After almost three absurdly long years, “Stranger Things” Season 4 is just around the corner. A tentpole series for Netflix — at a whopping production cost of reportedly 30 million per episode — the fan-favorite sci-fi show that launched its young adult cast, led by Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard, into superstardom will be dropping new episodes May 27.
And, according to the Emmy-winning series’ executive producer Shawn Levy, it’s going to be “harrowing,” “cinematic” and “epic.” He told TheWrap in a recent interview, “This is so much more story and runtime than ever before, not by a little. By a lot.”
The last month of spring will also see the return of reality series titles like “The Circle” — a social media-driven competition series where players catfish, befriend and flirt with each other with the aim of winning a grand cash prize — and “Bling Empire” — which centers on a group of uber-wealthy Asian American friends in Beverly Hills.

Imagine recording a song only to discover that Rihanna wants to sample it. Well, if you're actor Greg Kinnear, that's exactly what happened! While chatting with Kelly Clarkson on her talk show on Friday, March 4, the Little Miss Sunshine star recounted the incredible way that his cover of Billy Stewarts' "Summertime" ended up getting sampled by Rihanna for her 2011 song "Cockiness." "I did a movie with Matt Damon about these conjoined twins back when everyone in Hollywood was making movies about conjoined twins," Greg shared, referencing the 2003 film Stuck On You. Exclusive: Warner Bros. is really upping the stakes to its I Am Legend franchise to a stratospheric level and bringing back for the next chapter, not just original star Will Smith, but he’ll be joined by Black Panther actor Michael B. Jordan in what will rep the duo’s first big movie together as stars and producers. Talk about two big stars getting together, between Smith and Jordan combined, their movies have grossed a massive $12.3 billion at the box office.
Plot details, of course, are being kept under wraps.
Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman, who adapted the Richard Matheson 1954 novel, is also returning to pen the follow-up and producer as well.
All these deals are closed, I understand, and a director is not attached as of yet as the project is still being developed. Francis Lawrence directed the original 2007 movie.
Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo are producing via their Outlier Society banner.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, the director of “Me And Earl and the Dying Girl,” will next direct a filmed adaptation of “The Fortress of Solitude,” the acclaimed, best-selling novel by Jonathan Lethem, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
“The Fortress of Solitude” is set at Amazon Studios and will be adapted by playwright Dave Harris for the screen. Gomez-Rejon will also produce.
The film is based on Lethem’s semi-autobiographical novel from 2003 about two teenagers in 1970s Brooklyn, one white and one Black, who discover a magic ring with the directive to fight against evil. The book grapples with racial politics of the time, gentrification and music culture.
Lethem will also executive produce the film alongside Joshua Malkin. Celeste Holben will associate produce.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon will mount a film adaptation of “The Fortress of Solitude” at Amazon Studios, continuing his creative relationship with the streaming giant.
Behind the festival hit “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” and Benedict Cumberbatch’s “The Current War,” Gomez-Rejon will direct the project based on Jonathan Lethem’s New York Times bestselling novel. Acclaimed playwright Dave Harris is writing the script.
“The Fortress of Solitude” tells the story of two friends, Dylan Ebdus and Mingus Rude, who come of age in 1970s Brooklyn. After receiving a magic ring with the directive to fight evil, Dylan and Mingus forge an indelible bond. But as the years pass, their experiences and opportunities grow increasingly disparate. There are things even a magic ring can’t solve: Dylan is white and Mingus is Black, and in America, that makes a world of difference.

“My Brilliant Friend” star Margherita Mazzucco is set to play Saint Clare of Assisi in Susanna Nicchiarelli’s new feature film “Chiara” which will conclude the director’s trilogy of female biopics also comprising “Nico, 1988” and “Miss Marx.”
Nicchiarelli’s portrait of the 13th century saint born into a wealthy family who at age 18 became a nun after hearing St. Francis preach is being produced by the director’s regular producers, Marta Donzelli and Gregorio Paonessa’s Vivo Film, with Rai Cinema and Belgium’s Tarantula.
Italian actor Andrea Carpenzano (“The Champion”) is also set to star.
“The strength of Chiara’s story lies in her modernity: after all, we are talking about an eighteen year old who, although in a very different context from ours, fights for her dreams,” Nicchiarelli said in a statement. “I am convinced that his story can also speak to the girls and boys of today,...

Moviegoers not far removed from the isolating strains of lockdown may find The Loneliest Whale: The Search for 52 strikes a chord. Distributor Bleecker Street and director Joshua Zeman hope so as the doc, a shift from the helmer’s true crime roots, opens in 75 theaters.
Digital release is set for July 16.
The film is a cinematic quest for the 52 Hertz Whale, which scientists believe has spent its entire life in solitude calling out at a frequency that is different from any other of its species. The whale, discovered in 1989, became a global sensation over the past three decades — including songs about it by British indie rock band Amber Run and K-pop’s BTS.
Zeman, who said he had childhood ambitions to be a marine biologist and loved Jacques Cousteau, was floored by the story and spent ten years trying to make the...

It wouldn’t be a proper summer movie season without an offering from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and after a delay of over a year, and two years since the last MCU film, Black Widow is hitting theaters. With potential to be the summer’s biggest film, it is also a test for the box office in the pandemic recovery era, just as F9: The Fast Saga was when it opened two weeks ago. A big Marvel blockbuster may be the push many need to return to theaters, though how the film performs compared to others in the series will help let us know where we stand.
Scarlett Johansson headlines in Black Widow, the first standalone film for the character who was introduced in Iron Man 2 in 2010. The film also stars Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-t Fagbenle, William Hurt, Ray Winstone, and Rachel Weisz. Directed by Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland,...

This review of “Summertime” was first published at its premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
Like a kinetic ode, Carlos López Estrada’s sophomore feature “Summertime” reverberates with the vitality of 25 young co-authors, each of them a poet whose earnest verses piece together a stirring celebration of the city of Los Angeles, and even more so of its people.
Born of the director’s mind-blowing interaction with a workshop where performers from across the City of Angels recited fearlessly personal texts, the project was structured so that their voices could individually shine as well as coalesce in the context of a larger, unified, and gloriously moving narrative experiment — part urban musical and part sociological art.
As we jump from one gifted rhymester to the next, and from one part of town to another distinct landscape, fiercely empowered Tyris (Tyris Winter), an LGBTQ African American teenager fed up with the accepted...

Since Summertime is the movie season for both horror flicks and rowdy comedies, how about a new addition to the growing genre subsection that’s best known as (duh) the horror-comedy? Of course, it’s changed quite a bit since Hollywood’s Golden Age in which a popular comic actor, or team, would scurry away (usually in “undercranked” fast motion) from a billowing sheet or, often, a crook in a rubber “fright mask”. As monster flicks have become more gruesome and graphic, the “comic takes” have followed suit with the comic heroes frequently covered in gore and viscera by the final fade-out. This week’s new release harkens back to the older days as it involves a “new take’ on one of the classic monsters. But, it’s also based on a fairly recent video game, one that tosses in another element: mystery. In the tradition of Ten Little Indians,...

But the Season 2 finale only rubbed salt into the broken hearts and teary eyes of fans who have been rooting for this cute but angsty couple for two unrequited seasons. And this time, Summer actually listened to the ravings of a jealous and insecure Lola and broke up with Ale because, as Lola pointed out, Summer doesn’t know dude’s pre-racing habits.

ITV Studios has said that 80% of its productions impacted by coronavirus have now resumed shooting or have been delivered, but that international travel restrictions have limited the scope of filming.
Broadcaster ITV said in its August earnings call that 70% of the 230 productions impacted or paused by lockdown had resumed. That figure has now risen, with around 23 more shows back in business or pushed through in the last month. However, in an interview with Variety, Lisa Perrin, managing director of international production for ITV Studios, said “most countries are staying where they are” in filming new shows, as multi-location shoots are rife with challenges due to shifting quarantine orders.
In Europe especially, shoots are increasingly complicated by changing regulations around travel, particularly for the U.K., which has been steadily plucking countries such as France, Spain and Croatia off its safe travel list.

Good Deed Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights from Los Angeles Media Fund to Carlos López Estrada’s sophomore feature “Summertime,” the company announced on Wednesday.
The opening film of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, “Summertime” chronicles the intersecting stories of 25 young spoken word poets over a day in Los Angeles.

On “The Voice” season 18 finale on Tuesday, Todd Tilghman pulled off a win over Thunderstorm Artis, who had been the frontrunner all season long. In our overnight poll, 31% of those weighing in wanted Thunderstorm to win and think that he was robbed of the season 18 title. Todd did not merit a majority of votes from “The Voice” fans and has only 39% of the total tally as of this writing.
Toneisha Harris, who made “The Voice” history as the first Instant Save artist in the final not to be eliminated at the outset, is at 21%. The other two contenders in the Top 5 registered in the single digits: CammWess (5%) and Micah Iverson (4%).
What do you think? Did Todd Tilghman deserve to win “The Voice”? Or do you think Thunderstorm Artis was robbed of the season 18 championship? Even though he lost on May 19, this singer from Hawaii could end up the big winner.

In the lead-up to “The Voice” finale on Monday (May 18), we polled viewers to see who they want to win. Their clear favorite in our Top 5 rankings of the season 18 artists is Thunderstorm Artis, who enjoys a sizeable lead with 37% of the total tally as of this writing. He is being coached by rookie Nick Jonas.
However Artis better watch out for the lone woman in the Top 5, Toneisha Harris, who has polled a full quarter of the vote in our best to worst power rankings. Remember, Harris won the Top 9 Instant Save. That sudden death showdown gave her another chance to impress “The Voice” viewers with her powerhouse vocals on the Minnie Ripperton soul classic “Lovin’ You.”

There exists a period in the career of the great David Lean in which several of his pictures are today more or less forgotten, especially in the U.S. After the one-two double punch of Brief Encounter and Great Expectations in the mid-40s, Lean directed several pictures that were less than stellar in terms of popularity and critical acclaim before he hit a spectacular stride with Hobson’s Choice, Summertime, and The Bridge on the River Kwai in the mid-50s.
Nestled neatly in this middle period is The Sound Barrier (titled Breaking the Sound Barrier in the U.S.), released in 1952. Despite doing very decent box office on both sides of the Atlantic, the film isn’t one that comes to mind when considering Lean’s genius.

Exclusive: The fifth season of Italian crime hit Gomorrah is due to shoot at the end of the summer, we can reveal. But that could be the last we see of the mob epic, according to the show’s producer Cattleya.

Acting is the type of profession that requires resilience. In order to be successful, you have to be willing to hear the word ‘no’ countless times, and keep moving forward anyway. Even when you do hear a ‘yes’, it might not do anything good for your career. Fortunately for Coco Rebecca Edogamhe, her first yes has truly been a game changer. Edogamhe was cast as the title character in a new Italian Netflix series called Summertime. The show hasn’t gone viral yet, but it might just be the next European Netflix show to gain popularity in the United States –

Yesterday, Netflix added 17 films alongside the debut of Mindy Kaling’s new series Never Have I Ever, marking a pretty big release day for the service. Today, the platform is getting a few more drops, though none of them nearly as substantial as a few of the larger offerings earlier in the month.
If you’re in the mood for a love story though, the Italian show Summertime comes in at a lean 8 episodes, making it a good weekend binge. If you’re looking for something a bit more dramatic and engaging, meanwhile, Murder to Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story is a crime documentary about the conviction of a 16-year-old and her subsequent commutation of a life sentence that led to her release years later.
Here’s the full list of what arrived today:
Movies:
A Secret Love
Love Is War

Available from 29 April, this new, Italian Netflix Original series, produced by Cattleya and revolving around a teenager’s summer love, has a slightly vintage flavour. Summer is arriving early on Netflix with the new original Italian series Summertime, which shows us everything we won’t be able to do this year, courtesy of the pandemic: parties with friends, dips in the sea all together, fleeting relationships and loving embraces in the sun. But what we can do is dream, and so from 29 April, subscribers to the global streaming platform will be able to follow the vicissitudes (very loosely based upon Federico Moccia’s book Tre metri sopra il cielo) of a group of adolescents from the Adriatic coast, caught between first loves, family conflicts and an eagerness to grow up and immersed in the hot and vibrant colours of a modern-day summer reminiscent of the 1960s ambiance in Time for Loving.
In early March, one day before cameras were set to roll in Milan on upcoming Netflix Italian original “Zero,” about the lives of black Italian youths, producer Nicola De Angelis and the streaming giant decided to halt production on the show due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Italy was not yet on lockdown, but De Angelis and Netflix Director of International Originals Felipe Tewes agreed that going ahead would have been complicated “and posed a serious health threat to the cast and crew,” whom, De Angelis points out, Netflix is now trying to support economically during the interlude until shooting restarts.
“Zero” actors, several of whom are non-professionals, are meanwhile being coached remotely, as scripts get polished in hopes that shooting can take place sometime this summer.
Italy is the hardest hit country in Europe, with 25,549 deaths to date, and 189,973 confirmed cases. Its death toll is second only to the U.
