There are only two days left until Cannes 2023 comes to a close, and much like yesterday, things have seemed a bit quiet. The movie on most everyone’s lips, at least if social media is any indicator, was Trần Anh Hùng’s period drama “The Pot au Feu,” a feature that, according to TheWrap’s Ben Croll in his review, “might very well be the most handsomely shot and soothingly felt serving of art house food porn ever brought to screen. It’s about to become your mother’s favorite film, and it’s an absolute delight.”
But before the screening started, as Variety reported, a demonstration in support of Indigenous land rights took place on the film’s red carpet. It was led by the directors and actors of “The Buriti Flower,” a film showing in Un Certain Regard directed by Portugal’s João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora.

Despite a predictably effusive standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival, where it premiered in September, Andrew Dominik’s Blonde saw its awards potential quickly downgraded by Oscar handicappers once the reviews began posting. While critics had praise for Ana de Armas’ fiercely committed performance as a bruised and battered Marilyn Monroe, the consensus about the film itself — the Netflix release eventually scored a meager 42 percent on Rotten Tomatoes — was that it failed to recognize Monroe’s intelligence, determination and undeniable talent.
Writing for Time.com, Stephanie Zacharek observed, “Blonde allows no room for the real-life Marilyn’s multidimensionality, her capacity for delight as well as her deep depressions. Actors are always more than the sum of their parts, and Marilyn Monroe especially, as both a performer and a persona, is too complex to be reduced to parts in the first place. Her...

Prominent figures, including Judi Dench, have demanded that the drama carry a disclaimer to make clear that the events of the series aren’t entirely factual. While The Crown actor Jonathan Pryce, has called these reactions to the show “hugely disappointing”, claiming that viewers know it’s a drama, not a documentary.
Some of the storylines in season five are pretty close to the truth. Others, not so much.

The Crown loves a metaphor. In the latest season, everyone is wondering what to do with the clapped-out royal yacht Britannia. It’s the Nineties, and the monarchy is looking a bit worn out, too. “It shouldn’t come as a surprise she’s falling apart, she’s a creature of another age… in many ways she’s obsolete,” says Prince Philip, definitely talking about a big, expensive boat. “Don’t say that!” the Queen flaps, definitely also talking about a boat. The show is filled with analogies so bold you could spot them from space. In another zinger, Diana’s Panorama interview is compared to Guy Fawkes’s gunpowder plot. And yet people still love to take this show very, very literally. Why, when it’s so clearly on the royals’ side?

This post contains spoilers for "House of the Dragon" episode 8.
If fantasy stories involving characters foretelling the future have taught us anything, it's that prophecies are usually bad news. At their best, they inspire tyrants like Lord Voldemort to bring about their own downfall. But most of the time, they spur would-be decent people like Macbeth and Anakin Skywalker to embrace their worst impulses, transforming them into the very kind of oppressors they once put their life on the line to defeat. So of course "House of the Dragon," a show about the collapse of House Targaryen over the 200 years leading up to "Game of Thrones," should miss its best shot at a happy ending thanks to a prophecy.
The series' latest episode kicks off with a "Previously on..." that recaps King Viserys' (Paddy Considine) conversation with a young Rhaenyra about "The Song of Ice and Fire" and the vision...

Fair warning: the phrase “Capra-esque” might get a real workout in the ensuing review.
Late great comedy director Ivan Reitman’s inventive political comedy Dave (1993), starring Kevin Kline in a dual role as both a sleazy president and his kindhearted regular-guy doppelgänger, stands as a shining beacon of sunny cinematic optimism from a happier time in this country’s history.
Frank Capra, that beloved helmer of movies focused on underdog triumphs during Hollywood’s Golden Age, emerges as a clear influence guiding Reitman through Dave, with a winning script from eventual Pleasantville director Gary Ross. The picture also leans heavily on Mark Twain’s The Prince and The Pauper, in that a regular guy who happens to look a lot like a current political leader is enlisted to switch places with said leader. This time, it’s temp agency owner Dave Kovic (Kline), hired to cover for corrupt and cruel U.

Exclusive: HBO Max has opted not to renew its animated comedy series The Prince for a second season.
“The Prince is not moving forward,” HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys confirmed to Deadline during an interview tied to TCA.
The move is not surprising. The Prince, a biting look at the British royals through the eyes of Prince George, the youngest heir to the throne (voiced by series creator Gary Janetti), has drawn criticism for satirizing the royal children and especially its take on 8-year-old Prince George, who is portrayed as entitled and conniving.
Additionally, the series’ planned late-spring launch was delayed following Prince Philip’s April 9 death at the age of 99. The animated comedy’s 12 episodes were ultimately dropped at once with little fanfare in July. There are no plans for the series to be shopped elsewhere by 20th TV Animation.

Chilean filmmaker Roberto Doveris’ “Phantom Project” vies for the top Tiger prize at the Rotterdam film festival’s online edition this year and leads a robust Chilean delegation in other sections of the festival. Co-produced by Doveris’ Niña Niño Films and Aura Sinclair’s Agencia Rekia (“La Isla de las Gaviotas”), “Phantom Project” (previously titled “Ghost Project”) has world premiered at the fest, which began Jan. 26 and wraps on Feb. 6. Variety has snagged an exclusive first look at its teaser. Patra Spanou Film is handling international sales rights.

Time is running out to stream films like “Lincoln,” “The Fisher King” and “He Got Game” on HBO Max. Below is the complete list of everything leaving HBO and HBO Max in January 2022, which includes some classic “Planet of the Apes” films, Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning “Argo” and 1988’s “Married to the Mob,” among others. Most of these titles leave the streaming service on Jan. 31, but departing HBO and HBO Max on Jan. 20 is a behind-the-scenes look at Guillermo del Toro’s new film “Nightmare Alley,” which is exclusively in theaters now.
If you’re looking for noteworthy titles to add to your watchlist before they depart, “Lincoln” is one of Steven Spielberg’s best, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” is a handsome and nail-biting spy thriller and “The Fisher King” is a great two-hander with Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams.

Chilean bio-musical series “Los Prisioneros” had its European debut at Madrid’s inaugural Iberseries Platino Industria on Sept. 28 where it screened in the event’s Chapter One sidebar.
Taking place in the mid ‘80s, the eight-episode show kicks off with the titular iconic band Los Prisioneros playing their sardonic protest songs to a rowdy, unappreciative crowd. It’s only when they perform at Chile’s then biggest entertainment show, “Sabado Gigante,” hosted by the equally iconic Don Francisco, that their career takes flight.
Episode one shows the key moments of their debut on the show and the start of their career, which later led to their persecution by the military regime and censorship on Chilean radio and television. To this day, their songs are anthems at protest rallies in the region, most recently in Chile and Colombia.
“Their songs have become ever more relevant, they still resonate to this day,...

Exclusive: Cobra Kai creators, executive producers and showrunners Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald have signed a big new four-year overall deal with the studio behind the hit Karate Kid sequel series, Sony Pictures Television.
When the trio signed their first overall deal with Sony Pictures TV in early 2019 and launched their Counterbalance Entertainment production company, Cobra Kai had just been renewed for a third season by YouTube. Since then, Sony TV successfully moved the series to Netflix where it has become a global hit, topping viewership charts and earning Season 4 and Season 5 renewals, along with landing four 2021 Emmy nominations for Season 3, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
Now, ahead of the Primetime Emmy Awards this month and Cobra Kai’s Season 4 premiere in December, Sony Pictures TV has stepped up with an early renewal of Counterbalance’s three-year overall deal for four more years.
Under the new pact, Hurwitz, Schlossberg and Heald,...

Beloved Scottish actor Alan Cumming, it turns out, almost had a role in the Harry Potter cinematic universe. He recently told The Telegraph (via The Independent) how, when producers on 2002’s “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” offered him a major role in the franchise as Hogwarts professor Gilderoy Lockhart, he told them to “f*ck off” due to disputes over his salary. (The role of Lockhart ultimately went to Kenneth Branagh.)
“I didn’t turn it down,” Cumming said. “I told them to f*ck off!”
Cumming also revealed that he was competing with Rupert Everett, with whom he shared the same agent, for the role. “They wanted me and Rupert Everett to do a screen test, and they said they couldn’t pay me more than a certain sum, they just didn’t have any more money in the budget,” Cumming said.

Gary Janetti’s Prince George is letting the world know he’s “doing Ok” during the coronavirus crisis ahead of his upcoming HBO Max animated series The Prince.
Family Guy producer Janetti shared the animated character’s message on Instagram Friday.
“Hey guys, it’s me, Prince George. Thought I’d show you all I’m doing Ok, sing “Imagine”, the cartoon character says as he chuckles. “Just kidding, just kidding. So out of touch. Cringe! Am I right? Anyway, I know self-isolating is difficult and we’re all sick of being stuck in the same 775 rooms, or, you know, studio apartment, it’s different for everyone.”
