The Big Fat Quiz of the Year 2019

If you are a fan of pub quizzes, and have a good knowledge of the news events in the world, entertainment, TV, film, music, sport, technology and science, politics and much more in the year gone by, then this is a great show to watch and have fun with. Hosted by Jimmy Carr, with celebrity panellists in three teams: Dara O'Briain and Maya Jama (Mayajamadararama), Roisin Conaty and Asim Chaudhry (Quiz Hurley & Huge Grant), and Richard Ayoade and Noel Fielding (Diminishing Returns). This quiz focused on the year 2019, with all sorts of questions to answer about the past twelve months. These questions are asked as they are, with video and sound clips, with pictures (including Say What You See), and by celebrity and mystery guests on screen or in the studio, so it really does feel like a proper quiz that you can take part in. Events in the year 2019 that were questioned and joked about, and mentioned (or pictured) included: Theresa May tearfully resigning as Prime Minister, Greta Thunberg, Rebecca Vardy, Killing Eve, the deaths of Doris Day and Grumpy Cat, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle having a baby, FaceApp, the election, Prince Andrew stepping down from royal duties, the Notre-Dame de Paris fire, Donald Trump serving the Clemson University football team loads of fast food (including 300 McDonald's burgers, 300 Burger King burgers and 300 Wendy's burgers), the "unlawful" suspension of parliament and Boris Johnson's comments about Brexit, the Prince Andrew interview regarding his friend and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein where he claimed to have gone to Pizza Express and that he cannot sweat, Extinction Rebellion, the success of Lewis Capaldi, Kylie Minogue becoming the most watched Glastonbury performance (3.2 million watching), the Jonas Brothers reuniting, the Spice Girls reunion tour, Kanye West suggesting he would legally change his name to "Christian Genius Billionaire", "Juice" by Lizzo, Cardi B trying to trademark the catchphrase "okurrr" (saying OK with surprise or sass), "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran upsetting his neighbours by building a swimming pool and claimed it was a "wildlife pond", The Jeremy Kyle Show axed (due to a participant committing suicide), Facebook and Instagram coming to a fourteen hour standstill due to a power outage in March, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos settled $38 billion divorce, YouTube stars KSI and Logan Paul taking part in a boxing match, Jennifer Aniston joining Instagram and breaking the internet for her selfie with her fellow Friends cast member (she got 8 million Likes in less than 24 hours, a set a Guinness World Record for the fastest Instagram account to reach one million followers - in five hours), Elon Musk revealing the Tesla Cybertruck but at the launch the armour glass windows broke when a ball was thrown at them, a picture of an egg Instagram made headlines around the world becoming the most liked picture on Instagram with 15 million Likes, the online Bottle Cap challenge, the statue named "Emma" (with a hunchback, red eyes, protruding stomach and varicose veins) built to warn the public of what deskbound workers will look in 20 years time, The Crown, Line of Duty, This Time with Alan Partridge, Strictly Come Dancing, Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, Black Mirror, The Great British Bake Off, Good Omens, Fleabag, Gentleman Jack, Chernobyl, The End of the F***ing World, Derry Girls, Les Miserables, Years and Years, the final season of Game of Thrones including the fans spotting a coffee cup gaffe, Olivia Colman winning the Oscar for Best Actress for The Favourite and blowing a raspberry to producers telling her to wrap up her acceptance speech, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, steps in the Bronx becoming a tourist attraction because it featured in Joker, Ru Paul's Drag Race UK and its drag slang terms ("gag" - amazed or shocked, "spilling the tea" - giving gossiping and "fishy" - looking like a woman), Liverpool beating Tottenham in the Champions League Final, Anthony Joshua reclaiming his title, the Cricket World Cup, the Women's World Cup and American player Alex Morgan celebrating her goal by miming drinking tea to mock the England team; eleven-year-old Alex Fowler running into a lamppost and breaking his nose, but getting a photo with his hero Mo Salah, Adidas shoes modelled by Alan Titchmarsh, Andy Murray having hip surgery, Thomas Cook going bust, John Bercow standing down as Commons Speaker, Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg's book receiving terrible reviews and poo sales, David Cameron calling Boris Johnson a "greased piglet", Pope Francis getting stuck in a lift, Fyre Festival event producer Andy King going viral for saying he would "suck dick" for Evian water, the President of Brazil suggesting to save the planet we should eat less and poop every other day, Kim Khardashian studying to become a lawyer (like her father, who defended OJ Simpson, Colleen Nolan posting photos on Instagram on a private page that appeared in newspapers and she deduced it was Rebekah Vardy, Colleen was nicknamed "Wagatha Christie", Diane Abbott caught on the overground drinking a canned mojito cocktail (drinking alcohol on trains is illegal), Rocketman, Cats, Downton Abbey (the film), McDonald's forced to apologise for chicken found in their vegetarian wraps, Emma Watson announcing she was "self-partnering", the Greggs vegan sausage roll, the Royal Air Force allowing beards, 20,000 Britons labelled "slashies" (having multiple jobs), a solid gold toilet worth £4.8 million stolen from Blenheim Palace, "ugly" denim panties called Janties, Avengers: Endgame being the highest-grossing film of the year (and of all time), the Rugby World Cup being the most watched sporting event of the year, and "Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi being the biggest selling song of the year. Other celebrity and special mystery guests in the show included the children of Mitchell Brook Primary School in Neasden who act out well known news stories, Jon Snow who reads news related to lyrics from songs of the year and dances to it, Charles Dance who reads passages from a celebrity autobiography of the year (Dani Dyer), actress Naomi Ackie (star of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), World champion sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, Mike Bushell, Luke Evans, Luke Goss (one-half of Bros), Adam Lambert, Ru Paul's Drag Race UK contestants Baga Chipz and The Vivienne, and the mystery guest 15-year-old Jaden Ashman who won $1.125 million coming second in the Fortnite (video game) World Cup (he bought his mother a house). The jokes and the questions are what make this show so much fun, they always choose the right celebrity panellists, and it works as a funny way to reminisce on the recent events you remember, a great comedy quiz show. Very good!
