Absolute rubbish!...a waste of my time. Great cinematography, could have had potential but a pathetic and weak storyline let it down.

VIEWS ON FILM review of Let It Snow
burlesonjesse524 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"I hope you enjoy your stay". Me, well I didn't "enjoy" 2020's Let It Snow. In fact, I denounced it. I rolled my eyes and sighed when its director (Stanislav Kapralov) decided to do a pretentious, "after the credits" ending. Mr. Kapralov, having your protagonist yell at the top of her lungs two or three times isn't psychologically terrifying, it's just freaking annoying.

Anyway, a couple named Mia and Max (played decently by Ivanna Sakhno and Alex Hafner), spend Christmas time venturing to a high elevation, Georgian ski resort. There, they attempt to snowboard at a forbidden ridge where a revenge-minded killer is waiting for them. Said killer dressed in black ski gear and yielding an ax, spends most of the movie messing with the two lovebirds (and goading them) instead of readily getting down to business. The whole endeavor as rinse, repeat hypothermia, feels like a pointless exercise in aloof methodology.

So yeah, "Snow" is not The Shining nor is it The Grey nor is it 1993's Alive. It's just meh. It's another cold weather flick in which the characters survive longer in sub-zero temperatures than any human being has a right to. Oh and yeah, the film spans five days in which almost no water or food is consumed. Me, well I'd be dead and frostbitten in two.

Distributed by Black Sheep Films (that makes sense), harboring derivative flashbacks, and devoid of being in any way scary, Let It Snow is stylish and steely yet ho-hum. Helmer Kapralov is sadly, a veritable, cinematic hot dog man. He commits to every shot although purposeless and the cinematography by Yevgeny Usanov is gleaming enough to accrue at least one viewing. All for naught. It's just too bad "Snow's" fustian storyline and stock outcome fail to horrify you. Misguided "snow" job. Rating: 1 and a half stars.

If daftness of her climbing uphill and up stream in order to save herself on the mountain haven't put you off watching this movie to the end, make sure to let credits run. You don't want miss day five.

Felt cheated
taniabot9 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie started off promising with a young couple wanting to ski a slope they are warned is extremely dangerous and where many have lost their lives. Most of the movie is a survival tale where one roots for the heroine. Unfortunately, the disappointing and rather lazy ending leaves one wondering why this film was made. Don't bother.

Stunning location, but nothing more.

It's all about the location and the main actress Ivanna. Nothing else deserves your money or time.

Bleak, Dark and Mysterious like only eastern Europe produces!
omendata20 May 2021
Like all good horror films should be, this one excels in its dark atmosphere and a pervading sense of dread throughout (not an easy thing to accomplish by any means), so if you like your horror films made in a lugubrious, understated style in the eastern European mould, then this one may be right up your horror alley but do make sure you get a proper set of subtitles as most available will not translate the Georgian language spoken in the movie to English properly!

It does feel a little underdeveloped and could have been so much more but it is a lot better than a lot of the endless USA stalk and slash attempts at horror I have been watching recently and they do pretty well with the budget they had to work with in this film.

Some utterly superb photography, sweeping quadcopter shots over mountains and lakes, luscious scenery, some good snowboarding scenes if that is your thing and competent acting (which is always a bonus in a horror film) and I have to say the director Stanislav does conjure up a rather languorous, ominous and dread filled atmosphere with what he had to work with. It is not filled with gratuitous kills or the usual low brow foul language which is a welcome relief after having had to endure dreck like "Those Who Wish Me Dead" just before I watched this and Let It Snow is a far, far better movie, with 100th the budget and no well known actors in it imho.

The music and sound effects were also perfect and well chosen for the film and added to the mystery which is something a lot of directors try for and most fail at.

This film actually reminds me of "The Dyatlov Pass" movie in a lot of ways but watch out for the blood soaked snowman scene, it was real "horror" in the true sense of the word and chilled me to the bone and was the perfect ending for a true horror film - Unfortunately the usual end credits scene should have been cut and did spoil this superb ending for me; it is as if horror directors seem to think it is part of the menu for creating a horror to give us a mid credits or end credits surprise ending but most times it is not necessary and is superfluous to requirements and can actually spoil the film!

I have lived in eastern Europe so the style and folklore elements are not foreign to me but I guess for a lot of viewers it may be a bit too far out of their comfort zone but give it a go, you might just find it hits that horror nerve deliciously!

If you are looking for that elusive decent horror film this year then you may just find this is the Diamond amongst the coal this year and a solid above average 6 hatchets on the horror scale from me on this rather admirable low budget eastern European horror!

Delicious dish in a wrong wrap
illiakotov28 October 2020
A fake wrap might fool those who put a bad score to the movie. This is not a horror, a screamer, and definitely not a slasher.

Let's say you ordered your favorite dish to be delivered to your house. Just for the story, let it be a burger. You want it badly, you are starving, and finally, the courier is on your door. Knock-knock, here you are men, Bon appetite!

But once opened the package, you see a hot-dog. A freaking hot-dog, not a burger! Would you not eat it? Would you curse all those people who made it and put all possible bad scores on your Ubereats? Yeah, it's your right, but you folks also should know that this hot-dog was pretty good :)

I'm only judging the filmmakers' crew, guys from Ukraine who put all their best efforts to create something worth, with a budget worth peanuts, and mostly on sheer enthusiasm.

And from that perspective, they did well-visual excellence, great location, pretty solid plot, and unpredictable finale.

Although there are rooms for improvement, it's definitely worth seeing, but don't expect "horror" but rather a sophisticated thriller.

Don't judge the book by its cover.

Better than 4 stars.
crazyea2 October 2020
It's not an Oscar winner, but this movie looked great, the physical acting was good. The dialogue and vocal acting was the only real negative.

Even the ending, while not ideal is understandable considering the mental state of the subjects.

At the time of my review this movie is trending at 4 stars. Come on. It's better than that.

Anyway. If anything it indicates that I should give more of these lower rated movies a chance.

Complete and utter S1$t.
ntj-film25 September 2020
This is what happens when eastern europeans try to write english dialog. Add to that, the most insufferable male lead known to man and a female protagonist who wanders aimlessly through the snow for a hour and you've got a spectacular recipe for disaster. There are too many deplorable a$$holes who deem fine indie films unwatchable. This is not one of those times. This is the most boring, nonevent film ever.

Don't waste your time!

I'm not sure what the point of this movie is. It's dull with unrealistic plot. And the ending is just confusing. The acting is just terrible.

Nonsense
gianmarcoronconi23 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
But why did they decide to make such an ugly and senseless film. The plot of the film can be summarized with: two skiers killed my daughter so now I will kill all the skiers. Incipit of a horrendous frightening and plot development without the slightest sense, even the final twist is ridiculous and above all very obvious, so much so that I struggle to define it as a twist. Then it must be said that the real villain of the film is the stupidity of the woman who could have gone directly to the valley from the first second without thus making anything happen, a too easy decision that would not have continued the plot but perhaps would have given a nicer film compared to this that came out of the original film.

Could have been more
YRLY59E24 September 2020
If you've seen enough horror movies you know the plot is going to take one turn in a movie like this with possibly a twist. Except this really doesn't take much of one. Once you figure it out it's a one and done.

After that it's just the lead actress trudging around in snow, yelling, and a few moments where you think they may twist things around or add more to it but never do.

Scenery is beautiful to watch though. There's a point where an incorrectly executed shot sucks you right out of the movie (I'm not gonna tell you where because if you see it you probably won't get back into it).

With the beautiful location there could have been so much more that could have been done with.

georgio-2649016 February 2021
Nice plot and storyline, acting is good, wonderful scenery throughout. Few jumps and scares. The twist was very predictable, is more a thriller than a horror, however it is worth a watch

Off Limits
nogodnomasters8 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Max (Alex Hafner) and Mia (Ivanna Sakhno) are American snowboarding junkies. They travel all the way to Georgia (country and not state for you Faux News watchers) to snowboard on the scenic Black Ridge. We saw a snowboarder get knocked down and killed there by a hit and run skier in the opening scene, 3 years earlier. Since then people have died on the slopes. At 45 minutes into the film we get to know what is going on as our couple found a way in and no way out.

This is a Georgia version of a slasher film without a lot of slashing. Doesn't rally have a good buildup or terror scene.

Guide: F-word. Sex. No nudity.

Nicely done thriller
vasilwriter8 November 2020
If you are a horror movie buff, this movie is definitely not fo you. 'Let it Snow' is a genuine and tensed thriller. If you're watching this to get some jumpscares or to see flying body parts, this ain't your movie.

The cinematography is gorgeous, displaying beautiful mountains of Georgia. Great cinematography is something I have not seen in a low-budget movie for a long time. It's really cool that small Ukrainian crew managed to make a visually stunning movie with almost no budget. The editing and sound design are also amazing.

An unexpected twist at the end of a story works pretty well.

Final Score: 9/10

When in a foreign county, ALWAYS heed the warnings of local legends
Topaz192220 March 2021
You cab always predict the outcome when a bunch of entitled Americans fail to hear the warnings given by foreign locals about their local legends.

It wasn't the scariest. It wasn't the best but it was watchable. How she got through such cold weather without gloves and only 1 layer of clothing was beyond me but that was just a minor overlook in details. The movie is worth a watch though.

Let it go. Let it gooooooo...
Coventry6 January 2024
If there's one thing horror movies taught us since the year 2000, it's that countries in the East of Europe are dangerous, and the people who live there are psychopaths that want to kill unsuspecting American tourists. Okay, admittedly "Let it Snow" isn't a "Hostel" rip-off, but the theory is nevertheless applicable. There are countless of magnificent skiing & snowboarding resorts in France, Italy, Austria, or Switzerland, but for some reason the young couple Mia and Max insist on traveling to Georgia.

They want to freeride down the notorious Black Ridge, but a) it's a forbidden and inhospitable zone full of avalanche-danger, ravines, and the risk of getting lost. And b) there's an entirely dressed in black psycho on a snow scooter stalking and killing reckless snowboarders. His/her motivation is made clear during the intro, as two snowboarders crash into a young girl and leave her to die in the cold. Surely, there is someone in Georgia who swore to avenge the poor kid.

The idea behind "Let it Snow" is mixture between "Friday the 13th" and any random survival horror flick, but - trust me - it's a description that makes the film sound a lot better and more entertaining than it really is. In fact, it's an intolerably slow-paced, boring, and predictable thriller without action or gore. The non-action is constantly interfered by the dullest clichés, like flashbacks to romantic conversations in bed or all the sinister locals behaving suspiciously, and there's endless footage of a physically and mentally suffering Mia trekking through the snow. Yes, the poor girl is going through hell, we get it.

This is one of those movie that when it gets to the end there a great scene and you think to yourself, "Where has this been the entire movie?"
kevin_robbins3 July 2022
Let it Snow (2020) is a Ukrainian horror movie I recently watched on Tubi. The storyline follows a couple who go snowboarding on the side of a mountain they've been warned to avoid. They quickly get separated and discover they aren't the only ones on that side of the mountain. A man looking to hunt them down and potentially torture them are on their heels.

This movie is directed by Stanislav Kapralov (I Am Illusion) and stars Ivanna Sakhno (Pacific Rim: Uprising), Tinatin Dalakishvili (Abigail) and Alex Hafner (Submergence).

This is one of those movie that when it gets to the end there a great scene and you think to yourself, "Where has this been the entire movie?" The ending scene with the snowman is pretty excellent. There's also some great cinematography in here too. Unfortunately I wanted so much more from this picture. There should have been better kill and torture scenes. The circumstances set up perfectly for a really intense and well done movie but the execution and consistency wasn't where it needed to be. This relies too much on the worthwhile and clever climax but the movie overall drags.

Overall this is borderline worth watching with 1-2 worthwhile sequences but a lot more bad than good elements. I would score this a 3-3.5/10 and recommend seeing it one time only if you're a diehard horror enthusiast.

The Georgian mountains are gorgeous, though
femkefrietema13 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It starts out so well: a couple wants to go snowboarding on a dangerous slope, he is experienced, she is a developing talent. They arrive at a 'Shining' hotel with a creepy receptionist, get told not to go there and decide to go anyway.

The stage is set, the horror-enthousiasts settle in their seats, bring it on.

And there it starts to crumble with all kinds of major and minor inconsistencies.

On a dangerous, unknown slope, you stay together, especially when one of you is inexperienced. The guy swishes out of sight when she wants to take pictures.

The girl first gets hit by an avalanche and later tumbles down a long rocky slope without breaking any bones, or even getting so much as a scratch or bruise.

When she tries to get to safety she keeps staggering up the mountain, in stead of trying to get to the valley.

Getting stranded in snow without a hat or gloves slows you down considerably. Getting soaked in ice water brings on hypothermia within minutes. She keeps on going for days without much food or water.

She sleeps on a vast plain, exposed to the elements, while there is a forest and a rock face nearby that would have provided some shelter.

The policeman has POLICE on his uniform, in stead of the word 'police' in Georgian or even Russian.

The killer stabs listlessly with a sharp stick at the snow with the girl underneath, and stops when they hear her scream when she is cut.

Just to name a few.

And the end is simply too asinine for words.

The one star is for the breathtaking mountain views only.

fentond-1076610 January 2021
5 is kind of my kill switch in terms of watch or not Don't be fooled by the 4 star rating This is well past that based on cinematography and production value alone It's not a great movie but it's not a waste of time either Nothing I'd watch again- but I don't regret watching it once If you're in the mood for a run of the mill thriller this will do just fine
