Good Story, poorly executed
jono2008198512 January 2008
The idea for this movie was great, the script, acting, stunts (if you can call riding a trail bike at 5km/h a stunt) and camera work let the movie down, the dialog was terrible, in some instances repeating the same thing three times with the exact same lack of emotion, which led to Purgatory feeling very corny at times, especially with the swearing and hesitation from the actors where it almost seemed they were forgetting lines and then bursting out with some random piece of abuse that had just jumped into there heads. If you can see pass this the underlying story is actually pretty good, but everything that happened along the way was so cliché that there were no surprises. 2/10

Had potential but sadly it's wasted.

Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like this movie. I gave it more of chance then I have given most other low budget ventures because I kept hoping that the good story (or good concept for a story) wouldn't go to waste. Unfortunately the camera work, dialog and continuity are so bad that the anything good couldn't possibly have managed to survive.

Maybe thats a little harsh, the acting really isn't that bad. In fact it, aside from the story, is the only thing that sticks in my head as being good about this movie. Now back to the bad. The film from it's very beginning is loaded with flashbacks. In fact so many flashbacks that the plot gets confused and I actually had to question when events were taking place. It's clear that the filmmakers new this would happen because they tried to separate the present from the past by using blurry camera shots and echoed audio. However, the look of the rest of the movie is so bad that at times the flashbacks look pretty much like the everything else. The casting is a bit off as well, the guy who should be the hero spends his time running away and gets killed while the guy who should be the victim acts as the calm headed one. The movie is also full of a lot of pointless dialog and pointless moments. It's as if something is happening, we can hear it happening, we can see it happening but nothing ever really happens. I suppose like the rest of the problems with this movie that can be blamed on the camera work and the style of filming. I just feel as if their was a good movie here, but it's destroyed by the ultra low budget and complete lack of effort on the filmmakers part to ensure that what they were making was worth it.

I've screened two movies tonight, both left me sitting here wishing I had gone out for coffee instead.

Great Story, I Wasn't Disappointed

I saw this movie and really liked it. Compared to other low-budget movies, at least this one was interesting. The story was good and I felt the acting was credible. I really liked the actors that played the villains in this movie, it's scary to think that demented people like that probably do exist. It was nice to see a low-budget movie that has something to say and wasn't about exploitation or titillation (Sorry, but I can only take so many naked coed vampires!).

The situations seemed real and I liked that it was filmed outdoors, not just in someone's house. I though it was cool that it had a good music score rather than a collection of the director's favorite songs.

Could it have been better? Sure, but I wasn't disappointed.
