoyable one-time watch. The twist was well executed, and the story had a consistently decent flow to it, aside from a few plot and technical issues. The cinematography was decent, and the score surprisingly fitting and bearable, a rare find in B films these days. All casting and performances were spot-on and it's good to see the iconic Tom Berenger still has his acting chops. It's a fun no-regrets one-time watch if you're a fan of this genre, and it's a well deserved 7/10 from me.

Reunion
lavatch29 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
When the characters in this film have a "black warrant," they do not read the perp his rights ... they just start shooting!

Despite the well-choreographed action scenes, the film proceeded at a sluggish pace. But it picked up steam when the two characters working at cross purposes recognize that they are father and son.

With the setting in Mexico, Tony Vanowen is a DEA agent on the trail of a terrorist planning to set off a doomsday device. The old timer Nick Falconi is simultaneously brought out of retirement to kill the key witness in the custody of Vanowen.

Then, suddenly, the two men have their recognition scene! Nick had turned the upbringing of his young son over to relatives because of his dangerous work as a hired killer. Finally, decades later, they are reunited in a common cause. The villains in the film were cardboard characters who frequently go down like bowling pins.

There was a good love connection established in the relationship of Tony and Mina. But the main attraction is that of father and son who seem to form a superb partnership in the execution of black warrants.

I Liked It
januszlvii30 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Black Warrant is a fun film, and I liked it. If you are looking for an Oscar winner this is not it. But if you like action, beautiful women ( especially Mexican Chef Mina), and believe it or not humor then go to Amazon Prime and check it out. The term Black Warrent is about knocking off bad guys by any means necessary and that includes assassination. The bad guys certainly are deserving of this. You have Mexican cartel members ( this takes place in Tijuana, Mexico) and even worse Middle Eastern terrorists out to get a device that can cause blackouts. The main star Tom Berlinger is out to knock off the baddies and his son is a DEA agent. Spoilers ahead: Do they succeed? Of course, and does the son end up with Mina?? Of Course, but how they get there is why you watch. Again I liked it and give it 8/10 stars.

Decent action flic
lampkingary-3369616 August 2023
Regarding Tom Bérenger, I can't criticise any actor's work of 45 years, 70+ feature films, and an equal number a of tv appearance from soap operas to self-produced mini-series, with an Emmy and a Golden Globe in the pocket. And, an Academy Award nomination for best-supporting actor, as Sgt. Barnes in Platoon, an incredible performance which was the best in a movie loaded with great performances . Also, a bunch of good rolls in other notable films. All this, and people actual say, but he could have been a star. HE IS A STAR IN MY BOOK!

Black Warrant, a B movie that delivers an interesting story, good main character acting, with a nice turn by the supporting cast. The story moves along, and I found the plot twists kept the energy up and interesting. Action scenes were well staged and believable, but intense enough to not be for the squeamish. The action genre of police, spy, terrorist, government agents with a little human interest thrown, works pretty well. A solid 7, and I suggest you don't even bother with the so-called critics that post a 5 or less.

Pretty Descent Action Movie
stevendbeard12 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I saw Black Warrant, starring Tom Berenger-the Sniper movies, The Big Chill; Cam Gigandet-The Magnificent Seven_2016, the Twilight movies; Helena Haro-El juego de las llaves_tv, 40 Years Young and Jeff Fahey-Alita: Battle Angel, Lost_tv.

This is a pretty descent action movie. Tom plays a retired special ops agent that is living on a boat, taking it easy, living the good life, when Jeff-his former handler-comes calling and tells Tom that he is the only person that can handle the job of taking on 3 Black Warrants at once. A black warrant is an elimination job where the subject is killed, with no chance of him telling his side to a jury. Cam plays a DEA agent working a case concerning a cyber terrorist who has a machine to control the power grids of entire cities. After his partner is killed, Cam crosses paths with Tom and they realize there is a connection between their missions. Helena plays an innocent employee of one of the bad guys that gets recruited by Cam to help his case. Storywise, there's not much new here-you've probably seen it before in other movies-but it is entertaining.

It's rated R for violence and language and has a running time of 1 hour & 34 minutes.

I don't know if I would buy it on DVD but it would be worth a good streaming.
