Informative
electron16615 January 2020
I found it informative, found myself learning new things, even for someone with a Bachelor in Sciences, and think it's important for the youth of America to watch these few episodes, especially with the current state of affair of education in this country.

I learned more than I expected to

And even an unexpected laugh, I absolutely died at Jennifer Connelly's "Give me the child" line.

pretty good

Just as with Explained!, it is not fully a documentary.. It is some mixture of entertaining educative style... One learns couple of thing, but not fully scientifically covering the topic.

Complex but deep
kosmasp19 May 2020
How can one avoid any innuendos? It is quite difficult, at least for me. But here we go, with a docu series that has some highs and lows. Ah well, I knew it would be hard ... enough of that, because the show is not about juvenille humor. It does try to put a spotlight on many different issues. And by doing so, does succeed at times but also does not go deep enough in other areas (hey now it's you not me).

I reckon there may be more seasons than the one I watched, which means I might come again ... I mean revisit the series, to review my ... review and update it. As it is, this is interesting and better than another documentary I saw regarding sexuality. The theme and the topic is complex and as you can imagine, not everyone will always be fully satisfied ...

Smart and informative
kaylacooperstock8 January 2020
Some of the reviews on here clearly didn't like this series because it didn't fit into there personal ideas or what sex is and isn't. I can tell you that objectively this is an interesting and informative look at sex in modern times. I think whether you like it or not depends entirely on your views on sex and around it. If you are more closed minded, I'd skip this one. If you are interested in the topic and want to learn more, I'd give it a watch.

Extremely educative
BlackCatStyle3 January 2020
Probably one of the best documentary series I've watched with lost of information that I was not aware of. Might appeal more to women and less to men but I also think some parts of it are very useful to know by men as well. I truly hope this will reach as many girls and women as possible as I truly appreciate the note of encouragement and empowerment to make your own choices about your body and it did offer some interesting information to start researching if interested.

An informative series that brings awareness to rarely openly discussed topics related to sex and sexuality.
TV_viewerno12234556789108 January 2020
A refreshing series which approached topics that are rarely discussed in mainstream media. Information is condensed into 15-25 minute episodes. It provides understanding around what influences our fantasies and where attraction comes from. Sexualities that go beyond heterosexual are included. I found the episode on birth control informative and hadn't realised how exploitative and murky the history is. I hope the makers will include more episodes on love, relationships, sexual health. It was disappointing to only hear about consent within the context of BDSM as it applies to vanilla sex as well.

Went way too far down the alternative lifestyle road
darkside_beer3 January 2020
This series uses stats collected from the population as a whole, but then used almost exclusively gay, lesbian, and other alternative lifestyle speakers/experts to discuss those stats. With over half of their "sex scenes" depicting LGBT. Frankly I'm as liberal as they come, but this is how you make something totally non-relatable. Over 90% of the population does not fall into those groups. This was advertised as "sex in the human species" but quickly became all about sex from the perspective of less than 10% of people. That's a different show altogether.

Very enjoyable and interesting
toth-psk-25-5407873 January 2020
The documentary is very entertaining. Each part logically builds upon the previous one, thus making the documentary a full story.

Watch it with an open mind
Brian_21 January 2020
In a world where too many people either get their sex education from "abstinence only" crap or from porn, there is a great lack of quality material out there that is accurate and pleasing to the eye without being lewd. Sex, Explained walks this fine line well. It is a wonderful crash course on the world of human sexuality: why humans have sex, what we believe about sex, and how we have sex on our terms.

Cast your preconceived notions aside before you watch this show. Sex is a much, much richer world than you may know, and Sex, Explained invites you in.

Wonderful animation, and very informative!
jugalramnani15 January 2021
Makes a perfect toolkit for advanced sex ed, not only for the teens but adults as well. Its animation is a treat to the eyes, and one can only be amazed, by how wonderfully it grips the viewer's attention.

Gives an in depth exploration of topics like attraction, sexuality, birth control, childbirth, and fertility. Manages to focus on both the biology and the psychology of sex, the latter is highlighted by on-screen interviews while the former is efficiently visualised with the help of animation, archival footage, and so on.

Explains nothing
kris_C_Ham6 January 2020
Agenda heavy, inappropriate "isms," a lot of interviewing the layman and not a lot of actual information.

The fetish episode is cliche and unnecessary, the only worthwhile episode was birth control and it was like an introductory explanation for teen girls.

These episodes are not long enough to tackle the chosen topics and there was very obvious bias in reporting.

very little not to like
angelorwez26 February 2024
I initially thought this was a season of the Netflix show explained...which is an inferior show by the way...which is probably not a fair thing to say...but it's essentially from the same producers and i assume writers...

This show is great...the narration is good...janelle monae...which sidenote in my own opinion i think is the prettiest name of a person there is...she's good...you want to listen to her...

the other show explained used a different narrator for each episode...which is a good idea as it makes each episode have its own feel and identity...but it opens itself to the shortcomings of one or two narrators ruining it and not being too engaging...

This show gets it right...you find a good narrator...stick with her...her voice is weirdly objective...like the voice over on a proper documentary...she might actually be the best part of the show...

each episode is about an issue that is relevant...it's told from a woman's perspective...which is a good idea...it's sex explained...from the eye of a woman...

there's only like two episodes i didn't really like...the rest were fantastic...

it's a great show...hardly anything not to like...well done very informative...i learnt a few things i had no idea about...it really is the urban legend...edutainment...it did the impossible...

Only watch episode 3 & 4... the rest are stupid
0w06 January 2020
Only episode #3 is really good and episode #4 is OK I guess, the rest are trash however... They in-fact explained VERY LITTLE about the actual act of sexual intercourse, and more about the feelings and personal experiences of various people, which is completely opposite of what I expected this series to be, and honestly I don't care about random people's personal anecdotes... overall, it's a series that I regret spending my own time watching, and Netflix should be ashamed.

This is about reproduction. Not sex.
holmeselizabetha6 January 2020
Most of the episodes are about reproduction. We need education on that, but this isn't a documentary about sex or sexuality. It's just briefly about fetiches and then about babies. Not interesting. Change the name and it could warrant 3 stars.

Science Super Light
plasticanimalz22 April 2020
These felt like Buzzfeed videos in that you spend the majority of the time watching inexpensive graphics and hearing opinions of regular people, and the actual science and information is maybe 2-3 minutes tops of a 17-minute video. The first 4 minutes there was zero information and having to watch cheap graphics you would expect in an old video you see in high school health class. And what little science they give you a lot of it is just clips from old articles from the 2000s and '90s. The episodes seem more like a something an intern wrote out and then assembled a bunch of clips together, then hire a celebrity to narrate, and interview a few experts (though, we don't actually know if they're actually experts) for brief clips.

I suppose I'm not surprised to see Vox in the title, as I'm assuming their the producers. So, Buzzfeed wannabes? I've never been particularly impressed with Vox's writing and have learned to just avoid any articles by them as I find they tend to by heavily skewed towards the writer's personal opinions and very light on actual facts. They once had an article that was later removed promoting why we should be benevolent toward child predators. I mean, who signed off on that?

Vox trying to be an educational tool is kind of like Buzzfeed trying to be news, mostly a waste. It wasn't even entertaining and I certainly didn't learn anything new. It's more like they tried to build a show around a smidgen of information so they could make money off of it. Much better off watching something from National Geographic, Discovery, Science Channel, Smithsonian, etc.

"meh" at best. Very bias. Only ep 3&4 are worth it
cami04887 January 2020
I just wanted to see a series about biology on sex. About half the series had some good scientific points, but I found myself rolling my eyes at the other references to clear political biases I'd otherwise not care to hear. I thought it would have more documentary science and less anecdotals but I was wrong. Episode 1&2 are a waste of time. 3&4 were good. 5 was a lot of complaining.

Boring
Total_5_Destiny2 May 2021
Very little new information, with a very stale presentation. There was a lot more potential for this docu series but they chose to focus on the moet boring things with way to little debt. Other shows (like the dutch show spuiten en slikken) have done what this show attempted to do in a way more interesting way.

With regard to the presentation: very monotone voice delivery, boring way to tackle the subject and a real lack of interesting direction choices. Honestly felt like a collection of highschool presentations.

When Hollyweird makes science video
joeyford-5534231 May 2021
Oh man. It is nice they travel around the world and talk about body sizes and personality types. WHO says about one same sex person in every one-hundred with five in more modern communities. But in Hollywood and this show it is more like a quarter. They talk about wealth, animal science, biology, psychology, sociology, etc. Twins are different in type and desires. There are some interesting points but Hollywood poisons the well. Would hate to think this trash is being shown to kids in classrooms anywhere.

This is primarily a show meant for women, as I should have assume using Ms. Monae
nabusse8329 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is not a show about "sex explained" and I am offended by the heteronormativity. I thought by the first episode this would be inclusive. It's not. Move along breeders. I'm done being oppressed by your society.

Non Scientific Netflix Documentary Series
jack_o_hasanov_imdb27 April 2023
As usual, a less scientific Netflix series.

It's nice to talk to simple people, but it always goes in this direction. Isn't it a bit scientific? This is a serious matter. But they still try to be funny. I'm pissed off again :) The number of episodes could have been too much. Having 5 episodes on a topic like this is too few. There should have been 10-15 episodes here. While there is a lot to talk about and research (in scientific terms), it has become very superficial. I did not like this documentary. The original documentary "Explained" also chose the subjects well, but was still filmed in a superficial and unscientific way. It would be great if you take it a little seriously and make a documentary with a lot of scientific aspects.

another netflix one... -it feels as if they only do thoes series to maybe idk
imdbmoviereviews6 August 2020
To draw kids into netflix (with nothing explicit i'd say but u know...) or maybe to push the line becuse of all the stigma there's been in cable or idk why but it does seem like netflish pushes and invests in sexual "education" content

i mean i can't tell u how good it is i kinda skipped trought it and seems boring but seiouslly i just don't get where it's coming from

generic reality tv ok it's cheap to produce remaking of beloved and amazing animated tv series into real once... -well i think we can all understand the potencial but generic sexual content........?
