Character study of boring people
vasiln30 January 2023
GF and BF get lost in the woods. They hallucinate things. Their phones don't work, duh. Maybe something supernatural is happening?

Bring out the Fear focuses almost entirely on its two characters, probably for budget reasons, and there's nothing wrong with that; when you have limitations, it's smart to build your film around them. But if the bulk of your film is about two characters and their interactions, at least one of them has to be likable. BotF's characters are not; worse, they're *bland*, not even interestingly unlikable.

Unfortunately, it is very hard to care what happens in BotF. Yes, something creepy is happening, but what's it matter? It's okay with me if these people die, and it's okay if they don't; they seem about as interesting as an overheard phone conversation on public transit. Maybe they're too realistic.

Sound/score are good though. And they do what they can with a clearly very limited budget, at least in terms of filming. It's just that they forgot to give us a reason to care about anybody in the film.

Into the woods
kosmasp11 December 2023
No pun intended - not sure what you might think of this. Relationship movies with horror elements ... add to that a location that is not the easiest. And then two characters whom you may not really feel close to. They have their issues, but do we care? I reckon you do not have to - just remember this is a low budget movie.

The movie has some really solid scenes - where as a viewer you are being reeled in (if you watch the whole thing open minded of course). It also has scenes that will feel like a let down for sure. The acting is ok overall, same goes for dialog. Cinematography works too throughout. I understand that technically most movies have improved anyway - still I have seen worse. It may not be able to always deliver on its premise/title but often enough - be afraid then.

Not that bad but misses cohesion
nanton-3526825 April 2024
This movie is best be described as a surrealistic thriller. It's about a couple going into the woods to spent time together. To fix their broken relationship.

Metaphorically it's about a woman struggling with patriarchal and cultural totalitarianism. But also where does this totalitarian boundaries start and end?

That is where the movie begins to fall apart. First there is no chemistry between the actors. So it becomes hard to find a red line that keeps the movie together. Why should I spent time with a low budget movie that has no reflective images and scenes of mentioned topic.

So at the end we are still where we were at the start. Still being followed by one of the most cultural way of oppression. But the woman has not evolved.

Watch Don't worry darling from Olivia Wilde. Ten times better movie where the woman breaks free and becomes a sovereign being.

This movie is terrible

Warning: Spoilers
It is a convoluted mess. There is no real plot, I believe they were trying for symbolism, but don't quite understand symbolism.

Spoiler alert- A man forgives his girlfriend for cheating and takes her for a hike in the woods and proposes. She turns him down and says "we should work through our problems first". He agrees. Then the whole movies is trees making creaky noises, while they show, I guess what are suppose to be scary, twigs and branches, and the occasional monster growling while a couple stumbles through a forest that they can't get out of.

Then a bunch of magic, like people appearing then disappearing. No explanation for why this is happening. The boyfriend disappears. Then she finds his engagement ring and puts it on, and is found and goes home! Then she takes it off and oh no! She's in the magic forest with scary twigs and branches again!

We're then again focused on the women trying to find her boyfriend or get out, with the scary twigs and branches. Then she finds him! For no explainable reason, he attacks her, trying to force the ring on her finger, which for some reason she doesn't want now. She then brutally kills him. The women then gets out of the magic woods with scary branches and goes home. Oh, but wait, creaky tree noise, maybe she"s not!

I've just given you the whole plot.

A ridiculous waste of my time. I can't think of a more poorly written movie.

Convoluted Mess
roscoe6661 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Low budget, inexplicable mess.

Two people get lost in Irish woods, the woman claims 'she deserves better when proposed to by her boyfriend, (no doubt thinking of billionaire Chad), before killing him and apparently being rescued, or is she?

Lots of random things happen, none of which make sense, then it ends.

The music is rather intrusive, without it it is just 2 people going for a walk.

Lots of random things happen, none of which make sense, then it ends.

Lots of random things happen, none of which make sense, then it ends. Is that enough characters?

The writer and director should go back to their day jobs.

bring out the branston
martinjohnston3911 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Oh dear, where to start with this one, first of all if a couple hadnt been more mismatched ever in the history of the world ,let me know. The cinematography was fine ,but if your in stunning wicklow ireland a go pro will bring that out. The main problem with this film is a plot, a short film maybe?. But an hour and half of running round the woods lost does not a filmeth make. A fail then like so many others trying to jump on the folk horror bandwagon. Roll up roll up and bring out the branson. There is one good thing to come out of films like this it shows you what to avoid in future , thank you.

Creepy Scenes, But More Explanation Needed
icocleric4 January 2024
I thought it was pretty good overall, but I think more explanation would have been a LOT better. The acting was okay, and I thought the setting looked really great, with some nice CREEPY, and tense scenes. I love supernatural horror, and the old myths.

Like I think a changeling was trying to leave the woods with Rosie? But I got that from Irish woods, and knowing some myths changelings can be made from wood.

Like even if the characters argued about the idea, and that being ridiculous. Would have filled us in a little bit more about what is happening.

I get that some scenes are to make us question what is really real, and what is not. But I feel there could have been a better balance.

Bring in the fear.
DoorsofDylan3 October 2022
Making a note of the title after reading praise for it in Kim Newman's review, I was pleased to recently have the chance to take the fear out.

Note:Review contains some plot details.

View on the film:

Unable to see the woods for the trees as they try to break out of the time-loop path, Ciara Bailey and Tad Morari give excellent performances as Rosie and Dan, thanks to each of them delivering the dialogue in a jagged, abrupt manner which emphasis the disintegration of their romantic relationships, that comes under increased pressure from the supernatural chills being threaded into their lives.

Matching the snapping of twigs in the woods with the snapping of Dan and Rosie's relationship, the screenplay by editor/ writer/director Richard Waters wonderfully takes a slow-burn stance to the supernatural Horror encircling the couple, via subtle, little differences the duo initially dismiss as they walk in a loop desperate to find a exit, until it becomes far too late to turn back, and the horror permanently splinters their relationship.

Going to the woods with just a handful of characters, director Waters & cinematographer Rowan Moore encounter a excellent eerie atmosphere, via low-hanging, rolling thunder ground level panning shots, spinning on the simmering paranoia of Rosie and Dan,which shatters to stark, jittering extreme close-ups,as the fear comes out.
