It's hard enough to believe that Louisa can tolerate him....
planktonrules25 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Love is in the air in this episode...and both are very unexpected. First, Aunt Joan is unhappy about learning she's got osteoporosis and her sadness is assuaged in the form of a young man who is interested in her and her elderly body. Not surprisingly, Martin is a bit embarrassed when he walks in on them in the act!! Secondly, the other case involves Martin...and he's not the least bit interested. A very nice looking lady who runs the nearby inn is inexplicably smitten with the Doctor and keeps coming to see him for obviously feigned disorders. But because Martin is completely clueless when it comes to relationships, he doesn't seem to understand what is happening. As for Louisa, however, she has noticed!

This is a strange episode--mostly because these pairings are odd. In spite of its oddness, the show is enjoyable--particularly with how Martin is able to put off this amorous woman once and for all!

Give A Woman Eeestrogen And There's No Telling What She Will Do
yasmin-attar6 September 2023
Continuing to watch this show and generally liking it. Maybe the 4 episode binge-a-thon is a little too much of the Doc and the overly dramatic people of Portwenn. Give someone a 10-day supply of meds and they will take all 10 pills at once! Sheesh.

Doc Martin was correct to be concerned about Aunt Joan's osteoporosis, but he should have warned her about the consequences of taking prescribed "Eeestrogen," as he pronounces it. As a medical doctor, he should have been aware of the Women's Health Initiative study of 2000 that showed women on replacement hormone therapy had an increased risk of breast cancer. Although the risk was small, it was consistent across all of the studies and ultimately led to the termination of the study. The outcome in this episode was just further illustration of the townspeople's histrionic reactions to just about everything. It resulted in another "H" that I won't give away.

I like this Season
davjazzer-4306816 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Although Doc Martin is still pretty rude and caustic,I like his character this season and earlier. At least he does show feelings for Louisa and manages a half-smile. As the series went on he got more distant and cranky-how could he with such a cute wife and baby? Still a fine series-Nobody does this type of comedy better than the Brits.

Good for you Auntie Jane
sparrtish25 September 2022
I love when writers think way outside the box! I'm also proud when Actors show themselves in a whole different light. Thumbs up Ms. Stephanie Cole, aka "Auntie Jane" for the brilliant sex scene! I absolutely adore seeing us silver hairs going for it. I like making the younger generation a little uncomfortable. I audibly gasped when Doc Martin bursts in! I couldn't wait to watch it again the next night with my husband.

Again, way to go writing team you have touched brave subjects from homosexuality, impotence and elder sexuality! This is my 2nd time through the series and I am seeing things that I had completely forgotten!

And again kudos to Ms. Stephanie Cole!! I loved your character, and you will be sadly missed my friend. I hope your doing something brilliantly exciting post Doc Martin!

Take Care

Another Silver Hair 😍👍

So funny
Pianoboi8422 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was a great episode. I identify so much with Dr. Ellingham. The stupid dog getting crushed was funny but reading the crybaby comments made it funnier. The whole old broad and the young man story line was funny as well especially the oedipus moment at the end. This was a highlight episode for the series.

Betrayal of Trust
davidhill-9484129 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This most popular show has built up its high following by laying down a solid foundation of trust between producers and viewers. People trust the producers to stick with certain limits. So what went wrong with this episode?

It seemed to me that the usual production team had taken a break and left the show in the hands of some clueless idiot who just didn't get the point of what Doc Martin is all about.

Between the Doc walking around a party with dead dog wrapped in newspaper and his granny aged aunt with her legs open on a kitchen table having sex with a man young enough to be her grandson, the whole sorry episode threw the 'feel good' factor out of the window in favour of some sort of bizarre attempt at 'shock and revulsion' factor.

I hope whoever is in charge never leaves the shop unattended again.

Ugh! Love the series, hated THIS episode
sherryminou0723 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
BEWARE....SPOILER AHEAD!! I absolutely love Doc Martin....minus this one episode. I have nothing against senior citizens having sex, but I don't think seeing a heavy-set, dowdy "Auntie Joan" with her legs spread open, bumping and grinding with a young guy on her kitchen table is exactly entertainment. Apparently, neither did the Doc, who unfortunately witnesses this scene. It could have been done with more taste, but I never really warmed up to the caustic Auntie Joan character anyway. They really over-played the bit about her having Osteoperosis, as though she had Cancer! And taking hormone replacement therapy made her instantly sex crazed (it doesn't). I was glad when they bumped her off later.

Terrible; gross and cruel.
annmason-4484926 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This episode killed the series for me. The entire tone was out of joint with the characters developed earlier. Besides the gross old woman/grandson-aged sex thing (and I'm seventy-one), there was the utter cruelty of Doc accidentally killing the dog and carrying its poor newspaper wrapped body around a party, then verbally accosting its shocked and stricken owner, telling her she had to pay to bury it.

Previousy, the only salvation for Doc's character was the viewer's belief that, despite his rude and obnoxious behavior, deep down,Doc cares about Life. Louisa was cast as a bodavista who shows and teaches him compassion.

Not so. Doc is almost sadistic, and the expected compassion one expects from Louisa is absent; she's just glad to get her man back, the hell with the dog and her rival, the grieving woman who loved it.

This episode reveals the true coldness of the two main characters and thus destroys the premise of the series; it must have been written by someone who never bothered to familiarize himself with the program. I will find some show that bothers to be consistent.

Disgusting
nbrice1824 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The writers must really hate dogs, and it's not funny, it's just mean and cruel.

This was a horrible episode. I usually enjoy the show but it stretches credibility often and this one takes the cake. The part about grandmotherly Joan and the young guy was creepy and it was hard to believe that Mrs Wilson would find Martin attractive. Martin and Louisa have some chemistry and they're somewhat believable but this wasn't.

Martin is not appealing, both in looks and personality, and his attitude towards dogs is abominable.

Just Too Cruel
Hitchcoc31 January 2018
I tend to defend this series because of its idiosyncratic being. We know the Doc is harsh and totally lacking in human kindness. When a beautiful woman who runs a hotel takes a shine to him, he treats her like dirt. Granted, she is annoying but the way things play out, it's hard to be very compassionate toward him. Most of the show involves sexuality but it isn't pleasant to watch. Ultimately, Martin is portrayed as a tyrant.
