What I like about Jesus is that he brings everything into balance: common women were mostly ignored and had more a status of Things in the old testament - I am not including Sarah or other women of status who were privileged- but Jesus appears to women, draws them closer and shows the respect he has for them. This does not undermine men status in any way but bring a most needed balance in the social landscape: Marie of Magdala, Peter's mother in law, the Samaritan woman, his own mother to name a few. He heal them, respect them and in return they show gratitude in supporting his ministry. On his way to Calvary women were his best supporters and did not flee.
At his resurrection he appears first to women He is a role model for men then and now. His relationship to women deprives no one of their status but give us a clear understanding of how things should be: if a man knows his worth, women are not perceived as a threat but as a valuable complement they are and not reduced solely to housewife but best friend to their husband and mother to their children but also as active disciples and supporters of Christ: it's about time to get use to different, don't you think?
We need to remember that the events takes place within his close family circle - his brothers and mother are attending- and therefore his mother stepping in is not out of order as she gently do this suggestion for the sake of the reputation of this young married couple and their parents . This event, if unresolved could have spoiled the whole wedding! Therefore Mary was the best placed to suggest discretely some most needed support.
