Jake is surprised by Amy's appearance, but she tells him she is experiencing a stomach pain, something Jake dismisses as non important. Even Paul notices a new aura around Amy. As they begin their session, both show a new maturity, perhaps, at least on the surface. When Dr. Weston asked Amy about whether she saw her doctor about the pregnancy, she tells him no. With that she gets up because the discomfort she is feeling. Jake gets up and he and Amy leave because he wants her to be checked.
After they leave, Paul notices a blood stain on the couch where Amy was sitting. It has all the indications Amy is having a miscarriage, but of course, it is too early to tell. Paul is concerned about the stain, and how it can be removed. He calls Kate, who obliges him, bringing cleansers to deal with the problem. Paul is being pessimistic thinking the stain will be permanent, while Kate knows best, she will get rid of it.
As Kate and Paul talk, it becomes clear they are having problems. Kate brings out the fact of Paul's inability to connect with his own children. He attributes it to the fact of his busy practice, something that Kate does not agree. Paul tells Kate about his visit to Gina, something that confounds his wife. Complicating their strained talk, Kate proceeds to tell Paul about an affair she has been having with a man. Paul becomes furious upon learning her deception. It is obvious their marriage is going a dangerous phase. When Kate leaves the office, something is clear, she was able to get rid of the blood stain.

This chapter was written by Merritt Johnson, and directed by the creator of the series, Rodrigo Garcia. This episode brings out Paul's vulnerability as faces his wife's confession of an affair he was not aware of. His family life also comes center stage as Kate accuses him of not being the father he is supposed to be and how he is missing the opportunity.
"In Therapy" strength is in the excellent performances Mr. Garcia gets from his principals. Gabriel Byrne was a wise choice to play Paul Weston. Michelle Forbers, seen as Kate in the program, has some good opportunity to shine in today's show. Embeth Davidtz and Josh Charles played Amy and Jake effortlessly.
