so contradictory anime, No character development
erisgin26 August 2023
This anime havent been character improve. If you watched anime, main man character contradicts himself in the anime and that stuation so bad for Audience. A few woman character Consistent have it. But other woman characters Fillid the screen and get wasted time. This anime havent another man character. And very different from what he does and what he says,I talking about men character. The male character is so bad that there is no time to criticize anything else. Everything is so contradictory. I think this anime so cringe. I understant someone why watch this anime. But I have to say, this anime Bad even for mid-level. It has some gritty scenes but that's it. No further than that.

Interesting Concept
robinsonaustin-0749014 August 2020
This one, oh boy. It is about Kazuya Kinoshita who is about to enter college only to discover that his girlfriend Mami dumped him after dating him for about a month. Distraught over that, he discovers a rather shady app where he can rent a girlfriend. So, he ends up meeting the seemingly perfect Chizuru Mizuhara. After their first date, Kazuya, despite knowing that this was a job, grows suspicious of Chizuru and gives her a low rating. Which makes her angry.

To make matters worse, Kazuya's grandmother collapses and she has the misfortune of meeting Chizuru, so they have to keep up the facade a little longer.

Characters. Kazuya himself isn't really likable. He's a pushover who everyone throws shade at. Everyone, including his own family. He can't stand up for himself; he's pretty much a loser. I get him wanting to have a real relationship, but as Chizuru pointed out to him, what she did was her job. That outburst in episode 1 was really unnecessary. He's borderline insufferable as a leading character. But a lot of that is intentional, so I can't really completely blame him for that.

The other characters are hard to really "like." Chizuru herself at the least is shown to at least see that while Kazuya can be foolish and an idiot at times, there are at least some good qualities about him. It is also good on her part that, while she is overly critical with Kazuya being the doormat he is, she does assist him with upcoming the visage of a relationship. She even stands up for him when Mami was talking smack about Kazuya. Which perfectly segues to...

Mami. Oy vey, Mami. What can I say about her? Out of all the shows I am watching this year, she is hands down the worst character in the show. On the outside, she looks bubbly and friendly almost like an angel. But on the inside, she is an utterly petty borderline sociopath.

For starters, she finds herself insanely jealous of Kazuya and Chizuru's "relationship" despite the fact that she herself dumped him in the first place under the claim that she met someone else she loved. It's her actions that led to him finding the rental app and yet she wants to destroy the (fake, but she doesn't know) relationship between the two because she cannot stand that Kazuya appeared to move on after her. She is a manipulative, verbally abusive young lady who tears Kazuya down with her words. While the show treats him as a punching bag, nothing about what she says is funny as not even the other characters humor her for it. Worse, she even forces Kazuya to apologize for her when she gets called out for her actions.

The worst part of her plot had to be when she was trying to tempt Kazuya when Chizuru was in a position where she likely would have died had it not have been for Kazuya's quick intervention. This just goes to show how much of a ruthless sociopath she is where she does not give a crap about whether someone lost their life because of her. Unlike with Chizuru where she has her own softer side, Mami doesn't have anything remotely redeeming about her. It's really because of her presence that the show feels especially cruel and I'd think that it would be better if she was written out. Maybe die in a car accident or some freakish scenario. She is trash plain and simple.

The friends of Kazuya are mostly one-note except for his childhood friend who does acknowledge that there are some good parts to Kazuya's behavior such as his determination. Kazuya's family...don't like them. His grandmother to me comes off as especially bad partially because of her trying to dip her hand between Kazuya and Chizuru. She has that snooty attitude as well which also makes her hateable in my eyes. Otherwise, characters are hit or miss.

Voice work is also fine as is the animation. It isn't amazing by any means, but it services the show well. Comedy is hit or miss because it revolves around the misgivings of the MC and if you don't care for that kind of humor, it can come off as painful.

Really great, but underlyingly sad.
alexmccaskill-5369017 July 2020
I think the anime itself is awesome, but the fact that Japan actually has these is very sad. Japan isn't exactly the best place in the world, along with the birth rates it just makes me kinda sad.

What it is and what it lacks
togobodhisattva25 November 2020
Rent-a-girlfriend is a really honest anime. It is cute, relatable, and engaging. I did not mind it but honestly it struck me as a little frivolous. I have seen many reviews saying it is not for you if you like serious storylines. However, there are some moments of sincerity that even a comic story needs which only makes it human. So many moments for me were destroyed simply because the backing track changed into something comical and the expressions too. As light-hearted as it is supposed to be, a little realism here and there would've only made it better.

awesome, but one little thing bothers me a lot
brunexgameiro12 October 2020
The anime itself is really good, i love the characters and the story, but one minor thing that is really enoying is the superman-like glasses/no glasses thing. like, how they dont recognise her? but, any way, its such a little detail in an awesome anime that it doesnt really matters.

Not What I Expected
Littleman9526 January 2021
Plot: this is where this anime lacks. This season seamed a sort of an introduction that leads the characters to find their feelings. The point around witch this story spins is very weak.

Animation: The best part along the drawings. Very well done and smooth. A lot of compliments!

Drawings: The best part along the animation! They are very well done, defined and easy to follow. Moreover the choice of the colour is stunning (or at least I found it very amusing). Tons of compliments!

Conclusions: the technical side of this anime is literally high level but it really lacks in the plot with a lot of back and forth and some absurd or nonsense scenes. Chizuru is the only grown up here. I expected more moral stuff about using girls as rental or something like that, but at the and girls are quite depicted as objects.

I haven't really read the manga but anime is awsome! Very funny and really unique! Keep you gripped in its pace and many scenes can be really relatable! Must watch! For me it's age rating should be 16+.

The definition of mediocre even in the manga
ACollegeStudent13 June 2021
Rating: 2.5

All the the girls are cookie cutter dere types with the exception of Chizuru. Sumi is a dandere, Ruka yandere, Mami is just bad for the sake of being bad (nobody knows why she acts likes a sociopath). This wouldn't be an issue if there dere types weren't their largest character trait. The MC even in the manga is extremely pathetic. His baseline was so low that his character dev in the manga was just him going from from a pathetic pervert, to a normal simp. The show's artstyle is clean and the plot is decent (update not decent it's repetitive 80% of the plot his Kazuya fawning over the girls), but I can't give this a pass because the girls are cute. It's mediocre .

Great female leads, terrible male lead and the failure to communicate
Rakshun26 March 2023
I cannot be indifferent about this one because it wasn't the usual romcom anime I was expecting at first. One reason I generally like anime as a medium is that it can always surprise me. Just the sheer amount pumped out every year makes it certain there is an evolution going on and when you think you have seen everything then comes something new suddenly. (I skipped like 15 years so the contrast is shocking me.)

First of all, Rent A Girlfriend is not a romcom. It's a drama. It does start as a comedy but it turns into a sad social caricature pretty soon. You know that overused and luckily, now overprogressed exposition when the loser guy accidentally gets the best girl fall for him or many of them for the matter. Well, this show looks at that topic and just laughs at it and says, no. Chizuru - as a cold headed professional as she is, going out with guys for money -, would tell you with a straight face, not at all, what were you thinking? Maybe, just maybe, you can enjoy her company for a short period, if you pay enough. Is it cruel? On one hand, it's just an escort business, where the girls are called 'talents', on the other hand, I really felt sad for the poor losers to the point where I felt uncomfortable. Even though, it is fantasy, this approach definitely was the selling point for me, I was bought for the rest of the show.

About the rest of the show, there were some great moments and some annoying moments. The script is well done and was given some thoughts for sure. There are some missteps, like how easily the girls can be found on the Rent A Girlfriend site by anyone by their names. Some scenes - unfortunatelly a complete episode -, were pretty disturbing which is not an issue in itself, but those were unnecessary too. Kazuya, the male lead, is portrayed as simply just too stupid and childish, a bit annoying to be honest, but not unrealistic outright.

On the other hand, besides the situation and the script, I really liked Kazuya's relationship with his friends and how they supported each other; they had some strong moments. Some criticize it, but I also think, Mami's character (Kazuya's ex, dumping him in the very beginning) and role were realistic and important, especially in the last episode of Season 1. Her standpoint is completely valid. Other than that, there is not too much fan service, filler episodes, school scenes, cooking/walking/slacking in general. I dare to go as far as to say that with small modifications this could easily be a western script. As I have heard a live adaptation is also coming, which I see totally feasible. (There are some filler episodes, indeed, like the one with the Sumi girl, I don't know, maybe it will be important in Season 2 or Season 3 coming in July 2023.)

UPDATE: After watching through Season 2 I've came back and lowered my 9 to 7. After a promising start it actually turned into a romcom and a bit annoying one. Particularly it's Kazuya, the male lead, who is annoying to the point it's getting all the female leads into humiliating situations constantly. All conflicts are built on his inability to decide and communicate his intentions straight. This show's strongest point is definitely the ladies. All four of them are likeable, cute, sexy, sensible and well presented, in itself makes the show worth watching; that's the selling point and the script only exists to support that... I really hope there will be a positive spin in Season 3 because it's just getting boring. (Or negative spin for the matter, because it's just stuck. Hachiman or even Yukinoshita would just kill this guy in cold blood...)

What people are giving this a 10 lol
sugarcane-1769122 December 2021
Kazuya is THE WORST. If the characters were in junior high THEN this would make more sense lol. The characters are in their 20's and act like immature kids when it comes to romance, and it get VERY annoying. Like Kazuya rents a girlfriend Chizuru, and then can't distinguish whether she is his actual girlfriend or not, even when he's paying her? Like come out of it. He's in university, he should know what's what. He has moments of clarity where I'm like "ok good, he knows what's going on" then a minute later something VERY subtle happens and he's back in his dillusion again, really makes him off putting and not want to root for him at all lol. If they didn't have him as such a dork with no common sense and more of sensible guy that gets put into the same scenarios with Chizuru but genuinely knows the situation but later on falls in love, it would have been a lot better than putting up with his antics. I gave this a 5/10 only because of Kazuya, as the anime itself was good as I've seen much worse but like 2 little tweeks and a personality change and this would be in the same league as Horimiya.

This comic is underratedddddddddddd........
sujaljena8 October 2022
Many people says that this manga is a trash but in my point of view its very beautiful story at first I also think how can this type of male character can attract so many good looking cuties but when I go deep into the story I get to know that this boy may not have good Iq, attractive look but he does have a good heart which make him stand out of the crowd but can't ignore the fact that he is also a big pervert....... But I also want to answer the question that many people are asking that why a woman like chizuru mizuhara will fall into his love??

Its because of his caring and kindness nature and he also not cheated his feelings by making out with ruka( when she also tried to seduce him)but he do control his feelings and help chizuru with everything he got and became her wall when she is alone and facing hardships by making her dream possible even if he don't know about a single thing about film but he do help her..... I don't know what a girl I don't know what a girl will expect rather than this from her partner....he also give her confidence to not to give up her dreams and hold her hand to carry forward and never let her down.......🙂🙂 My feelings:And the character mizuhara at first I saw what a beautiful woman her beauty is out of this world but when I come to know about this character fell in love with this woman but then I realised she is a cartoon but also it just her hardwork and being so passionate about her aim which make me fell for it I have never seen a beauty with such a brain (she is so matured and at same time so humble and kind) during struggling also she help kazuya to get her a gf but I do admire her the most...😊😊😊😊 Thank you to the man who gave us such a beautiful story with such a great sketches..... And at last I want to add that her dedication made her look even more beautiful......

Ok anime
TheSquareTiger29 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ok I have to say that this anime and manga both are not as good as those rating it 10 out of 10 are, you get good scenes with Sumi in but the story is ridiculous, up to 200 or so chapters and still Kazuya the protagonist hasn't asked Mizuhara out, Yaemori and Sumi as well as Mizuhara are the ones I love the most and Ruka and Mami aren't lovable, Ruka is annoying and Mami, well she's just worse than annoying, basically story starts off with the main protagonist (Kazuya) getting dumped one day then he ends up finding a girl on a rental girlfriend website and goes on a date with and from then up to now, Mami has been with them and still seems to have feelings for Kazuya yet refuses to tell him what she feels or how she feels, Kazuya is also a coward for not actually confessing other than the one time in the Hawaiian Park arc and also the anime openings shouldn't even show Kazuya and Mizuhara together or holding hands if they haven't even done that, in the openings, and I know it's just the openings and not actually the story but you see Kazuya and Mizuhara walking away on opposite sides or kazuya running towards her but both is Kazuya running towards her and Mizuhara turning around but if Kazuya had the guts to just go out with her for real and not lie and not drag this out any longer, then I would be happy but right now it's just extras getting added into the manga and it's not even interesting anymore, it's just a ridiculous long story that nothing happens. Even The Quintessential Quintuplets can do better than this or Kaguya Sama and both are romcoms but this is probs the most ridiculous and uninteresting one I've seen and read.

Second season was the same and third season nothing really improved other than getting to see Sumi again and a new character which was Yaemori, she was hilarious but the author of this manga/anime series is adding way too many things to try to keep the series going, it started off really interesting in the first season and thought the second season would be improved but I guess it never did and I only watched it to see Chizuru and Sumi in here haha. I wonder when Sumi will get her own anime too.

Third season was the same as the other two seasons with nothing much but we did finally get to see the new neighbour which was Yaemori and how cute she is, kind of like Sumi but more active and some things she says are hilarious, the other side was still the fact that nothing between Chizuru and Kazuya has happened, and kind of looking forward to when Kazuya, Chizuru and Yaemori actually move in together.

It may be a work that is rarely seen by men and women.
sdjmsfd22 January 2024
As the title suggests, this is an episode about borrowing money from your girlfriend. In Japanese culture, there is a word called "papa katsu". Instead of paying money, you go on a date with a man or woman worth the money. Of course, the more money you pay, the more sex you can have. First of all, this story is about a man with a strong sexual desire who wants to have a girlfriend. But does the woman keep approaching the main character? When it comes to a man's charm, it's just ordinary. Ordinary isn't the problem. A character who likes you when you save him, or a character who likes you even though there is no reason, or a character who gets jealous after you break up... It gets worse as the story goes on. So when we look at this work, we only feel jealous. But the production company continues to release series. That was also our goal from the beginning, using a famous voice actor.

SO IMPACTFUL ON MY MIND
rucharruchar21 March 2022
I watched this anime two days ago, but still i cannot move on from this anime. My mind is only thinking about this and i don't know why but i cannot focus on another things. Let's start the review -

Positive :-

First, unlike other anime, this anime focus on building RELATIONSHIPS bit by bit, which i liked it.

Second, renting a girlfriend is a UNIQUE CONCEPT to me.

Third, due its unique concept, it is so INTERESTING and ATTRACTIVE.

Fourth, some RELATABLE PROBLEMS are shown like masturbation, overthinking, imagination etc.

Fifth, the pressure of the PROBLEMS on the main character is plotted well. We can feel that.

Sixth, i cannot focus on other aspects of the anime, i just LOST in the story ignoring logic, characters development, story etc.

Seventh, this anime is small and suitable for BINGE WATCHING.

Eighth, the CHARACTER DESIGNS are so good especially the girls. I love chizuru 😍.

Negatives :-

First, you feel the story CRINGY so many times.

Second, there are use of some HARD WORDS which are not understandable.

Third, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT is so weak and bad.

Fourth, this is advise from me that don't get inspiration from it, this anime is FULL IMAGINARY.

Fifth, story is so COMMON & PREDICTABLE.

Sixth, this anime shows the perspective of BOYS only.

Seventh, sometimes some scenes signifies the women as OBJECT.

Eighth, as i said earlier, it has lots of DISTRACTION, i can't focus on a single thing either.

Thanks 😊

Adorable but ridiculous anime
Mysterygeneration13 January 2024
While everyone else is over here demonizing this show for showing a protagonist who is hopelessly perverse and a morally dubious topic, I'm just over here loving every minute of this adorable but ridiculous anime.

Rent-A-Girlfriend is a popular Romcom anime that revolves around rentable girlfriends, who can be instant friends for a day. The protagonist, Kazuya, finds himself in a situation after being dumped by his first girlfriend. He and his rental girlfriend Chizuru fall in love, but they get caught up in an awkward misunderstanding that leads to them faking a real relationship and lying to their friends and family. The anime is criticized for following similar structures and plot progressions, but Rent-A-Girlfriend stands out with its unique "quirky" gimmick. The protagonist Kazuya and Chizuru fall in love, but their relationship is a misunderstanding, leading to a misunderstanding and a lie from their friends and family.

Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the story is really simple aside from the gimmick. The show plays out very much how you would expect. There are awkward and humorous moments shared by Chizuru and Kazuya. Other girls enter the scene to provide some comedy and drama, including Ruka, the short-haired girl who is incredibly dedicated and Mami, the home-wrecker disguised as a lady. Additionally, there's this girl named Sumi who appears in the second-to-last episode. I felt that the directors made a strange choice to incorporate her at such a late point. It was interesting to see Kazuya's two pals and grandmother unexpectedly involved in the story.

The fact that Rent-A-Girlfriend made me cringe so many times is certainly its most unusual feature. It came to the point where I had to remind myself that it's just fiction and that I didn't have to feel this way multiple times when I actually had to halt the show. You know what's hilarious, though? Actually, I thought this strategy was good. It added a little more flavor to the show and was obviously intended on the part of the author. That has to be a plus, right? I mean, I cared enough to actively cringe and experience moderate discomfort anytime Kazuya did something dumb, which was probably every episode.

Kazuya is one of the worst MC's

Warning: Spoilers
I would have given this anime a 10/10 if not for the MC

Never in my life have I seen a character this horrible, annoying and stupid

He wasted half of his money on a girl who doesn't love him and kept shunning the only girl to ever show feelings for him

Yeah... That idiot deserves to be single for life

Not bad!
amooorales5 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It starts to drag a little bit during the middle episodes, which made it hard to watch. The MC also made it hard to watch but then I realized I can't blame him, we are all addicted to something and he got addicted to rent girlfriends to heal the pain after he got dumped by his real girlfriend. The only problem I really had was about Mami-Chan. I don't understand her whole deal, she is really is the villain of this anime, because she dumps kazuya in the beginning of the anime but proceeds to chase him after she sees him with his rent girlfriend. Which is how it exactly is in real life. A girl will want you after you get into a relationship, she wants what she can't have. This anime is more relatable than I thought it would, which is why I have it a 7. Wish we saw more of sumi-Chan so hopefully season 2 comes out fast!

Started good but ultimately disappointing.
Xyler85227 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Starts at an 7, ends at a 3.

A college student named Kazuya, who is dumped by his girlfriend of one month, decides to use a rent a girlfriend service. His date is a very attractive college student named Chizuru. Kazuya falls in love with her and circumstances keep them getting back together as customer and client. What led me to stop watching is that the Kazuya doesn't grow. He remains the unlikable wishy washy character throughout the series. There are several episodes where he has excellent opportunities to tell Chizuru his feelings but never does. It became very frustrating and irritating to watch him do nothing. Get on with it already! So I gave up and don't care what happens.

GOAT!!! ABSOLUTE PEAK FICTION!!!
thug_life_47x15 April 2022
Oh boy, here's my first review on an anime... I'm absolutely gonna get roasted by this review. Don't expect a lot on this okay...

I am into comedy and romance/harem anime, since I want to find out who really is the perfect girl. I found Rent-a-Girlfriend in some videos on YouTube and it looks really amazing so there no doubt that Rent-a-Girlfriend would be pretty good, just by judging it by its artstyle.

Rent-A-Girlfriend is no doubt one of, actually if not, the best anime I've seen so far. I'm sorry Assassination Classroom and Saiki K, you were fantastic, but I just absolutely love Rent-a-Girlfriend so much I wished all of these characters were real so that I can embrace them

Story - 7/10

I like the story of how this renting a girlfriend became a part of Kazuya's life after getting dumped by Mami.

Here's what I think is the real purpose of renting a girlfriend, it's to let people who got dumped or to let virgins (like me, wooo virginity rocks) learn about what's in a relationship and how to deepen the bond that would be useful for your future relationship. In the words of Ruka, they're basically a trial girlfriend, which you can practice on whenever you finally got the chance to have a girlfriend. (To virgins out there: I'm giving you hope. Don't give up easily just because you can't find the one.) It's a really cool concept but it's a common thing in Japan where you can rent people like you can rent a mom or a friend like that.

Art - 10/10

Although the animation is decent and is acceptable for me to enjoy, the art style is just phenomenal. I just love the art style like this art style was really meant to give the characters an absolutely spectacular look on them and this is the reason why I was really desperate to watch Rent-a-Girlfriend since February (and at that time, I haven't searched any good anime websites and only knew of Netflix.) It's by far the best art style I've seen, absoltely smashing my former favorite art style, the JoJo Part 4 artstyle.

Characters - 7/10

Kazuya: He's pretty scummy not gonna lie. He also has frequent sexual fantasies whenever he thinks about a person like Mami or Chizuru that I am enjoying as well (god I'm so degenerate). He's hated, which I get why, since that episode where he stalked Chizuru which made me dislike him. He doesn't deserve a LOT of hate to be honest. He has his good side as well you know? Don't be pessimistic about this dude. Imo kazuya is a simp, but the most realistic and relatable simp you'll ever find.

Chizuru: THE PERFECT GIRL, so far. She's easily best girl (sorry Ruka and Sumi) but the problem is that she still tries to be nice to Kazuya after all of that horrible things Kazuya has done (like stalking)

Ruka: A really close competitor to Chizuru for best girl. She's obsessed to Kazuya just because her BPM reached above 90. That's the only thing I hate about her. Other than that, she's a total bombshell ngl.

Sumi: An underrated cutiepie. I don't hear a lot of people saying Sumi is best girl. She's extremely shy, and doesn't really talk a lot due to the fact she's shy. I like her.

Mami: Kazuya's ex. She wants to ruin Kazuya's "relationship". She's just a total idiot that I can't even stand at all. She's the antagonist so far anyway.

Location: Dumpster Fire

Sound: 9/10 I love the opening and the EDs, especially First Drop. Sound effects are really good and all, and I like it, there's really not much to say tbh.

Enjoyment: 18/10 I am absolutely having a blast watching Rent-a-Girlfriend. There are times that were cringe, but I didn't feel the cringe at all. It's like this is my guilty pleasure enjoying and laughing at those sex jokes Kibe and Kuri makes and sexual fantasies that Kazuya imagines. All in all, I love it, absolutely enjoyable.

Overall: 10/10 The enjoyment is just out of the charts and that this is so worth watching it. You might enjoy the little horniness that Kazuya and his friends produce, but all in all, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Can't wait for S2.
