We finally made a Hollywood film
sneakydude19 April 2010
For years, I've heard Bulgarian audiences wonder why we cannot produce a movie that holds up when compared to Hollywood comedies. Well, now we have. And the result is pretty satisfying. The first thing that struck me about the movie was how professionally it was made. The camera-work, the editing, the sound mixing, everything was of a pretty high standard, which is not something that Bulgarian films have recently managed. The acting was generally mediocre and the dialogue was sloppy at times, but overall all scenes were watchable, even the more talky ones. The focus of the movie was not in the performances anyway. The tempo was brilliant. At one point I thought the scenes were too short and the film would lack cohesiveness, but by the ending this style of editing makes sense and the film plays great, seeming neither too short, nor too long. While this is predominantly a comedy, deeper themes are there and they are examined in a non-intrusive way even if they are mainly Bulgarian-specific. Being able to understand all the jokes will enhance the viewing immensely but that does not mean that foreign audiences will not appreciate the film.

Overall I give it 8/10 simply because the movie is head and shoulders above any Bulgarian comedy that has been attempted in the last decades. For non-Bulgarian audiences the film is a solid 7.

It would've been lower if i wasn't Bulgarian...
drakula200519 April 2010
Let me straighten this up-the movie isn't bad at all, but I think, the main problem of Bulgarian movies isn't the lack of ideas, but the lack of genre. When i walked in, the posters as well as the trailer, talked about some kind of a comedy. This isn't a comedy-it has funny moments, but one can count them easily, because they were that few.And at least 50 percent of them, and that means three, were in the trailer.

The movie has politics involved in it, but it isn't a political movie either-this is a movie with fine actors, both Bulgarian and British, but without doubt, a movie made mostly for Bulgarians-there are political references, only a Bulgarian can understand, and jokes made specifically for them.

The acting was one of the things i liked, but when a movie doesn't stick up to it's genre, you can't be sure, if those were one-time performances, or not.Alan Ford, a British actor, known mostly with his parts in Guy Ritchie's movies, wasn't at his regular level. He was good, but looked a little bit spooked and shy in a foreign movie.

Something i liked was the cinematography-the movie was shot in great style i little bit blurry and old-fashioned, but in a good way- and that's the director to blame-hi did a fine job in this movie-making aspect.

The one thing about the plot, i really don't understand is, how the ending adds up with the rest of the movie. The one thing i don't like about movies, is when it is all the same in the end.The characters haven't evolved, the whole situation hasn't been changed since the very beginning.Nothing changed, except a few missing ducks and a dead man lying on a pavement-that's all,Nothing really matters.Nothing significant to appreciate and value as useful the rest of the time.

Overall, this movie isn't bad, it just isn't what it promises to be.Above average, considering all the American "movies", that are flushing out of nowhere, but could've been way better. With this fresh story, and talented actors, and the charisma one could accomplish in the middle of two different religions, traditions, cultures, worlds, this could've been a pretty memorable and intriguing roller-coaster ride.

My rate would've been a little lower, but considering the obvious fact i'm a Bulgarian, i just can't rate it lower...Instead of a six, i'm giving it a seven...

My rate: 6.5/10

Bulgarian comedy
v-5628914 March 2020
I have never been to Bulgaria yet and do not know the culture deeply. But the movie was funny.. Kinda crazy comedy where the story keeps tangling more and more.. It's funny how the characters escape from the absurd situation they got themselves into...

A fine Eastern European treat
snajgez19 October 2010
I'm not a Bulgarian, but I absolutely loved this movie (well, in the beginning it seemed a bit vague, but soon the jokes began to fall out of the closet), probably because I'm from the same region and sharing similar history, therefore I have recognized many of the cultural clichés used in the movie. I loved the character of the President's wife, as well as the ambassadors. Well casted and brilliantly written. Loved the worried British ornithologist part. These scenes beautifully infiltrated some of the English clichés - as we, Eastern Europeans see them - into the movie. Overall I am really happy that Bulgarians could produce such a movie. Never could have happened in Lithuania - we are too serious. It's very brave and it's a talent to be able to laugh from yourself.

A fair attempt at modern cinema
stak44118 April 2011
As a short introduction, I would like to mention that this is the first time I write a review on this board. I felt obliged to do it for 2 reasons: 1. I'm Bulgarian and I've waited a long time to see a quality Bulgarian movie; 2. Most Bulgarians giving the reviews give a biased judgment, including (but not limited to) the clichés "OMFG, this was the best movie evAr!" ,"Better than Hollywood crap", "Perfect", etc.. But since I'm a fan of (global) cinema I gave it my best to write an objective review.

After watching the movie for around 30 minutes, you will start getting the feeling that this is another Guy Ritchie production. And this is actually the movie's strongest and weakest point. Strong - because you have good directing, quality camera work, interesting characters and a few interweaving subplots. And bad - because the settings and scenery are dull (you almost have no idea that this is actually taking place in London), the comedy element is almost missing (despite the movie being announced as comedy) and some of the subplots are really...lets say strange (e.g. the ducks subplot). The latter was for me the biggest flaw. In comparison, movies like "Snatch" have numerous subplots and characters that constantly cross each other's path and even though some of them are really absurd you never get the feeling that they are out of place. In Mission London, however, the best effect that some of the subplots achieve is to confuse you.

But even with all the negatives, I think this movie did excellent job of showing that Bulgarian studios are capable of producing quality product. This was a great first attempt and I'm looking forward to the next ones. 7 out of 10

Hilarious
viharg17 April 2010
This is a hilarious movie, especially for Bulgarians. I am not sure how much of it will be comprehensible for a foreign audience, and I'm looking forward to some non-Bulgarian reviews. Anyway, there is a lot to laugh about. The film presents in a very benign, comical way many of the shortcomings and limitations of the Bulgarian mindset. The First Lady, the Ambassador, the embassy cook - the characters are fleshy and ring true, yet very funny. I also liked the cinematography. The soundtrack was cool, but a few Bulgarian songs could definitely be added for more authenticity. All in all Mission London is definitely worth watching if you want to know more about the peculiarities and daily challenges of the Bulgarian spirit.

A great innovation.
lerroxx25 April 2010
I've never really appreciated the "modern" Bulgarian humor. It always has to be vulgar and obvious... not to mention repetitive. When I walked into the theater I was expecting to be bored out of my mind and if lucky to catch some Z's. I was pleasantly surprised. The movie had taste. The comedy was well thought through. The plot was interesting and hard to predict. While blown out of proportions Mission London perfectly describes Bulgarian mentality and way of life. And for a nation that gets things done half way this movie was almost perfect with no cutbacks and unnecessary BS.

I'm glad this movie wasn't a disappointment. And will gladly watch it again.

A comedy only to those who match the characters in the movie.
mostun28 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is an average attempt at creating a serious movie. All due respect for the efforts of the staff and cast and directors, but the result differed my expectations.

First is the plot. Isn't it out of date to aim for hilarious by overexposing Bulgarian (supposedly) flaws in a movie, especially in such a simple way? It is a mere continuation of national characteristics to brag and complain nonstop about our flaws, what "the state" and the "politicians" can't and do not do for us, etc. etc. These 'national characteristics' our outdated, and belong better to the 90s.

Second is the lack of focus. One of the other reviewers rightfully note a 'lack of gender', and 'chaotic'. For me it was a "hotchpotch" of too many different stories attempted in the same movie: - Politic satire of the over-stretching wife of the president and her pawns - Bulgarian habits applied in a foreign country - blackmarket buy/sell/drink/swear in the embassy - A banal reference to other immigrant communities - Russians, Jews. - A romance between 'excellency' and his 'failed student/cleaning lady/stripper/actress wannabe' - such clichés - Absurd scenarios around which the entire plot is spinning - ducks etc. - Unnecessary scenes as the dance show in front of the 'queen' and the fireworks and predictable fire - Other sub-stories intermixing and giving the taste of a "mandzha s grozde" to feeling you get from the movie

Third - execution: One would expect a much better execution in all aspects of a movie with a budget of around 3Mil. The acting was sufficient, but mostly among the British actors. Alan Ford has created such an image in his Guy Ritchie movies, that the role of an 'agency executive' is kind of soft for his strong presence and characters. The Bulgarian actors in general have proved again they are suitable for theater, but not movies - they exaggerate too much in their acting, creating live cartoon characters. That especially goes for the ladies, Papadopolu and Shinova. Slight exceptions are Vergov and Krustev, and the only actor from the old generation, Mr. Peev. Unfortunately, Bulgaria has not produced any good TV and Movie actors for about two decades now.

Besides acting, shooting and cinematography are on an acceptable level, but nothing extraordinary. It is a good start to not have 'annoying' shots or camera movement. Some minor editing goofs, e.g. one of the early scenes had an unsynchronized video/sound.

Fourth is a controversial topic of 'product placement' and financing of Bulgarian cinema. Although I am an ardent supporter of any Bulgarian movies made, and I really want to see the real comeback of Bulgarian cinema with 10 movies/year, I cannot accept such a blunt financing of movies, which requires the entire script adopted to fit character lines such as "what is better than KFC at midnight" or sth. Movie posters are presenting "Zagorka" playing the major part in the movie; the 'duty-free' shop was full of "Peshterska" etc etc. This is a 'silent' rape of viewers, forcing them to watch commercial ad spots, and having them pay for that.

Finally, I did not like the entire message of the movie, underlined for dummies at the end of the movie in the completely obsolete scenes of '1/2 years later' – "this is Bulgarian, hahahaha". Cheap humor, based on old stereotypes, guys… Give us something new and entertaining, at last!

Best comedy I've seen in years!
aneto-326 April 2010
I'm not giving this movie a 10 just because I'm a Bulgarian. I laughed really hard - something that hasn't happened for years watching a Hollywood production. Yes, it wasn't a deep, meaningful movie, but who expects that from a comedy?!? The script was really original, nothing like the comedies I've seen in the last few years. We should admit at least that - we tried to do something different. That's the main reason this movie deserves an excellent rate - it's nothing like the movies we are used to watch. No hollow and unreal love story, no happy ending, no glorifying the nation. It's the exact opposite of that - short fling; interesting and unexpected, yet the only believable ending; exposing the main features (mostly the bad ones) of our nation. Shortly - the real life. And may be the main reason this movie has to be watched is to contribute the Bulgarian cinema - we showed talent and ambition, probably over time we will make something really great!

Weak.... simply weak!!!
martin-stavrev3 January 2011
I may be Bulgarian, but I will not close my eyes for the total lack of creativity displayed with this movie. All of Bulgaria was flooded with ads for this movie. And to be honest, while watching the ads I thought "well, this movie might be worth watching"... well, I was wrong.

First the whole concept of the movie is stupid. The actors... They did their best, but it was not enough to compensate for the poor script. They might of tried to make up some better looking tracking devices instead of using 1,5V batteries. The only funny moment of the movie (the grand fiasco) was totally predictable.

I hate to say it, but Bulgarian movie producers have the talent to make some of the worst movies ever (that is all after 1990, there are some great Bulgarian movies before that). Only Germans are able to compete with the lack of creativity and stupidity of Bulgarian movie makers.

For a long time I thought that no one can make a worse movie than a German, but if we keep up the pace, soon Germany will be second and Bulgaria will be the top producer of worthless movies.

Something different and worth watching
ksavie-749-81495726 May 2010
Mission London never gets boring and entertains 100%. The actors - most of them very well known to the Bulgarian public and completely unknown to the rest of the world, are full of qualities and motivation to do their best. That makes them very persuasive. In fact this movie is so good, if it was a woman I would have married her brother (Bulgarian way of expressing). Of course it will be fair to say that the humor in the film is directed a little bit more towards the Bulgarians, there are some specific touches connected with the Bulgarian culture and style of living that the Bulgarians will grasp more effectively than others. So in my opinion that makes the film more enjoyable for a Bulgarian than anybody else. But nevertheless this one is a fine piece of a movie. If you watch carefully you will eventually know something more about Bulgarians and a lot more about the way they organize foreign adventures.

An awesome film
hammerstrikebg26 December 2010
The film contains the special kind of humor no one outside Bulgaria can understand. It features one of the best actors in Bulgaria and of course Alan Ford - the man who is always participating in great movies. The quality of the video and sound is good. The actors are acting well. There are almost no visible mistakes. The quotes are funny and well done. Part of the Bulgarian culture is displayed by the film including the special kind of Bulgarian humor. Overall this is a brilliant comedy, but if you are not familiar with the Bulgarian humor you will probably just think it's yet another comedy. I recommend this film to all who are familiar with Bulgaria, Bulgarian culture, Bulgarian humor or will ever come to Bulgaria.

A masterpiece appropriate for Bulgarian audience only
leonanavi25 January 2016
I enjoyed the movies when I saw it on cinema six years ago. I enjoyed it even more a month ago when I watched it again.

"Mission London" is a masterpiece but there are a couple of issues: you will not understand it if you are NOT living in Bulgaria and you will NOT like it if you are working for governmental organization in Bulgaria or another county in Eastern Europe. Clearly the movie is not for everyone but if you fulfill the requirements above you will have a lot of fun.

The plot is very good and the actors are well known in Bulgaria. There are a lot of hilarious moments and memorable funny quotes.

Bold attempt at making a commercially successful movie
plamen_gavrilov23 April 2010
This is the first Bulgarian movie that has done everything professionally - the producing, the marketing and advertising, the vision and sound of the film etc. The commercial success of Mission London is of great importance because if there is profit - more companies will be attracted to invest in Bulgarian cinema. Therefore I really hope the movie gets a good revenue and for now it seems like it would succeed in this mission due to the record breaking audience that it attracted during it's first week. Thanks to a very good advertising campaign and extensive media coverage everybody in Bulgaria is talking about Mission London.

So everything involving the organization and the promoting of the movie was executed fantastically. However the movie itself in my opinion fails to live up to the expectations set by the trailers. Some of the acting is poor due to the casting. The screenplay is too chaotic and the directing only amplifies this feeling. In a few words I could describe Mission London as a mediocre attempt at reinterpretating Guy Ritchie's modern British style cinema of the previous decade (Snatch, Lock stock and two smoking barrels) and mixing it with some typical Bulgarian absurdness. Sadly though the result is neither as intense, complicated and funny as Ritchie's nor is it thoroughly exploring the absurd Bulgarian characters and modern politics. It's a movie that tried to imitate and be original at the same time and unfortunately it didn't succeed at both. Another problem is that Guy Ritchie's style has passed it's time and is already too exploited and Mission London doesn't bring anything new to it. On the contrary the director even picked Alan Ford to play a similar character as he did in Snatch.

In the end I would like to say that i'm hoping Bulgarian cinema will attract more sponsors and the producers will try to make movies at a bigger scale. Mission London is the first bold attempt and it's a good start. For those who are really interested in modern Bulgarian cinema I really want to recommend them watching "Zift", "The World Is Big and Salvation Lurks around the Corner" or "Eastern Plays"! New films from young directors that really impress and show that there is a lot of talent here that just needs to be given the chance to work. Because even though the three movies I mentioned were done with very low budgets the results are really fascinating!

The first good BG movie in years
id1043354091 April 2011
But why is it not suitable for non-Bulgarian viewers? Well, First - it's an attempt to get back in the movie business, so we are kind of rusty. Bulgaria lacks cinema industry and our stars are not quite star shaped. They are more like unearthed diamonds. Somebody here mentioned poor play and bad English and he did it in a bad way. No sir - they actually play their role of foreigners in the UK - you are just being an ass! And second - you actually have to be Eastern-European to appreciate the humor. The reason why you don't get it is because it is turned directly to Bulgarian politicians and regular "wannabes" who can't break free from their own simpleness and stupidity. We even have a prototype called "Bai Ganyo". The problem is the humor is not multinational and easily digestible. So if you don't like it - it's probably because you like your own country and your own humor, and you never came in contact with another culture different than yours. I mean this with no offenсe. I just try to be open to new things when watching foreign movies. If you are O.K. with that - go and see it. If you don't want to risk - definitely not for you. Overall it was a nice fresh comedy - not best but nice :) Oh, and there was a guy who came here to complain how he downloaded the movie and he didn't like it - HERE, Seriously??? What an idiot.

It could of been way better...
m-angelova6 June 2010
Sorry, but I have to admit that I didn't like this movie at all. Seriously, I am tired to watch one and the same thing for so many times.

This is a type of movie you either love or hate. For me it's "hate", because it's yet another parody of what the Bulgarian "reality" is. Producers, writers, directors, wake up finally - we don't need another reminder for this, we watch it every day on the street and during most of the TV shows like "Gospodari na efira", "Pulna ludnitsa", "Shouto na Slavi", "Shouto na kanala" and etc. What we need is something new, something different, something that if I have a friend from abroad I can take him to the cinema and be proud to show him the movie and ask him "Now, go to your country and tell your friends to watch it". This is not the one, I'd say.

Several weeks ago a lady holding the movies brochure asked me if I can help her to pick up a movie to watch. Mission London was already available and I told her about it. She said she has already seen it, but with such a disgusted face that I felt embarrassed for even bringing the topic.

Now, time for breaking up into pieces: 1. Story - not that bad, it feels like Brazilian soup opera, but however it brings some good mood. I would rate it with 4 out of 10 stars. 2. Acting - I have rarely seen acting worse than that (and I've seen a lot). May be that's because most of the Bulgarian people here are not really acting - singers and politicians should do what they are good at. Overall, I would rate it with 2 out of 10 stars. 3. Camera - losing the focus off the person who speaks is never a good thing. I would rate it with 1 out of 10 stars. 4. Music - it didn't attract any attention, it was not something exceptional, but it was there, which is new for Bulgarian movie. I would rate it with 4 out of 10 stars. 5. Overall - nothing new, nothing different, the same old parody, which I'm sick of. Way below zero stars.

I am realizing that only Bulgarians would have some interest to this movie, and I'm even questioning myself why I did write this review in English.

However, PEOPLE NOT FROM BULGARIA, DON'T WATCH THIS MOVIE. You Bulgarians, you make the choice on your own. But honestly, I don't think that we as an audience should accept this kind of production, it's way below what we are capable of.

"Mission London," directed by Dimitar Mitovski, is a Bulgarian comedy film that offers a hilarious and satirical take on diplomatic missions and international relations. Set in London, the movie follows the misadventures of the newly appointed Bulgarian ambassador, Ivan Velikov, as he navigates the challenges of representing his country abroad.

The film kicks off with Ivan Velikov, played by Ivan Barnev, arriving in London to take up his post as ambassador. However, instead of being welcomed with open arms, he finds himself embroiled in a series of absurd and comedic situations. From navigating the intricacies of diplomatic protocol to dealing with eccentric colleagues and unexpected crises, Ivan's journey is anything but smooth.

One of the central plotlines involves Ivan's efforts to secure funding for a Bulgarian community center in London, which leads him to seek the support of various influential figures and organizations. Along the way, he encounters a colorful cast of characters, including a shady businessman, a bumbling secret agent, and a group of eccentric expatriates.

As Ivan's mission becomes increasingly complicated, he finds himself caught up in a web of intrigue and hilarity, with each new obstacle presenting a fresh challenge. Whether he's attending high-stakes diplomatic functions, participating in absurd fundraising events, or getting entangled in farcical schemes, Ivan's journey is filled with laughs and unexpected twists.

The strength of "Mission London" lies in its sharp wit and irreverent humor, which skewers the conventions of diplomacy and bureaucracy with gleeful abandon. The film's clever dialogue, slapstick comedy, and wry observations about cultural differences make it a thoroughly entertaining watch from start to finish.

At its core, "Mission London" is more than just a comedy; it's a lighthearted exploration of national identity, cultural exchange, and the absurdities of human behavior. Through its zany characters and comedic situations, the film offers a humorous commentary on the complexities of international relations and the universal struggles of human interaction.

Overall, "Mission London" is a delightful and laugh-out-loud funny film that delivers plenty of entertainment value. With its charming performances, clever writing, and infectious energy, it's sure to delight audiences looking for a dose of comedic escapism. Whether you're a fan of political satire or simply in the mood for a good laugh, this film is guaranteed to leave you smiling.

The Dorchester
The appropriate designed landscapes we went through, where you'll be able to rides from the Mountain Side to the Sunny Beaches. We usually associate with south-east shores with the best beaches in can be found. Travellers can rich and watch fabulous views crossing rivers and miles of peaceful farmland scenes. Convincing association with new action, stars acting performance and captiving entertainment. Perfect screenplay of the movie, which is enough worth imagination. The script is captivating the actors magnificents. There are much of star moments and funny quotes.

Well , the great commercials about this movie made me think that it would be something very interesting and entertaining movies...well I WAS WRONG. May be I didn't catch the line...but it was such a mess. Some story for some people who actually do...nothing , excuse me , but I believe that kind of commercials blurs the view of the spectator. I was expecting for something different ... what about the actors...well again bigger expectations. But may be the mistake is mine , I had bigger expectations, in future I'll try expect the worst looking for the best! I really need something good !It was partly funny, but not good enough.

Extremely poor
VKirilova26 April 2010
I would be so happy if I could turn back time and not lose two hours of my time watching this mockery! I don't even know how to start... The characters are simple even for a comedy. They look more like some bad stand-up comedians depending on the costumes to be believable. The script is awful. Not only they used same jokes most of the time but the jokes weren't even funny. The only thing making this so called movie watchable is the camera work. The trailer is also good. Actually when I saw the trailer I thought it would be a nice funny movie....but.... I can't decide which part of it is the worst... When I walked out of the theater I was wondering who would possibly give money for such a joke and how on Earth did it gain so much popularity and then I remembered all the honest commercials of cigarettes and alcohol drinks in the film. The one thing that bothers me is how some good actors like Julian Vergov or Malin Krystev take part of this hideous nonsense. I won't take the time to comment Lyubo Neikov who isn't an actor, he is just some well known character who makes the teenage audience laugh because he is fat, stupid, cursing, sweaty and disgusting. That's his career. Congratulations! Honestly I felt even a bit depressed after this parade of the stupidity. Seeing Bulgarian pictures such as "The World Is Big.." I thought there was some hope for our cinematography but sadly if we keep on settling with and even celebrating stupid, simple, caddish mockeries like this one and if we dare to call them movies...."good movies" we are going nowhere and the culture of our productions will stay on the lame talk shows and "scandalous" vulgar realities level. I am sorry if I am hurting someone's feelings but that's my opinion :)

IMDb ratings rarely go this wrong
sandeepamar4 December 2010
There should be some sanity in a rating system. I think this movie can deserve a 4 or 5, but running a 9 and now 8.2, is seriously wrong. There is no need to talk about the movie, It does not get anywhere. Please do not get mislead and waste time on thinking this is a great movie...It is a regular flick, with actually nothing at the end.

I saw this movie in IMDb ratings, right next to inception, and was looking forward to see it. Got a decent print and subtitles, and waited till more than half of the movie for some magic to happen, but by the end it was nothing. Nothing happened, or maybe something which I didn't find funny.

Close, but no cigar
valiaka9 October 2011
This movie was recommended to me by a Bulgarian friend who proudly described it as a world class motion picture. It was supposed to be a comedy, but after watching it I was no longer sure what the genre was. It had only a few funny scenes a person who was not brought up in communist Bulgaria would find funny. I seriously doubt the story would reach an audience outside of Bulgaria. Some countries of the former communist block are its best shot. Choosing a location outside Bulgaria to make the movie more appealing did not help in my case. Neither did adding some native English speaking actors to the cast. Acting of the Bulgarian cast was sub-par. I could not make sense of some of their English sentences. If that were intentional, they were not targeting English speaking audience for sure. The story had the potential for a B-movie, but the execution fell short of that. The Bulgarian film industry has a long way to go before it could be accepted by a wider audience.

Gagging for the Brit treatment
grovespaul27 November 2020
This is a funny movie whether you understand Bulgarian humour or not.

But what a fantastic Brit remake it could be.

The actors trying to emulate British actors is a laugh in its self.

All in all.... Not a bad watch
