Why the actor is believeable as Jesus
j_ashby-5508420 August 2020
In the live stream after the episode where Jonathan Roumie is interviewed he tells of his experience in preparing and playing the role of Jesus. Jonathan testifies to the affect Jesus had on him as he got into character. Jonathan could not get into Jesus without wanting to receive him (Jesus) and it refined his faith. My prayer is that this series does that for everyone that watches and the series episodes continue to show more of why Jesus came.

Each Episode is better & better!

If I could give this more stars, I would! This episode is possibly the best one, so far! Each one just keeps getting better and better.

I have been following this project since before it came out and it truly has the hand of God on it. Dallas has always allowed God to lead him on this, and that is really evident! It really does point you back to the Bible, but brings the Word to life in 3-D.

He has not forgotten the women
cmeyer3818 January 2021
So far, my favorite scene is Jesus talking to Simon's wife before he heals her mother. The writers did this so well when they had Jesus recognize the sacrifices that wives make when their husbands go out to do good work. Jesus has always been aware of the contributions of women to His work. When Jesus says that traveling with a worried Simon would be even harder to deal with, that was the sweetest touch of humor. In addition to that, I want to say that this series has really brought out to me the diversity of his disciples. I never thought about how different they were and how hard it was going to be for them to get along, especially with the hated tax collector in their midst. As Jesus said, "Get used to different."

This is well worth watching.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this and every other episode. They give me a greater understanding of Jewish culture in those times. Without fail I feel I am drawn closer to Jesus somehow every time I watch, and I have watched this season twice. Love it.

Exceptional actor

I discovered Nick on "The Chosen" TV series about the life of Christ. He delivers such depth, texture & believability to this character. His ability to balance levity with profound sincerity makes him an intriguing character to watch. I'm looking forward to seeing this character of "Zebedee" on "The Chosen" flourish with the times.

My favorite episode
Anamorisabel24 February 2021
I love this episode as once more Jesus leads the way of compassion, going beyond judgement, preconceived idea as he sees beyond the appearances straight into the heart of people. This is a beautiful episodes, full of tenderness and Grace which teaches us that at some point in our life we all need the same Grace in action if we humble ourselves and acknowledge we need help as we were never created to navigate this life alone in the first place: God used to walk with Man in the Garden of Eden so welcoming him back into our life can be only for the benefit of all whom he touches.

To say it is original is understatement

Warning: Spoilers
Dallas Jenkins has to be brilliant. I had never heard of him before this series. For a story that has been told and retold through the centuries, it captures the imagination and draws one in unlike any other versions I have ever seen because the characters are written as very modern even though they are very authentic in appearance--physically and in costume and setting.

Matthew is a bit surprising for me because he has such boyish looks! He really looks like a teen. Nicodemus is so warm and wonderful. Never has Jesus been portrayed more genuinely and human! The disciples display a very tentative attitude about "following" Jesus. They are not sure exactly what they have gotten into, but they do not lack enthusiasm.

I don't have any criticisms but I am curious that at least one of the characters is not credited, though he is in several episodes. Dominius I think is his name. I really enjoy iMdb because I can learn about the actors. It just adds a dimension to the series. So I rated the series as ten and I am sincere in that. Thank you so much Dallas Jenkins!

tears and words
Kirpianuscus1 May 2021
You know the story. Very precise. In tiny details. And the series propose it in different way, like you discover it for the first time. The beauty of episode are the tears. The tears of hidden Nicodimus. The tears of the parents of Levi. The tears of Samaritan woman. And the words. The Christ expecting at the fountain a woman out of the respect of majority. The enthusiasm of Simon and you know the truth behind The Lord words. And you feel, so precise, than the story is about yourself.

The Chosen Season 1 Review
Shmaden28 February 2021
You know, when it comes to christian movies and television, I was always skeptic of watching some of 'em because most of what I saw as christian movies or TV Series, they all had at least one thing in common... they were a simple piece of religious propaganda. So when those rare instances come when you actually find a movie or TV Show that is christian based and is not a propaganda, but rather a quality, creative and entertaining piece of cinema, you know you've find a rare gem that you won't find easily. And that brings to today's subject: The Chosen. The Chosen is quite simply one of the best if not the best christian-based movie/television entertainment in recent years if not ever. It's creative, ingeniuos, passionate, intelligently written, well casted, well crafted, well written and well produced show. This isn't only a good christian TV Show but rather a good show in general. So instead of a plot breakdown, as I usually do, I'll be going to analyze this show and mention the pros and cons I found in this season, that btw blew me away, brought me to tears at times and moved me in many ways. So, let us begin shall we!

Pro:

  • What this show does excellent and probably what it's its strongest point is the story and the dialogue. Most of the people watching this show know the Bible story all to well to that point in which the dialogue that is quoted from the Bible might sound cheesy and corny. But that doesn't happen here! The quoted script from the Bible blends so well with the screenplay of the episode that at times it feels seamless. And that is not easy to do. There are TV shows and movies inspired from an already existing source material that don't quote and blend their source material with the movie's script as good as this show does. That's why I'm giving so much praise to this show for doing that so well and so seamless.

  • The performances from all the main characters are sublime. And when you think about it some of them didn't have a career in movies or TV Shows before but their work here is nothing short of Hollywood level. I know some of the more unimportant characters or side-characters have at times weak performances due to the fact that they 1. aren't as good actors as the ones playing the main characters, and 2. don't spend so much time on set to be able to understand their character and how to play it. Nevertheless, the standout for me has to be Paras Patel as Matthew and Lara Silva as Eden who give some of the best performances I've seen from any character in any show ever! At first I was a bit worried that Matthew's character was going to appear as strange and out of place, but during this season the performance and the story of Matthew made so much sense and when you read Matthew's Gospel it truly feels like someone like Matthew in The Chosen would have written the Gospel. As for Eden, I can firmly say that she gave the best feminist performance of any show I've ever seen. And it wasn't because the show centered arround her and dumbed down the male characters in order for her to shine over them. On the contrary she outshines due to her feminity and her care and love for her family and Peter. And the scene when Peter talks to her about following Jesus and leaving her with her mum back home was devastating and mesmerising. I couldn't take my eyes of her. What a true and undisputed legend!

  • The story and the sub plots that the show presents are so important and make such an impact later on the season when the pay off comes. And I've already mentioned one in last episode's review. Every character in this show has a background and a story that eventually brings him to Jesus. Even fails like Nicodemus failing to heal Mary is what brings him on the path to meeting Jesus. And speaking of Nicodemus, his last scene this season was absolutely devastating and heart breaking. It was him doing the right thing but also not being able to defeat the curent he was in, that being the pharisees.

  • The cinematography, music and Visual Effects. All of them are competently shot and executed. Obviously this being a show shot and executed by people who are out of Hollywood teritory, one might think that it would be something amateurish. That means it won't be as professional in theory, but practically it looks just as good as other shows. The music is truly superb and fits the scenes so well. Most of the time it is instrumental with vocal humming that give the scene a more mythical feel to it. The visual effects are a wonder on themselves. And there is a behind the scenes scene about how the scenes from episode 4 with the fishing miracle was made. The VFX aren't so much used in this season, but when they are, they are used sparingly and they look absolutely gorgeous and seamless.

  • There might be more other small thigs I could praise the show for but I want to keep this review short and to the point.

Cons:

  • The biggest I found was the inaccuracy in episode 4. I know that it was used for making an impact with the fishing scene at the end of the episode, but in fact for me it was a skip over the story of Jesus' temptation. That is one of the most compelling things I could imagine about the story of Jesus being portrayed on a TV screen. Hopefully if some of the people making this show reads my review, would take that into consideration and maybe show that in the next seasons as a backstory for Jesus. It truly is in my opinion on the most interesting things about Jesus' story.

  • The other problem I had with this show was more of a theological one. Most of the miracles Jesus does in this show were portrayed a bit over-dramatized. The thing which was missing in my opinion was the faith side of the miracle. I always imagined Jesus as a man of continuous prayer and tremendous prayer. I always imagined that he prayed a lot especially when he was doing the miracles. He even spent a night praying before he chose his disciples. So that aspect is a little bit glossed over here. I'm more into not showing how a leper's wounds are healing when he is touching Jesus but rather that Jesus first heals his soul and then the guy noticed that his body was also healed. I don't know why that for me sounds more impactful than anything else. And it is truly in Jesus' character that he first came to build a spiritual kingdom and save souls, then to save bodies. Again if someone who produces the show sees this and reads this, I honestly want him to think about this and analyze what I've said here and if that is in the best interest of the show or not.

  • The last problem is only a tiny nit pick I have, and that at times some side-characters are overly acted because of the reasons mentioned above. In this episode's case it was the woman who was shouting that she met the Messiah even after she passed the disciples coming back to Jesus and she was alone on the hill running down. It just seemed awkward.

Anyway. Aside from that, this show and the story behind it are truly and deeply moving and inspiring. This is one of those shows where I was able to see how much passion the people producing it have for the source material and how well they are able to adapt it. It truly is one of the greatest cinematic portrayls of Jesus I've ever seen and I can't wait for season 2. God bless you brothers and sisters!

Touching!
mm-3915 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I Am He is touching! I remember the biblical teaching during my catechism and mass. I Am He episode enhances the teaching. Jesus and disciples head towards the Samarians and the city and meets a lady by the well. The directing, acting, and sets gives depth to the verbal teaching. The episode unravels the witnessing to the dredged Samarians were ready for the message about the Kingdom. A healing of a crippled man, many were witnessed too, and the disciples learn about themselves and draw closer to Jesus make I Am He one of my favorite episodes. I Am He is the announcing of the coming of the Christ! Touching in a biblical way. 10 stars.

I love this episode, but possible editing error?

Warning: Spoilers
CAUTION: EPISODE SPOILERS What a beautiful and powerful episode. I'm so impressed with this show. However, there was one scene that threw me off. We see a montage of the apostles all leaving their homes before they met up in the morning to head out, including Mary. Nicodemus chickens out of joining them, but leaves a bag of gold. Jesus and his followers set off and are walking towards Samaria. They stop and ask Jesus a bunch of questions and he says something along the lines of, "if we're going to keep stopping to have a question and answer, it will be an annoying trip." Then the show cuts to Mary leaving her house, as well as Thaddeus and little James. Shouldn't that have been earlier on, when they showed the other followers leaving their homes before they all met to leave town (especially because they had already shown Mary leaving).

Yusef, Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman
l-perez-dancer22 February 2024
I've been an avid Bible student since I was 21 years old. Prior to that I lived my life without caring what my Creator thought about my choices. My Bible study has only increased in the over the 40 years since I first started reading the Gospel accounts.

I know the Bible very well and am thoroughly enjoying The Chosen series. Naturally, since I am so familiar with the Bible account, I have some opinions about this series. I believe it is important to point out that less than 10% of each episode of The Chosen is actually from the Bible accounts. Ninety percent of these episodes are embellishments; the producer's ideas of how the Bible characters may have spoken, looked and acted, beyond what is written in the Bible. I have no problem with those embellishments. As a matter of fact, I appreciate and enjoy much of the non-biblical inventions by the writers of this series.

I would like to speak about the good and the not so good embellishments created by the writers of this series. I hope you will not be offended by my critique.

Episode 8 - The woman at the well. One of the many embellishments to the Biblical account is the interactions between the Jewish religious leaders. I found it interesting that the writers had Yusef, who I think will be revealed as being Joseph of Arimathea, chastizing Jesus during the dinner at Matthew's house. This is very well done, showing the progression of Yusef's feelings toward Jesus. The scene of Nicodemus leaving money for Jesus and the Apostles was extremely heart-wrenching. An absolutely stunning embellishment. The account of the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well was nicely done, but this brings up an interesting note. In the Gospels, the Samaritan woman is the first one Jesus tells that he is the Messiah, but in this series he has made that pronouncement to others before her. That aside, this is the first episode I have given a 10. Made me cry twice.

Biblical content in this episode; 20% Matthew 9:9-13; Luke 4:38-39; John 4:1-38.
