Moana 2 has revealed which songs are being submitted for Oscar consideration, and the choices highlight an unusual Oscar “rule” Disney inspired!
Whenever a new Disney animated movie hits, folks are ready for a song from it to be nominated for an Oscar and, more often than not, winning. It’s been that way since the 1990s and has led to some intriguing choices and winners.
With Moana in 2016, it was no shock that Tony-award-winning writer/composer Lin-Manuel Miranda provided some great songs. The one nominated for the Oscar was “You’re Welcome,” which lost the award to “City of Stars” from La La Land.
Miranda won’t be handling the writing duties for Moana 2. Instead, the songs come from Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, best known for the acclaimed unofficial Bridgerton: The Musical and getting a huge break with this film.

For 40 years Clamp has revolutionized manga. Starting off as a doujin circle consisting of four women before making a professional debut with their Rg Veda series in Monthly Wings in 1989, the collective would go on to publish manga for all demographics — but primarily shojo manga. In that time, they brought the world some of the most iconic series that transcend gender and cultural boundaries from Cardcaptor Sakura to xxxHOLiC to Chobits to Tokyo Babylon and many more. The National Art Center in Roppongi hosted a Clamp Exhibition that celebrated their history with a showcase of artwork from throughout their career. This expansive showcase of their work was designed to serve as a definitive tribute to the group. It traced Clamp’s trajectory from their professional debut to the modern day, aimed at conveying the core appeal through five key categories symbolized by each letter of the group’s name: Color,...

“Looks like downhill from here,” Mia Berrin quips at the top of Pom Pom Squad’s second album, Mirror Starts Moving Without Me. It’s an apt opening for a project steeped in hellish Alice in Wonderland imagery and named after the uncanny horror movie trope where a character’s reflection moves out of synch. On Mirror, Berrin, the band’s lead singer and songwriter, leans into this darker tone of the Lewis Carroll classic as she illustrates an identity crisis in overdrive.

Expect the summer of 2025 to be a big one, with Disney announcing two huge live-action projects are coming that year!
Disney movies have been having their share of problems in the last year. There have been too many high-profile duds like Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Wish. Even the MCU has faltered with The Marvels an outright bomb amid behind-the-scenes turmoil.
It’s not helped by the 2023 Hollywood strikes halting productions, and Disney has been forced to rearrange its slate. However, the success of Inside Out 2 has restored confidence in the company. They’ll be keeping that up with Moana 2 coming out at Thanksgiving and Mufasa for Christmas.
Disney had already rearranged their slate as Snow White, intended for this fall, will now premiere on March 21, 2025. Meanwhile, Pixar’s Elio, which was supposed to come this past June, was pushed an entire year to June 13.

Agatha All Along has been a big success for Disney+ and, even better, is a sign Marvel is learning to cut the budgets!
One of the biggest complaints about movies and TV shows these days has been the outrageous budgets. Once, the idea of $100 million for a movie would have been outrageous but these days, it feels low-key. Budgets have ballooned for various reasons, which hurts the bottom line for any projects.
Disney has felt that majorly as last year saw some huge box office flops like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Wish and The Marvels. All of them were made worse because of the outrageous budgets, with Dial reportedly costing over $300 million.
It’s the same with TV shows as Amazon Prime Video’s Citadel, a six-episode spy adventure, supposedly cost a shocking $300 million. For Disney+, the various MCU and Star Wars shows have likewise cost a bundle,...

Exclusive: Director Jeff Celentano and producer Warren Ostergard, who recently collaborated on Dennis Quaid movie The Hill, have reunited to launch Enliven Content, a film and TV production company with a focus on “true, inspiring, and uplifting stories”.
The company’s debut development project is Cody’s Wish, the true story of champion racehorse Cody’s Wish and his endearing bond with his namesake, Cody Dorman, a Kentucky teenager with a rare genetic disorder and love for horse racing.
Dorman first met the horse during a Make-a-Wish visit to Gainsborough Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, when Cody’s Wish was a five-month-old foal in 2018. Unnamed at the time, the animal is said to have walked over to Dorman’s wheelchair and put his head in the boy’s lap. Dorman drew the same reaction in succeeding visits, and the horse never failed to acknowledge the young boy’s presence. When it...

When Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger parted ways with the company in 2020, he was succeeded by former Parks Chairman Bob Chapek. Unfortunately for Chapek, he had to lead the company through an unprecedented global pandemic and company upheavals, and was quickly replaced by the return of Bob Iger.
Since his return to the company, Iger has been in a bit of a hot seat, facing criticism for comments made during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes while trying to turn around a series of disappointing film releases and competing with the upcoming opening of Epic Universe at the Universal Orlando Resort. As the company nears three years since Iger's return, it is now facing the daunting task of trying to pick his new successor.

Disney Animation Studios is undergoing a huge shift. Will a change in leadership be able to restore the brand?
As many know, Disney has had a rough go at the box office for the last couple of years. 2023 was marked with several box office disappointments like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and even the once unstoppable MCU faltered. They have done better in 2024 with Inside Out 2 and Deadpool and Wolverine and hope for Moana 2 to be a big smash.
There have already been shifts for the live-action portion of the studio, and now the animation department is following suit. This past week, we saw the announcement that Jennifer Lee will be stepping down after six years as Chief Creative Officer, with Jared Bush (who co-directed Zootopia) taking over.
Lee issued a statement of her gratitude for the job.

There has been a shake-up at Walt Disney Animation today. Jennifer Lee, the chief creative officer, is stepping down to work on Frozen 3 and Frozen 4. Jared Bush will replace Lee in that position.
Bush is known for Zootopia and Encanto. He also wrote the original Moana film and co-wrote the upcoming Moana 2 sequel. Both Lee and Bush are executive producers on the upcoming Moana 2 film.
Lee has been the chief creative officer for the past six years. So, while films like Frozen 2 performed well, Wish and Strange World did not.
It’s unclear if this is a demotion for Lee or if she is there to push the crunch on Frozen 3 and Frozen 4. She will be writing and directing Frozen 3 but only writing Frozen 4.

Director-writer Jared Bush is replacing Jennifer Lee as chief creative officer of the Walt Disney Animation Studios as Lee returns to filmmaking full time at the company and stewards the Frozen franchise, Disney announced Thursday. Bush will report to Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman, effective immediately.
Lee, who had been in the top gig for six years, will direct and write Frozen 3. She’s also set to write and executive produce Frozen 4.
Her departure as Cco isn’t a complete surprise. During her tenure, the storied animation studio suffered major misses, including 2022’s Strange World and last year’s Wish. But she wasn’t without her wins: Encanto won an Oscar and was a major commercial success after finding its groove. And the company’s upcoming slate includes the highly anticipated sequel Moana 2, out in theaters Nov. 27.

Al Jardine, multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of The Beach Boys, has unearthed a new song titled “Wish.”
The track was written by Jardine in the early 1990s alongside his songwriting partner, Larry Dvoskin. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Jardine described “Wish” as an ode to the Wilson brothers and his Beach Boys bandmates, Brian and Dennis. “It just dawned on me how much I missed them,” Jardine said about writing the track. “Dennis, of course, had passed, and Brian was pretty much out of the action. I felt very emotional.”

Joss Whedon's large-scale action picture "Avengers: Age of Ultron" was released in theaters in the spring of 2015, and it featured a gaggle of Marvel superheroes teaming up to fight the eponymous evil super-robot. Ultron (voiced by James Spader) was an artificial intelligence accidentally created by Iron Man while he was constructing a global, spacebound security system intended to make superhero-ing easier. Upon achieving consciousness, Ultron spends about two minutes on the internet and instantly decided that humanity needed to be wiped out, shunting its own consciousness into a series of robot bodies and going about its wicked business. The Avengers, naturally, smash up all the Ultron bots.
Ultron is destroyed at the end of that film and has only shown up in additional Marvel Cinematic Universe entries in smaller roles since then, including the animated TV show "What If...?" However, Spader will reportedly reprise Ultron for the upcoming "WandaVision...

When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019 in one of the biggest media takeovers of all time, the House of Mouse absorbed its film slate — and promptly had to slog through an endless series of commercial duds.
Movies like “X-Men” spinoffs “Dark Phoenix” and “New Mutants,” Brad Pitt’s astronaut drama “Ad Astra,” buddy comedy “Stuber,” Harrison Ford-led canine adventure “The Call of the Wild” and animated pigeon comedy “Spies in Disguise” were rejected by audiences and sputtered at the box office. Worse, they didn’t exactly instill confidence in the film assets that resulted from the $71.3 billion mega-merger.
“Those Fox titles that were part of the deal but weren’t made by Disney seemed like they were orphaned,” says senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “With any merger, there are going to be growing pains. And this is a slow-moving business.”

Disney now has three hits currently in theaters. “Alien: Romulus” exceeded expectations to hit about $41.5 million domestically in its opening weekend. Globally, the film reached about $108.2 million.
This is a good start for the film, which has an estimated budget of $80 million (not counting the millions in ads). If you use the normal estimates to predict break even, the film must bring in about $160 million—$200 million, and it’s already halfway there.
As I mentioned, Disney currently has three “hit” films in theaters. “Deadpool & Wolverine” has earned about $1.1 billion and is now the top box office for an “R-rated” film.
“Inside Out 2” is still in theaters over two months later and is at almost $1.6 billion, making it the biggest animated film in history and number ten on the top films of all time list.

“Alien: Romulus” ripped into the domestic box office with $41.5 million, marking the second-highest start in the long-running “Alien” franchise. Those ticket sales were enough for the newest chapter in Disney and 20th Century’s sci-fi horror saga to end the three-week reign of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which just overtook “Joker” as the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history with $1.14 billion.
These achievements are capping off Disney’s stellar summer streak, which ignited with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (May’s highest grossing movie with $397 million) and continued through “Inside Out 2” (June’s highest grossing movie with $1.597 billion) and “Deadpool & Wolverine” (July’s highest grossing movie with $1.14 billion). The studio earlier this month became the first of 2024 to surpass $3 billion in worldwide ticket sales and should continue to pad that total with “Moana 2” (Nov. 27) and “Mufasa: The Lion King” (Dec. 20) on the calendar through the year’s end.

“Alien: Romulus,” the latest chapter in a sci-fi and horror saga that taught audiences that “in space, no one can hear you scream,” is making some noise at the box office. The film earned a solid $6.5 million in Thursday previews and is expected to earn $28 million to $38 million in its first weekend of release. However, some rivals and independent tracking services believe that Disney and 20th Century, the studios behind the film, are being conservative in their estimates. They expect “Alien: Romulus” to debut between $40 million or $50 million.
The Thursday numbers certainly suggest that the final results will be on the higher end of projections. They compare favorably with other recent horror-tinged releases such as “A Quiet Place: Day One,” which earned $6.7 million in previews before ending its opening weekend with $52 million in the bank, or “Nope,” which netted $6.4 million before premiering to $44 million in its first weekend.

Jeanette Moreno King’s daughter is 17 and wants to eventually work in animation. As the president of The Animation Guild — a union that represents more than 5,000 artists, writers, technicians and production workers who have been credited on Kung Fu Panda 4, Wish and other recent releases — Moreno King, you might think, would eagerly encourage this dream. But at this juncture, she’s instead advising caution. “I can’t promise her that that’s going to be possible,” she says.
The animation industry is turmoil as Moreno King’s union entered its latest round of contract negotiations with top Hollywood studios and streamers on Aug. 12. While the larger entertainment business undergoes a major contraction, rounds of layoffs have buffeted top firms like Netflix Animation, Dreamworks Animation and Pixar in the last few years. After a steady takeoff in May with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” Disney has been flying high at the box office as the first studio with back-to-back $1 billion hits with “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Now it’s looking for a smooth landing with 20th Century’s “Alien: Romulus.”
Set between the first two — and most popular — installments of the legendary horror franchise, “Romulus” sees the “Alien” series entrusted to “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe” director Fede Alvarez, who has made it a point to show off his film’s use of practical sets and effects wherever possible.
That approach came with a reported production budget of $80 million before marketing. That’s lower than the $97 million for Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant,” which grossed $74.2 million domestic and $240 million worldwide. If “Romulus” can match that record, it will be a modest win for Disney after a resurgent summer.

At this year’s D23, Disney’s “ultimate fan event” held near Disneyland every two years, the company that leads Hollywood in creating world-class entertainment from beloved characters and time-tested stories wasn’t on its usual solid footing.
While the presentations featuring Disney luminaries from Pixar’s Pete Docter to Avatar’s James Cameron were impressive, there was also a keen sensation of déjà-vu. It was like eating at the Cheesecake Factory – there’s a giant, phonebook-sized menu, but everything still ends up tasting the same.
D23 was chock-full of announcements that signaled a doubling down on tested IP (intellectual property). At the convention, everything old was new again… and again… and again.
The presentation suggested that Disney is clearly on the back foot and retreating to what it knows best. This year, “Inside Out 2” broke what some considered a slump for Pixar, earning $1.59 billion; so did “Deadpool & Wolverine” for Marvel Studios,...

Disney/Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” has achieved its destiny, joining “Joker” as the second R-rated film to gross $1 billion at the global box office.
The film needed three weekends to reach that milestone, grossing a strong $54 million domestically this weekend to bring its total to $494 million in North America and an estimated $535 million overseas. With $1.02 billion grossed, Disney is the first studio ever to have back-to-back releases reach $1 billion, as Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” crossed that mark last month and will pass $1.6 billion in the coming week.
At this pace, exhibitor sources estimate that “Deadpool & Wolverine” is currently on pace to clear at least $1.4 billion in global grosses. That would be enough to clear the unadjusted theatrical runs of megahits like “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Black Panther,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and even “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

In “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the heroes are exiled to The Void, a wasteland where forgotten characters of 20th Century Fox’s Marvel films wander. The studio’s iconic logo lies decrepit and half-buried, a tombstone for a history of superhero films that came to an end with “The New Mutants,” released to poor reviews in 2020, a year after Disney’s 2019 acquisition of Fox.
The resurrection of that spandex-wearing menagerie of IP has led “Deadpool & Wolverine” to a $438 million global opening weekend, the largest the box office has seen since “Avatar: The Way of Water” at the end of 2022. Its $211 million domestic haul stands as the highest ever for an R-rated film, and after passing $500 million in less than a week, it’s in line to join “Joker” as only the second film with that rating to gross $1 billion globally.

“Deadpool & Wolverine,” a comic book adventure that pairs two of Marvel’s most popular characters, is turbocharging the box office.
Disney’s superhero sequel has collected $205 million in its opening weekend, ranking as the eighth-best debut of all time ahead of 2018’s “Black Panther” ($202 million) and behind 2015’s “Jurassic World” ($208 million) and 2012’s “The Avengers” ($207 million). Only nine films in Hollywood history have crossed the $200 million milestone in their opening weekends. Ticket sales also easily surpassed 2016’s “Deadpool” ($132 million) to set the record for the biggest R-rated opening weekend ever. The 2018 sequel, “Deadpool 2,” now stands as the third-biggest R-rated debut with $125 million. Among the newest installment’s many benchmarks, “Deadpool & Wolverine” landed by far the biggest start of the year, overtaking Disney’s Pixar sequel “Inside Out 2” ($155 million debut).
Internationally, “Deadpool & Wolverine” captured $233.3 million for a staggering global tally of $438 million. After three days of release,...

Getting black-out drunk is a dangerous game. You can drop your guard while unaware of your actions, resulting in unforgivable acts and shattered friendships. What We Do in the Shadows actor Harvey Guillén stands to learn a thing or two about irresponsibility and the power of alcohol in That Friend, a bromance comedy and directorial debut of writer-directors Will Sterling and Alex Wall.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, That Friend finds Guillén playing Paul, “that one friend we all have whose invitation for “one drink” seems harmless but the next thing you know, you’re drunk on a Tuesday, swaying in your kitchen eating dry top ramen out of the bag and wishing you hadn’t just sent that text. Disney and Pixar have a win with “Inside Out 2.” The Pixar sequel has finally passed “Frozen 2” to be the top-grossing animated film, not counting the “Lion King” remake, which earned $1.65 billion in 2019. Since it was a computer-generated film, many aren’t counting it as an animated film.
Until now, “Frozen 2” held the title of “highest-grossing animated film” with its $1.45 billion worldwide total, but “Inside Out 2” beat that with a $1.462 billion global total.
This also makes “Inside Out 2” the 13th highest-grossing film of all time. Now, Disney has about nine of the top-grossing films under its umbrella.
“Inside Out 2” was released almost six weeks ago, on June 14, 2024. Since then, the film has made $601 million domestically and $861 million internationally. It has yet to be released in Japan, with an opening date of August 1, 2024. Which means the total is just going to keep increasing.
