South African production house Nthibah Pictures isn’t afraid to take risks. The company, which was established in 2018, is coming off the back of fully-financing upcoming big-budget, high-octane genre title Boy Kills World, which opens in the U.S. today (April 26) across nearly 2,500 screens. The film, which is being released by Lionsgate’s sister label Roadside Attractions, stars Bill Skarsgård and is produced with Sam Raimi and is, says Nthibah Pictures’ chairman Wayne Fitzjohn and CEO Simon Swart, one of the “biggest-budgeted” titles to come out of South Africa.
“Not only is it the biggest budget from a South African production company by some margin, but also we’ve doubled down on the P&a,” says Fitzjohn.
“We raised the P&a [for the release] as well,” says Swart of the Moritz Mohr-directed project, which was shot entirely in South Africa. The film centers on Skarsgård’s Boy, who vows revenge after his...

A new animated TV series is in the works inspired by a video game featured in “Boy Kills World,” the upcoming martial arts action film starring Bill Skarsgård as a deaf boy trained to enact vengeance on those who murdered his family.
“Super Dragon Punch Force 3,” the real-life action-packed fighter video game that appears in the film (and will launch day-and-date with the U.S. and global release of “Boy Kills World” on April 26), has had its own animated series greenlit. Now in development, the show, which is set to dive into the universe of the game, will follow a highly-skilled yet dysfunctional team of misfits as they fight to defend their world from sentient robots, an ancient network of cultists and other intergalactic threats.

The original Fox’s ‘X-Men’ film series cast is the cast that we will associate with some of the most popular Marvel characters in years to come. If you think about Storm it’s impossible not to conjure up images of Halle Berry, or associate Patric Stewart with Charles Xavier.
Famke Janssen, the actress behind the iconic Jean Grey portrayal is still the best live-action Jean Grey, despite Sophia Turner also portraying the character in the latter installments.
With ‘Deadpool 3’ release looming on the horizon and all the various rumors associated with former X-Men characters making a big comeback for Deadpool’s first foray into the MCU, it’s impossible not to wonder whether Famke will make an appearance as Jean Grey as well.
The actress herself commented on the rumors in her interview with Screengeek.

The original cast of Fox’s ‘X-Men’ films will forever be linked with some of Marvel’s most beloved characters. When you think of Storm, Halle Berry immediately comes to mind, and Patrick Stewart is synonymous with Charles Xavier. Famke Janssen, who played the iconic Jean Grey, remains the definitive live-action portrayal, even though Sophie Turner took on the role in later films.
As the release of ‘Deadpool 3’ approaches and rumors swirl about former X-Men characters returning for Deadpool’s MCU debut, fans can’t help but speculate if Famke will reprise her role as Jean Grey too.
The actress herself commented on the rumors in her interview with Screengeek.

As fans campaign for a second season of "Queen Charlotte," we're still reeling from season one's incredible performances, namely Arsema Thomas's impressive portrayal of Lady Agatha Danbury. In "Bridgerton," Lady Danbury is an established noblewoman with a reputation for being a natural leader. In the spinoff, however, viewers catch a glimpse at her early life as an aristocrat, including her friendship with Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio), her complex relationship with Lord Danbury (Cyril Nri), and her beginnings as one of the most trusted - and feared - members of the ton.
For Thomas, the prospect of playing such a well-established and beloved character was "extremely scary." But that only made her more eager to do the character justice. "As an actor, you rarely get such a complex and challenging character to play, also specifically as a Black woman," she tells Popsugar.

From Jennifer Coolidge and Brian Cox to Sheryl Lee Ralph and Henry Winkler, this year’s Emmy race is filled with past winners hoping to pick up another trophy from the TV Academy. However, there is also a plethora of talent entering the awards conversation for the first time, thanks to their work on series including “Queen Charlotte,” “Shrinking” and “The Last of Us.”
After the success of “Bridgerton,” it’s no surprise that Shonda Rhimes’ spinoff series, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” is filled with talented new faces. India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest portray Queen Charlotte and King George III while Arsema Thomas portrays the young Agatha Danbury.
Together, the three actors were able to find comfort in leaning on one another, which helped with the pressure of joining a series with an established audience.
“For a lot of us, this was our first big job so there was this shared camaraderie.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a Bridgerton spinoff series that shows us how life was in the Ton during the early days of Queen Charlotte and King George’s marriage. We get to see how they meet and fall in love, how her reign leads to social change in the Ton, and how she became the strong and influential Queen that we see in Bridgerton’s first two seasons. But just because this series introduces us to younger versions of familiar characters doesn’t mean that it’s stuck in the past. Queen Charlotte also features an arc set in the “present day” Regency era of the original series that focuses on Charlotte, Lady Danbury, and Violet Bridgerton’s friendship.
Between both eras, Queen Charlotte has a massive cast full of new and familiar faces. If you want to be as up to date on the hot gossip of the ton as Lady Whistledown,...

Famke Janssen could hit you with a car and you’d probably say thank you. Few actors are quite so good at inflicting violence. Think of her squeezing Pierce Brosnan between her thighs as a deadly hitwoman in GoldenEye. Or her threatening to shove her foot so far up Josh Hartnett’s rear end in The Faculty that he’ll be “sucking her toes ’till Christmas”. Or her generating cosmic blasts of telekinetic energy as Jean Grey in X-Men. Today, though, the tables have been turned. Janssen is under siege.
“New York has been taken over by rats,” says the 57-year-old. “They’re not scared of humans any more! And now we have these new things called lantern flies – have you heard of them?” I admit I haven’t. Janssen’s eyes widen. “I must tell you! “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is again the No. 1 movie at the domestic box office.
In its second weekend of release, the latest installment in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe has collected 61 million from 4,534 North American theaters. Ticket sales were down 67 from its opening weekend, marking a steeper drop off compared to recent Marvel movies like “Eternals” (which declined 61 in its second weekend) and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (which declined 52 in its second weekend). However, that sizable decline is not surprising since “Doctor Strange 2” is coming off the 11th biggest opening weekend in history with 187 million. After 10 days on the big screen, the standalone superhero adventure has grossed a strong 291 million in North America.
At the international box office, the “Strange” sequel added 83.5 million from 49 markets. In total, the film has grossed 688.1 million globally.

Comcast reported a revenue of 31.0 billion and an earnings per share (Eps) of 78 cents, seeing its earnings jump as a result of increased viewership of the Olympics and Super Bowl Lvi, but it also logged an operation loss stemming from NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock to tune of 456 million, as per the media conglomerate’s first-quarter earnings report Thursday.
The numbers veered closely to analyst expectations via Yahoo Finance, which had a higher average estimate of 81 cents Eps on 30.54 billion for Q1. And compared to Q1 of 2021, earnings went up 9.9, and revenue jumped 14 when it was at 27.2 billion.
Peacock’s operating loss for the quarter of 456 million was a result of the higher programming and production costs associated with the Super Bowl and the Olympics, Comcast said, though it reported revenue for 472 million. “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” powered to 71 million in its domestic box office debut, a hopeful indication that family audiences are feeling better about returning to movie theaters.
In taking the No. 1 spot, Paramount’s kid friendly film towered over Sony’s Marvel adaptation “Morbius” and Universal’s Michael Bay action-adventure “Ambulance,” which debuted in fourth place with a disappointing 8.7 million.
Ticket sales for “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” set a new high watermark for video game adaptations, supplanting the opening weekend record established by its predecessor, 2020’s “Sonic the Hedgehog.” The first movie collected 58 million in its first three days of release and ended the President’s Day holiday weekend with a mighty 70 million.
Overseas, the “Sonic” follow-up added 37 million from 53 territories, taking its international tally to 70 million and global total to 141 million.
“This is an outstanding opening,” said David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research.

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (Sony/$5.99) leads all VOD charts for the third straight week since its price reduction. That’s two weeks longer than its hold on the top spot when it initially was released at $19.99 in early January.
Sony as a studio continues on a roll. This weekend “Uncharted” took in a stronger than expected $44 million in U.S./Canada theaters. Impressive as that was, it also is critical as the highest opening gross for a non-franchise or sequel release in over two years and it comes, like “Afterlife,” from a studio that has no direct streaming platform.
That makes its reliance on traditional strategies – first in theaters, then PVOD at a reduced but still sufficient six week period, later reduced price – before streaming critical. And they seem to be succeeding is the most important recent event in the evolving theater rebound story that is still unsettled.

The legacy of the late Ivan Reitman lives on with “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (Sony/$5.99) for which he was the sole producer, repeated at #1 on all VOD charts this week. Its recent reduced price sustained a successful multi-platform run ($200 million theatrical worldwide) for a $75 million production.
The film was directed by his son and reflects a return to box office form for both. Reitman père had more than 20 projects in varying stages of development. “Afterlife” showed he remained vital in comedy, a genre that gets short shrift in theaters today.
VOD charts showed little change this week, including any impact from last Tuesday’s Oscar nominations. “Dune” (Warner Bros./$5.99) rose from last week, taking two #2 slots and placing on all three. The only other films among the top contenders to appear are “King Richard” (Warner Bros./$19.99), which is #7 at Vudu, and “Belfast” (Focus/$19.99), #10 at iTunes.

Led by “Jackass Forever” (Paramount), box office rebounded from last weekend’s rock bottom. Its gross of $23.5 million came in at the higher end of expectations and helped lift total grosses to around $60 million.
Meantime, Neon — which had the last two breakout openings for subtitled films with “Parasite” and “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” — saw a terrific start for “The Worst Person in the World.” With a per-theater average of $33,760 in four New York/Los Angeles theaters, it gave fresh hope that a high-end specialized film could bring viewers back to theaters.
At $60 million, this weekend’s total represents an improvement from the awful last two weeks — but you’d have to go back to 2000 to find a pre-Covid weekend that grossed less. Compared to the same pre-Covid weekend in 2020, the box office was 64 percent — the best showing since New Year’s weekend. The four-week rolling average remains a lowly 48 percent.

Things stayed pretty much status quo over the box-office weekend as Spider-Man: No Way Home held the number one spot by $3.6 million and the rest of the top ten stayed pretty much the same as last week, save for the departure of one film and two titles flipping positions.
Spider-Man: No Way Home finished the weekend with $11.0 million. This allowed the film to creep closer to surpassing Avatar as the third highest domestic grossing film of all time as No Way Home stands at $735.9 million and Avatar sits at $760.5 million. Second place held steady with Scream pulling in $7.4 million to lift its three-week total to $62.1 million. The animated musical Sing 2 crooned well enough to remain in third place earning $4.8 million and increasing its six-week tally to $134.5 million. Meanwhile, the romance Redeeming Love was locked in at number four this weekend with $1.9 million. The film now lays claim to a two-week total of $6.5 million.

It turned out to be déjà vu all over again at the box office as Sony’s competition-killer, Spider-Man: No Way Home, just kept cruising along as the number one movie in North America with an $11 million haul in its seventh weekend in theaters. With no major new releases during an otherwise sleepy January frame marked by white-out blizzard conditions in the northeast, the top five spots on the domestic front remained unchanged. Meanwhile, overseas, Peter Parker and company soared past the $1 billion mark—and that’s without even playing in the world’s biggest moviegoing market, China.
Snagging first place for the sixth time in its seven-week run, Spider-Man: No Way Home led a lackluster session in theaters, dipping just -21.5% from the previous frame. The PG-13-rated blockbuster earned a $2,993 per-screen average at 3,675 locations. Spidey’s domestic box-office total now stands at $735.9 million, which keeps it in fourth...

Maybe Sony knew something when they delayed “Morbius” from its planned release this weekend. Omicron might not have been as harmful as it appeared when the studio delayed the film until April 1. But the winter blast that disrupted outdoor activity in the Northeast would have reduced its hopes for a strong opening.
In its absence (and without any other wide opening), the three day total will come to only $35 million. That makes it the weakest weekend since May 21-23 last year, just before “A Quiet Place II” opened and theaters started seeing steady improvement. This is how low a number this is – the last time the lowest gross of a year for a weekend was less than twice as much was in 2014.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony) scored its likely final #1 placement with an $11 million take, down 21 percent. Though a good hold, that put it at the lower end of...

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” is the box office juggernaut that can’t be caught.
The comic book adventure, starring Tom Holland as Marvel’s favorite teen web-slinger, opened in theaters in December and has spent each subsequent weekend except one as the top movie at the domestic box office. Now in its seventh weekend of release, “No Way Home” has again secured the No. 1 spot over holdovers, including “Scream” and “Sing 2,” capping off a particularly quiet January at the movies.
Over the weekend, Sony’s superhero sequel collected $11 million from 3,675 North American venues, a scant 17% decline from its prior outing. Those ticket sales put Spidey’s latest exploits at $735 million at the box office, maintaining its position as the fourth-highest grossing domestic release in history.
Presently, “No Way Home” is only $25 million from unseating “Avatar” ($760 million) as the third-biggest movie ever (not adjusted for inflation). For any other pandemic-era release,...

Another weekend, another easy No. 1 spot at the box office for “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Columbia Pictures’ monster MCU hit is continuing to run circles around its competition, staying atop the domestic box office in its seventh weekend of release.
“No Way Home” is projected to rake in an additional $10.4 million over the weekend, a mere 26% drop from its previous weekend. After being briefly toppled from the No. 1 spot by the opening weekend of Paramount’s “Scream,” the Tom Holland vehicle climbed back to the top of the box office last weekend, showing stronger legs than its horror competitor. Arachnids have eight of them, after all.
With January offering very little in the realm of high profile theatrical releases, “No Way Home” has been left at peace over the past few weeks, remaining the primary draw for theatergoers after the holiday season. After the weekend, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will...

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” recently took down “Black Panther” at the U.S. box office to become the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time. Now it’s setting its sights on “Avatar.”
As of this writing, Sony/Marvel’s red-suited superhero has $721 million in the bank, while “Avatar” (after its original 2009 run plus a special 2010 re-release) finished at $760 million in the states. However, there’s a big caveat with those numbers. It only took “Spider-Man” 39 days to hit the $721 million mark, while James Cameron‘s blue humanoids achieved that feat in a much longer period of time, 81 days. With no signs of slowing down, it seems quite likely that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will surpass “Avatar’s” numbers in the coming weeks. That would put it in third place on the domestic all-time list, behind only “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” ($936 million) and “Avengers: Endgame” ($858 million).

He’s back…and it didn’t take very long for his return either. A week after getting bumped from the top spot at the domestic box office by the latest Scream installment, Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home retook first place in its sixth weekend in theaters, racking up $14.1 million in receipts. Not bad for a movie that’s already been around for a month and a half. Meanwhile, there were two new wide releases over the weekend…not that anyone would notice. Universal’s faith-based romance, Redeeming Love, snuck into fourth place with a $3.7 million debut while the mothball-scented historical fantasy, The King’s Daughter, was finally unspooled after sitting on the shelf for seven years and proceeded to belly-flop into eighth place.

Best news first: After an elevated holiday weekend, only one film in the top 10 dropped more than 30 percent. “Scream” (Paramount) fell 59 percent in its second weekend, par for the second stanza for a horror film. That was enough to allow “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony), off 30 percent with $14.1 million, to return to the top spot in its sixth week.
The Marvel marvel is at $721 million domestic and just under $1.7 billion worldwide. That North American number is almost $500 million better than “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” a gap never before seen between the top two films of the last two years.
All of the holds were aided by the absence of competition. Two new wide releases stemmed from producers who hoped that the lack of new product could represent an opportunity, but they failed to attract much interest. “Redeeming Love” (Universal service deal), a faith-based 19th-century child trafficking story,...

As the box office labors through another dry spell, Sony/Marvel’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has retaken the No. 1 spot on the charts from Paramount/Spyglass’ “Scream,” earning $14.1 million in its sixth weekend.
Having passed the domestic run of “Black Panther” last weekend, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” now joins the fellow MCU film among the shortlist of films since the turn of the century to earn at least five No. 1 weekends. Such an achievement has become increasingly rare as the rise of home entertainment has made the box office more frontloaded than in the ’80s and ’90s.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” currently ranks fourth on the all-time box office domestic charts with a North American total of $721 million. “Avatar” sits in third with $760.5 million. Globally, the film now stands sixth all-time with $1.69 billion, passing the global run of “Jurassic World” in 2015.

It’s Peter Parker’s world, we’re just living in it.
After a brief hiatus to let another movie sell a few tickets, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has unseated “Scream” and reclaimed the top spot on domestic box office charts. Now in its sixth weekend of release, Sony’s comic book sequel added another $14.1 million from 3,705 North American venues this weekend, enough for first place.
It’s rare for any film to secure the No. 1 slot in its sixth outing, though “Spider-Man: No Way Home” didn’t have much in the way of competition. After one weekend outside of the No. 1 slot, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” could be surging ahead to lead the domestic box office once again. The Marvel entry and the slasher sequel “Scream” are locked in a tight battle this weekend, with “No Way Home” projected just ahead of its competition.
Columbia Pictures is projecting a $13.5 million gross for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” over its sixth weekend at the domestic box office, a soft 30% drop from its previous outing. After practically redefining the rules of the pandemic era box office, the mega-hit MCU entry is finally beginning to wind down its theatrical run. Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Brian Tyler and Breton Vivian’s score for Redeeming Love, which is set for release tomorrow via Milan Records, as the Universal Pictures title hits theaters.
The film directed by DJ Caruso is a Western romance based on the bestselling novel by Francine Rivers that watches as a young couple’s relationship clashes with the harsh realities of the California Gold Rush of 1850.
For the project marking Tyler’s sixth collaboration with Caruso, he and Vivian looked to craft a sweeping score that captured the heart of its story and themes.
“Composing the score for Redeeming Love was truly one of the most moving experiences of my life. Incredibly directed by long-time collaborator DJ Caruso, the characters imbue such a sense of grace and love that I wanted to…write music that evoked their raw emotion in all of its complexity,” said Tyler.

Two new wide releases open this weekend, but we are looking at another weekend dominated byScream and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The face-off between the two franchise films has animated an otherwise quiet January, and while Scream swiftly displaced Spidey from the top spot last weekend with a steady lead at $30 million compared to $20 million, this weekend’s rematch could be a close one. Spider-Man, going into its sixth weekend, has seen drops in recent weeks of around 40%, and another similar drop this weekend would put it around $12 million. That’s right where Scream would be at with a 60% drop, so this weekend’s number one could go in either direction. With no new wide releases slated for next weekend, expect another rematch for the top spot.

“Scream,” the hit sequel in the long-running slasher series, will keep terrorizing audiences over the weekend.
Only one movie, Universal’s faith-based romantic drama “Redeeming Love,” is opening nationwide, and the poorly reviewed film, which combines a gold-rush setting with a parable about redemption and the oldest profession, isn’t looking like it’ll put up much of a fight on North American box office charts.
That means “Scream,” which debuted at No. 1 last weekend with $34 million over the extended Martin Luther King Jr. holiday frame, should have no trouble staying victorious. The R-rated horror film is tracking to earn $14 million (give or take) in its second weekend of release, representing a standard 50-55% decline from its traditional three-day opening.
Though “Scream” is expected to retain its leading spot, Sony’s comic book behemoth “Spider-Man: No Way Home” won’t be far behind. Now in its sixth weekend of release,...

For theaters, January 2022 is becoming a cruel month. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” exceeded all expectations when it grossed about $627 million in its first 19 days of North American release, but there is almost no chance that its momentum will carry over. Even as “Spider-Man” will provide (by far) the highest gross for the month, box office will be less than half of January 2020. Only “Scream” stands a chance of making $100 million by the end of its run.
Two years ago, total ticket sales came to just under $900 million. That was lower than four of the five prior Januarys, but “Bad Boys for Life,” “The Rise of Skywalker,” and “1917” each took in over $100 million during the month. This January, only “Spider-Man” is likely to make over $100 million. The total for all titles will likely to be under $450 million.

"You have no idea who she is!" Universal Pictures has debuted the second trailer for the film Redeeming Love, a passionate romance story from filmmaker D.J. Caruso and adapted from Francine Rivers' novel of the same name. Redeeming Love is a powerful retelling of the biblical book of Hosea against the backdrop of the California Gold Rush of 1850. Abigail Cowen and Tom Lewis co-star as Angel and Michael, the two young lovers are the center of this story of love against all odds, as they connect despite their differences. Opening in early 2022 in theaters. "Redeeming Love shows there is no brokenness that love can't heal." The ensemble cast also includes Famke Janssen, Logan Marshall-Green, Nina Dobrev, Livi Birch, Eric Dane, Brandon Auret, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, and Josh Taylor. This looks like a passionate story of true love, but the religious aspects seem overwhelming. Enough to turn me away from wanting to watch this.
