Fine enough for what it's trying to be
kannibalcorpsegrinder17 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Following a series of strange encounters, a brother and sister find their troubled lives growing up have come back to haunt them as adults when the stalker confronting them is revealed to be the cause of the chaos in their lives all along and must find a way to stop it from spelling their downfall.

This was a troubling if still enjoyable enough genre effort. One of the major likable factors here comes from the strong characterization that takes place between the two here. We spend a vast majority of the film with the two of them on-screen either detailing how their lives have been affected to the point it is at as where this finds them at the start is quite enjoyable. Seeing their relationship at this point in their lives is a bit of a sympathizing factor as their desire to remain a stabilizing force for each other in the wake of their history growing up makes for a strong drama-heavy feel that makes the later attacks by the creature feel all the more impactful with the struggles that take place to undermine his sanity. However, that doesn't always make for an interesting time as the majority of the film, focusing on these interactions between the two, leaves this feeling incredibly bland at times. Featuring more close-quarters conversations and quiet, reflective moments between them than anything else that really feels quite low-key than anything else despite several genuinely creepy encounters with the stalker following them, there's not much to go on here beyond the more prominent aspects here integrating a storyline about trauma and personal growth. That's not a bad thing in the slightest, but it's also not something everyone will be intrigued by and looking for in their films.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language and Violence.

To fight a demon you have to...............
jclenz4 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Sister and brother are attacked by a demon. When the sister dies, the brother wants revenge. That's the whole plot.

The dirctor makes the best of the obvious low budget. Many strange things are happening and many scenes take place during the night. The movie has a very sinister, dark atmosphere that gets you at your throat.

If you want to feel uncomfortable, then watch this movie. Do not expect too much, because there are final revelations and explanations.

This one is really for fans of the horror genre, that do not want to miss out on any horror movie.

There is nothing more to write about When I consume you, check it out for yourself.

A few things that kept it from 8 stars...

Warning: Spoilers
They did a really good job at building identity on the characters. Add to that the fact that the siblings acted the part well enough to have you feel their struggle. However, killing daphne off in the first 20 minutes was pretty premature. The fact that we don't exactly know how or why she died also didn't sit right with me. I usually love horror dramas because of the fact that they do so well with building the characters and making you feel every ounce of their emotion. This just didn't deliver... it burned really slow... the backwood of horror drama genre if you will. I just don't know where they were trying to go. Yellow veil hasn't ever given me anything to make me write home about so the most exciting part of the movie for me was finding out what production company was used. I was expecting A24 or even Blunhouse. When I saw yellow veil I thought to myself "well in that case how good could it be" I will say it delivered what I expected which wasn't much. This was a production company failure because the actors delivered.

It doesn't get better
janiaston23 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Wasted an evening on this as kept thinking it would get better. It doesn't. Just drivel, Predictable drivel at that from the start and yes she did just kill herself. Demons, historic demons, family trauma, poor childhood etc. Etc. When you start watching you think definitely think this is to do with own, self past demons.... it is. Make of it what you want in respect of what happened to the main characters in their childhood but dear God boring seeing what effect it actually had. Just does not get better don't let it think it does ans don't believe the ratings that tell you it does. Boring predictable nonsense.

6.9/10. Recommended

1) This is a good movie. Underrated. 4,8/10 is not a fair rating. It's not VERY good, it has its flaws but if you wanna watch a good psychological-drama, indie/art horror, this is your movie. It's intense and scary, there are some jump scares that make my heart beat faster. There is not much gore, not massacres, not masked face killers. It's not mindless fun. It creates an excellent atmosphere. Slow to unfold, at first you may think it's not interesting. But patience is rewarded here, there is a fine escalation and it's getting dreader by the minute.

2) Ending was satisfying, i like this particular choice made by the writer. There is no ambiguity here, what happened is crystal clear but still, it was not a good ending. The things that happened are contradictories with the movie's "lore". I mean, the ending is not consistent with the rest of the movie. Satisfying ending for sure, but i would rate it higher with a different and better one.

3) The two leading actors were great. MacLeod Andrews was not convincing though. He is a good actor, his previous movie A GHOST AWAITS is literally my favorite movie of the last 4-5 years, a masterpiece. But he is not as intimidating as it was required to be.

4) Overall, you will enjoy this movie if you find it interesting as it was described. Better to not read anything about it. There are some interesting twists and turns, far from mindblowing though. It's better than director's previous movie THEY LOOK LIKE PEOPLE. Nice to see his improvement.

Oh no! Another Promising Movie beginning...
catfanatic88825 August 2022
It just never rose to the level of horror or thriller. Both leads were terrific equally excellent but it was SO SLOW and confusing frequently. It could have been so much better if it weren't so dull throughout. I ended up very frustrated and disappointed with the lost time of my own life watching it.

Is Horror Becoming a New Art Form?
dianesedmak22 August 2022
I'm amazed by the gorgeous quality of a few recent horror movies, this one included. The horror genre used to be the number one place to find hackneyed themes and chiched tricks.

With movies like this one, however, the genre has matured to a point of refinement and even beauty without sacrificing any of the scares and thrills one would expect.

We can now look to horror movies that are of this level of accomplishment to provide competition for any serious film or film-maker.

Niche Horror

Warning: Spoilers
My actual rating is actually 6/10 but i boosted it by +1 star to increase its unfair 4.8/10 ratings.

Anyway, When I Consume You, is pretty much what you would expect from an indie-horror. It's nice, slow-burner, minimal casts, which for what it is, highly effective.

The pros, it's very well acted, all the main casts acted beautifully. The visuals are great, at times a bit old school, but it effectively build up the atmosphere. And also, I really liked the prologue.

The cons, the long, over extended red herring is not worth the twits ,and what i mean by this is :

SPOILERS WARNING The brother had a physical training for (almost literally) half the film, just for it to be that the bad guy is a demon. They could've explore the demonic rituals thingy more, which i think is more interesting, especially it's a horror film.

I don't know who comes up with the title, but 'When I Consume You' is such a weird title. And MacLeod characters kinda remind me of Constantine.

6/10 Won't recommended it to my friends, but it's good watch nevertheless.

I was gripped

Warning: Spoilers
From start to finish with this film at the Jim Thorpe Film Fest. It instantly became one of my favorites of all time, and I look forward to watching it again when it comes to streaming.

I loved the initial pull, the sustain, and the heart wrenching ending. I was also shocked to learn that the writer/director did most or all of the shooting as well. It looked great for such a low budget, but I honestly wasn't even looking too hard at the visuals because the acting and story brought me in so far. Those actors really gave it their all!

The filmmaker was also a class act and talked with fans after the screening. Great stuff.
